Coronation Street has picked up the most soap nominations on the National Television Awards 2013 shortlist.

The Weatherfield drama has secured four nods in total this year, compared to three for EastEnders, three for Hollyoaks and two for Emmerdale.

All four soaps will be competing for the hotly-contested 'Serial Drama' prize, and public voting for this category will remain open throughout the live show.

This year's 'Serial Drama Performance' category features two Coronation Street stars - Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs) and Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) - along with EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) and Hollyoaks favourite Emmett J Scanlan (Brendan Brady).

Meanwhile, the 'Newcomer' nominees are Coronation Street's Natalie Gumede (Kirsty Soames), EastEnders' David Witts (Joey Branning), Emmerdale's Liam Fox (Dan Spencer) and Hollyoaks' Joseph Thompson (Doctor Browning).

The shortlist features the most popular choices from the first stage of voting, which began when the longlist nominees were revealed back in September.

Voting re-opens today (Tuesday, January 8) on the National Television Awards website and closes at midday on Wednesday, January 23.

Last year's ceremony saw Coronation Street win the 'Serial Drama' prize, Weatherfield star Katherine Kelly (Becky McDonald) triumph in the 'Serial Drama Performance' category and EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa (Lauren Branning) take home the 'Most Popular Newcomer' gong.

The National Television Awards 2013 airs live on ITV1 from 8pm on January 23.

The National Television Awards

Wednesday, 23 January 2013, 7:30PM - 10:00PM
Entertainment & Comedy

The 18th National Television Awards will be broadcast live and in peak time from London’s 02 Arena on Wednesday 23rd January 2013. Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the night honours some of the biggest stars of the small screen in the only TV awards ceremony voted for by the public.

Host Dermot O’Leary is planning a show-stopping entrance which is sure to be one to remember and viewers are also minded to look out for Dermot’s most challenging routine to date, accompanied by a very special dancing guest.

This year sees the Great British Bake Off make its National Television Awards shortlist debut in the Factual Entertainment category. It will need to fight off the likes of The Apprentice, Top Gear and Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs to be in with a chance of scooping the prize.

Talent shows rivalry continues and hotting up the competition is first time shortlist nominee, The Voice UK, going up against triple NTA winner The X Factor and fellow contenders Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing On Ice and Britain’s Got Talent.

After making a return to our screens this year, the classic Absolutely Fabulous finds itself facing Benidorm, Mrs Browns Boys and The Big Bang Theory in the Situation Comedy category. Can the old favourites beat the new and take home the silverware?

This year’s awards see the addition of the Documentary Series category, featuring the hugely popular nominees including Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, One Born Every Minute and fascinating natural history shows, Frozen Planet and Planet Earth Live.

The ever popular Serial Drama category is set to be one of the most highly contentious gongs of the evening as the battle of the soaps heats up yet again. Last year’s winner Coronation Street faces stiff competition from EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks to be in with a chance of taking home the coveted prize.

The NTAs very own Dermot O’Leary will once again be trying his luck as he finds himself nominated for the Entertainment Presenter gong. Can Geordie duo Ant and Dec make it twelve years at the top or will fellow nominees Alan Carr and Keith Lemon take their crown?

After a summer of sport, one of the highlights at this year’s ceremony is certain to be the presentation of the Landmark Award in recognition of all involved in the London 2012 Olympic Games. To accompany the presentation will be a video montage of the greatest Olympic moments, hand-picked by the Great British public.

Now in its eighteenth year, the National Television Awards is firmly established as Britain's premier award ceremony whose distinctive feature is that all the winners are chosen by the public in a huge nationwide poll.

Emmerdale star Fiona Wade has called for last-minute support from fans ahead of the National Television Awards.

The actress, who plays Woolpack barmaid Priya Sharma, appeared on Daybreak this morning (January 23) and encouraged votes as she praised the ITV soap's recent form.

Voting for most of the categories closes at midday today, but the 'Serial Drama' category remains open throughout this evening's live NTA show.

Wade commented: "I really hope people vote. I think Emmerdale is really well deserved this year with the live episode, the 40th anniversary, and of course we've got Liam Fox up for 'Best Newcomer'. He's such a great guy and such a great actor. I really hope everyone votes."

The 33-year-old also discussed her own ongoing storyline, which sees Priya caught up in a love triangle with David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) and Alicia Gallagher (Natalie Anderson).

She said: "It's all happening, isn't it? She's a bit of a scarlet woman in the village at the moment and getting the blame for everything.

"I love playing Priya. I'm quite defensive of Priya because I play her, so I sort of justify her in a way. I know the reasons behind things and everything - why she does things. I love playing her, she's great fun to play."

The National Television Awards air live on ITV tonight from 7.30pm.

Alan Halsall has paid tribute to his late co-star Bill Tarmey at the National Television Awards.

Halsall, who picked up the gong for 'Best Serial Drama Performance', told reporters backstage that he was wearing Tarmey's watch on the request of his widow.

"I'm sure he'll be having a fag on me," he said.

Halsall went on to pay tribute to his former co-star, who passed away in November.

"He gave me 15 years of advice," he said. "He guided me literally from the very start of my career on Coronation Street. He was such a huge, huge influence... he was like a second dad on the street, if you like. It was a huge influence.

"He'd be laughing at this right now, he really would. He'd be laughing. He used to say, 'None of that bloody acting!' so he'll be laughing his head off that I've won this tonight."

Halsall also revealed that his win took a while to sink in, saying: "In all honesty, it was just shock.

"My wife kept saying, 'Have you prepared a speech?' and I said no. I was in a strong category and any of the other three would have been deserving of it, so I really didn't hold much hope.

"When they read my name I was more shocked than I was happy... but I'm happy now!"

Halsall recently revealed that he would love to match Tarmey's 31 years on Coronation Street.

EastEnders star David Witts has revealed that he is "truly grateful" for his National Television Award.

The actor triumphed in the 'Best Newcomer' category, beating Emmerdale's Liam Fox, Coronation Street's Natalie Gumede and Hollyoaks' Joseph Thompson.

However, Witts admitted that he didn't know how to answer when reporters backstage asked how it feels to win.

"I'm not entirely sure I can answer that quite yet because I'm still in a bit of a daze," he said. "It's mad, because you know what? I didn't expect to win. I really didn't.

"On my way here with my girlfriend, she said, 'You really should make a list of some people to thank', and I was like, 'Oh, really?' I did and then this happened, but it's just crazy."

Witts confessed that he was "very nervous" about attending the awards but added: "It's an amazing experience and I'm truly grateful for this."

The actor, who joked that he would celebrate with a single G&T as he had to work the next morning, also said he had a good run leading up to the awards.

"I think I've been very lucky - a lot of it is luck," said Witts. "I got gifted with a wonderful storyline and leading up to these awards for the past four or five months now, I've been really busy, and it's been a really busy character.

"I think it's a lot down to that... I've been able to showcase an awful lot, whereas some people aren't necessarily that lucky."

Witts also admitted that it is nice to be honoured for his acting skills rather than his looks, saying: "It is obviously lovely to be recognised for [working], because it's easy to lose perspective and start to forget what you came into it for. Actually, I started this because I did an audition, not because I'm standing smiling.

"I mean, [being called sexy is] very flattering... It's a very odd term to use, I think, 'sexy'. I've never used the word 'sexy' to describe anyone else."

Earlier this month, Witts hinted that he is not looking to stay on EastEnders on a long-term basis.
