The Troggs frontman, who sang hits in the '60s such as 'Wild Thing' and 'Love Is All Around', was diagnosed with lung cancer after being taken ill in December 2011.

His daughter Karen has now confirmed to BBC News that he passed away at his home in Hampshire today (February 4).

Music publicist Keith Altham wrote on Facebook: "My dear old pal Reg Presley of The Troggs died today... surrounded by family and friends at his home in Andover following a succession of recent strokes and a losing battle with cancer.

"He was one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world. Our thoughts are with his wife Brenda and the family and those legion of fans who loved his music and his band. I will miss him hugely."

Presley revealed that he was undergoing chemotherapy in a statement last year, adding: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years."

Announcing his retirement from the band, he concluded: "I shall miss you all."

The Troggs released 12 albums from 1966 to 1992. Their most famous hits 'Love Is All Around', 'With a Girl Like You' and 'Wild Thing' all sold more than 1 million copies.

Sad news. I used to like the Troggs back in the day. Reg Presley had a raw thrusting voice that was so distinctive at a time when groups ruled the charts. They could do the wild ones (like Wild Thing) but also be quite gentle with songs like Love is All Around.

And, of course, Reg became quite a character later on with his championing of alien crop circles even after it was quite clear that they were hoaxes.

He will be sadly missed.

R.I.P., Reg
