View Full Version : Phoebe McQueen (Mandip Gill)
is she becoming a mcqueen? i like her relationship with jacqui has she adopted or fostered her?
she is going to marry vincent
Phoebe McQueen's storyline with Vincent Elegba comes to a head on Hollyoaks this week as the pair's wedding day arrives.
With Vincent (John Omole) still in denial over his sexuality, the couple prepare to tie the knot in Derry, Northern Ireland. The only thing standing in their way is the unexpected arrival of their friends, who beg them not to go through with the ceremony…
Digital Spy recently chatted to Mandip Gill, who plays Phoebe, to hear all the gossip on this week's episodes.
What have you thought of this storyline?
"It's been really good. I've enjoyed it because it's a long-running storyline and we keep coming back to it. It's been nice to work with John and Steven [Roberts, who plays George], and even though we've been involved in other stories as well, we keep revisiting this one.
"My other main storyline was the homeless one when I first came into Hollyoaks, but that didn't last as long. I've enjoyed doing something that's quite topical and I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity."
Has there been much feedback for the story on Twitter?
"I've had a lot of people give their opinion on who Vincent and Phoebe should be with. There's been people saying, 'Just leave it because he's not good for you' and 'Just leave Vincent and George to have a relationship as he's not into you!' There hasn't been so much feedback on Vincent leaving his country and those issues, but that could be happening on other forums that I haven't seen."
Phoebe has seemed quite naïve in this storyline. Has that surprised you?
"Yeah definitely, but I think it's because Phoebe has never been in the situation before where she's in love. Phoebe is usually very smart, but falling in love for the first time has changed her and she's become naïve in certain situations.
"There obviously was the episode where Phoebe saw Vincent and George kissing. Phoebe realised that there was something wrong at that point, but because she wanted the relationship so badly and Vincent told her it was a mistake, she almost turned a blind eye to it.
"I've actually liked the fact that Phoebe has been naïve in this case. I've played her for two years now and she's always been streetwise, known what's going on and not taken any rubbish from anyone. In the last couple of months, you've seen a softer and more sensitive side, which is something different for me to play."
This week, we see Phoebe track down her mother Mel in Northern Ireland to get permission for the wedding. How do things go?
"When Phoebe's mum was in the show before, she was really horrible. It's no surprise that when Mel comes on screen again, she doesn't want to see Phoebe! Mel is shocked to see her because she didn't know that Phoebe was trying to find her.
"She doesn't understand why Phoebe wants to get married, but at the same time, she's not too bothered about the situation either. Mel ends up giving Phoebe permission to get married. It's basically Mel being Mel again!"
Were you glad to explore that mother-daughter dynamic a bit more?
"Absolutely. I really enjoy working with Emma [Rydal] who plays Mel, as I think she's such a great actress. Mel is so different to Phoebe and I can't imagine her ever liking her daughter. They've always had a strained relationship, which is why Phoebe was on the streets as a teenager. I'd love Mel to come to the village so we could do more, but she's only going to be nasty if she does come!"
On the eve of the wedding, Vincent and Phoebe try to sleep together, but it seems he's not attracted to her. Could that be a wake-up call for Phoebe?
"Well, you'd think so wouldn't you? To anyone else it would be a wake-up call! (Laughs.) I think Phoebe doesn't realise that's the case. Vincent doesn't admit that he's not attracted to Phoebe, so she just thinks it's because he's never slept with anyone before. Phoebe has also never been intimate with anyone that she's really liked, so she puts it down to it being an awkward situation for both of them. Phoebe doesn't see that Vincent's not into her.
"There are some emotional scenes where Phoebe is crying over this and doesn't know what to do, but Vincent lets her believe that it's just because of the awkward situation. He says, 'We don't need to do this now - we're not ready'. Once again, Phoebe doesn't realise what's going on and alarm bells aren't ringing for her."
How does Phoebe feel on the morning of the wedding?
"On the morning of the wedding, Phoebe is really happy and excited. She's wearing a beautiful dress that she got from a charity shop and it's everything that she's wanted."
Later, as the ceremony is about to begin, Phoebe and Vincent are interrupted by the arrival of George, Esther and Tilly - who want to stop the wedding! How does she react?
