View Full Version : Vanessa Woodfield
Emmerdale bosses have announced that four new characters will be joining the village this autumn.
Bernice Blackstock's lover, a new father-daughter duo and an old acquaintance of Rhona Goskirk have all been cast as fresh faces for the ITV1 soap.
First to arrive will be Rhona Goskirk's wild friend from college Vanessa Woodfield, who has been tipped to shake up life at the vets' surgery.
Played by The Royal actress Michelle Hardwick, Vanessa is billed as a "self-assured party girl" who will be "like a breath of fresh air" when she arrives at the vets' practice.

Michelle Hardwick as Vanessa Woodfield.
While Vanessa is always up for a laugh, she is also plain-speaking and instantly clashes with Rhona's husband Paddy.
Hardwick commented: "As a local girl and a fan of the show, Emmerdale is my dream job. After only two days, I am starting to feel at home already and Vanessa is such a fun character. I can't wait to see what's in store for her."
Emmerdale star Zoe Henry has tipped new character Vanessa Woodfield to cause "fireworks" in the village.
Last month, show bosses announced that actress Michelle Hardwick had been cast as Vanessa, who is an old friend of Henry's alter ego Rhona Kirk.

Vanessa is a fun-loving character who will be taking up a position at the vets' practice next month, leading to clashes with Rhona's husband Paddy (Dominic Brunt).
Henry told Inside Soap: "Rhona was young, free and single the last time she and Vanessa were hanging out at university. We've just started filming the scenes where Vanessa returns to her life.
"They're great, because Rhona starts becoming more of a 'lad about town', as it were - while poor old Paddy is left at home literally holding the baby.
"I think there'll definitely be quite a few fireworks when Vanessa arrives!"
In the meantime, Rhona has another drama ahead next week when her new work colleague Brett Harrison, played by Gideon Turner, misreads her signals and makes a move on her.
Henry confessed that she was nervous about filming the upcoming scenes.
She laughed: "I get in such a state about things like that! I'm just terrified that I'm going to look like a complete idiot in some way. It's genuinely quite an unpleasant experience, as you've got a roomful of men standing about watching what's going on. There's nothing remotely romantic about it.
"Thankfully, Gideon was delightful. It was entirely my pleasure by the end - it could definitely have been a lot worse!"
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV1, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.

Emmerdale airs new character Vanessa Woodfield's first scenes next week as she takes on a job at the vets' practice.
Billed as a "self-assured party girl" who is always up for a laugh, Vanessa gets a warm reception from her old friend Rhona Kirk (Zoe Henry) upon her arrival in the village. However, it's clear that Rhona's husband Paddy (Dominic Brunt) isn't so impressed, which could lead to tension...
Here, Michelle Hardwick - who plays Vanessa - reveals all the gossip on what fans can expect from her character.
We've heard a lot about Vanessa's fun-loving personality. Just how wild is she?
"On a scale of one to ten, Vanessa's wildness is probably eleven! I think it's been that way since her college days, as she's not really calmed down very much since then."
What is Vanessa's background with Rhona?
"Vanessa and Rhona were at college together. They trained together and they were inseparable. They used to get up to all sorts and were known for being quite a wild pair!"
How does Paddy react to Vanessa's arrival?
"Well, Paddy has never met Vanessa before, but he's heard a lot of stories about her from Rhona. Although those were probably the edited versions of the stories! When Vanessa does finally arrive, Paddy feels quite threatened by her friendship with Rhona. As they haven't seen each other for so long, Vanessa just wants to pick up their friendship where they left off.
"Vanessa thinks that Rhona isn't living life as she remembered her, because she's settled down so much. Now Vanessa wants to carry on the relationship they had when they were in their early 20s, so Rhona goes along with all these nights out and Paddy does feel a little bit left out."
What does Vanessa make of Paddy?
"She thinks he's boring! As soon as she sees him, she can't believe that Rhona has settled down with somebody so stable and serious. Vanessa does know in her heart of hearts that he's the right one for Rhona, though, because he's such a lovely guy. But she's adamant that Rhona needs bringing back to life."
Does she succeed in bringing out a different side to Rhona?
"She's certainly hoping she can! Vanessa wants to bring back the old Rhona, who nobody else has seen yet. Watch this space - she'll try to work her magic."
As Paddy is feeling left out, will this situation cause problems between him and Rhona?
"Initially yes, because Rhona is out with Vanessa nearly every night, and she's leaving Paddy at home with Leo. Vanessa isn't trying to split Rhona and Paddy up, but she thinks that it's her turn to spend some time with Rhona now - she wants her mate back. Vanessa is just quite selfish when it comes to friends. She's demanding and she's used to getting what she wants."
Does Vanessa make her presence felt on her first night out in the village?
"She does! She ruffles a few feathers with Marlon, and she eyes up Andy Sugden at the bar. Vanessa is definitely looking to see where the talent is."
What type of guy does Vanessa usually go for?
"I think Vanessa would definitely go for muscles and looks. It's certainly brawn over brain at the moment for Vanessa, without a doubt. She likes the bad guys!"
How popular do you think Vanessa will be in the village?
"I think it's going to be a real mix. A lot of people are going to think she's fun and want to hang around with her, but then some of the older residents feel differently. She does rub Edna up the wrong way straight away at the vets, which is never a good thing!
"I think there's going to be certain people who love Vanessa, but also people who think she's trouble."
Would you be friends with her?
"Absolutely, I love her! I think she's got so much bottle. She lives life to the full. Playing someone like that is great, as you can just let yourself go. I'm far more sensible in real life."
How well have you settled into the show?
"I'm loving it. It's been a few weeks now and everyone has just been so welcoming, both cast and crew. I actually knew a lot of the crew members already from my old job at The Royal. I'm loving it and the village is so beautiful. Plus, I'm a local girl so it's just around the corner for me."
Along with the crew, were you familiar with many of the cast?
"I knew Natalie Anderson, who plays Alicia, because of The Royal. We go way back from when we trained together, though, and we're really good friends. It's fantastic to be working with Natalie again.
"There's also Andy Wear, who plays Jude - I've known him since I was 19. We've toured together and we did The Royal together. I've also previously worked with the new cast member Tom Mannion, who's playing Steve. He started on exactly the same day as me, and I had no idea until I saw his name up on the board. He played my boyfriend in The Royal for four episodes."
What was your first day on set like?
"My first day was in The Woolpack. I had three scenes and I'll never forget it. It was with Zoe, Dom Brunt and Mark Charnock, so it was a pleasure. I was very nervous, but I think you've got to have that adrenaline."
Were you a fan of Emmerdale before joining?
"Yes, I love it and all of my family love it. Because it's a local soap to us, I've watched it as far back as I can remember, ever since the age of 11 or 12."
Who will Vanessa be sharing a lot of scenes with?
"Well, obviously she's friends with Rhona, but at one point she actually says, 'I'm going to have to make new friends because Paddy is going to want Rhona back at some point!'
"Vanessa gets very friendly with Moira, which is lovely because they're about the same age and they're both on the lookout for men. There's a few glasses of wine to be had with Moira, and when Alicia comes back there's a few glasses with her as well. In fact, Vanessa has a drink with anybody who'll talk to her!"
You mentioned that some people think Vanessa will be trouble. Will she be?
"Yes, but not trouble in a really bad way. It's trouble in a fun, good way because she's got a heart of gold. Vanessa wouldn't ever set out to hurt anybody, but she does like to get her own way. She's not a bad girl, though, not intentionally. I think she might be misunderstood!"
Are you planning to watch your first episode when it goes out next week?
"I know for a fact that my family will all be round at my mum and dad's with a few bottles of champagne. But I'll be watching it through my fingers!"

Vanessa Woodfield's job hangs in the balance on Emmerdale next week after she misdiagnoses Katie Macey's horse Wilson.
Turning up to Home Farm on an urgent call-out after attending her godmother's funeral, Vanessa tells Katie (Sammy Winward) that Wilson just has colic and there's nothing to worry about.
Later, however, all hell breaks loose as Wilson dies suddenly. With Katie on the warpath, Vanessa is left in the firing line - and a huge rift develops between Rhona and Paddy Kirk as they debate how to handle the situation…
Here, Michelle Hardwick - who plays Vanessa - lifts the lid on a tough week ahead for her character.
Is Vanessa enjoying working in the village?
"Oh, she absolutely loves working in Emmerdale. She loves village life, as I don't think it's something she's been used to before. Vanessa also really enjoys working with her best friend Rhona, so life can't get any better, really."
Is Vanessa sympathetic when she can see that Paddy is feeling pushed out?
"Well, Vanessa and Rhona are very tight after their time at college together. Vanessa has come back wanting to pick things up exactly where they left off, so Paddy is bound to feel pushed out.
"Vanessa does realise how Paddy is feeling, so she does take the foot off the accelerator slightly. She is slightly sympathetic, and she wouldn't want to do anything to come between Rhona and Paddy."
Trouble brews in the next few days when Rhona hurts her back. How does that come about?
"It's absolutely Vanessa's fault, as it happens during a piggy back race at her birthday party. Rhona falls down, and Vanessa falls off her!
"Rhona has now injured herself, so she's limited with what she can do at work. Paddy has been struck off, so Vanessa is left holding the fort pretty much herself. She's brought that on herself, but it's going to cause problems."
Then Vanessa's godmother passes away. Is this a significant loss for her?
"It is, as Vanessa was very close to her godmother, so she tells Paddy that she needs time off for the funeral. It's not just any old funeral, as they were particularly close. It's a sad time for her, but she does get the time off to go."
Vanessa heads to the pub after the funeral, but she's soon called out to examine Katie's horse Wilson. What happens?
"The funeral is all over and Vanessa is at the pub when she gets a phone call from Paddy, saying that they need her to go up to Home Farm.
"Vanessa doesn't think twice - she's straight up there in funeral gear. She's had one glass of wine in the pub so she can drive straight there with no messing."
After examining him, Vanessa says that Wilson just has colic. Does she have any doubts about the diagnosis she gives?
"None whatsoever! She saw the horse, did all the relevant checks and said everything would be fine."
How does Vanessa react when she finds out that the horse has died later that day?
"It's an absolutely unbelievable shock, because there were no signs there at all that would have suggested this might happen. There was nothing more Vanessa could have done.
"There's nothing for Vanessa to feel guilty about, as Rhona says that she would have done exactly the same thing. Katie and Declan think Vanessa was distracted due to her godmother, but whether she'd been at a funeral or not, there's nothing that could have been done differently."
Is Vanessa worried when Katie threatens to take legal action over this?
"Yes, because at the end of the day, it's Rhona and Paddy's practice. She doesn't want any trouble for them that's down to her. Paddy already thinks that Vanessa is a botherer and she's a nuisance, without this happening too!"
Has anything like this happened to Vanessa before?
"No, I think this is absolutely the first time, and she's been a vet for many, many years."
In the end, Katie promises to call off the legal threat if Paddy and Rhona sack Vanessa. Will Vanessa go along with this?
"If it came to it and it was going to stop them from losing their business, then Vanessa would hand her resignation in without a shadow of a doubt!"
This issue causes a big problem as Rhona doesn't want to sack Vanessa, but Paddy wants her gone. Is Vanessa aware that they're arguing bitterly over her?
"Very much so, and as I've said, the last thing she wants is to cause even more problems between them. Vanessa turning up in the first place was causing arguments, and now this is even worse because obviously Rhona's standing by her best friend and Paddy's saying, 'No, get rid of her!'"
What happens next?
"Vanessa hands in her resignation, but there's more to follow after that! It's a really bad position for them all, because obviously Paddy cannot work because he's suspended, and Rhona is in so much pain with her back that she cannot stand up straight.
"Vanessa is the only one who can work properly at the moment, due to her hurting Rhona's back. She's feeling really bad about everything, so we'll have to wait and see what happens."
Romance-wise, has anyone caught Vanessa's eye in the village?
"Well, she's teased Rodney a couple of times. She's probably thinking, 'What can I get from this man?' And also poor Dan! She went to his Bronte night with him, and he thought he was in with a bit of a chance, but she was never going to go there in a million years.
"I think Vanessa likes to play the guys along a little bit, but she's not really had time for romance. Nobody has turned her head at all, so watch this space!"

