View Full Version : St. Ella to Quit Corrie
CORRIE star Michelle Collins is quitting as Rovers landlady Stella Price — to spend more time with her teenage daughter. There is a God
Ex-EastEnder Michelle, 51, is fed up with having to commute from London to Manchester for filming. probably does not understand the language
The Cockney actress, who joined in April last year, has just been given a new 12-month contract — even though fans criticised her dodgy northern accent. Its Still Crap!!
But Michelle — who played Albert Square superbitch Cindy Beale — says daughter Maia Rose, 15, comes first.
She said: “I will be in the show until this time next year but I think she would sue me after that. Go now Michelle your daughter needs you
“My daughter has her GCSEs next year. I want to be around to support her so I’ll have to take time out. Take about 30 years
“I find it really difficult working in Manchester and then coming back to London to be a mum. I don’t want to unsettle Maia.”
Michelle had looked set for a long run in the ITV soap, and her departure will be a big blow. To who exactly ???????
Sue Johnston — from comedy The Royle Family — has even been signed to play Stella’s mum Gloria.
A source said: “We hoped she would be talked about in the same breath as Annie Walker, Bet Lynch and Liz McDonald. It doesn’t look like that will happen now.” it was never going to happen
Stella’s storylines have included her being revealed as Leanne Barlow’s mum. As well as becoming everyones friend and Patron Saint

I predicted this would happen. I`m not buying that ' I want to spend time with my daughter' rubbish either. Michelle probably can`t stand the pace, or she`s bored.
:(
If the Corrie bosses had chosen Lisa Maxwell to play Stella in the first place, none of this would have happened. There are some cracking storylines coming up (Stellas Mum), and now it seems that all those plans were for nowt.
I know Michelle isn`t leaving til next year, but it still puts a damper on future storylines.
Michelle Collins could have been such an iconic part of Corrie history, but now that looks very unlikely. What a shame.
:(
I realy do not hink that Lisa Maxwell would have been suitable to play the landlady of the Rovers. It needs a believable character , someone ho has a reason for being there/ Its only a back street boozer so th producers should keep that in mind when selecting S.Ellas replacement. It does not need someone glamourous, Lisa Maxwelll was ok in the Bill but not great

Bring back Raquel
They need to bring in someone who has a valid reason for being there unlike the preposterous reason they used to bring in the ridiculous St. Ella. Pubs are being closed on a daily basis so it's more likely T'rovers would be bought by someone who had some actual connection with the area rather than a long lost mother yawn fest. An ideal storyline would involve the death of At.Ella and Traceyluv
Coronation Street star Michelle Collins has insisted that there is no truth in rumours that she is quitting the soap.
Earlier today, reports suggested that Collins is bowing out from her role as Rovers Return boss Stella Price next year as she wants to spend more time with her teenage daughter Maia Rose.
However, in an official statement, Collins insisted: "I am very happy working on Coronation Street and have no plans to leave the show.
"I have recently signed a new contract for another 12 months and have not said I'm planning to leave the show after that time. I'm really enjoying playing Stella and have made some firm friends on the cast.
"There are a lot of exciting storylines in the pipeline for Stella, including the recent casting of Sue Johnston as her mum, and I'm relishing the chance to be part of such an amazing show."
Coronation Street bosses announced Johnston's casting last month and viewers will see her arrive on the cobbles in June.
Stella is also currently being cheated on by her troubled partner Karl Munro (John Michie), who has struggled with a gambling addiction in recent months.
Trust someone to pee on my parade. Maybe my celebrations have been premature but I'm confident she will soon go. The Sun spoilers are generally fairly accurate in relation to the soaps

I believe she will go soon and she will use her daughter as a smoke screen, but the truth is Corrie made a huge mistake hiring Michelle. Forget the terrible attempt at the accent, bottom line is Michelle isn't that great an actress. If the Corrie bosses wanted a character with a Northern Accent they could have hired a Northern actress, but I don't think they did. I think she has just tried to do a Northern accent and failed miserably For all the years Michelle has appeared on tv programmes and went to drama school her acting is pretty poor and is easily out shined but some of the Corrie cast. Time will tell over the coming months whether she is involved in any major storylines or is she just stuck behind the bar at the Rovers every episode she appears in. If it's the later the she is for the boot.
Hmm, so even though the actress herself has said she is there for at least another 12 months you still think the sun spoilers are still correct? interesting........ She is getting her excuse in early or else she fancies a pay rise. Remember the equally useless Ms Ford claimed that she was heading back dahn sarf for the sake of her family. She gets a pay rise and stays. Quelle suprise. Michelle Collins will be gone within the year. She has become one of the most unpoular additions to Corrie in recent years