"Phoebe is shocked as she really wasn't expecting it. She didn't know that George knew where she was. Phoebe knows that if George is around, there's a possibility that this wedding won't go ahead.
"Vincent then tells George that he's in love with Phoebe and wants to marry her. He insists that it's the right thing to do, but you'll have to wait and see what happens next."
Did you have any input into Phoebe's choice of dress?
"I had no input into it, but I remember the costume guy coming up to me and saying, 'We've found you a beautiful dress in a charity shop'. I knew it was perfect for Phoebe - she doesn't have any money, so she wouldn't have bought a brand new dress.
"The dress really is beautiful and works so well for the character. I never think about whether I'd wear something myself - it has to be based on whatever fits the character. Because of that, I wouldn't really want to have a say in it, to be honest."
What was it like to film these episodes on location in Derry?
"It was really good. Hollyoaks has such a huge fanbase in Derry. There were a couple of hundred people watching us do the exterior scenes, but they were so well-behaved. They wouldn't speak until 'cut' had been called and they always moved when they were told to by the crew. We were actually filming some quite emotional stuff in those exterior scenes, but the fans were brilliant.
"The age range of people watching Hollyoaks in Derry is also huge. There were older people watching us who genuinely knew the story. One time we were doing a scene and I could see an older woman explaining to someone else what was going on and the background to the storyline! They were all really good to us."
As you mentioned, this is another topical story for the show. What do you hope viewers take from it?
"I think the message behind the story is that you can be whatever you want to be. Where you're from doesn't determine what sexuality you are, who you are or what your personality is like.
"This situation would be really hard for somebody who was in Vincent's shoes in real life. He's run away from his country, and it's very hard for him to stand up and be open about his sexuality. But I think if you want to do it, it is possible and there are people who can help you."

Hollyoaks teen Phoebe McQueen was left devastated in last night's Channel 4 episode (November 14) as she was jilted by Vincent Elegba on their wedding day in Derry.
Earlier this week, we chatted to Mandip Gill - who plays Phoebe - for her thoughts on the wedding itself.
Now that the big day has ended in tears, we can present some Soap Scoop bonus snippets from Mandip revealing her hopes for Phoebe's future…
Recent episodes have shown that Robbie Roscoe has feelings for Phoebe. Could that be explored more?
"I think there was a time when it was going to be explored more and I think the storyliners may want to hold onto it. But whether it will go anywhere, I don't know!"
Would you like it to develop further?
"I would, as I like working with Charlie Wernham who plays Robbie. I also like the Phoebe/Robbie dynamic because they're very, very similar. I think they could do a lot of stuff together - a lot of darker stuff and get up to a lot of mischief. It'd be nice to see if they could make it work!"
As she has a connection to the characters, will Phoebe be involved in the bullying storyline with John Paul, Robbie and Finn?
"Obviously there will be consequences when Phoebe does find out about that, and it depends on where the Phoebe and Robbie storyline goes. I imagine that I'll have some connection to the story because I do have a relationship with John Paul. But I don't know yet if I will go into that storyline or just pass comment on it."
With Jorgie Porter leaving Hollyoaks as Theresa, are you sad to see another McQueen go?
"I am - not just from a professional point of view, but also because Jorgie is such a great person to have on set and be around. I genuinely think that she'll be missed by a lot of people and there'll be a hole when she leaves. She's such a nice girl to work around and she brings so much to her character.
"When we do McQueen scenes, they're all very individual characters and I think there will be a space left behind as 'the silly one'! Jorgie also gives suggestions for scenes on set and even though it's for silly stuff, it works so well for her character. I don't think anyone could replace that, so when she leaves, the dynamics will change a lot. I'd like to see her come back after she's had some time away."
Are you hoping to stay on Hollyoaks for a while longer yourself? Do you think there's a lot more to explore with Phoebe?
"I'm hoping to stay around until next year. I think there's loads more to explore with Phoebe. Maybe we could move away from the love stories and see her do more of the gritty stuff that I did when I first started at Hollyoaks, like the grooming and homeless stories.
"In the past, Phoebe has mugged people, she's had fights, she's stolen things and I think that's where she works best - with grittier storylines. Hopefully that's the direction we can go in."