She is quite annoying so far with Rhona
Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has revealed that she would like to explore her character's past.
The actress, whose character Vanessa Woodfield joined the cast last year, admitted that she would be intrigued to find out more about her alter ego's history.
Speaking to Inside Soap, Hardwick stated that she would like some of Vanessa's family members to be written into the show.
"There's so much scope because [Vanessa] never mentions anyone! They would need to be quite loud though, just like Vanessa," she said.
"I can't wait to find out what they have in store for her."
Hardwick also said that she loves playing her Emmerdale character, but is nothing like her in real life.
She commented: "I'm nowhere near as direct as Vanessa. She's not afraid to say exactly what is on her mind, while I go round the houses. But that is why I love playing her - she is so much fun!"

What is the deal with her, is she after Paddy or Rhona?
Emmerdale vet Vanessa Woodfield remains in an impossible predicament over the next fortnight as she continues to cover up Rhona Goskirk's painkiller addiction.
Vanessa is currently staying loyal to her best friend in the hope that she can help Rhona (Zoe Henry) overcome her problem without anyone else finding out.
Slowly but surely, Vanessa starts to realise that things for Rhona are getting worse rather than better. Out of her depth, will Vanessa expose the truth about Rhona?
Here, Michelle Hardwick - who plays Vanessa - chats about her character's big dilemma and where things go from here.
How is Vanessa feeling about Rhona's painkiller addiction?
"At first, Vanessa didn't realise how severe this problem is. Obviously this all started when Rhona hurt her back while mucking about with Vanessa quite a few months ago now, so Vanessa does blame herself for that. Since then, Vanessa has seen just how serious this is and she's now trying to cover for Rhona.
"I don't think Vanessa would have agreed to cover for Rhona if she had known just how big the problem was, though. Vanessa would have made Rhona seek professional help right from the start. Vanessa is so out of her depth at the moment."
Next week, Rhona is preparing to go on a weekend away. Does she ask Vanessa for more pills to tide her over?
"Yes, she does. Rhona is going away with Paddy, Marlon and Laurel. She knows that she can only have a certain amount of pills that Vanessa will be prescribing for her, so she's asking Vanessa for more. However, Vanessa refuses because she thinks that Rhona has got enough pills to see her through the whole weekend.
"Vanessa also encourages Rhona to reconsider her decision to go away for the mini-holiday. She reminds Rhona that she could run out of pills and get desperate while she's miles away from anyone. It's not like Vanessa can come and help her in that situation."
We'll also see a worrying incident when Rhona is operating on Val's dog. What happens?
"Vanessa gets a message from Rhona which says that she needs help urgently. When Vanessa arrives into the surgery, she sees that Rhona is about to do an operation on Cheryl while sweating and shaking. She's in no fit state whatsoever to be doing this operation.
"Vanessa takes over and tells Val and Eric that Rhona has got flu. However, this is a big shock for Vanessa, because it's clear that Rhona could have killed this dog. Rhona's addiction is now having a big impact on the vet practice."
Does Vanessa think Paddy should be made aware of this problem?
"Yes, Vanessa really wants Paddy to know now, because she's out of her depth while dealing with Rhona on her own. She has no idea what to do next and she's having to tell so many lies while covering for Rhona. Vanessa keeps urging Rhona to come clean as she's sure that Paddy will understand, but deep down, she knows that Rhona won't.
"Vanessa's main worry is that Rhona's addiction is growing by the day, and so are the lengths that she's going to in order to get her hands on drugs."
Why doesn't Vanessa just tell Paddy?
"At this point, Vanessa is just scared and she doesn't want to lose Rhona as a friend. She also isn't sure that it's her place to say anything. If she was going to tell Paddy, she should have done it at the start rather than waiting until now. If Vanessa told him now, she'd not only lose Rhona as a friend, but Paddy would probably blame her for the whole thing. He blames her for everything else!
"Rhona could also possibly blame Vanessa for pushing the drugs on her, because she is that desperate. Rhona is an addict and addicts will talk their way out of any situation, no matter who they're hurting."
Rhona ends up stealing some medication from Sandy, doesn't she?
"Yes, but Vanessa doesn't find out about this until Rhona has gone away for the weekend. Vanessa is having a quiet drink with Sandy at The Woolpack when Ashley walks in and tells his dad, 'Your medication has turned up - it's a good job that it was someone like Rhona who found them'.
"The penny drops for Vanessa that Rhona has tried to steal drugs from Sandy to keep her going over the weekend. Vanessa is worried and also angry at Rhona's lies. It's shocking that Rhona has stolen medication from an old man, but Vanessa still won't tell Paddy the truth. It's gone too far down the line."
Rhona behaves strangely during the mini-holiday, and ends up telling Paddy that she has an alcohol problem. How does Vanessa react when she finds out?
"Vanessa can't believe it. Rhona has steered Paddy down the wrong path and is quite happy to do that. Vanessa is baffled and says, 'Hang on, so it's alright for him to think you're an alkie but not a druggie?' Paddy's next move is to ban alcohol from the house, which isn't good news for Vanessa because she does like a drink herself.
"Rhona's behaviour is strange, but it's because she's scared and also that she doesn't believe her problem is all that big. I don't think addicts do realise the extent of their own problem until much, much further on."
How does Vanessa want things to progress from here?
"Vanessa really needs Rhona to attend a support group now and seek professional help. Vanessa thought that she was helping to contain the problem by prescribing Rhona with tablets, with the aim of weaning her off gradually. But now Rhona is getting stashes of pills from wherever she can, so this problem is beyond Vanessa's control. Rhona really needs to go and see a counsellor."
Have you done any research into painkiller addiction?
"Yes, a guy came in who had been addicted to painkillers. It was an eye-opener, because I've had no experience or knowledge of this before. I also did my own research on the internet and it's amazing what you find out."
Could this addiction ruin Vanessa and Rhona's friendship?
"I really hope it doesn't, but depending on how it turns out, yes it could. Vanessa feels as though she's being the best friend she can by helping Rhona. But as each day goes by, Vanessa is slowly realising that she should have put a stop to this from day one."
Do you think we'll end up seeing Vanessa and Paddy on the same side for once?
"I think it'd be nice if that happened, because they both want the same thing at the end of the day. They'd both want Rhona to be healthy and back to her old self, so they have her best interests at heart. It'd be good to see them on the same side!"

It's been a hell of a year for actress Michelle Hardwick, finally landing her dream role in Emmerdale after two decades of auditions.
The proud Yorkshire lass signed up to play vet Vanessa Woodfield in her favourite soap six months ago, and since then she has become a huge hit with the fans.
This week saw her acting her socks off in a drugs storyline – when Vanessa discovered just how far pal and painkiller addict Rhona Goskirk was prepared to go.
And as if that was not enough, in real life Michelle is also head over heels in love with girlfriend, Rosie Nicholl.
As she explains, after years of never talking publicly about her sexuality, she now wants the world to know about their “blissful” relationship.
Smiling nervously, Michelle, who spent nine years playing receptionist Lizzie Hopkirk in ITV drama, The Royal, says: “Life is good – and my life with Rosie is a big part of that, it really is bliss.
"I’ve not spoken about it sooner because it never seemed like the right time.
“When I was in The Royal the majority of our audience were older and I would have been nervous of revealing too much.
“But since joining Emmerdale I’ve been getting asked about my personal life and when people want to know ‘do you have a boyfriend?’ it’s tricky.
“I don’t want to hide anything. I’ve never actually been able to talk about ‘my girlfriend’ or ‘partner’ – this person that means everything to me, and it feels good to be able to finally do it.”
Laughing, she adds: “I do tweet, so people can see me and Rosie on there but they probably think we’re mates who share a house.
"People say, ‘I’d never have guessed you were gay’ because they expect you to look a certain way and I don’t fit their stereotype.”
The couple met 18 months ago, when Michelle was doing panto and Rosie, 28, a music teacher, was performing in the band.
Both had other partners so they spent a year as friends before getting together.

