Home and Away stars Axle Whitehead and Luke Mitchell are understood to have left the soap.

The actors, who played Liam Murphy and Romeo Smith respectively, have already filmed their final scenes for the Summer Bay drama, TV Week reports.

Departure storylines for the pair are expected to air in 2013, while both cast members have been tipped to look for career opportunities in the US in the coming months.

Whitehead has been appearing in the role of Liam since early 2009, while Mitchell made his debut as Romeo a few months later.

News of Mitchell's exit comes just a few months after his real-life fiancée Rebecca Breeds was seen bowing out as Ruby Buckton.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 in the UK, and weekdays at 7pm on Network Seven in Australia.

Luke Mitchell has been cast in The CW's Tomorrow People.

The Home and Away actor will play John Young, a member of the Tomorrow People who specialises in teleportation, according to multiple sources.

Mitchell has played Romeo Smith on Home and Away since 2009, and previously appeared in Neighbours. He won the TV Week Logie Award for 'Most Popular New Male Talent' in 2010.

The Tomorrow People is a remake of the 1970s British sci-fi series of the same name, and has been picked up to pilot stage.

Mitchell joins Peyton List (Mad Men, 90210), who was cast in a lead role earlier this week.

Nikita executive Danny Cannon will direct the pilot from a script by Chuck's Phil Klemmer.

The pilot's executive producers are Arrow's Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec of The Vampire Diaries.

Axle Whitehead has explained his decision to leave the soap, insisting that it was the right time for his character Liam Murphy to bow out.

The actor finished filming with the Summer Bay show late last year and his final scenes aired on Australian screens last week.

Liam's exit storyline, which hits UK screens later this month, sees him say goodbye to the Bay to reconnect with his son Ash.

Whitehead told TV Week: "Liam had done all he needed to do in the Bay. He had no intention of staying until he fell in love with all these women.

"It felt the right time for him to go and find his son. He'd exhausted every opportunity to get his life back on track while in the Bay."

In real life, Whitehead is currently living in the US to work on his music career and search for new acting roles.

He added: "I'd been very keen to move over here for a while and be able to start afresh.

"I learnt so much during the three and a half years at Home and Away. Now I'm starting again in a fresh market, and I just have to see what sticks."
