Emmerdale star Charlotte Bellamy has admitted that her character Laurel Thomas cannot see a future for her marriage when she discovers husband Ashley's dark secret.

Laurel receives a terrible shock next week when she witnesses Ashley (John Middleton) hitting his father Sandy (Freddie Jones), bringing the show's elder abuse storyline to a dramatic climax.

Viewers will see that Laurel decides to stick around in the family home for the time being for Sandy's sake. However, Bellamy told All About Soap that there may be no hope for her relationship with Ashley.

Bellamy explained: "Ashley claims he just wanted life to be perfect for Laurel. He blames her for falling in love with Marlon, even though they didn't have a full-blown affair. Ashley can't forgive Laurel for what she's done, and now Laurel realises she isn't able to forgive him either.

"Laurel doesn't know how to get past this, or if she'll ever be able to forgive Ashley for what he's done. Ashley tells her that he's done all this to protect her. However, as far as Laurel is concerned, their marriage is now over. There is no going back this time."

She continued: "Laurel is going to ask Ashley for a divorce. There's no way she can stay married to him now she knows what he's been doing to his father."

Emmerdale fans see Laurel discover the truth next Thursday (April 26) on ITV1.

Coming up on Emmerdale, Ashley Thomas is forced to face the consequences of his actions as the police arrest him for assaulting his father Sandy.

As reported a few days ago, Ashley's guilt will soon be revealed when Laurel witnesses him hitting Sandy, bringing the soap's elder abuse storyline to a dramatic climax.

In the aftermath of the shocking incident, Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) sticks around at the family home for Sandy's sake - but she makes it clear to Ashley (John Middleton) that she can see no future for their marriage.

To Ashley's horror, news of his shame also starts to spread around the village as Rachel, Edna and Diane all find out what has happened. Ashley still holds out hope of getting his life back on track, but Edna tells him that it's wrong to make everyone hide his guilt.

Taking the advice on board, Ashley pays a visit to the pub, announcing to everyone that he's done something terrible and they all need to know. Ashley then openly admits to hitting Sandy (Freddie Jones).

Laurel continues to show no pity for Ashley following his public confession, making it clear that their marriage is over. Later, just when it seems like things can't get any worse for Ashley, Edna (Shirley Stelfox) decides to report him to the police.

Edna goes to Mulberry to explain what she's done, before the police arrive to investigate. Sandy tries to protect his son by denying everything, but when Ashley arrives home and finds the police there, he promises to cooperate fully. As he's arrested on suspicion of assault, will Ashley lose everything?

Why would she? Now's her chance to get out from under. Wonder if she'll be knocking on Marlon's door??

Also, the public confession is cringey, yikes:o

If Ashley admits it all whilst co-operating fully, Sandy may not have a choice?

Monday

Zak is preoccupied as he fixes some fencing, and becomes irked when he thinks that Lisa is hassling him. At the factory, Ali is back at work and apologises to Lisa, but she is distracted as she is worrying about Zak.

Back home, Lisa is devastated when she questions Zak and he doesn't deny that his cancer might have come back. He tells Lisa that he hasn't been feeling right for a while and he feels terrible as she tries to stay strong for him.

Meanwhile, Megan seems distracted and Declan is worried about his sister, but she avoids the issue. Soon afterwards, in the café, Carl is surprised when Megan flirts and invites him up to Home Farm. Katie and Declan are about to have lunch when Megan and Carl join them. Megan downs the wine and is antagonistic, spoiling for a fight when Carl talks about Kelly and Elliot.

Declan tries to rein Megan in, but she continues and simmers with rage when Carl leaves. Later, Megan is defensive and it's clear that she's grieving over giving up her son.

Elsewhere, Laurel doesn't want to leave Sandy alone with Ashley, Cameron warily agrees to do some shifts at The Woolpack, while Jai gives Ali some leaflets about literacy classes.

Tuesday

Laurel remains wary of Ashley, not wanting him around the kids or Sandy. Ashley takes the hint to leave as Laurel heads out, promising Sandy that she won't be long. Ashley goes to the café to work, but Edna arrives and is in no mood to talk to him. Laurel is awkward as she tells Bob that Sandy is unwell, and Rachel is suspicious when she overhears the conversation.

Rachel visits Sandy and when she sees his bruise, she accuses Laurel of covering things up. However, Sandy wants Rachel to go. At the church, Edna sees Ashley and says that she can't forgive or forget what he's done. Back at Mulberry, Laurel tells Ashley about Rachel coming round and he is wracked with guilt as Laurel can't take much more of the lying.

Meanwhile, Megan insists to Declan that she isn't interested in finding her son, despite her recent upset over the situation. Megan says that she doesn't want to rake over the past, but later Declan is on his laptop looking up private detectives as Katie arrives. Katie is shocked when he explains that he's looking for his nephew. She thinks he should leave the decision up to Megan, but Declan has no intention of dropping it.

Elsewhere, Chas enjoys having Cameron around behind the bar and the pair secretly fall into a passionate embrace in the kitchen, Ali deliberately misses her literacy class but tells her family that it went well, while Lisa looks for the number of Zak's consultant and tells him that she's made him an appointment, leaving him wracked with guilt.