Michelle Hardwick and girlfriend Rosie Nicholl
Michelle, 36, says: “We just hit it off. Now we live together, I’ve never been happier.
SHE had never really watched a soap before she met me, but now Rosie watches Emmerdale all the time and she will even help me with my lines.
“Neither of us are into clubbing, I did all that in my younger days, so if we do go out we like to be at home and in bed for midnight – we’re a right pair of Cinderellas.
“Further down the line I’m sure a civil partnership would be something we’d consider. I don’t know about children – I’m knocking on a bit, but never say never.”
While she has only just come out to her fans, Michelle spoke to her family about her sexuality in her 20s.
She reveals: “I was late coming out to my family – I was 29. I spoke to my dad and I was scared how he’d react but he was phenomenal.
“He said ‘I love you, you are amazing and I’m proud of you’, then, like a typical Yorkshireman, he said, ‘leave it with me, I’ll tell the rest of the family’.
“My grandma, Lilian is 89 and she’s fine too, she’s my best friend. The only thing my family were upset about is I hadn’t felt I could come out sooner. I just didn’t want to hurt them.
“I had told friends because there are times when we all need someone to talk to. I was 18 and at college when I met a woman and thought ‘this feels right’ but I had boyfriends at school, like everyone else.
“I did have Kylie and Jason posters on my wall and maybe I was looking at Kylie a bit too, but I honestly thought I was going to marry Jason Donovan growing up.
“As a teenager, it was hard as I had to keep things secret and it shouldn’t be that way. Hopefully things are different now.
“It’s important to be open, I’m very happy with my life.”
Michelle’s Emmerdale role is a dream come true. An avid viewer – she was in the fan club from 11 – she tried out for several roles over the years.
She studied Performing Arts at Park Lane College in Leeds before attending Scala Performing Arts in the city.
She says: “The first time I auditioned I was still at college, I was 18. It seemed like every few years I’d be up for something but it never quite happened so when the producer offered me the role of Vanessa I couldn’t believe it.
"Even though I’ve done lots of other stuff, including being two people in Corrie, I was terrified on my first day. I was doing my first scene in The Woolpack!
“I love the character, Vanessa is fun. We’re different though, I’m more of a city girl.”
And Michelle is delighted Vanessa is a hit with viewers. She says: “I get loads of fan mail.
"I’ve just had one guy saying he wants to take Vanessa out for a seafood dinner.
“But I’m not a sex symbol, that’s ridiculous. In The Royal I never got recognised, whereas now people do know it’s me.
"I love it – I feel very proud. I have just done my first proper red carpet, at the British Soap Awards. I absolutely loved getting dressed up.
“It was amazing, having someone to do your hair and make-up.”
This week viewers will be seeing more of Vanessa as best pal Rhona’s addiction to painkillers ramps up a gear – and the pair fall out.
Michelle, who lives in Leeds, says: “Rhona keeps asking about this parcel so Vanessa gets suspicious and intercepts it.
“When she does it’s full of tablets bought online. All Rhona’s talk of getting off the drugs has been lies so they have a massive row.
"That’s what addicts do, they lie and they don’t care who they hurt. I heard that first-hand when I spoke to a guy who had been through this kind of *addiction.
“He had a bad back and was prescribed some strong painkillers but he got hooked within three weeks.
"By the end he was taking about 80 a day. He was very lucky not to have killed himself. But he lost everything, his partner, his job. It’s very sad.
“Rhona is the same – she’ll do anything to get what she wants and she isn’t thinking about the consequences.
“Vanessa is at the end of her tether and things get a lot more complicated between her and Rhona as things get worse.
“Because it’s painkillers she thinks she can handle it herself and help Rhona. She wouldn’t be like that if it was heroin, but as this story shows, painkillers can be just as serious.
“Addicts get in this safe bubble but when the *withdrawal starts, that’s when they need more.
"It can be hard to watch but it is a fantastic story. I’m so proud to be part of it. It’s one of the reasons I wake up smiling every day.”

Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has predicted that there will be a "backlash" against her character Vanessa Woodfield if she causes trouble between Rhona Goskirk and Paddy Kirk.
A new storyline on the ITV soap sees Vanessa start to become confused about her feelings for Rhona (Zoe Henry), realising that they could be going beyond friendship.
Rhona initially remains oblivious to how Vanessa is feeling as she is too distracted by her painkiller addiction to notice.
Hardwick told Inside Soap: "Their relationship has become so intense while Vanessa's been harbouring Rhona's secret, and she's 100% committed to helping her.
"Vanessa's feelings are developing at quite a pace, but they're new to her. She's not a lesbian and she doesn't think she's a lesbian. She's fighting her feelings and really doesn't want to admit them."
She continued: "I really don't know if there's any possibility of an actual relationship between Rhona and Vanessa. At the moment, I don't think Vanessa can see past the fact that Rhona is ill. I'm not sure whether she can envisage them being a couple - all she wants right now is for Rhona to get her life back on track.
"If Vanessa did come between Paddy and Rhona, though, I know there'd be a backlash! Paddy is one of the most popular characters in soapland, so I'd get a terrible time of it from the viewers, particularly since Vanessa is a relatively new character. I'm getting my armour ready just in case!"
Hardwick recently spoke about her own sexuality for the first time, confirming that she is in a happy relationship with girlfriend Rosie Nicholl.
Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has revealed that her character Vanessa Woodfield's judgement is being clouded by her feelings for best friend Rhona Gosirk.
Viewers of the ITV soap will have noticed Vanessa start to become confused about her feelings for Rhona (Zoe Henry), realising that they could be going beyond friendship.
Despite trying to support Rhona through her drug addiction, the pair come to blows next week after Rhona fails to collect Leo from nursery as she was meeting her new pills dealer.
Hardwick told Inside Soap: "Rhona claims she got held up in traffic, and when Vanessa claims to believe her, it's clear her feelings for Rhona are clouding her judgement.
"Even Marlon and Paddy aren't sure if she is telling the truth and if Vanessa wasn't falling in love with Rhona, she would be a lot more ruthless.
"There have been times before when Vanessa has felt that she should just tell Paddy everything, but now she is too terrified of losing Rhona, so she wants to believe her. It's all very confusing for Vanessa."
When Paddy realises his wife is shivering, he assumes she is unwell and so offers to fetch her something from the chemist. Unsurprisingly, Rhona agrees but tells him not to mention it to Vanessa or Pearl. However, Vanessa then spots Paddy in the cafe armed with tablets.

Vanessa rails into Rhona for her behaviour.
Hardwick said: "That gets Vanessa's heckles up, particularly when Paddy admits that Rhona asked him not to say anything.
"Vanessa offers to drop them off on his behalf so she can confront Rhona about it, and once she gets over there, they end up having a massive heart to heart. A lot of emotional stuff comes out in the wash.
"Vanessa's very angry but also very confused. This whole situation is becoming a much bigger deal than she ever thought it would and with everything spiraling out of control, there really is no going back for her."
Emmerdale actress Michelle Hardwick is currently taking centre stage in one of soapland's most compelling stories, as her character Vanessa Woodfield has fallen for best friend Rhona Goskirk.
With Rhona (Zoe Henry) still at rock bottom due to her painkiller addiction, Vanessa's feelings have become confused after spending so much time worrying about her.
In real life, Michelle is up for the 'Best Newcomer' prize at this year's Inside Soap Awards, which take place in October.
Digital Spy recently caught up with Michelle to hear her reaction to the nomination and what's ahead for Vanessa.
How do you feel about being in the running for an Inside Soap Award?
"I couldn't believe it when I found out! It's lovely and such an honour to be up, especially being in there with Laura Norton, who does a fantastic job of playing Kerry in Emmerdale. There's a lot of other tough competition out there, too. I've only been on screen for about eight months, so it's absolutely lovely to get some recognition."
How do you rate your chances?
"I haven't thought about it at all yet! Obviously it's just the longlist that's been revealed at the moment and then the shortlist will be revealed further on down the line, so I haven't thought that far ahead at all. But it is nice to rally round friends, family and people on Twitter if they do want to vote for me. My grandma said that she'd go out and buy a magazine for the voting form, as she hasn't got a computer!"
You must be pleased to see Zoe Henry up for the 'Best Actress' award too…
"I'm more than pleased! I think I've been voting for her more than anyone else. The painkiller addiction plot is also up for 'Best Storyline'. It would be absolutely fantastic and so deserved for Zoe to win this, without a shadow of a doubt. I'm so proud of the work that she's been doing and it'd be brilliant if she won."
It's been a big few weeks for Emmerdale and it really seems to be standing out among the other soaps at the moment. Do you think it's in with a good chance at the awards?
"Absolutely. Since the live episode, Emmerdale has just gone from strength to strength. In the past few years, the show has really been growing and you can see that with the viewing figures. A lot of programmes dip during the summer months because a lot of people are away on holiday, but we've had some big episodes with Gennie and the car crash. There's also so much hype with Cameron at the moment. I think people are addicted to the show and it's fantastic to be part of it."
Your character was a real mystery for a long time!
"I know, it was a bit of a mystery to me for quite a while, too! Obviously you come into the show as a new character and you have some basic knowledge of the background and what may happen in the next few months. Now a lot more is being revealed about Vanessa.
"One thing I keep saying to people is that Vanessa isn't gay. She's just fallen in love with her best friend because she's trying to help her, and her feelings have become very confused. Vanessa is now infatuated with Rhona and she just needs to be near her. Apart from work, Vanessa has had no other focus in the past few months."
How are the fans reacting now that Vanessa's feelings have been revealed?
"I've been pleasantly surprised by the reaction. I must admit that I was waiting for a bit of a backlash against Vanessa, as Paddy is such a well-loved character. But a lot of people out there actually seem quite up for Vanessa and Rhona getting together! I don't really know about that, but I'm pleased that they've not been too horrible with me!
"Also, now that Vanessa's feelings are becoming clearer, the viewers seem to be understanding her more and the journey that she's going on. They can see why she's reached this stage."
Are you glad that she isn't being portrayed as a villain?
"I am, because it's not like she's just entered the village and set out to destroy Rhona and Paddy's marriage. We have to remember that it was only a few months ago that Vanessa was actually helping Paddy and Rhona when they were having problems. It's not Vanessa who's destroyed the marriage, as Rhona has done that herself with the painkillers."
Have you had much feedback over the addiction storyline?
"There's been a lot of feedback, yes. Zoe has probably received more than me, but we all did our research for it, both individually and as a group. I've had people come up to me in the street saying they can really identify with the storyline.
"It's such an eye-opener to hear about people's experiences with painkiller addictions, because it's something that I really didn't have any idea about before this. It's unbelievable how many people's lives that it affects. Because of that, it's been really important to do it justice and not rush the storyline."
It's been suggested that Rhona will stoop to new lows to get her fix in the near future. Will the viewers be shocked by what's coming up?
"I think they will, yes! As we've seen, addicts will stoop to any levels and will do anything to get their next fix, so there's a lot of manipulation that starts to come from Rhona now. Poor Vanessa will be on the end of that, so there's quite a bit more of that to come."
When Paddy finds out the truth about the addiction, do you think he would blame Vanessa or would they unite for Rhona's sake?
"It will definitely go one way or the other! I think possibly because of their history, Paddy may blame Vanessa for everything, but we'll have to wait and see. For a while, some people actually thought that Rhona's addiction would throw together Vanessa and Paddy for one night! Obviously that's not the way it's gone, so a lot of people have been surprised, although some did see it coming!"
Are you hoping for a long-term future with Emmerdale?
"I'm mid-contract at the moment so I'll be there until March at least. There's quite a bit of time to go yet, and after that, we never know what's round the corner!"
You've also recently spoken about your own relationship with girlfriend Rosie for the first time. What kind of reaction have you had?
"It's been very positive and I've had wonderful comments. A lot of people have even said that I've been an inspiration to them, so it's amazing to be helping other people. It all happened at the right time for me and I'm so glad that I did it. I've not had one negative comment at all, which is lovely!"

Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has revealed that there is a new romance storyline ahead for her character Vanessa Woodfield.
Vanessa is currently single, but will be hoping for a chance of happiness when the story begins in the coming weeks.
Hardwick told Digital Spy: "It's going to get a little bit more busier for Vanessa on screen in the summer, so watch this space! Hopefully there's going to be a nice love interest for her."
Asked whether the character in question will be an existing regular or a newbie, she replied: "I can't say just yet, you'll have to wait and see!"
Last year, viewers saw Vanessa fall for her best friend Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) as she supported her through a painkiller addiction.
Despite some confusion over her sexuality, Vanessa has since decided that she wants to find a man.

Rhona and Vanessa in Emmerdale
Hardwick added: "When Vanessa initially came in, I thought she was going to be straight anyway - but then they threw the curveball in of Vanessa falling in love with Rhona.
"That was great and it was interesting to play, but I think they have gone down the route now that she's going to be straight. But hey, who knows? Watch this space."

Andy Sudgen (Kelvin Fletcher) will also face a challenging time when he suffers a potentially life-threatening injury. Andy's injury will have a massive impact on his romance with Bernice Blackstock, but she may not be the person he leans on and he could find support elsewhere
Emmerdale vet Vanessa Woodfield is left shaken next week as she realises that she has a lump on her breast.
Vanessa's teenage boyfriend Kirin Kotecha (Adam Fielding) makes the discovery as they enjoy a cosy moment on the sofa, which prompts her to get checked out by a doctor.
Here, Michelle Hardwick - who plays Vanessa - explains why her character's romance with Kirin hits the rocks as the health scare plays out.
Next week we see Vanessa trying to cover up her birthday! How old is she?
"People have said to me before, 'How old is Vanessa?' but we've never actually put an age on her until now. I'm 39 in real life and I've always thought she was probably just a little bit younger - maybe 34 or 35. Then I got these scripts through and it was Vanessa's 39th birthday, so she's exactly the same age as me! It's just made the age gap between her and Kirin even bigger in my head!"
Is Vanessa feeling sensitive about her age?
"Well, she ignores the fact that it's her birthday. She gets texts through from Leyla, Rhona and Paddy, but every time her phone buzzes, she tries to hide it. Later, Vanessa is all ready to go out with Rhona when Kirin arrives and says, 'Happy birthday'. He's found out as he's got all of the birthday cards that have come through the post!
"Vanessa admits that she doesn't want to be another year older and expand their age gap even more, but Kirin insists that it doesn't matter - the age gap is nothing because what they have is real."
When does Kirin find the lump in Vanessa's breast?
"It's the day after her birthday. Rhona takes Vanessa out on her birthday evening and the next day she goes into work and finds out that Kirin has booked the day off for her. He takes her out for brunch, they get back and Vanessa suggests she is ready for her afters! (Laughs.)
"They just have a nice little smooch on the couch, but then Kirin finds the lump and freezes. Vanessa worries that her age has suddenly hit him, but he feels it again and says, 'Do you ever check yourself out? I think I felt something'."
How does Vanessa react?
"Vanessa checks herself upstairs, feels the lump herself and then she goes down and tells Kirin that it's a cyst, he shouldn't worry and she's had hundreds of those before. She makes an excuse to leave and goes straight to find Rhona, saying 'I need you to come and see this'. Rhona says, 'No way, you've got to go to the doctors'.
"Vanessa does go to the doctors and he says that he needs to refer her for further tests. Afterwards, Rhona tells Vanessa that she's got to tell Kirin. Vanessa doesn't know how he'll react, because he is 17 at the end of the day. Beforehand she's always insisted that Kirin is so mature and doesn't act like a 17-year-old, but ultimately something like this is so huge. She wonders if he'll be able to handle it if it is something serious. She also worries that he'll feel trapped - she doesn't want him to stay with her out of any moral duty. But Rhona says Vanessa has got to let him know."
How does Vanessa break the news to Kirin?
"She tells him that she's never had a cyst and the doctor is now sending her for further tests. Kirin can't believe that she kept the truth from him. Then we're ultimately going to see how Kirin does handle it, because he does let her down. We're focusing on the fact that it is a 17-year-old in love with a woman who could have a really serious condition here.
"Kirin promises that he'll stick by Vanessa whatever happens, but he then goes out with his friends when she goes for a sleep. We don't see him again that night. Vanessa comes downstairs and she realises she's all alone. She also finds out from Rakesh that Kirin has texted to say, 'Don't wait up, I'll be out all night' - but she's not had a text herself. Vanessa feels really lonely at that point. On the night when she really needed Kirin the most, he's not there."
What happens next?
"Vanessa finds Kirin the next day and he apologises for being busy the night before. She's not angry with him, she's more sorrowful really. She's trying to deal with it herself and she just says to him that she's got an appointment that afternoon and she'd wondered if he'd come along. He says he'll be there, but she waits at the vets for him to pick her up and she is let down again. We'll have to wait and see whether that's it for Vanessa and Kirin."

Kirin will fail to support Vanessa
How is Vanessa coping with the health scare?
"She's massively freaking out about it. I will put my hands up - before I read these scripts, I didn't check myself as often as I knew I should. I know why I didn't - it's because I was scared to find something. I think a lot of women would put their hands up and say the same. It sounds ridiculous, but when I was in my early 20s, I was in the shower and I did feel something and I freaked out. I ran downstairs to my mum and dad, told them and then I made an appointment with the doctor. It turned out it wasn't anything, but when you feel something, it is total panic and I did have that to draw on.
"Because of that, I think that's why I didn't check myself. But since doing this storyline, doing the research online and seeing how important it is, I do it now - and I hope the story encourages others to do that."
How far do things go with the scare?
"Vanessa has a biopsy and then she is waiting for the results. She's terrified and Rhona says that she should take time off work, but Vanessa wants to keep busy. It's at a time when Paddy, Rhona and Vanessa could potentially expand their business with an equine rehab centre and Katie's stables. So there's all that business side of things going on as well. From the time that Vanessa has the biopsy, it's about five days that she waits for the results."
Is Kirin off the scene during that period?
"Yes he is. He tries to apologise and Vanessa is not massively angry with him, she feels sorry for him. What's interesting is that after Vanessa tells Kirin that he was right about the lump, it's the first time that she's ever told him that she loves him. Then the next time you see her, he's left her and she's on her own. It's a big deal because it's the first time she's said those words to him."

Vanessa will reveal her love for Kirin
What kind of a response have you seen to Vanessa's unlikely romance?
"Well, the reaction makes a change from people saying to me 'painkillers in aisle five' when I was doing the Rhona addiction storyline! I thought I was going to be called a dirty old woman, but people have just said, 'You're doing alright for yourself there!' It's all been really positive - I've not had one negative comment.
"The only other response is that there are certain people on Twitter that were so upset that Vanessa is not a lesbian after the Rhona story. I don't respond to everyone but what I say is that when Vanessa came into the village, she wasn't a lesbian. She was a free spirit who was quite man mad, eyeing up Andy Sugden at the bar. Vanessa fell in love with her best friend who she was helping through a difficult time, and it became more of an obsession. Some people would prefer her to be with a woman, but hey ho - let's mix it up a bit, that's what I say!"
Have you been pleased with the Vanessa and Kirin romance?
"It's great because when I first read it, I thought it probably wouldn't last. It's lasted much longer than I thought it was going to, so I'm really pleased with that. I get on really well with Adam - he's like a little puppy on set. I'll come into work and see I've got seven scenes with him and I know I'll be exhausted by the end of the day because he just doesn't stop!
"I adore working with him - he's so professional and so on it. I'd love the Vanessa and Kirin relationship to last, but truthfully I don't know what's going to happen beyond what we're doing now."
Are you pleased to have a big storyline again?
"Definitely. When I first came into the show, I got involved with the Rhona addiction storyline so it was busy straight away. Then it was a little bit quieter, which was lovely because what Vanessa was doing last year was finding her feet in the village and making new friendships. Now she's really close to Leyla and that works a treat - I love working with Roxy Shahidi.
"Now doing this, I'm so busy again at work which is great. But I get married in a few weeks in real life, so I've got everything else going on too!"
Are you missing having Sammy Winward (Katie) on set?
"Yeah, especially because in the latter part of last year, my character moved into Katie's house and I had quite a few scenes with her. She's such a good laugh. We keep in touch with Sammy and we'll still see her, but it's like we've lost a little part of Emmerdale - Sammy with her gorgeous long blonde hair and the smile which was always on her face. But she'll go onto amazing things."