Hollyoaks teenager Phoebe McQueen sees another side to Finn O'Connor next week when he turns nasty by threatening her.
Finn (Keith Rice) shows his true colours to Phoebe when she realises that he is responsible for Patrick Blake's drink being spiked during an important event at The Hutch.
While Phoebe is startled by Finn's threats, she does find herself growing closer to the villain's former friend Robbie Roscoe (Charlie Wernham), leading to a surprise kiss between the pair.
Digital Spy recently caught up with Mandip Gill, who plays Phoebe, to hear about the eventful week for her feisty character.
It's been a bit quiet for Phoebe recently, so did you enjoy being back with a big week?
"Absolutely. It's been a while and the last time we saw Phoebe properly was for the storyline with George and Vincent, so I've had some time off since then. It's now been great to get my teeth stuck into something - it's nice to have another storyline.
"It's also nice to work with different people, as Charlie and Keith are both great. They've had their own massive storyline going on and that's a subplot to what's going on here, so that's great as well."
When Phoebe goes to the cinema with Finn at the start of this story, does she just see him as a friend?
"Absolutely - it doesn't even cross her mind that it could be anything more. Robbie gets jealous when he sees them heading off to the cinema together, but that isn't the reason Phoebe does it. She isn't trying to make Robbie jealous - it's just that she thinks she has a nice friendship forming with Finn."
Does Phoebe realise that Robbie is jealous?
"It does become obvious to her that Robbie is jealous, because he does show it! But Phoebe really isn't trying to encourage that. She doesn't have those feelings for Finn anyway, as they're just friends.
"The last time we saw Phoebe and Robbie together was when she punched him, so she doesn't know what's going on with him. As far as she's concerned, she's just going to the cinema with a friend."
Later in the week, Finn tries to cause more trouble by spiking Robbie's drink - but Patrick takes the drink and starts behaving very strangely by twerking in front of everyone… What was it like to film those scenes?
"Jeremy [Sheffield, who plays Patrick] was so good! We had a full day in The Hutch for these scenes and Jeremy's performance was great, because he just kept doing it take after take. He'd obviously prepared for it really well.
"Me and Charlie were in stitches because he was so good. Fortunately by the time it came to do our shots, we'd become immune to the twerking so we could do the scenes without laughing!"
Why does Phoebe become suspicious that Finn was to blame?
"It's an inkling she has. Phoebe doesn't see Finn spike the drink, but throughout the week, her instinct is kicking in and she's starting to see that Finn isn't who he says he is. She can see that there's a different side to him, so she puts two and two together and realises that he was to blame.
"Phoebe then tries to find some evidence to prove that it was Finn, but he realises that she's on his case and threatens her."
How nasty does Finn become?
"I've always said that Phoebe has been through a lot - she's been in situations with people who aren't very nice at all, especially being groomed in the Deena and Graham situation and also working with Trevor. She hasn't been that intimidated by a lot of people since joining the village, but in this case, she is taken aback by how scary Finn is.
"Phoebe has never seen this side to Finn and even though she doesn't know what he's done to John Paul, she isn't sure what he's capable of. After this scene, Phoebe realises that she can't say anything to anyone about Finn being the culprit..."
How does she feel when Robbie starts to get the blame?
"It's a big battle that Phoebe is having with herself. She's made a lovely friendship and possible relationship with Robbie by this point, as they do grow closer over the course of the week.
"Phoebe does really like Robbie by the end of the week, so naturally she wants to stick up for him because he is being blamed by the teachers and could even be kicked out of school. But she's too scared by Finn threatening her."
Robbie isn't pleased by Phoebe refusing to stick up for him…
"He isn't, but Phoebe tries to make things right by going to the garage to help him out with some work. She helps him to change a car battery and he's actually impressed! That's when they share a little kiss."
Are you supporting this new romance for Phoebe?
"I think Phoebe and Robbie make a really good match. Personality-wise, Robbie is just what she needed. Even though he's done a lot of bad things in his storyline, I think Robbie is actually a nice guy with a nice heart. It's also nice for Phoebe to find someone after Vincent.
