Once popular TV quiz show Blockbusters is to make a comeback - shortly after the death of its original host Bob Holness.
The programme was a teatime ITV hit throughout the 1980s as three contestants battled it out, two against one, to reach the "Gold Run" section.

Now a 40-episode series of the programme is to be screened by Challenge TV in the next few months, although this time it will be aimed at grown-ups rather than school-age teenagers.

The BSkyB-owned station has already been repeating archive editions of the show.

Original questionmaster Holness died on January 6 at the age of 83. He died in his sleep but had suffered a series of strokes and had been living in a nursing home.

In the show contestants choose an initial letter from an illuminated board and are challenged to come up with the correct word.
It became known for teenage competitors asking teasingly: "Can I have a P please Bob?"
No presenter has yet been announced for the new series.

Programme maker talkbackTHAMES has begun advertising for contestants, asking for over-18s to take part. The production company's advert says it is looking for "outgoing people with good general knowledge and bags of enthusiasm".
The format was briefly revived on Sky1 more than a decade ago with Liza Tarbuck as host, and it has also been screened by the BBC for one series with Michael Aspel taking Holness's role.

Simon Mayo has signed up to host Challenge's upcoming revival of the classic gameshow Blockbusters.

News of the show's return to television emerged last month, shortly after the death of original host Bob Holness.

Mayo has now landed the job of host.

The Radio 2 presenter claimed that he only agreed to the role because the "spirit of the show will be exactly the same".

"No-one needs to worry," he said. "It will be exactly the same - same set, same board, the same theme tune, although slightly updated. The prizes will probably be the same too, although you don't win a dictionary, you win an e-reader."

Mayo also revealed that the gam show will feature contestants of all ages rather than solely students and revealed that "there is a lot of talk about a celebrity edition".

"It is a feel-good programme," he said. "It would be nice to do Bob proud."

Blockbusters is expected to return to Challenge in the spring.

Blockbusters host Simon Mayo has said that he hopes to make a show that Bob Holness would have been "proud" of.

The classic game show is being rebooted next week on Challenge with the BBC Radio 2 DJ as its new host.

The revival, consisting of 40 new episodes, was officially announced in January, shortly after the death of original host Holness, aged 83.

"We want to do a show that Bob would have been proud of," Mayo told BBC Breakfast. "Everyone feels warm towards it because of what Bob did to it. We wanted to make a classic format that Bob would have liked. Hopefully people will think it's nice to see it back."

The DJ said that contestants still delight in saying the show's infamous catchphrase "Can I have a 'P' please?".

"It's one of those things that in every single show, if someone asks [that question], it gets a round of applause and laughter. They're itching to say it," he revealed.

The presenter also explained that the new series will feature contestants of all ages, commenting: "If you limit yourself to just schoolchildren and sixth-formers it also limits the questions. We still have sixth-formers but we have everyone."

The show has previously had incarnations featuring presenters Michael Aspel, Liza Tarbuck and Vernon Kay.

Blockbusters will begin on Monday, May 14 on Challenge.