Vanessa Woodfield finds herself in another tricky situation next week as she realises that she could be pregnant with Adam Barton's baby.
When Vanessa takes a pregnancy test that comes out positive, she panics as she has no idea whether the father is Adam or her boyfriend Kirin Kotecha.
Here, Michelle Hardwick - who plays Vanessa - reveals the details of her character's dilemma.
How does Vanessa realise that she could be pregnant?
"She realises because she hasn't been feeling too well. Unbeknownst to her, it is the start of morning sickness. It's only when Rhona comes into the vets and starts talking about having a cat neutered that all of a sudden it all clicks into place for Vanessa. She realises that she could be pregnant, so she does the tests."
When Vanessa discovers that she is indeed pregnant, does she consider a termination?
"Yes, Vanessa does consider a termination because she has never, ever wanted children. Whenever she has seen people with kids, she has always said it's not for her. It's just something that wasn't in her life plan. Vanessa does definitely think she can't keep the baby, especially as it's not as straightforward as some pregnancies could be!"
How has Vanessa left things with Adam?
"It was definitely only a one-night stand between them. It was just two people that were quite lonely one evening and got together. Yes it was a huge mistake and they both instantly regretted it the morning afterwards, but they both agreed to keep it to themselves and hoped nobody would ever find out."
How is Vanessa feeling about Kirin at this point?
"Obviously Vanessa is back with Kirin now and she does love him. They're in a good place at the moment. Vanessa still hasn't told Kirin what happened between her and Adam, so she feels terribly guilty about that.
"Vanessa and Adam were both on a break from their different relationships when they slept together, so technically they weren't actually cheating on anybody. They could have come clean straight away, but of course they don't do that! Now it's more the guilt that Vanessa hasn't told Kirin and it's gone too far."
Rhona is the first person Vanessa confides in. How does Rhona react?
"Rhona instantly questions who the father is - she is so quick! She asks if the baby is Kirin's and one look from Vanessa reveals that she doesn't know."
How would Vanessa feel if Adam was the dad?
"She'd be devastated because it only happened the once between them. I know that's all it takes, but it would just be the icing on the cake in a terrible situation."
Would Vanessa embrace the pregnancy if the baby was definitely Kirin's?
"I think so! He did run away initially from the whole cancer scare and that's what made them split up in the first place, but Vanessa would think that he'd now be man enough to deal with this one way or another."
What decision does Vanessa make over the pregnancy?
"Vanessa thinks the only way out of the situation is a termination, so that her and Adam can keep that awful secret to themselves. If Vanessa has the termination, it's gone and nobody would ever find out, whereas obviously having the baby could open up a can of worms.
"When Vanessa is out in the village and she's about to attend a consultation to sort it out, she then sees Marlon in the playground with Leo playing happily. It hits her that she's 39 years old and it could be the final chance for her to be a mum. She changes her mind and decides that she wants to get to know this baby."
Why does Vanessa tell Adam about the baby first?
"She was going to speak to Kirin and tell him everything, not only just about the baby but also the one-night stand with Adam. Vanessa wanted to come clean because it was the only way she could get around it, but she absolutely bottles it.
"There are a few times where Vanessa is close to telling Kirin but they get interrupted. She's absolutely scared to death of telling him, even though she knows she has to do it. Instead she goes round to Adam and tells him that she's pregnant."
How does Adam react?
"He's absolutely stunned but then Vanessa tells him, 'We both know it's not yours'. She's actually telling him to stay out of her life, so her and Kirin can bring up the baby regardless."
Does Vanessa trust Adam to keep quiet?
"He's got a very big mouth, but up to now he's not said anything about them sleeping together, so I think she trusts him in that respect. Despite that, the next day she sees Adam out and she's constantly looking over her shoulder. She's wary over whether he's told anyone, in particular Victoria."
How does Kirin react when Vanessa finally shares the baby news with him?
"He's absolutely over the moon. It's the initial shock at first, because he's young and he wasn't expecting it. Kirin promises that he'll man up and he won't react in the same way he did to the cancer scare. He talks abut how much he's looking forward to being a dad, but then he's excited to tell his own dad, which Vanessa doesn't want him to do."
Rakesh does get suspicious, though!
"Yeah, because Kirin is dropping hints all over the house that Vanessa is pregnant! Rakesh starts asking, 'Wow, is there something you should tell me?' Vanessa quickly nips it in the bud and says of course not. She and Kirin both know damn well that it's the last thing Rakesh would want for his son."
What should Vanessa do?
"If it was me, I don't think I'd be able to cope with the guilt. I would have to come clean and then deal with it one step at a time. I'd rather have that than live life looking over my shoulder!"
Emmerdale's Michelle Hardwick has spoken about her character's pregnancy.
Hardwick, who plays Vanessa on the ITV soap, said that she'd like to see on-screen boyfriend Kirin Kotecha revealed as the father. :nono::nono:
Next week on the soap, Vanessa takes a pregnancy test that comes out positive. She panics as she has no idea whether the father is Adam Barton or Kotecha.
Speaking to Digital Spy at the British LGBT Awards, Hardwick said: "I would prefer for [the child] to be Kirin's as they are in love, and there's interesting mileage in that.
"The audience didn't think their romance would last as long as it has, and it's been an interesting twist has as they really do love each other."
Discussing the pregnancy storyline, the actress added: "Poor Vanessa. Things were going so well for her and then she had that little one night stand with Adam Barton.
"In her defence, she was separated from Kirin at the time and Adam thought he was separated from Victoria, so technically they were single for that one night.
"She is now pregnant and it's going to be up in the air who the daddy is. She has no idea - it could be either one of them."
Asked whether she's nervous about Vanessa's fate following rumours of a big summer stunt ahead for Emmerdale, she replied: "No, it's just exciting really.
"You're a jobbing actor so you run with what you're given. There's an amazing buzz about it at work at the moment."
Emmerdale star Hardwick married her partner Rosie Nicholl earlier this month.

Emmerdale vet Vanessa Woodfield makes a bold move in tonight's episode (April 29) - issuing a huge ultimatum to Adam Barton.
Pregnant Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) is left with some difficult decisions to make after she realises that she wants to keep her baby after all.
Still unsure over who the father is, Vanessa heads to Butler's Farm and shares her baby news with Adam (Adam Thomas), leaving him shellshocked.
Vanessa warns Adam that her boyfriend Kirin Kotecha is the dad and if he wants to make a fuss by claiming otherwise, he needs to do it now. Realising that Vanessa is putting him on the spot, will Adam jeopardise his future with Victoria by getting involved?

After what happened to Adam with John and James being his father, he should tell Victoria the truth and demand a test from Vanessa to see if he is the dad, let's have a whose the daddy storyline not in secret for once
Emmerdale's producer Kate Oates has shared some juicy new teasers for the future of Vanessa Woodfield's pregnancy storyline - warning of meddling to come from Moira Dingle and Rakesh Kotecha.
Vanessa discovered that she is pregnant earlier this week, but her recent one-night stand with Adam Barton has left her fearing that her boyfriend Kirin may not be the father.
Although Vanessa is currently trying to conceal her uncertainty, it won't be long before the truth comes out - and Moira and Rakesh can't resist getting involved out of concern for their sons.
Speaking on Emmerdale's Facebook page, Oates commented: "Poor Vanessa - she had a terrible health scare. It meant that her life spiralled out of control for one night only, and she ended up waking up next to Adam Barton. She really regrets that, especially now she's pregnant.
"She's wondering if maybe she can put this to the back of her mind and just hope that the father of her child is Kirin, especially when he finds out that she is pregnant and he is so excited with that puppy dog excitement that boy has!"

She added: "I'm not sure how long Vanessa can keep that secret. She's a girl with conscience and when Moira finds out that maybe there's a potential grandchild on the scene, she's not going to let that lie.
"So how is Kirin going to respond to this, and more importantly how is Rakesh going to respond - is his ruthless side finally going to come out?"
Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa, recently told Digital Spy that she wants the father to be Kirin, suggesting that this outcome would have "interesting mileage".

Emmerdale's Vanessa Woodfield will grow closer to her ex-boyfriend Kirin Kotecha next week after she discovers that it was his father Rakesh who gave her the large sum of money.
Upcoming scenes will see Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) accuse Kirin of anonymously putting £10,000 through her letterbox, but viewers know that Rakesh is actually the mystery benefactor.
After realising that Kirin was not responsible, Vanessa's suspicious turn to her estranged father and she decides to pay him a visit.
But when he realises something is bothering Vanessa, Kirin (Adam Fielding) offers his support and she confides in him about the money she believes was sent by her father.
Later, as Vanessa decides she isn't ready to face her father, Kirin explains the situation to Rakesh, prompting him to feel increasingly guilty about his lies.
Vanessa soon discovers that it was actually Rakesh who gave her the money, and she confides in Carly about Rakesh paying her off in order to keep Kirin at bay.

As they chat, Carly has a different take on the situation to Vanessa and states that Kirin must really love Vanessa in order for Rakesh to have done that.
With Carly's words ringing in her ear, Vanessa tells Kirin the truth about his father's role in the money, prompting a furious Kirin to pack his bags and move back in with Vanessa.
Finally alone together, Kirin and Vanessa discuss their future and Kirin admits that he is still in love with her. However, he explains that he cannot face raising Adam's child, leaving the couple to ponder whether they can truly give their relationship another go.
Meanwhile, following the family fallout, Priya tries to persuade Rakesh to come clean and tell Kirin that he is the father - but will he listen?

Emmerdale spoilers: Vanessa Woodfield gives birth to prematurely following a fall
By Sophie Dainty
Tuesday, Sep 1 2015, 00:13 BST
Emmerdale's Vanessa Woodfield will give birth to her baby prematurely next week after she suffers a fall at Kirin and Belle's business launch.
Vanessa will delight her former boyfriend Kirin by going along to the factory to support his new venture, but the day takes a worrying turn when Kirin caches Jai Sharma snorting cocaine.
As Jai kicks off, Vanessa is pushed to the ground

Paranoid, Jai soon creates a scene in front of everybody, but it is Vanessa who gets caught in the crossfire when she is pushed to the floor.
Although Vanessa initially believes she is unharmed, she is later thrown into a panic when she realises she is going into labour.
Kirin is by Vanessa's side as she gives birth to her baby, but it is then touch and go as to whether the newborn will survive.

Kirin is concerned for Vanessa
Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa, said: "Kirin doesn't leave her side, he is with her and she needs him at that point.
"The baby is very premature and you will have to tune in and wait and see what happens. It is not 100 per cent alright and it is a really worrying time for everybody.
Speaking about filming the birth scenes, Hardwick said: "I have never had a child so I did a lot of youtubing watching various clips and videos. I wanted to find the right balance."

Vanessa goes into labour
"I was quite naive and I thought maybe because it is so premature, it wouldn't hurt as much because the baby is smaller, but obviously that is not correct at all.
"I did my research on that and it was a long day in that hospital bed. They are some of the most challenging scenes I have ever done but I loved it.
Hardwick also revealed that there will be huge repercussions when the truth about Vanessa's baby's paternity is finally revealed.

