Black Sabbath announced that they are to reunite for a new album and world tour.

The rock band held a news conference in Los Angeles to reveal their plans to perform at the Download Festival in England in June 2012 followed by a global tour.

The LP - to be produced by Rick Rubin - will be the band's first new studio album in 33 years.

The news was also confirmed on the band's official Twitter and a special announcement video taking a look back at the band's music career.

Last month, lead singer Ozzy Osbourne said that there was a "strong possibility" that the band would reunite.

"It's in the very early stages, so we haven't recorded anything yet. If it works out, it'll work out. If it doesn't, I'll keep doing my thing," Osbourne said.

The band's guitarist Tony Iommi had said that he is willing to work with Osbourne again for a new album.
