Hollyoaks sixth-former George Smith is a world away from his recent homelessness ordeal next week as he becomes an intern at fashion magazine Company.

George travels down to London for the opportunity alongside Esther Bloom (Jazmine Franks), eager to prove himself following a difficult year.

Events soon take an unexpected turn when George is bowled over by fellow intern Ryan (George Evans) - could romance blossom between the pair?

Digital Spy recently chatted to Steven Roberts, who plays George, to hear about the storyline.

What was it like to film the Company magazine episodes?
"It was really good fun. It was lovely to go on location, as we got to visit London for a couple of days to film the episodes. It was quite a full-on schedule as we had a lot to fit in, and you have to work a bit quicker when you're on location - but it was really enjoyable too.

"We were filming right in the centre of London. We went to Carnaby Street, we went along the riverbank by the Thames and by the London Eye. So it was great to take Hollyoaks out of the village for a couple of days."

How does George feel about taking on this new challenge?
"Well, obviously George has had a tough year so far, so I think he needs something like this to boost his confidence. It'll hopefully show that he is capable of standing on his own two feet with something that he's good at.

"After going from being homeless at the beginning of the year to now living with the Kanes, George is gaining confidence slowly but surely. This is something that he loves to do, so it's good for him."

Is George glad to have Esther by his side?
"He is. This is something that George wasn't sure he could do at first, but it's Esther who gives him the courage to do it. When they go down to London together, it's the beginning of consolidating their friendship.

"Obviously George and Esther already know each other from the village, but it's here that they start to realise they maybe have a lot more in common than they first thought and actually they could be really good friends."

How does George feel when Esther ruins an important outfit before a fashion shoot?
"Well, I think he's shocked first of all, and then he's also disappointed because he wanted to come to Company and make a good impression - he didn't want there to be any problems. But Esther is still his friend, so while he's disappointed, he's not nasty about it."

We know that Esther finds it difficult to fit in, but is it the same for George?
"I think George is still nervous, but Esther puts her foot in it a little bit more than he does! Of course, George also meets Ryan, so I think he's maybe just a little bit more distracted by Ryan than he should be. It's all a bit of a whirlwind for him."

Are you glad to be exploring George's first romance storyline?
"Yeah, I think it's nice that it's being explored now, especially because George has had such a tough year. But I think because of his past, he does find it difficult to trust people. He knows who his friends are in the Hollyoaks village, he knows that he's got his family back too, but he's cautious of new people who come into his life."

Do George and Ryan have a lot in common?
"Ryan is a lot more confident - he's the type of guy who will go up to a bar and order a drink, whereas George would be worried about getting caught and not having an ID!

"Ryan is more outgoing, but I think that'll be good for George - he needs someone like that around him to encourage him to build his confidence. I wouldn't say they're chalk and cheese, but they are different."

You've also recently filmed the upcoming Abersoch episodes. Did you enjoy the experience?
"Yeah, it was brilliant - Abersoch is beautiful. We were so lucky with the weather, because just as we were going, we thought it was going to rain all week but when we got there, it was glorious sunshine!

"It was like we were abroad - the beach was beautiful, we saw dolphins one day, and all of the Abersoch residents were really nice as well."

Did you get any downtime to enjoy the nice weather?
"We were quite lucky. We were busy, but I did have a couple of mornings off and went kayaking across the bay, and also had a little walk round and explored the souvenir shops. It was a hard week of work, but we had some little chances to let off steam as well."

Ryan turns up in Abersoch - is that a pre-planned arrangement?
"No, that's a complete surprise to George, and I think that's when he suddenly sees his two worlds colliding. He gets on really well with his friends, but he feels a bit awkward about introducing Ryan to them - he's not really sure how to deal with Ryan in front of his friends."

Do George and Ryan have a future, or will it be a short-term thing?
"At the moment, we're not sure. It's blossoming and there is an attraction between them. It's getting there, but I don't know what the future holds for them yet!"

You had a huge storyline earlier this year. Do the Deena episodes stand out as a highlight for you so far?
"Definitely - they were the most exciting to film, I think. But I've been very lucky with what I've been given in general - I've had some really lovely opportunities like going to London and Abersoch, and all of the Deena stuff as well. It's been really great fun."

George and Phoebe's friendship has been through some ups and downs. Do you think they've turned a corner now?
"Yeah, I think George has got a bond with Phoebe that he doesn't have with anyone else. He's best friends with Maddie, Tilly and the gang, but they'll never understand what him and Phoebe went through together.

"I think Phoebe is starting to live her own life a bit more now as well, but I think they'll definitely always be friends to the end!"

Hollyoaks sixth former George Smith is left heartbroken next week as Ste Hay rejects him following a one-night stand.

The surprising storyline begins when a well-meaning George offers comfort to Ste (Kieron Richardson) following Brendan Brady's dramatic departure, but with both in a vulnerable state, they end up in bed together.

While George sees the encounter as the start of a proper relationship, he's in for a nasty surprise when Ste is adamant that it meant nothing. Struggling with the rejection, will George be able to cope?

Digital Spy recently caught up with Steven Roberts, who plays George, to hear how the story plays out.

Were you surprised when you heard about the George and Ste storyline?
"I was surprised, and I understand that for some fans this one-night stand between George and Ste might be absolute sacrilege! But I'd almost ask that the fans look past however 'wrong' or 'random' this seems, and look at it more as a catalyst for what's to come for both characters.

"For Ste, it's very much the beginning of a downward spiral. For George, it's an awakening to men and to his sexual identity, which he's never really had before."

Were you told about the storyline quite far in advance?
"Not really. At any one time, we're about six weeks ahead of transmission and it wasn't something that was talked about much beforehand. I just read it in the scripts and found out that way! I had heard some murmurs beforehand, but you hear a lot of murmurs on set and you never know what's actually going to come to fruition."