She added: "It has so many repercussions. Moira and James think they are grandparents and you've got Adam and Victoria playing new parents too. But really, none of them are related at all.
"Then you have Rakesh and Priya - who would have thought Priya would have kept this a secret? Especially with the baby being born so prematurely and there being so much worry. I am really excited for it."
Emmerdale airs Vanessa's birth scenes on Thursday September 10 and Friday September 11.

Emmerdale's Michelle Hardwick opens up on post natal depression storyline
The soap star reveals the twists in the road for Vanessa Woodfield and her premature baby Johnny.
After a one-night-stand with Adam led to an unexpected pregnancy, Vanessa Woodfield has found herself mother to a premature baby so poorly that she can’t even hold him. And racked with guilt, the new mum is hiding a secret: she hasn’t bonded with baby Johnny, and can barely stand to be in the hospital.
A mother’s guilt
Johnny, who is confined to an incubator after being born at just 26 weeks, is due for a major operation next week – and Vanessa is feeling “massive guilt”, says Michelle Hardwick, who’s played the character since 2012.
“She's not been able to touch Johnny, hold him to her, and she's just not coping at all right now,” the actress explains. “I think she feels very guilty, she sort of blames herself – like it's her fault he came early. She's blaming herself that she couldn't look after him whilst he was inside her, so she's carrying a huge, huge amount of guilt.”
Vanessa also feels too ashamed and scared to seek help.
“She’s feeling numb, and it's scaring the heck out of her,” admits Hardwick, 39. “She's definitely showing signs of post-natal depression after the research that I've done, and I spoke to a few women that have had it.”
Back to work
Looking for a distraction, and an escape from the hospital, Vanessa is desperate to get back to working at the vet’s. But sympathetic Paddy and Rhona want to give her time with Johnny - exactly what she doesn’t want.
“She's eager to get back to work so that she can actually avoid spending time at the hospital,” Hardwick explains. “Even just saying that, it sounds awful, horrendous, but that is her way of coping at the moment. She wants to brush it under the carpet by turning up at work, saying: 'I'm here! No it's fine! Adam's with the baby today', when actually she's probably telling a few fibs, just to try and avoid being there.”
Shared parenthood
While Vanessa is struggling to adjust to motherhood, Adam is thriving as a father.
“Adam has taken to being a father like a duck to water,” says Hardwick. “She's [Vanessa] very jealous of how Adam has bonded with Johnny. But they're getting by.”
Adam has girlfriend Victoria to support him and fuss over Johnny, and when a nurse mistakes Victoria for the baby’s mother, it’s a dagger in the heart for Vanessa.
“That actually tips Vanessa over the edge,” Hardwick reveals. “Because Victoria is playing the doting step-mum role alongside Adam, she's very jealous of how Victoria looks at Johnny and how she is with the baby. She snaps at Victoria, and unfortunately Victoria does take the brunt of quite a bit of an outburst.”
The real father
Vanessa is convinced that the baby is Adam’s, but fans of the ITV soap already know that Kirin is actually the true father. His dad Rakesh is keeping the secret under wraps, having doctored the DNA test results – and both Vanessa and Kirin have been left in the dark.
Unfortunately Kirin, convinced Vanessa is no longer interested in him, is focusing on life with Belle - something which only adds to her pain. “She's bumping into them, seeing that they're making a go of things, and deep down inside, it is hurting her, because she still does love Kirin,” Hardwick confesses. “He was around for the birth, and he was looking after her.”
Custody woes
But could a custody battle force Rakesh’s hand? When Vanessa eventually secretly confides in best friend Rhona that she isn’t coping, Rhona goes straight to Adam with the low-down.
Adam, not realising that he isn’t Johnny’s biological father, starts to make plans.
“He starts to think along the lines of: right well, if she's given up on our son already, I'm certainly not; what route can I go down as to custody rights?” notes Hardwick.
And when Adam asks Rakesh for advice about it, Rakesh is fearful that his lies might come crashing down on him.
Will the father’s true identity be revealed – or will Rakesh come up with a plan to hide the truth? Stay tuned to find out…

Vanessa deserved a slap tonight
Telly Watcher
24-12-2015, 01:33
It’s been a ticking timebomb for months – to the point that frustrated viewers have almost been pulling their hair out waiting for the big reveal.
But as 2016 kicks off, life is about to change forever for Vanessa Woodfield, Kirin Kotecha and Adam Barton as the truth about baby Johnny’s paternity is finally exposed.
Thanks to scheming Rakesh tampering with the DNA results, everyone is under the impression that Johnny is Adam’s son – but in actual fact, the bundle of joy was actually fathered by Kirin.
Vanessa’s suspicions are raised when she spots a unique mark on Johnny’s body – which leads her to carry out another DNA test with very different results.
Will there be some explosive drama as Adam and Kirin find out? Oh, you bet. Metro.co.uk recently chatted to the three central actors involved – Michelle Hardwick (Vanessa), Adam Fielding (Kirin) and Adam Thomas (Adam) – here’s what they had to say about the explosive start to 2016 in Emmerdale:
Is it a big relief to know that finally we’re going to know the truth?
Michelle: Yes, I think it is. It will be a huge relief I think. For Vanessa, she’s still got Johnny, although at this point she’s still not fully bonded with him. We hope that she will get there in time. And who knows, this might be the time when she does find out it’s Kirin’s. I think the person it’s going to hit the hardest is Adam Barton. It will turn his life upside down. I don’t know how Kirin’s going to feel when he realises he’s the dad.
Adam F: It’s come at a good time. The stakes have allowed through time to get higher. But people are wanting it and are invested in it so it’s exciting to see that
When Kirin hears the news, is it just total shock?
Adam F: Yeah, just gobsmacked. I read it recently and was trying to put myself as a human being in that situation and I think one of the things that must go through his mind is, why would you believe anything anyone’s saying? It’s just crazy.
And also, people are aware of it before he’s aware of it. They’re all anticipating his reaction and he’s like: ‘What the hell’s going on?’ I’m thinking about it more and more but I think it’s just absolute pure shock. What would a human being do? There’s so much going on, he’s just still. I think that’s what it comes down to.
Vanessa’s struggled to bond with the baby, how have you found working with the baby?
Michelle: I love working with him. Obviously you’re scared holding other people’s babies anyway and I’ve not got kids – you think: ‘Oh my goodness, am I holding him right?’ I’ve had him this morning and I’ve just had two weeks off work and he’s just grown in those weeks! He’s absolutely beautiful. He gets a bit grizzly when he’s tired and when he’s hungry, but it’s fine because I’ve been working with Adam and he’s like that, so it’s just the same really!
Adam F: I thought you meant Adam Thomas for a second and then it clicked and I was like: ‘You what?!’
Could you tell us about when she finds a patch on Johnny?
Michelle: “She’s changing his nappy or whatever and all of a sudden on his tailbone there’s a mark. She’s with Rhona and Carly at the time and thinks: ‘Oh my God, what’s that?’ She thinks it’s a bruise and then she panics, saying: ‘That’s not me, I’ve not hurt him, I’ve not touched him’. Because she thinks she’s a bad mum anyway so she thinks everyone will blame her. Carly suggests they call the midwife in.
Do Vanessa and Kirin still love each other?
Michelle: I think for Vanessa, she’s never stopped loving him. But with everything that she’s gone through, she’s put him up on a shelf somewhere. But I think the feelings have never ever gone.
Adam F: The more I see them on screen together and the more I see the way we work together, they’re just good for each other and right for each other. I just think that Kirin does love Vanessa because they just look good together. They just mingle well.
Adam T: Who, me and you?
Adam F: Yeah, me and you are in love, mate!
Do you think Kirin will be willing to step up and be a dad or will he run away from it all?
Adam F: I think he’s going to seriously try. Through the whole thing he’s always wanted a little bit of it to be his and has accepted that it wasn’t. I think it’s in his nature as well, he’s motivated to try. He’s not going to want to do what his dad’s done to him, he’s going to want to be everything for baby Johnny.
Adam’s not happy about this news is he?
Adam T: He’s not happy, no. Because he didn’t expect it, it was hard for him to get his head round at first, but now he’s finally got his head round it and he doesn’t see anything else apart from his son. He wants to be there for his son. James wasn’t there for him, he wasn’t really his dad and he let him off on his own. He just wants to be there and has given everything. Vanessa was going through a hard time and he just wants everything to be alright for his son.
Michelle: And Adam was so supportive throughout the whole way. And Victoria, for a young girl…
Adam T: For her to take that on, it’s massive.
Adam’s love for baby Johnny is still there, even though he’s not the dad. Is that what he struggles with?
Adam T: Completely, because in his eyes, he’s his dad and that’s his son. For someone to take that away from him, I don’t know how anyone could deal with that. I’ve got a son of my own and I can’t imagine anyone turning around to me and saying: ‘He’s not yours’. It’s going to be hard to play, but hopefully I’ll do it justice. It’s going to be a massive thing for Adam definitely.
He loses the plot a little bit, doesn’t he?
Adam T: He goes off the rails a little bit, yeah – as per, as you do in soap! I don’t know how far it’s going to go. I’ve not really read that far yet.
Might Adam take the baby and run off?
Adam T: Maybe, we’ll just have to wait and see!
Do you think Adam will still want to be involved in Johnny’s life, whatever happens?
Adam T: I’d like to think so, yeah – because he does love him, do you know what I mean? I don’t think that will ever change, but obviously he’s got to give some way for Kirin because he is the dad and it’s going to be hard for him. I’d like to see what happens between Kirin and Adam really, and if it comes to blows, anything like that. I think it’d be interesting.
Adam F: I think Adam is the biggest victim in it, out of the whole thing. Like you just said, you’ve got a son in real life and if that was taken away… if someone did that. The stakes are high for Adam’s character.
Michelle: It’s his world that’s turned upside-down the most.
Are you looking forward to filming a big showdown with Pasha Bocarie (Rakesh) when it all comes out?
Michelle: Oh yeah, I think it’ll be great. I don’t know how, but it’ll be fantastic. I’m sure we’ll all be there.
Adam T: I hope I get to lay him out!
How would Vanessa feel towards Priya who – as a woman and a mum – knew the truth and didn’t say anything?
Michelle: I don’t know if she’ll go ballistic or if it’ll just be despair: How on earth could you do something like that as a mum? How could you, especially when they were in the hospital? I think Vanessa might just think, ‘Look we’ve got to start afresh now, no more shouting, everything’s out in the open. Let’s just all move on and try and be the family that we haven’t been’. She might go down that route, who knows? If it was me she’d be on the floor!
Would you like the baby to bring Vanessa and Kirin back together?
Michelle: Yeah I think so. Like Adam said, we worked well as a little unit, him and me – we had laughs and stuff.
Adam T: Who do you like working with better now?
Michelle: Normally he says who’s the best kisser!
Adam T: That’s no competition, do you know what I mean?! [Laughs.]
Michelle: So we’ll just move on!
This is a fantastic storyline, are you happy to have it Adam?
Adam T: Any storyline I’m happy to have, to be honest with you! It’s just nice to be able to get your teeth into something like this. It’s a great storyline and to be involved with these two actors, it’s a privilege so I’m over the moon.
What’s it going to mean for Adam and Victoria’s relationship?
Adam T: She’s stuck by him through this whole thing, so I think she’s going to stick by him again. She’s got to be there for him. Secretly she’s probably buzzing. I mean you would be, wouldn’t you? But I think she’s definitely going to stick with him. They’re massively in love and they’re husband and wife now. So they’ve gone through a lot at such an early stage. I hope she sticks by me anyway because I like working with Izzy and she’s a good kisser as well!
Will this blow Kirin and Rakesh’s relationship apart?
Adam F: I hope so – surely. You can’t do that! You can’t… well you can move on from that, but come on now – that is ridiculous behaviour. I’ve always said this as well. If you saw that on Sky News… you know, you sign out of Hotmail and it comes up on MSN News: ‘Lawyer doctored results’. You’d read it and go: ‘This guy’s off his nut. That lawyer is mental. This is crazy. What must the son be going through?’ If I was Kirin and I had a dad like Rakesh and I found that out, you can’t… surely no! Who knows? You’re not going to have a steak with him by the Saturday, surely?
Rakesh might say he did it for Kirin’s benefit…
Adam F: Of course he’ll say that. He’ll give him all of that. He’s right in his own eyes – everyone’s right in their own eyes. But he was wrong to do it and Kirin’s no fool, really. If anything, it’s just going to be a motivating factor to go and do better for Johnny. So I don’t think he’ll ever go past Rakesh’s reasoning, because I don’t think Kirin cares enough about the values that Rakesh cares about in terms of work. Kirin doesn’t move like that, he’s more emotional in terms of his approach to humans.”
Will Kirin want revenge? Technically he could get his dad struck off as a lawyer.
Adam F: Yeah maybe, he’s shown that history before hasn’t he? It could be good, he could do something like that. That’s still an option.
What are you doing for New Year?
Michelle: New Year’s Eve, back to mine, back to my aunty’s and we have a massive Hardwick family party. That’s mine – same thing every year.
Adam T: At New Year, a bit of partying I reckon. I might go away – I’m not going to tell you where. Yeah I don’t know, I might see what happens, I don’t know yet.
Adam F: I never liked New Year – it’s stupid innit? We always put nibbles out and we’ll always put BBC or ITV… ITV countdown on!! Is it the BBC countdown or ITV? We’ll watch that, but by the end of it we’ll just end up watching a film. There’s usually grapes out.
Adam T: I thought you meant Countdown the show and thought what a boring New Year’s Eve!
Adam F: New Year’s is always boring though. I’ve always had a boring New Year. Nothing goes on at New Year’s.
What New Year’s resolutions are you planning to make?
Michelle: I don’t because I always break them, so what’s the point?
Adam T: Just to learn my lines to be honest with you.
Adam F: “I don’t have them for the opposite reason – just be better, stronger, faster, hungrier, that’s it, always, every day. There is no resolution, that’s it, that’s the attitude.

