Home and Away's Ruby Buckton faced a heartbreaking decision as the soap returned to screens in Australia today (Monday).

Back in November, the show's 2011 season finale episode left Ruby's mother Charlie in a critical condition after she was shot twice by vengeful Jake Pirovic (Fletcher Humphrys).

Following weeks of speculation over the character's future, today's 2012 premiere saw Charlie rushed to hospital after she was found by her loved ones.

When Charlie's lover Brax (Steve Peacocke) discovered who was responsible for her injuries, he raced off for a dramatic showdown with villainous Jake.

However, Ruby stayed at the hospital and there was heartache in store for the student after Charlie returned from emergency surgery.

Local doctor Sid Walker (Robert Mammone) was forced to break the news to Ruby that Charlie was only being kept alive by a ventilator and, as there was nothing more that medics could do, she would never breathe on her own again.

As Charlie's next of kin, Ruby was then left with the decision over whether her life support should be turned off - which later plunged Brax into turmoil as he was determined not to give up on his girlfriend.

The drama will continue to play out in tomorrow's episode as Ruby was unable to make a decision straight away.

At the weekend, Esther Anderson - who plays Charlie - confirmed her departure from the soap. However, details of the character's final scenes have always been kept tightly under wraps.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 7pm on Network Seven in Australia and weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 in the UK.

Home and Away character Charlie Buckton has died in the latest episode to air in Australia.

Charlie passed away in hospital after her daughter Ruby (Rebecca Breeds) and lover Brax (Steve Peacocke) agreed that her ventilator should be turned off as there was nothing more that doctors could do for her.

The former police officer had been shot by vengeful Jake Pirovic (Fletcher Humphrys) in the soap's 2011 season finale, but firm details of her exit scenes had been kept under wraps until transmission.

Following advice from doctors, Ruby realised that it was time to let Charlie go as she was only being kept alive by a machine.

Bad boy Brax initially struggled to accept the teenager's decision, holing himself up in Charlie's hospital room with a gun so that she couldn't be taken away from him.

However, following some wise words from his younger brother Casey (Lincoln Younes), Brax finally saw sense and sat with Ruby as Charlie's life support was turned off.

Fans in Australia will see Charlie's funeral in the next episode to air on Network Seven.

Esther Anderson, who played the role of Charlie, filmed her final Home and Away scenes last August and is now hoping to secure work in LA.

Monday episode 5436 - 23/01/12

When Brax, Ruby, and Casey discover Charlie unconscious after being shot, they quickly get her to hospital. Leah is told about Charlie, and rushes home to aid the police with the investigation, where she learns that they suspect Jake. Accidentally mentioning this in front of Brax, he goes off to look for him. When Brax finds Jake still lurking around Leah’s house, he chases him straight into the arms of the Police.

Meanwhile, at the Hospital, Sid informs Ruby that Charlie can’t breathe on her own, and as her next of kin, Ruby needs to decide when to turn off her life support machine. Brax pleads with Ruby to reconsider, but Ruby’s struggles to make the right decision.

Sid is released from prison after attacking Stu, but is warned that he is not allowed to go anywhere near him. At the hospital, Sid is confronted by Alan, Stu’s dad, who threatens him to stay away from his son.

Tuesday episode 5437 - 24/01/12

Alan is hostile and has a physical confrontation with Sid, that puts Sid’s job at the hospital in jeopardy. In the meantime, Roo struggles to see past Sid’s violent outburst towards Stu, and questions whether or not she can be with him.

Indi returns from the city still upset that Romeo gave all their savings to his sister Mink. She urges him to get a job at the Resort.

Ruby is still struggling to decide whether to turn off Charlie’s life support. She seeks guidance from Sid, and finally decides that Charlie wouldn’t want to be kept alive by machines. Fraught with grief, Brax can’t accept the fact that Charlie has gone, and he barricades himself in her hospital room, threatening staff with his gun. Casey is the only one who manages to persuade Brax to let Charlie go. He surrenders his weapon and Ruby and Brax embrace, united in their grief.

Wednesday episode 5438 - 25/01/12

At Charlie’s funeral, Ruby delivers a moving eulogy. Brax doesn’t show up, and Liam and Bianca find him getting hammered at Angelo’s. He ignores their pleas to attend the funeral. Later, he shows up at Charlie’s wake drunk and offensive. Ruby blames him for Charlie’s death, and asks him to leave. Casey explains to Ruby that he is worried about Brax, and can’t leave him to go to the city anymore.

While picking up more sandwiches for Charlie’s wake from the Diner, Sasha and Xavier are confronted by a group of boys that have seen the erotic photo of Sasha. They begin to hassle her, and Xavier comes to her defence. They share a moment for the first time.

Thursday episode 5439 - 26/01/12

April and Xavier become friends again after April’s embarrassment from her behaviour at the Formal. As they catch up, Xavier reveals that he intends to join the Police Force. April sees Heath for the first time after sleeping with him, and asks him what is happening between them. Heath explains that it was a one time thing, leaving April upset.

Bianca and Liam have an engagement party Angelo’s. Heath is working and obviously uncomfortable with the display Liam and Bianca are putting on. He goes to meet April on the beach and things get physical before a shocked Bianca angrily confronts them.

Friday episode 5440 - 27/01/12

Bianca is astounded to learn that April slept with Heath. Liam wonders why this bothers Bianca so much and wonders if she is jealous. Liam lets slip to Heath that it was April’s first time; Heath is shocked and deliberately gives April the brush off in an attempt to extricate himself from the situation. April is crushed.

Dex sees April and Heath in a passionate embrace, and is heartbroken. He goes to see Dallas at the Surf Club, and asks her to sleep with him. She is angry with his forwardness and explains that she knows that sleeping with her wouldn’t make him feel any better about April and Heath. She convinces Dex to go to April to try and be friends.

Irene is feeling better after her close call with cancer and decides to enjoy the sunshine and go sailing. However, she collapses, and is left alone and adrift at sea...
