I'm not sure if this is for Television Discussion or Music Discussion, but I'll put it here....

Did anyone see the BBC 4 programme last night on the Top 10 Richest Songs of all Time?

Here's a quick run down of the songs that have grossed the biggest money:
10. The Christmas Song ("Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...etc.")
9. Every Breath You Take
8. Pretty Woman
7. Santa Claus is Coming to Town
6. Stand By Me
5. Unchained Melody
4. Yesterday
3. You've Lost that Loving Feeling
2. White Christmas
1. Happy Birthday

I was surprised by some of them. "Every Breath You Take" was one. I was also surprised that "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" was so high and certainly surprised that it is above "Unchained Melody". The biggest surprise of all, for me anyway, is that "Happy Birthday" is a copyrighted song and earns money for the family of the writers and the publishing company every time it is played!

Any views anyone?

There are many rich songs and it is quite tuff job to select the all time richest song. But I would agree with you on "Happy Birthday" it's very common song that played often on television. Also the Christmas Song.

When you say "select" what do you mean? The top 10 was compiled after extensive research into record sales, royalties, repeat fees, use in films and on tele. It's not a matter of opinion but one of fact.

besides Happy Birthday.. which is always great when it is been sung to me, the rest are so depressing... is there no cheery rich songs like "ding dong the witch is dead"