I am now conflicted a part of me wants Vanessa and Kirin together but another part of me feels he should be with someone his own age like Belle. I also think Vanessa should be with Pete Barton.
Emmerdale's Vanessa Woodfield will make a very surprising move next week, as she sabotages an attempt to give Rakesh Kotecha his long-awaited comeuppance.
Vanessa's life has been turned upside-down thanks to Rakesh (Pasha Bocarie), after the scheming lawyer tampered with the results of a DNA test that she'd arranged for her baby son Johnny.
With the whole truth now out and everyone aware that Rakesh's son Kirin is the real father, thoughts in the village turn to possible payback next week.
Kirin (Adam Fielding) confides in Vanessa by vowing that it's time Rakesh faced the music, but she has other ideas and ruins his plans when the police turn up to ask questions about what happened.
Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa, revealed: "Vanessa thinks they've all been through so much already. Johnny has already got one granddad in prison - Vanessa's dad. Although she doesn't want Rakesh to have anything to do with them at the moment - at least until they've got over what he's done - she doesn't want to see him in prison either.
"Vanessa just wants a new year and a new start for all of them. I don't think she wants revenge - certainly not by that route. She might think that just stopping Rakesh and Priya from seeing their grandchild is revenge enough. But she certainly doesn't want to involve the police."
Expressing surprise over Vanessa's mild reaction, Hardwick laughed: "I would be totally the opposite. I'd get Rakesh struck off and I'd have the police on him like a ton of bricks! I would absolutely not let him get away with it - but that's just me! Vanessa's so much nicer than me!
"She's got a good head on her shoulders and she's a good friend to everyone. But I certainly would not turn a blind eye to that."
With Vanessa keen to move on and the truth starting to sink in for everyone, could it be that 2016 will be a more blissful year for the unlucky vet?
Hardwick said: "Well it'd be really nice if it was! I think Vanessa deserves a little bit of happiness and stability after the year she's had. It'd be quite nice if she could just have a happy family, keep her involvement at the vets and be a friend to everyone. Of course it's soap and that's not going to happen, but we'll have to watch this space."

A recent interview given by actor Michelle Hardwick [Vanessa] to Scottish TV presenter Gill Harvey suggests that Vanessa and Adam's fling a while back really was a one night stand but that Adam will now help Vanessa to raise Kirin's baby, Johnny.
Gill Harvey: "Could there still be a spark there?" [felt by Vanessa for Adam]
Michelle Hardwick: "Oh, gosh, no. I don't think so, no, because that was just a one drunken one night and stand but, I think, as friendship goes, they do care about each other because of what they've been through and I think, like I say, he's gonna be, he's gonna be really there for her and Johnny, so I think she'll allow him to be part of his life."

Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has signed a new contract that will keep her on the show for another 12 months.
The actress, who plays Vanessa Woodfield in the ITV soap, has been promised some exciting storylines, including a possible new romance.
However, Hardwick is also hoping that the opportunity will allow writers to explore Vanessa's past a bit more.
Speaking about her new deal, Hardwick told the Daily Star: "I've just got another year. It feels great. It's very exciting. And it's a huge compliment.
"I'm enjoying being on the show so much and I'd like to just stay there for the foreseeable future.
"I've got no idea what's going to happen but I'd quite like to delve into Vanessa's past and see where her roots are. We don't really know that much about her."

her and marlon are very pally
Emmerdale's Vanessa Woodfield may finally score a victory in her bitter war with Pierce Harris next week, as she convinces a face from his past to visit the village.
Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) has recently become desperate to expose Pierce's sinister true colours, hating the influence he has over her best friend Rhona Goskirk.
As Pierce and Rhona's wedding gets ever closer next week, Pierce catches up with an old university friend and Vanessa is eagle-eyed as ever – determined to find any evidence that she can use against him.
Vanessa is intrigued when she spots Pierce's friend hand over a note to him, which he quickly discards. Unable to resist retrieving it as part of her ongoing detective work, Vanessa is furious over the note's contents and decides to take action after seeing a phone number on it.
Continuing to play with fire, Vanessa uses the number to arrange a meeting with a mystery person – and given how quickly Pierce disposed of that note, we have a feeling it's someone that he won't be too keen to see!
Everything then comes to a head on the evening of Pierce and Rhona's stag and hen parties, with Pierce jealously gatecrashing Rhona's happy night at The Woolpack to keep an eye on what she's up to.
Rhona turns a blind eye to Pierce's latest possessive behaviour and is happy to see him there, but the celebratory atmosphere doesn't last for long when Vanessa suddenly walks in with a mystery guest.
Pierce and Rhona are both shocked by the unexpected arrival, but will the stranger put a stop to the wedding? Let's hope so...

At first I thought the same thing about charity, Vanessa is only a toy for her to play with. But it would be nice to see Charity happy in love with someone other than herself. And Vanessa maybe that someone. Interesting to see how this plays out.
so chatter on line that di bails will attack vanessa
attack her how? Some kind of sexual assault or attempted murder?
stabbed and carjacked with johnny in new year
i can't stand her since she has became charity's doormat
I won't be popular for saying this but I don't find any chemistry between her and Charity and I hope they don't get married. There was virtually no interaction between them before they got together so they've no previous friendship to build upon. It started out as a completely physical relationship, initiated by Charity because she felt like it, and it all felt a bit predatory and one sided to me. If a man had treated Vanessa like that there would have been uproar about it.
In friendship terms, Charity gets on better with Chas and Vanessa gets on better with Rhona. If the producer had wanted a lesbian couple, why not introduce new characters?
charity has more chemistry with frank
michelle and partner kate got hitched
let her be gone for a while, she is beyond annoying
Totally agree she is annoying and one of the worst characters in the show, her and charity is prob the boring couple in the show, charity was a good character but is boring, hope when moria gets found out she have more scenes with cain, she has more chem with cain does charity, her and vanessa no chemistry what so ever (boring).

