Over on EastEnders, an emotional day for returnee Sharon Rickman could lead to her finally becoming friends with Tanya Cross.

When Sharon's son Dennis starts his new school next month, the Walford blonde can't help but worry about him as he seems to be struggling to make friends.

As the situation fails to improve, overprotective Sharon (Letitia Dean) decides to keep Dennis off school. She then takes the youngster with her to the R&R while she catches up with love interest Jack Branning.

Soon afterwards, however, Sharon is suddenly startled when she realises that Dennis has wandered off and is nowhere to be seen.

A frantic search follows, but fortunately Sharon eventually spots Dennis outside the Queen Vic.

Relieved but emotional, Sharon blurts out to Dennis that this is where his father died.

After watching from afar, a concerned Tanya (Jo Joyner) approaches and realises that Sharon needs a friend. Will this be a fresh start for the feuding pair?

Monday
Kat stares at the message that her mystery man wrote for her on the bandage, and realises that she is also falling for him. However, she soon has more immediate matters to worry about when Alfie announces that The Vic has an infestation of bed bugs. A shocked Kat immediately blames Shirley for this and orders her to pack her bags. With the pub being forced to close for fumigation, Alfie tells Kat that she'll have to move out for a few days. However, Kat is reluctant to be apart from Alfie, knowing that she won't be able to resist the temptation of her secret lover if she leaves.

Kat ultimately realises that she has no choice, so she packs her bags and stuffs the incriminating bandage into a bag of things which are to be cleaned at the pub. Soon afterwards, the temptation does indeed become too much for Kat, and she meets her mystery guy at the bedsit. Later, Kat finds a photograph of Alfie and Tommy, which Alfie had lovingly packed in her bag. Touched by the kind gesture, Kat is filled with guilt - realising that with two men in love with her, this situation can only end with someone's heart being broken…

Meanwhile, Max has failed to turn up to take Oscar for his first day of school. On the phone to Tanya, Max insists that he is stuck on the motorway. In reality, however, he is outside a flat and heading towards the door. He considers ringing the bell, but hesitates and instead posts an envelope through before walking away. What is Max up to?

Elsewhere, Ian is pleased when Lucy agrees to let him take Bobby to school. However, he becomes anxious when he realises that he has forgotten to give Bobby an apple that he picked out especially for him. Returning to the school gates, a distressed Ian calls out to Bobby - attracting the attention of new teaching assistant Masood. Concerned by Ian's fragile state, Masood suggests that he needs counselling. Ian soon realises that he's right and asks for help.

Also today, Sharon and Tanya fling insults at each other in front of the other parents after taking Denny and Oscar to school, Cora and Patrick help Lucy to make a good impression as she welcomes the reviewer of a local guide to the café, while Jean continues to be a good friend to Shirley by encouraging her not to give up hope.

Tuesday
Phil is still desperate for Shirley to come home, but she stands firm - convinced that he is only trying to conceal his involvement in the cover-up by keeping her quiet. Later, Shirley turns her attentions to a sleazy bloke named Pete at the R&R, knowing that he will buy her a drink. Phil soon arrives in yet another attempt to talk to Shirley, but she still isn't interested. As the ex-couple exchange words, Sharon has a run-in of her own with Pete and orders him out when he tries to take advantage of her.

As Pete leaves the club, he takes Shirley with him, while Sharon informs Phil of how Pete has just behaved. A concerned Phil follows the pair outside and spots Pete trying to make a move on Shirley, despite her attempts to knock him back. Shirley is grateful when Phil intervenes by hitting Pete, but it's still not enough - she can't help but think that he only cares about protecting himself. At the end of his tether, Phil makes a phone call to someone who might be able to help…

Meanwhile, Kat pays a visit to The Vic and panics when Alfie says that he's doing some washing. Realising that the incriminating bandage is in the washing bag, Kat fears that her secret will be exposed. She then tries her best to get the bandage back before it's too late, but it's to no avail. Later, still fearing the worst, Kat goes to the R&R and catches up with Tanya. As they chat about their respective partners, Tanya confesses that she wishes Max was more like Alfie. But does Kat wish Alfie was more like Max?

At the same time, over at the pub, Alfie finds the "I love you" message on the bandage, as written by Kat's mystery guy. Will he put two and two together and realise that Kat is having an affair?

Elsewhere, with Masood having to work, he encourages a reluctant Zainab to help out Ian today. Zainab initially has no patience with Ian, but when she spots him struggling to place a food order for the chip shop, she's shocked to see how he isn't coping with the simplest things. Ian soon realises that he needs professional help.