Wednesday

Laurel struggles to cope as she tells Ashley that they need to start acting normally to stop people talking, but she explains that she still can't leave him alone with his dad. The pair try to put on a united front as they go to the pub, but Rachel watches them have a heated exchange and realises that Laurel doesn't want Sandy to be left alone with his son. Ashley fumes at her accusations as Rachel tells a shocked Diane what has been going on. Diane is furious and leads Rachel into the back, but a tearful Laurel finally admits to Diane that Rachel is telling the truth.

Later, Laurel arrives home and tells a horrified Ashley that Diane knows the truth. Laurel is aghast that Ashley is concerned about his career and thinks he should be putting things right for the family. Ashley pleads with Laurel for forgiveness, but is devastated when she tells him that she feels pressured and doesn't even know how to love him anymore.

Meanwhile, Ali covers when Jai asks her how the class went. Soon afterwards, however, Ruby is shocked when a tearful Ali admits that she didn't go. They go home to find Dan playing video games, and when he flirts with Ali, she threatens to stop his access to the kids. Dan is hurt and tells Ali that she needs him, but is gutted when he realises that Ruby and Sean know about her secret of not being able to read.

Elsewhere, Megan invites Carl to the pub as she feels bad about what happened the other night, Declan is shocked to discover that Robbie previously wrote to Megan and she ignored him, Lisa tells Zak that he needs to get ready for his appointment and he feels guilty over what he's putting Lisa through, while the chemistry sizzles between Chas and Cameron and their feelings take over as they kiss passionately.

Thursday

Diane is shocked to see Sandy's injury, and Laurel knows Diane is right when she insists that they can't make it go away themselves and the situation has to be dealt with properly. Later, Ashley is dressed for church but is worried about who'll be there. He reminds Laurel that he forgave her when she did something wrong, but Sandy snaps and Ashley is aghast at his dad's tone. Sandy voices months of pent-up rage at Ashley, and both are shocked by his outburst.

Sandy tells Ashley to go and Laurel is concerned as Sandy sits down, exhausted. He is resolute after his outburst and Laurel knows they've crossed a line - there's no going back. At church, Ashley tries to talk to Edna and she is struck by his helplessness as he pleads with her. However, Ashley is devastated by Edna's ultimatum when she tells him that it's wrong to make everyone hide his shame.

Meanwhile, Ruby has a packed lunch for Ali to take to her class. Ali insists she will go, but has her fingers crossed behind her back. Later, after school, Sean is furious when Kieron and his mates insult Ali about her literacy class, and a worried Belle watches on. Back at home, Ruby and Rachel are pleased that Ali enjoyed her class. Ruby gives Sean a box of cakes for helping his mum, but is surprised by his angry attitude.

Elsewhere, Megan warns Declan not to meddle in her business, Brenda gets a text from Pollard wanting to talk but Gennie thinks she should ignore him, while Priya and Rishi arrive to stay with Jai and Nikhil as they've been arguing with Georgia.

Ashley arrives at the pub, announcing to everyone that he's done something terrible and they all need to know. Ashley then openly admits to hitting Sandy. Nicola takes Gabby out and heads off to warn Laurel about what Ashley is doing. Soon afterwards, back at the cottage, Ashley is devastated as he tries to talk to Gabby and sees that she's scared of him after what she heard in the pub. However, Laurel has no pity and asks Ashley to leave.

At the pub, everyone is talking about Ashley and Sandy, although Edna thinks they shouldn't be gossiping. Later, Laurel finds Ashley at the church and finally tells him that it's over.

Meanwhile, Brenda arrives at the B&B after having her hair and make-up done. However, she is mortified when Amy implies that Pollard is messing her around. Later, Bob finds Brenda crying and she tells him that Amy has made her feel like an idiot. Brenda gets drunk on wine with Bob and tells him all about her and Pollard's relationship. Bob is polite but eventually tells her that it's time she went.

Elsewhere, Nikhil asks Gennie if he can stay over as he is already sick of Rishi and Priya, Cameron struggles with his guilt over Chas and suggests a night out to Debbie, Priya complains about the pressure from her mum to have a baby, while Jai admits that he might want a kid of his own.

Friday

Ashley has spent the night in the church but receives some support from Rodney, who offers to cook him breakfast. Soon afterwards, Laurel returns to work and is dismayed to discover that everyone knows about her and Marlon following Ashley's announcement. Marlon visits her at work to see if she's okay and they both blame themselves for the situation. However, Laurel doesn't want him near her and he leaves.

Later, Edna decides to report Ashley to the police. Edna goes to Mulberry to explain what she's done, as the police arrive to investigate an alleged assault. However, Sandy denies it and glares at Edna. Ashley heads home, but freezes when he sees the police car. The police are about to leave when Ashley enters, explaining that he will cooperate fully and Sandy is distraught. Ashley pleads for Sandy's forgiveness as he's arrested on suspicion of assault.

Meanwhile, the Dingles celebrate the garage completion, but Chas decides not to go as Cameron will be there. At the re-opening, Cameron feels guilty as Debbie says how lucky she is to have him. Later, at the pub, Chas apologises to Debbie over her no-show and blanks Cameron. He is rocked when Chas tells him that it's over between them.

Elsewhere, Brenda accepts Pollard's apology as he tells her that he wants to announce officially that they are a couple.