I agree Alan and it's down to her poor acting skills. Michelle would maybe have been more popular if she just stuck to her own accent as Stella and told the street she was originally from London and it wouldn't have been such a fuss as not everyone who lives in Manchester has a Manchester accent. The problem is that Michelle can't cope with the demands of appearing in a soap. As much as i'm not a huge fan of the soaps I commend the cast members who work the long hours to learn basically a new script every day. There is no let up as it's not like working on a movie for three-months. It's a hard slog. Some actors can carry it off some can't. Michelle, Katy Ford, Kym Ryder and many others are just a few who can't cut the mustard in soapland. They needed to be treated like everyone else in the big bad world. Either ship up or ship out.
very well said Kath. They are just brought in whether or not they can act. The fact that Michelle had a Christmas shopping trip to New York with Phil Collinson is pure coincidence. Similarly Ms Fords friendship with Daran Little is also a mere coincidence

exactly Alan There is nothing wrong with soaps bringing in big names for short or long periods as long as they can act. Look at Ian McKellen he was only brought in for a few episodes but he was a blast because he could hold his own. There has been many so-called actors and actresses who have wasted a bloody good opportunity being cast in a soap and not progressed on to better roles because there acting skills have let them down that is why many of them go on to reality shows it's not to boost their profile is to pay their bills as they know they don't have a cat in hell's chance of appearing on TV otherwise and it annoys me that many so-called actors and actresses who appear on British TV programmes think it's their God given right to be given a role in a top show or film even if they can't act for toffee and the Stella storyline is classic of that.

im afraid i have to disagree. imo michelle has settled nicely into weatherfield and if she wants to remain in corrie i can see her being round for a long time. her accent has been a problem, but i dont know if ive got used it or it has improved, but it doesnt bother me anymore, i really don't mind. its odd because i know longer think of her as cindy. Its as though stella has been around the cobbles a long time.
michelle stopping in the street will depend on whether she can put up with all the travelling from manchester to london. i hope she does.
I appreciate your point of view gg but it's not just about Michelle herself. It's the way she has been forced upon us by Phil Collision. She has been a major player in most of the storylines since she came. She arrived on the back of a preposterous story about her long lost daughter Leanne. The bit about her going to Bettys house to go through her effects was just too much.. As an experiment has failed completely. The majority of Corrie fans have given her a fair chance and they/we still hate her. She it's as bad of the plank known as Kate Ford which makes her another Kym Marsh

I'm not all that bothered about the accent. i would have been happy for her just to use her own accent, but I don't just think it's Michelle's acting that's at fault I don't think her, Karl and Eve gel well. You watch other characters not just on the street but in other soaps it's not just how one actress is performing but how they interact with fellow actors. You look at Norris/Mary, Roy/Hayley or even Chas/Aaron over in Emmerdale. They're characters gelled together but I don't get that conection with Stella,Karl & Eve. Even John McChie is annoying me and I've watched him for years in Taggart. He looks uncomfortable in Corrie I don't think he is enjoying his role. As for Eve she always looks fed up, no wonder as she basically they're as Nick's bit of stuff. i know a lot of members on here are fans of Michelle from her days on EE but I don't think the three of them get on and it's reflecting in their performances.
The Rovers Return has always been the focal point of the programme , and needs a well established character to be in control for such a key role imo. For me Michelle has just continued her old character out of Eastenders same old, same old . Just not interesting enough ,no sparkle, boring. I don't think better scripts would have made any difference, she had that in Eastenders didn't make any difference there.
You have hit the nail on the head Glen. People think she is wonderful because she was on deadenders.. She is way out of her depth on Britains favourite soap She is not capable of being a pub landlady which in most soaps is a central character. She may well have slotted in as a girlfriend for some established character. Anyone who thinks she is a star in Corrie is as disillusioned as the Mann who took her Christmas shopping to new York
The fact she is added in to every storyline is what really irks me now

The bit about her going to Bettys house to go through her effects was just too much..
Wasn't it just so ridiculous? When my 18yo daughter and I were watching that episode, we both, in unison, shouted out "Why's SHE going?" She'd known Betty all of five minutes and was definitely not someone who should have been there. I was probably getting into the story a bit too much (I reckon I'm allowed after having watched Corrie for over 40 years) but it almost felt like sacrilege to have someone who barely knew Betty to be there going through her stuff. She had no right to be there and we were incredulous.

