Coming up in Emmerdale, more sad times lie ahead for Sandy Thomas as he's left injured following another argument with his son Ashley.

Ashley (John Middleton) loses control later this month after Sandy has another mishap while looking after Gabby at the house.

At first, things seem to go well as Sandy (Freddie Jones) and Gabby enjoy themselves painting festive Easter eggs. However, forgetful Sandy later leaves a tap running and soon the kitchen is awash with water.

Sandy tries to clean up the colourful mess, but Laurel returns home to a scene of chaos and rushes back out to buy some cleaning products.

As Sandy is left with short-tempered Ashley, he's fearful of his reaction - and he's right to be worried as the village vicar is furious over the mess.

Eager to help, Sandy makes a grab for the mop, but Ashley pushes him away. Sandy slips in the fracas and hurts his wrist, but will he tell Laurel what has happened or keep quiet about his injury?

MONDAY

Adam is unnerved to see a fire investigation vehicle parked up at the garage. Soon afterwards, Aaron finds Adam and is shocked to see that he's in a bad state with a bottle of vodka. Aaron encourages Adam to face his fears, promising that he'll help him through it. Eventually, Adam returns home and Moira does her best to reassure him that everything's going to be okay.

At the same time, Ed is shocked about the garage fire and tells Aaron about a mechanics job all ready for him in France if he wants it. Paddy thinks this is an amazing opportunity and tries to get Aaron excited about it, but Aaron is preoccupied as he worries about Adam. Later, Ed's gutted when Aaron tells him that he can't move to France because it's not fair to leave Adam.

Meanwhile, Laurel asks Sandy to nip to the shop for her, but Sandy covers as he tells her that he's mislaid his keys. Ashley offers to help him look for them, feeling guilty about confiscating them from him. On getting home from work, Laurel finds that Gabby is unwell and is relieved that Ashley is able to look after her tomorrow. Ashley is shocked and shamed when Sandy tries to return his keys to his safekeeping.

Elsewhere, Lisa reaches the end of her tether as she impulsively pours Zak's beer down the sink, while Ruby gives Ali some paperwork on divorces but is disappointed when she doesn't look at them.

TUESDAY

Ashley is forced to leave Sandy at home looking after Gabby while he visits a parishioner. Sandy and Gabby enjoy themselves painting festive Easter eggs, until Sandy absent-mindedly leaves a tap running. Soon the kitchen is awash with water and Sandy tries to clean up the mess. Laurel is frustrated when she returns home and sees the colourful mess and leaves again to get the correct cleaning products. As a result, Sandy is left with Ashley - fearful of his reaction.

Ashley is furious with Sandy over the mess and pushes Sandy when he makes a grab for the mop. Sandy slips in the fracas and hurts his wrist. Ashley is gutted to realise that Gabby has seen the whole thing. Ashley struggles to hide his shame and anger, but insists to Gabby that Sandy's fall was an accident. With Laurel out of earshot, Ashley is cold with Sandy - telling him that Gabby will back up his story. Sandy is left shaken and upset.

Meanwhile, Chas and Paddy are thrown when Aaron tells them that he's not going to France with Ed. Chas is worried when Aaron tells her that it's because of Adam, and she tries to talk sense into him. Paddy also tries to intervene, but Aaron is adamant that he's staying for his friend.

Elsewhere, Ruby is annoyed that Ali has got no further with the divorce, Lisa asks Chas to stop serving Zak alcohol in the pub, while Nicola tells Laurel that she needs a new plan to seduce Jimmy.

WEDNESDAY

As Sandy offers to help with the household chores, Laurel sees the terrible bruising on his wrist and suggests that he should go to hospital. Ashley is quick to offer to take him. Rachel witnesses Ashley trying to bundle Sandy into the car and voices her concerns to Ruby, who tells her to stop interfering.

At the hospital, Ashley is anxious as Doctor Hargreaves questions how Sandy bruised his wrist, asking why Ashley didn't bring him in earlier. As the doctor takes Sandy for x-ray, Ashley is told to stay behind. Sandy assures Ashley that he didn't say anything, so Ashley unconvincingly suggests that they should put it behind them and start afresh.

Meanwhile, Zak sits depressed on the roadside talking to himself, unaware of Megan pulling up in her car. Zak refuses the offer of a lift, and Megan senses that something is not right. Later, Zak is furious when he's refused a pint at the pub, sweeping drinks off the bar in a fury. Diane is forced to bar Zak from the pub. When Lisa hears about this, she gives him an ultimatum - he needs to change or he's out.

Elsewhere, Chas reckons that Ed can persuade Aaron to go to France, Alex plays along as Nicola flirts with him to make Jimmy jealous, while Turner helps Sean with his war project.

THIURSDAY

Sandy is taken aback when Gabby regurgitates what Ashley said to her about his fall being an accident. Edna later visits Sandy and is concerned about his injury. Ashley suggests they should leave his dad to get some rest, but Sandy is enjoying the company and wants Edna to stay.

That afternoon, Ashley struggles to hide his fear and utter horror when Anna Jennings from Adult Services calls round, wanting to check on Sandy and asking to speak to him alone. Ashley wonders who made the call, but Anna is unable to give out that information. An angry Laurel tells him that it must have been Rachel who made the call, so she heads out to confront her.

Meanwhile, Zak is keen to make amends, so he apologises to Belle and Lisa - promising to sort himself out. Zak visits Home Farm to ask for work, and is pleased when Megan says that she'll sort it with Declan. However, all the effort is too much for Zak when he heads to Seth's hide and breaks down sobbing.

Elsewhere, Jimmy tells Nicola that he's sick of her games and it's over, Moira is worried about Adam, while Turner is pleased when Sean begins to show interest in his stories about the war.

