Eugene's playing peacemaker with Kinga and Orlaith after a little tension grew over smoking in the Secret Garden.
Kinga sat on the floor and lit up the cigarette Makosi gave her earlier this morning, while Orlaith, who's nursing a sore throat, lay in bed. Orlaith asked Kinga to smoke in the toilet and she duly obliged, leaving Orlaith to gripe to Eugene.
"I don't want to be passive smoking in here," she told him.
Eugene trod the middle ground. "It would be much better to do it outside. I'm not too bothered as it's only one cigarette, but I can fully appreciate your standpoint."
"She's going to want more," insisted Orlaith, however Eugene pointed out that she didn't have any more.
When Kinga returned from the smoking toilet she said, "I just needed to calm down. I feel really bad if I upset you guys. I'm sorry."
Eugene was again diplomatic. "We're all doing things that can upset each other one way or another," he said. "Me lying down when perhaps I should be up..." was probably not the best example.
Orlaith, either under the weather or just grumpy, told them they needed to be quieter. Eugene amused himself by putting wineglasses over his eyes, then held cans on his head and said, "I am an alien. Ning, ning, ning."
"Shhh," said Orlaith.
Where are the silent non-smoking aliens when you need them?