I wish I could! Yet another in the line of non-stories to which we have been subjected!!
Sorry Jakes_stuff Michelle deserves critisism and some others actors ,not just on Corrie imo. The shows are televised on primetime TV , so should be top quality. For too long "soaps " seem to have become an excuse for poor acting and puerile storylines
The actors are very well rewarded , so we should expect the best particularly from lead performers imo. I get the impression that some seem more interested in promoting there celeb status or whingng instead of focusing on the programme. Maybe a spell in
the real world would be beneficial to a few of 'em , not an original idea I know many have said it on these forums . Maybe quality might improve long term ratings not "flash in the pan" anti-climax explosions ,crashes and the old favourite a FIRE.
Finally if I see another character fall 30 foot onto a concrete roof ,get up and run away I shall SCREAM !!!!!!

I don't know this actress from earlier shows she acted in, but I do agree that they are trying, not very successfully, to insert her into everyone's life. There was a little tension while she was trying to get back into Leanne's life. Now all is forgotten and they are the best of pals, not at all realistic. I wonder why the writers just decided to end that whole dinamic. There is absolutely no chemistry between Stella and Karl and even less between Karl and Sunita I agree that some actors just don't come across well on screen. But then I don't understand why they decided Steve should suddenly sell out and move into the shadows. I certainly liked him in the Rovers better than Stella. Actors can only say the lines that are written for them, the real people to blame are the writers, as has been pointed out repeatedly in this forum.
Shalagee worth reading some of Alan's posts re. Stella ( Michelle Collins). might explain Stella's sudden rise to fame in Corrie. The same writers produce scripts for other actors on the show and they seem to get first class delivery but for Michelle and one or two other actors it's in the second rate section imo

Alan's posts are well worded, precise, humorous, and to the point. I fail to see how his signature is filled with negativity, and he is FAR from hypocritical. These forums are about "discussions" and "opinions" Alan participates in both with decorum and etiquette (not to mention the wet my pants comments he adds to the spoilers) I understand that an "opinion" is what you have about Alan but, the opinions on this forum are about TV shows, not members.
Talk about over reacting - where did I say your, sorry, (!) 'signature' offended me? - I merely pointed out that I seem to see many a post with your 'signature' on where you've just finished slagging off an actor - seems to be a bit hypocritical ending a post that's filled with negativity to an individual about how important it is to be nice ? :o)
And as for your claim that the 'vast majority of 'real' corrie fans do not like her' as demonstratated on the forums? So every single corrie fans post on the forums do they? Corrie must regularly pull in about 6 or 7 million viewers? Are ALL those viewers on the corrie forums slagging off Michelle Collins? Or is it a tiny percentage of that number, a thousand, a couple of thousand at a push? Lets have a bit of common sense applied shall we?
Or are you saying you have to post on the Corrie forums to be considered a REAL Corrie fan?
I hope you like my new signature
Obviously not all Corrie fans post on forums. What I actually said was that the majority of Corrie fans who post on the forums do not like St Ella the character. What you are saying is that the majority of fans like St Ella because the do not post on the forums.
Of course you do not have to post on the forums the be a real Corrie fan.

there 'is' rules?? not very good grammar there? Not very effective when trying to tell someone off if you can't even be grammatically correct!
And, there is EVERY need to critisise other peoples signatures if it makes them a hypocrite - so a opinion os ok if they are making unfounded, personal comments against an actor is it? Again, seems VERY hypocritical!

There are laws that can deal with this sort of pre pubescent behaviour on the Internet and with jake ip address and ISP he/she will be easy for the authorities to trace. Sadly because he/she is in care it will have to be his/ her social worker that has the problems.

I sincerely hope NB reports this sad little twit to his ISP and the legal authorities. I have many disagreements on this board with people over my view but none of them resort to such ignorant, disgusting or offensive posts. We argue, disagree but at the end of the day we still remain friends even if we have opposing views. Jakes stuff was a troll who seemed to have a personal vendetta against me because of his/her fantasy relationship with St. Ella. People agreed with some of his replies which was fair enough until the abuse started and then we saw the true nature of soapboards where we can agree to disagree. I just want to thank everyone for their support and look forward to resuming our normal friendly arguments later.

I really think there are worse people in the soap than Stella, take Karl for instance, and NIck, talk about bad casting, only thing wrong with Stella was her script if they had give her a decent script, viewers would have forgive her foibles, but as she's had such a week part, how can viewers "warm" to her.
Her accent is not that bad, and i know lots of people who were born and bred in an area but don't necessarily have the local accent!