Is George quite vulnerable in these scenes?
"Well, I think George has always struggled with having a sexual identity. He's always just been a good friend to everyone else - trying to cheer people up and be there for other people. However, his romances have always been a bit doomed. With Ryan in Abersoch last year, it was never really meant to be, as George was quite scared by it all.

"George has also been through the sexual trafficking experience with Deena, so there are negative connotations for him when it comes to having a sexual identity. This is why George has built it up as such a massive thing to lose his virginity. When Ste doesn't want to know the next day, it's all the more heartbreaking for him."

The story starts with George finding a drunken Ste outside the pub and helping him home. Does George have any idea of what's going to happen next at that point?
"Definitely not. What's happened is that Phoebe has stolen a bottle of wine from The Dog, and George has had a few swigs of that. He's not drunk but he's a little bit tipsy.

"George then sees Ste and notices that he looks very lonely and upset. With the person George is, there's nothing predatory or devious about it at all - he just thinks to get him home. Then at the flat, Ste offers George a couple of drinks. The beer goggles are on, one thing leads to another and Ste leans in to kiss George…"

After they've slept together, does George see this as the start of something?
"Yes, George is very much taken away by this whirlwind romance. He's finally lost his virginity - which is a big thing for a lot of teenagers, as you want it to be special. George just assumes that it was special, but when Ste doesn't want to know, the whole experience becomes tainted for George."

Does Ste let George down gently?
"Well, first of all, Ste makes George feel quite unwelcome the next morning. George doesn't really think anything of it, though. He goes back home to the Kanes' and tells them that he's met someone, although he doesn't say who. George is very excited about it, so Martha encourages him to get back out there and claim his man, in typical Martha style!

"George goes back to the deli, but Ste is quite embarrassed to see him again because Doug is there. In the end, it leads to George being chucked out of the deli into the village!"

What happens next?
"The whole week is a whirlwind and it makes George re-address everything. He's even unsure of whether he wants to carry on studying fashion, as his whole world has been turned upside down. Something that he thought was so special has been ruined. He's done it now - he can't go back and he can't change it."

Later in the week, Phoebe finds out how George has been treated - but assumes John Paul is the guy in question and vengefully mugs him! How does George react?
"I think George feels quite bad for John Paul! He feels awful when John Paul is brought into the frame, because it had nothing to do with him."

You haven't really had any scenes with Kieron before. What was he like to work with?
"Kieron's great. He's a lovely guy and very professional, so I loved working with him."

Would you like George to find a guy he can be happy with?
"I think it'd be nice to see him happy. George had a lot of upset last year and lately we've seen a chirpier side to him. Whether he can be happy, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see!"

Our readers seem to like it when the Deena situation is brought up again, as we saw with Phoebe and Mercedes recently. Would you like that to keep cropping up?
"Definitely, as it's a big part of George and Phoebe's background and it's what makes them so strong as a unit. It will always be a big part of them and if it gets revisited again then that'd be great.

"George and Phoebe are really good for each other and they bring out different sides of each other, too. Whereas George encourages Phoebe to be part of the gang, Phoebe calms him down and roots him in reality a lot of the time. They've got a good balance between them."

Is it strange to have lost some of your on-screen colleagues with the dramatic exits of Maddie, Neil and Jono last year?
"It's certainly different, but I think the show is changing in quite a few ways. It's great how it's going back to family units, and I also like how we're seeing characters crossing paths within the small village.

"Obviously Ste and George is one that a lot of people didn't expect, and the interactions won't all be like that - everyone won't start suddenly jumping into bed with each other! But it's nice to see different characters interacting and the dynamics that brings."

How did you feel about the Esther bullying storyline and George's role within that?
"I thought the storyline itself panned out great. George didn't have much to do with the storyline at first, because it was crucial to show the actual bullying. If George had been there, he probably would have stepped in a lot earlier, so he was off doing his studies and wasn't so involved.

"I would have been disappointed if George had joined in the bullying. I don't think we can say he did that, but sometimes people can be guilty of letting things slip by. George, and all of the characters to an extent, were guilty of that.

"I was glad to see George come in at the end and show support for Esther, but in some ways it was too little, too late. But that's where the drama came from and it would have been wrong to have George and Phoebe there throughout.

"Also, some of their bullying was quite underhand, conniving and tactical. The bullies would put on a different face when George was around - particularly Maddie. George never saw through Maddie's façade until the very end. I think that's because George does see the best in people and he doesn't like confrontation."

Would you like the sixth formers to somehow find out about Maddie leaving Neil to die in the bus crash?
"I don't really know how that would come out, but in a way I think it's nice for the viewers to have things that they know but the characters don't. But if it ever did come out, it'd probably be quite explosive!"

The development came after Phoebe McQueen finally decided to be honest with George regarding Vincent's reasons for returning, following an attempt to keep them apart.

After George chased the bus Vincent was on, George revealed that he wanted Vincent to head back to London with him, and the pair were reunited.

Discussing his show exit, Roberts said: "As I hang up my multi-coloured, furry, patterned ensemble for the last time I'd just like to thank the whole Hollyoaks team and viewers at home for all their support during my time on the show."

He added: "I've been lucky enough to be part of some great storylines during my time here and, to coin George's favourite word, the past three years have been 'fabulous'. Thank you."

George was first introduced in 2011, when he became embroiled in a homeless storyline with Phoebe.

Hollyoaks fans who watch the show at Channel 4 pace will see Vincent depart at 6.30pm tomorrow (September 18).

I enjoyed his storyline with Phoebe when Phoebe was first introduced. Since then I have found him boring and pointless. His storyline with Vincent just didn't have any spark.