Ashley doesn't want Laurel to say anything to Rachel, but she can't help herself and goes looking for her. Ashley then sits at home feeling anxious, wondering whether it was Sandy who called social services. He feels guilty as he tries to convince himself and Sandy that he's done nothing wrong.

Later, Laurel arrives at the pub to see Rachel and questions her about calling social services. Diane and Marlon are shocked to discover that Rachel believes Ashley is abusing Sandy. Diane immediately tells Rachel to leave and Laurel is grateful for the support.

Meanwhile, Aaron postpones his drink with Ed to stay with Adam. When Aaron eventually arrives at the pub to meet Ed, it's too late. Ed leaves, explaining that as he only has one week left, he doesn't want to spend it just talking about Adam or being messed around. Aaron's left devastated.

Elsewhere, Nicola realises that Jimmy is playing a game with her, Zak promises to rein in his drinking but is struggling to keep up the pretence, while Hannah tells Holly that she's got an offer from Glasgow University but is worried about leaving the family.

FRIDAY

Ashley is worried when he realises that Sandy is not at home, but Laurel reassures him that Diane has just taken him for a drive. At the same time, Rachel is frustrated as she telephones social services and they can't tell her anything about their visit to Sandy yesterday.

Later, Ashley slightly opens up to Jude, explaining how he always seems to be frustrated with Sandy. However, Ashley knows he could easily give away too much and closes down the conversation. Soon afterwards, Ashley is relieved but left still feeling guilty when Laurel receives a call from social services, who confirm they have no concerns about Sandy.

Meanwhile, Aaron tries to hide his concern when Debbie reveals that the investigators think the fire was started deliberately. Debbie is suspicious and grills Cain over who could have started it. Aaron can see that Cain is already losing patience with protecting Adam. Later, Adam braces himself when he discovers that the fire investigators know it was arson. Holly and Moira are terrified for his future when he says that he will have to own up…

Elsewhere, Carl can't believe that Nicola is getting her own way when Jimmy announces that he is booked in at the clinic for a vasectomy, while Nikhil thinks that David and Alicia should get together.

Emmerdale's Freddie Jones has revealed his character Sandy Thomas will refuse help when he suffers abuse at the hands of his son Ashley.
Ashley, played by John Middleton, is feeling depressed and frustrated following the breakdown of his marriage to Laurel, and so he begins to take out his anger on the frail pensioner, who he is meant to be caring for.
When an argument between the pair ends up with Sandy injuring his wrist, friend Rachel, played by Gemma Oaten, wants to call social services. But Sandy is in denial that his own son would hurt him.
Freddie told Inside Soap: "Sandy agrees with Rachel's suggestions that Ashley isn't treating him properly.
"But he gets cross when they talk about it, as he feels defensive of his son and loves him.
"He regards Rachel as an ally and a friend - but he fears her interference is only going to make things much worse for him in the long run."
Gary FitzGerald from charity Action On Elder Abuse praised Emmerdale for highlighting the issue which is not often talked about.
He said: "Sandy must deal with the pain of what his son has done, and Ashley needs to deal with what he's done and how he sees himself as a result.
"That's not something anyone can do casually - but help is available."

This whole Ed thing with Aaron was no romance just a fling I guess. The Emmerdale writers messed up big time.

I dont buy Ed and Aaron as a couple - there isnt a spark there for me? so it does come across as just a fling?

would you up sticks and move abroad for a fling...? probably not if things were 'ok' where you are?

I guess Aaron telling Ed no to moving to France is realistic the writers needed more time to develop a relationship. But Danny Miller wanted to leave so they kind of rushed the so called relationship.

agreed - but Danny did say ages ago that he wanted to leave, so the writers should have been more forward thinking, and....

does he go or does he end up banged up for arson??!

Emmerdale star John Middleton has said that his character Ashley Thomas regards dad Sandy as a threat to the future of his marriage.

The pair are currently at the centre of an elder abuse storyline which has seen Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten) express fears that Ashley is mistreating Sandy (Freddie Jones).

Ashley's angry behaviour comes as he continues to struggle with the fact that his wife Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) fell in love with Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) last year.

Middleton told itv.com: "Tensions have flared to the surface recently because of what's happened between Laurel and Marlon. The thing that is deeply hurtful about that is he knows they fell in love, and Ashley's been knocked for six by that.

"Ashley's been trying to make the Thomas household perfect," he continued. "You can't do that, but nevertheless that's what he's trying to do, because he wants the relationship between himself and Laurel to get back on an even keel.

"He wants to provide, he wants to protect, but he mainly wants Laurel to stay. Any threat to that at all is a threat to his marriage, and that's how he's beginning to regard Sandy.

"He's wrong, and it leads him to do things that are very unprovoked, dangerous and cruel. But he's been driven to it by the pressures that he feels."

Ashley fears that his reputation could be destroyed next week when social services become involved in the situation. Although the authorities later report that they have no concerns about Sandy, how long that stays the case remains to be seen.

Middleton added: "For it all to be shattered now would be devastating - goodness knows what would happen to Ashley. It's going to be really interesting to find out. We're going to see some big changes."

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.

Emmerdale vicar Ashley Thomas fears the worst as social services check on Sandy in tonight's (March 29) double bill of the soap.

Ashley (John Middleton) is left stunned as representative Anna Jennings pays a visit to the house unexpectedly, explaining that they're responding to a call made by someone who has concerns over Sandy's welfare.

Sandy (Freddie Jones) is then interviewed by Anna in private, answering questions about his mobility, his recent problems and the care he's receiving from Ashley and Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy).

During the discussion, Sandy maintains that there's nothing wrong whatsoever - but will Anna be convinced?

Emmerdale airs tonight at 7pm and 8pm on ITV1.