Her accent is not that bad, and i know lots of people who were born and bred in an area but don't necessarily have the local accent! Believe it or not, my ear just doesn't hear the diiference in how she speaks compared to the other cast members. I just don't feel any connection to the character and don't really care what happens to her. I've watched soaps all my life and the part that I like is that the characters draw us in and make us care about them, for good or bad. The Stella character is dull, when she's on I just want that part to be over. The Karl stoyline is annoying but I still want to see what happens to him. I keep thinkng that they will give Nick something interesting to do, so far that hasn't happened.
It's not her accent that is my problem. They could have made her a Southener for all I care. It's the ridiculous prominence she has in every storyline coupled with the daft premise that she was forced upon us by being Leeannes long lost and never before mentioned birth mother who apparently had known all about her for years and waited until Steve just happened to be looking for a manager for T'rovers. How many times has the rovers changed hands in Leeannes lifetime. Unfortunately Michelle Collins is not up to the part which is a major role and sadly well beyond her limited ability

I agree mostly with what alan says above. The only thing I'm not so sure about is that Michelle Collins couldn't handle a major role. I used to really like her as Cindy and think if she had a decent role she could handle it ok. But the character she has been given to play and the storylines and dialogue she has been involved in have given her absolutely no chance for us to judge one way or the other. That's my two pennorth anyway.
Thats my point. As a character she was growing on me, the accent was not really noticable any more then there was talk of bringing in her mother which i thought was great, she had some good scenes with Leanne and then since then shes been in EVERY story! and on screen ALL the time! if she had chance to just focus on her own storylines then i think she would be a lot better.

I must be missing something, and being a Northerner myself. I've heard far worse fake accents than hers to be quite honest.
She needs a decent story line of her own, not being dumped in everyone elses.

Yes Michelle can act and besides EE has been very good in Sunburn and Rock Rivals
I think if Ella had been introduced on her own without Karl and Eva and they built up slowly the storyline with her as Leanne's real mother with the reveal not done so fast it would have been better imo
The damage has been done to the St. Ella character now. IMHO there is no way back. The producers made a pigs ear of the character. Michelle Collins may have been good in EE but she was not the correct person to take over the Rovers. The sooner they get shot of her and Karl along with Eva Emptyhead the better. It was an experiment which backfired on everyone concerned.

Michelle Collins has said that she almost quit Coronation Street after being widely criticised for her Northern accent in the soap.
Collins, who joined the Weatherfield serial as feisty Rovers landlady Stella Price in June 2011, drew negative comments from viewers after her debut for not apparently sounding Mancunian enough in her role.
It was reported at the time that Coronation Street cast and crew were angry over Collins's appointment as a result, suggesting that the soap's credibility would be damaged, although Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) later took to Twitter to deny the rumours.
Talking to The Sun, Collins has now revealed that she considered resigning from Corrie after the backlash from press and the public, saying: "Having been a jobbing actor for so long, I'd forgotten the attention you get when you're in a soap. It was a real shock when the press criticised my accent, because I'd 'done Northern' before and never been criticised for it.
"I did get to the point where I said to people high up, 'Should I just resign? I've had enough. I can't do this'. But they said no, absolutely not. They told me to fight it and get through it. So I did."
However, the 50-year-old said that she still cannot bear to see herself in Coronation Street, adding: "The enormity of the criticism made me too scared to watch Corrie on the telly. I still can't."
Collins had said earlier this year that she wants to stay on the soap "for a long time", and that Corrie fans now like her accent.

Coronation Street star??????? :D Michelle Collins has called for the culling of the British Soap Awards.
The Weatherfield actress, who plays Rovers Return landlady Stella Price, believes that soap actors are looked down upon in the TV industry.
"I don't even like the fact there are soap awards," she told the Daily Express. "There should just be TV awards.
"There's a lot of snobbery in this business, even among actors themselves, but I have no time for that. We're all in the same job, aren't we?"
At this year's Soap Awards, Collins was left angered by a comic turn from Bradley Walsh, which saw the ex-Corrie actor and entertainer mock her accent.
Walsh was jokingly referring to press condemnation of Collins's Manchester accent when she joined the ITV serial last year, which prompted Phil Collinson speaking out in her defence.
Of coping with the criticism, Collins complained: "It seemed every time I turned on the radio or looked at the paper they were going on about my flipping accent. They'd compare me to Anne Hathaway in that movie One Day and her British accent, so at least I was in good company.
"It seemed so unfair, though, because people in Coronation Street have all kinds of different accents. But I think whatever I did I was going to get flak. I've got quite a distinctive voice so I think people were a bit shocked when I changed it.
"But then I remember when Barbara Windsor first went into EastEnders. She had a terrible time. And at least they haven't said I can't act, which would have been worse. I've learned to relax about it.
"But yes, at first it was hard being thrown straight into the Rovers, doing a different accent, playing a very different character. Fortunately everyone in the cast was really nice to me."
The 50-year-old recently claimed that she considered resigning from Coronation Street following the backlash.
she would say that cause she doesn't win..