"I think it's also good that Robbie isn't too nice and he's not going to let Phoebe walk all over him. They've got a cool and fun relationship - it's not lovey-dovey and it's right for Phoebe."
Could Phoebe turn Robbie into a better person?
"I think they both could help each other. They've both got issues which the other could help out with. I do think Phoebe could help Robbie to become a better person, but I think he's starting to get there himself anyway. He's realising himself that the way he treated John Paul was wrong."
There's a whole other element to the Robbie and Finn storyline which Phoebe doesn't know about yet. Will she become involved in the John Paul story?
"There hasn't been that much said about it yet, but there is talk that she will be. It will obviously affect Phoebe in the long-run for as long as she's with Robbie.
"It'd be nice to be involved because Phoebe and John Paul have a great relationship. She looks up to him, so I think there would be a lot of impact on Phoebe if she did get involved. It's a great storyline and it's been played well, so I'd love to play a part in it."
Do Phoebe and George have more scenes coming up?
"They do have some stuff coming up with Blessing, so I'm looking forward to that! We haven't worked together for a while, but these scenes coming up are very different to the story we had with Phoebe, Vincent and George - it's going to be quite fun stuff."
Are you still hoping to stick with the show?
"Definitely! I'm very happy and I'm not going anywhere."
Hollyoaks has revealed that Phoebe McQueen is the mystery character who is causing trouble for Theresa.

The mystery was resolved on screen in Friday's E4 first look episode (October 24) as Phoebe was shown meeting up with Sonny Valentine, who is hiding out and planning his next move following his recent disappearance.
Hollyoaks fans had been left to guess over who could be targeting Theresa after a number of strange events at the McQueen house made her look like a bad mother to her daughters Kathleen-Angel and Myra-Pocahontas.
Theresa has blamed scheming Sienna Blake and her cousin Carmel McQueen in recent days, as both had been around each time something had gone wrong.
However, in the closing moments of the show's latest E4 episode, viewers saw that Phoebe (Mandip Gill) has been following Sonny's instructions to cause trouble between Theresa and Carmel.
Sonny and Phoebe's secret meetings look set to stay under wraps for a while yet, as next week's episodes see Carmel cast out by the McQueens when she continues to be blamed for the recent problems.

Jorgie Porter, who plays Theresa, told Digital Spy this week: "Myra gets absolutely stressed out and she doesn't know what to do, but in the end she decides to kick Carmel out. You wouldn't think that Myra would do that because Carmel is her daughter, although I think Theresa having young kids is part of the reason that Myra keeps her in.
"Carmel hasn't got any evidence to defend herself with, as everything points to her being the troublemaker. She hasn't got a leg to stand on!"
well her helping sonny was a shocker wonder why
she tells robbie she is pregnant
looks like she dies, shame as i like the character

The McQueen family are left in turmoil on Hollyoaks next week as Phoebe's health deteriorates further.
Phoebe (Mandip Gill) has been in a critical condition after being shot by Joe Roscoe, and her loved ones will be left with a big decision to make when they are told that she could undergo potentially life-threatening brain surgery.
The news pave the way for the return of Robbie Roscoe (Charlie Wernham), who has been serving time in prison for viciously beating up Dirk Savage earlier this year.
John Paul and Mercedes are the first to learn of Phoebe's worsening condition when they visit her in hospital, only to be informed by Lindsey Butterfield that her health is deteriorating.
Although Lindsey instructs John Paul not to tell Robbie about Phoebe, he goes against her advice and calls the prison, believing that Robbie could be the one to get through to unconscious Phoebe.
While Mercedes and Lindsey row over Phoebe, John Paul breaks the bad news to Robbie and urges him to record a message for Phoebe, thinking it will help her regain consciousness.
Later, Dr S'avage tells the McQueens that Phoebe can have brain surgery, but he adds that it is a risky procedure. However, Mercedes is furious with Lindsey when she attempts to stop the family agreeing to the operation.
While the McQueens decide that Phoebe should have the surgery, Robbie is released from prison and heads straight over to see her.
Arriving at the hospital, Robbie locks the door to Phoebe and won't let the medical staff in to operate on her, as he is scared that she will die in theatre. Will anyone be able to get through to him before it's too late?
