Davy Jones, the British-born lead singer of 1960s pop group The Monkees, has died aged 66.

Jones, who was the main teen idol in the former pop quartet, died at a hospital in Florida.

Medical officials did not comment on the cause of his death.

The Monkees had several hits, including Last Train to Clarksville and I'm A Believer, and sold millions of records.

Jones and his cohorts - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork - were put together to star in their self-titled TV show between 1966 and 1968.

He had an early start in showbusiness as Ena Sharples' grandson in Coronation Street.

Its unbelieveable. Davy Jones was one of those people who never seemed to age. He seemed to retain his boyish looks

Yes Peter Tork and Mickey Dolenz are still touring. Mike Nesmith has become a bit of a recluse