Thursday
Denise finds Shirley sleeping rough outside the Minute Mart, so brings her back to the B&B. Jay is uncomfortable at being in close proximity to Shirley and initially decides to avoid her. However, following some advice from Patrick, the teenager tries to have a heart-to-heart with Shirley. His efforts backfire, though, when a furious Shirley forces him against the wall, declaring that he and Ben should both be hanged. Denise soon realises that Shirley will never be able to forgive Jay or Phil, so she advises her to leave Walford to escape the painful memories.

Later, Shirley prepares to depart Albert Square, but decides to pay one last visit to Phil's house with a bottle of whiskey in her hand. After trying to taunt Phil, a fragile Shirley slumps out on the sofa. Phil then takes action by making a desperate phone call, ordering the person on the other end to come to the house. Soon afterwards, Shirley refuses to stay under Phil's roof for any longer and starts stumbling through the market. Just as she is about to pass out in the gutter, Shirley is left stunned to see her daughter Carly in front of her. Carly is back after being contacted by Phil, but she is disgusted by the state Shirley is in, so turns and walks away…

Meanwhile, Janine wants Michael to look after Scarlett while she works in the office. Michael initially refuses as he claims he has lots of appointments, but is eventually forced to relent. When Janine then checks the diary and finds it empty, her paranoia intensifies as she wonders why Michael lied. She is also horrified to find a cheque book stub for £20,000 and no named recipient. Janine confronts Michael over his mysterious behaviour, only for him to reveal an expensive sports car he has bought her as a surprise. When Janine continues to question Michael, he finally loses patience over her mistrust and storms off.

Elsewhere, Sharon is worried about Dennis as he is struggling to make friends in school. When Dennis talks to Jack about his problems, Jack encourages him to make an effort in school so that his mum can stop worrying about him. However, Sharon is listening in and immediately warns Jack that it's not his place to give Dennis advice.

Friday

Shirley wakes up at Phil's house, as she passed out on his sofa last night. Carly then turns up to see Shirley, as Denise has now told her the full story about why her mother is in such a state. Although the pair soon begin sniping at each other, Shirley is touched when Carly explains that her son is called Jimmy, after Shirley's late son. However, Carly tells Shirley that she doesn't have Jimmy with her, as she would never want to introduce him to a mess like her.

Later, Phil catches up with Carly at the B&B, insisting that he can't help Shirley. He thrusts a wad of cash into Carly's hand, telling her to let Shirley go with her. Carly refuses the cash, but soon has a proper heart-to-heart with Shirley at last. As the ice between mother and daughter begins to melt, Carly finally reveals Jimmy and lets Shirley hold him. Carly then asks her mum to move in with them, and Shirley agrees as she wants a fresh start. However, as she prepares to leave Walford, Shirley warns Phil to always be on his guard as she will be back…

Meanwhile, following some advice from Jean, Jay continues to persist with Shirley. Before she leaves, Jay makes a heartfelt apology to Shirley and becomes emotional when she finally accepts.

Elsewhere, Sharon decides to keep Dennis off school, still concerned that he is finding it hard to make friends. However, after taking Dennis to the R&R while she catches up with Jack, Sharon is suddenly startled when she realises that her son is nowhere to be found. A frantic search follows, and Sharon eventually spots Dennis outside The Vic. Relieved but emotional, she blurts out to him that this is where his father died. Dennis begins to question Sharon as she had previously told him that his dad died a hero. However, Sharon is grateful when Tanya interrupts, realising that she needs a friend. Heading to the Branning house, Tanya and Sharon decide to make a fresh start as friends.

Also today, Kat decides to make a fresh start for her and her family, but will it turn out to be as easy as she had hoped?

An emotional Shirley Carter realises that it may be time to leave Walford in EastEnders tonight (September 6).

Following a night sleeping rough outside the Minute Mart, Shirley (Linda Henry) is brought back to the B&B by caring Denise Fox, who is keen to help her as much as she can.

Denise's plan has a flaw, however, as Jay is also still staying at the B&B - and tensions explode as Shirley comes face-to-face with him again.

When Jay tries to apologise for everything, a furious Shirley forces him up against the wall and declares that he hasn't been punished enough for helping to cover up the truth about Heather's murder.

Denise (Diane Parish) is shocked by the extent of Shirley's anger, and soon suggests that she should consider a fresh start elsewhere - away from the painful memories.

Just as Shirley agrees, there's a further twist as her daughter Carly returns…

EastEnders airs tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