Emmerdale welcomes back Vanessa Woodfield next week as part of the show's Christmas storylines.
Vanessa has been absent from our screens for well over a year, but is now returning to the show on a permanent basis as Michelle Hardwick ? who plays her ? is back from maternity leave.
Viewers will see Vanessa thrown straight back into the action, as she supports her sister Tracy (Amy Walsh) through an upsetting break-up and also faces tensions of her own with her ex-fianc?e Charity (Emma Atkins).
Digital Spy recently caught up with Michelle to hear more about what's ahead.
How does it feel to be back on the show?
"Oh my goodness! After 19 months, it just feels like forever. Every time I saw people they were asking: 'When are you back on Emmerdale, when are you back on Emmerdale?'
"When I first walked on set, it was literally like I'd had two weeks off. It was exactly the same ? apart from the Covid restrictions. I can't hug my on-screen sister in a scene and that's more challenging than you think, actually.
"I was really excited to be back. I was very nervous, I must admit. You think: 'Can you still do it? Can you still learn your lines with a little one-year-old?' But so far, so good."
Did you watch the show while you were away?
"I did a little bit. Not religiously ? I've been busy and that's bath and bed time! But I absolutely loved Super Soap Week. It was fantastic ? I was hooked like everyone else. I thought Paige [Sandhu, who plays Meena], Fiona [Wade, who plays Priya] and Rebecca [Sarker, who plays Manpreet] were unreal ? I loved it."
What brings Vanessa back to the village?
"Initially she comes back around Christmas time ? just after Christmas. She brings the Christmas presents for Tracy and Frankie. She's thinking it's just going to be a flying visit.
"Vanessa is not daft, so she is aware that Charity is with Mackenzie. Obviously her sister has kept her in the loop. A lot of time has passed and a lot of water is under the bridge.
"What Vanessa didn't expect is that the first people she sees are Charity and Mackenzie. And not only seeing them, but seeing them declaring their undying love for each other, right in front of her.
"For me, Vanessa isn't jealous because it's been a long time. It doesn't upset her. Tracy says: 'You knew they were together, it's not a shock'. But Vanessa points out that, when she sees them in person, it's a reminder of what Charity put her through when she was going through cancer and the treatment.
"It's like: 'Wow, okay'. The first thing she sees is those two rubbing her nose in it."
We see Vanessa get involved in Tracy's split from Nate, don't we?
"Yes, she has got an involvement. It's not Vanessa's fault, but she is involved in a way. What happens does then make Vanessa stick around for her sister, as she wants to be there for her.
"Let's be honest, Tracy has been through all this with Post Natal Depression and Vanessa was still at her mum's. She still feels really guilty about that, so she wants to be there 100% for Tracy and do everything she can. She's going above and beyond to make up for the time she wasn't there."
After Nate is dumped by Tracy, there's a scene where he turns up wanting to see baby Frankie, but Vanessa turns him away. Does Vanessa think she's doing the right thing?
"Yeah, she does. I love that side of Vanessa ? the little meddling side to her where she thinks she's doing the right thing. She sends Nate packing on more than one occasion. She's stopping him from not only seeing Tracy but also Frankie.
"Vanessa thinks she's protecting her sister, whereas we know that's not going to turn out well, is it? She gets a bit of a telling off from Tracy. She's not a happy bunny at all.
"Vanessa says: 'I'm only trying to protect you, I'm only trying to look out for you. I wasn't there before but I am now. I was only trying to help'. And she was."
Vanessa also learns that Charity wants to spend time with Johnny?
"Yeah, Vanessa's not into that at all. That's because Charity has not seen Johnny for such a long time and she's trying to protect him. I know there was the adoption before Vanessa left to go and see her mum, but I don't think Vanessa thinks it's healthy for Charity to be spending so much time with Johnny.
"Obviously they're going to be seeing each other because they live in the same village, but Vanessa's not a fan. Whether that changes or not in the future, I don't know, but certainly for now she doesn't want that to happen."
Are we seeing a feistier Vanessa now?
"Without a shadow of a doubt. I always think back to when Vanessa first arrived and she was this feisty party girl. I think we lost a bit of that when she was with Charity and I'd like to see a bit of the old Vanessa back.
"I'd like her to speak her mind a bit more and not have to answer to anyone. I do think what she has been through has certainly toughened her up. So come on Vanessa!"
Have you missed Vanessa?
"Yeah ? she's been with me for nine years now so you do miss your character. But as soon as you get back and get the yellow coat back and the hair in a pony, it was quite easy to hear her voice again."
In real life, how's it going being a mum to your son Teddy?
"I'm absolutely loving it. Though Teddy must have known I had a 5.50am start this morning because he sleeps really well, apart from last night! I was in make-up at 7am with bleary eyes and had two big scenes with Amy."
How was it to see everyone at work?
"Oh, it was so good. Don't get me wrong, obviously I've seen my close friends from work when I was pregnant and then after Teddy was born ? I've seen them quite a lot. But just seeing people and seeing the crew has been absolutely fantastic.
"I've been working with Amy Walsh who I adore, and Dominic Brunt [who plays Paddy] who's one of my best mates, it's just gorgeous. To get into the swing of things again and have a laugh with them ? it's great."
With Amy now about to become a mum, have you shared any tips?
"All we do on set is talk about babies ? I'm sure everyone is really sick of us. But as soon as I'm back she'll be going on maternity. I'm not even joking when I say we talk non-stop about it. It's just really, really exciting. There was me and Laura Norton and now Amy ? it's brilliant."

Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick reprised her role as Vanessa Woodfield in Friday's episode (February 9).
A surprise cliffhanger saw Vanessa turn up at a remote cottage to visit her best friend Rhona Goskirk, who has fled from the village with baby Ivy.
Vanessa left the village for a new job in Canada in November 2022, with the temporary exit storyline written in to explain Michelle's real-life maternity leave. Michelle is now back filming as a show regular.
Here, Michelle chats about Vanessa's reappearance and the big drama to come involving Rhona.
How does it feel to be filming Emmerdale again?
"It is absolutely fabulous. I suppose I'm just going into work for a bit of a rest now! (Laughs.) I can maybe finish a cup of tea or nip to the toilet on my own without hearing: 'Mummy, mummy!'
"I'm loving it ? I actually feel like I've never been away, even though it's been 14 months. I was worried about not being able to learn lines, but they have gone back in, thank goodness."
Can you remind us where Vanessa has been?
"Vanessa has been to Canada and she took her son Johnny with her. She was looking after all of these different animals and it was a sabbatical for just over a year. She was away in Canada having an absolute ball and now she's back."
What brought Vanessa back?
"Out of the blue, Vanessa received a phone call from Rhona, who said that she needed help and really needed her. Vanessa didn't ask any questions because she felt that there wasn't any time. She packed a quick bag for her, a quick bag for Johnny, jumped on a flight and came to see Rhona."
What does Vanessa think about Rhona running off with Ivy?
"Vanessa turned up at the cottage where Rhona is staying and saw Ivy there. Vanessa already knew about Ivy because obviously she's spoken to Rhona while she's been away, but she had no idea that Rhona had actually run off with the baby and essentially kidnapped the child.
"It's a massive shock to Vanessa. First of all she's thinking: 'What the heck are you doing?' There's blind panic running through her. She's also thinking: 'I'm here now, I'm an accomplice to this! Am I going to get done as well? What's going to happen to Johnny?'
"There's all of that racing through Vanessa's head, but she also wants to help her friend. She tries to reason with Rhona and says that they have to go back. She says that Rhona won't be in any trouble, but Rhona doesn't want to hear any of that. Vanessa is desperately trying to do the right thing."
Does part of Vanessa understand where Rhona is coming from?
"Absolutely ? without a shadow of a doubt and it breaks Vanessa's heart as well. Vanessa is a mother and she can totally understand it, but she's also saying: 'You've got April at home, you've got Leo, they need you as much as Ivy does. So you've got to think of the bigger picture'.
"But Vanessa absolutely understands that this would just be tearing Rhona apart and the fear of losing this little baby is tenfold."
The situation escalates next week. Will Rhona blame Vanessa when the police turn up?
"Yes, she absolutely will. Vanessa does choose to tell people where Rhona is and it's an awful, heartbreaking decision.
"There's barely any signal in this very remote cottage that Rhona has found, but Vanessa finally manages to get in touch with the village. It's Mary that she manages to get in touch with. Mary then tells Marlon, and Marlon turns up at the cottage.
"Marlon also tells Gus, but he doesn't realise that Gus has told the police. They all turn up en masse and it's awful because Vanessa knows she's betrayed her friend, but deep down she knows she's done the right thing.
"Rhona can't go on the run with this baby for the rest of her life, because that's no life for her or that child. The longer it would have gone on, the worse it would have been. But ultimately Rhona will blame all of this on Vanessa ? as always!"
Will this incident cause Vanessa to come back into the village properly?
"Yes, Vanessa is going to go back into the village with Johnny. Then she's got all the trouble with Tracy to deal with, because Tracy and Nate are having really bad relationship issues.
"Vanessa thinks: 'I've been away now for over a year, I am coming home soon anyway'. I think she just cuts it shorter than she would have done as she thinks Rhona needs her, Tracy needs her, so that's where she now needs to be.
"Vanessa goes back to Canada to tie up everything there, gets all of her stuff and they come back for good."
What does Vanessa make of Tracy's marriage breakdown?
"Vanessa doesn't know about Tracy's fling with Caleb first of all ? she's just aware that Tracy and Nate have split up. Tracy is saying that she doesn't love Nate anymore and the marriage just wasn't right. Vanessa is like: 'It's only been seven months!'
"Vanessa tells Tracy that she'll stand by her and they'll get through it. She suggests that, if Tracy and Nate stay friends, maybe they'll get the spark back.
"Deep down, Vanessa thinks they'll get back on track, until it all comes out about the affair. Vanessa is so against affairs after what's happened to her in the past, but ultimately this is her sister. She does stick by her sister ? of course she does, because she loves the bones of her."
What else is in store for Vanessa?
"When Vanessa left, we left it on a very positive note between her and Suzy. Even though they weren't together, they had a little kiss and it was all very lovely.
"But Vanessa is completely unaware of a potential relationship between Mary and Suzy. Mary, who Vanessa sees as a mother figure! But Vanessa is totally oblivious to this. She's going to maybe try and get her relationship back on track with Suzy, but whether Suzy wants to or not, we'll have to wait and see."
"I managed to dip in and out. Obviously it's 'bath and bed time' for the kids when the show is on, but I have.
"I cried my eyes out at Tony Audenshaw's performance as Bob after Heath died. I just thought Tony, Susan Cookson (Wendy), Lesley Dunlop (Brenda), Gabrielle Dowling (Cathy) and all the other kids played a blinder. It was absolutely wonderful.
"I really enjoyed it ? I know it sounds weird to say 'enjoyed', but they were really powerful episodes that really pulled at your heartstrings. I saw Tony the other day and told him that he'd had me crying my eyes out!"
What was it like being reunited with your co-stars?
"Oh, lovely! Don't get me wrong, I've seen all of my close friends ? they've come to visit and have seen the kids. I've kept in touch with a few of them. But just seeing people out and about, and in the corridor and green room, it was so lovely. It was the crew as well and the make-up room ? it was such a nice welcome back.
"People said 'You've been so missed' and that's really nice. I felt very welcomed and I'm really enjoying being back, juggling motherhood with work like loads of people do. I'm loving it and really pleased to be back."
