View Full Version : Milton
Coronation Street bosses have announced that Hollywood actor Robert Vaughn is joining the cast of the soap for a guest stint.
The 78-year-old has signed up for the role of Milton, a wealthy American man who Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) meets while she is away on a cruise.
When Sylvia returns to Weatherfield following her holiday, she starts boasting about how she met Milton - who arrives in the area himself shortly afterwards.
Milton will appear on screen for a short stint early next year and he quickly causes a stir among some of the local residents, itv.com has confirmed.
Vaughn is best known for his roles as Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Harry Rule in The Protectors and Albert Stroller in Hustle. He also portrayed Lee in '60s film The Magnificent Seven.
Sylvia - mum of café owner Roy Cropper (David Neilson) - was introduced to Coronation Street viewers in April.

Lol, brilliant. I bet he's not really rich and has spun her a line...or am I too close to Hustle there?
The latest in celebrity casting to hit the cobbles comes from ITV.com who reveal today that veteran actor, Robert Vaughn, is to appear in Coronation Street.
You know that cruise that Sylvia has won? Seems she's going to meet a gentleman called Milton on the cruise and he arrives in Weatherfield to find her. According to ITV this will set the "cat among the pigeons". We've not heard if actor Stephanie Cole is leaving or if her tenure at the cafe was only temporary so we don't know if this leads to her departure or if she'll be embroiled in a romantic entanglement.
What we would like to see is Dennis Tanner finding himself suddenly jealous over the attentions paid to Sylvia. We've noticed a few little sparks of friendship between them even though Dennis is living with Rita and they've become quite comfortable companions. Is it more than that? I'm sure Dennis is fond of Reet but perhaps he'll realise Syl is more his type.
Any storyline with the veteran actors is great in our books and We'd much rather see an actor like Vaughn getting a cameo than one of the many tabloid celebs that say they want to be in Corrie just so they can get their name in the papers.
Coronation Street's cast and crew are believed to be thrilled following the news that Hollywood actor Robert Vaughn is joining the soap for a guest stint.
Yesterday, it was announced that Vaughn - best known for roles in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Protectors and Hustle - has signed up for the guest part of Milton, a wealthy American man who arrives in Weatherfield after meeting Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) on a cruise.
In a new statement released today, Coronation Street's producer Phil Collinson commented: "I am delighted to be welcoming The Man From U.N.C.L.E to Coronation Street. Robert was a huge part of my childhood and a magnificent actor.
"I am looking forward to seeing the impact this exotic character has on the ladies of Weatherfield."
Will Thorp, who is due to bow out on screen as Chris Gray later this year, also discussed the news during an appearance on Lorraine today.
Thorp said: "It's incredible. I was reading this last night. It's amazing the people that go into Corrie. When you think about it, we had Ian McKellen a few years ago and Robert Vaughn now. A big old-school American actor."
Meanwhile, a Coronation Street insider told the Daily Express: "This has given the whole cast a massive boost in the lead-up to Christmas. Robert has spent many years working in the UK and is well aware of the show, its history and its popularity with the British public."
Vaughn's short stint on Coronation Street will air in early 2012.

The*Mirror reports today that the actor has been given Betty Driver's old dressing room, which they say is*one of the best in the studio with neighbours including veterans Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Bill Roache (Ken Barlow).
Betty's dressing room*was locked up after her death at 91 in October after almost 50 years in the show. Now it’s had a spruce-up. A Street source said: “It’s an honour to get Betty’s room – she is still sorely missed. And what a fitting person to be first in. They don’t come much more famous than Robert Vaughn.”

Coronation Street adds a touch of Hollywood to the cobbles next week as Robert Vaughn's three-week guest stint playing wealthy American Milton begins.
Having met Sylvia (Stephanie Cole) on a cruise late last year, Milton decides to surprise her with an unannounced visit - appearing at The Rovers just as the outspoken café worker is about to compete against Norris in their music contest.
As Sylvia spends more time with Milton, her feelings for him become ever stronger - leaving viewers to wonder whether she's about to be tempted away from Weatherfield.
Digital Spy recently caught up with Robert to hear all about the role of Milton and what's to come. Read on to find out what he had to say.
How did your role in Coronation Street come about?
"It came as a sudden call out of the blue. I had no idea that it was in the pipeline and I'd never seen Coronation Street before, but I had heard of the show. At first, the dates didn't seem to work because I was doing a film in London called The Magnificent Eleven, about a low-end soccer team. But then the producers of The Magnificent Eleven and Coronation Street worked out the schedules so that I could do both."
How did you feel about being asked to do the show?
"Well, they didn't show me any scripts, but they did tell me the story - and I thought it was interesting. And I don't get to play nice guys very often, which is what I'm doing here. Milton is a wealthy man who has met Sylvia on a cruise, and they've become enamoured with each other."
What can you tell us about Milton's arrival on the street?
"What happens in the story is that Milton surprises Sylvia, as she has no idea that he's coming over to the UK. At the time, she's involved in a music contest at The Rovers, where there's a prize for the best act. And suddenly Milton joins her on the podium and when she's playing the banjo, he joins in with some singing!"
How do things proceed from there?
"Well, as Milton and Sylvia start to spend more time together in Weatherfield, they realise that their feelings for each other have become even stronger. So Sylvia then has to make a decision over whether she wants to go back with Milton to Palm Springs, or whether she wants to stay with her son Roy in Weatherfield. That's the big plotline which runs through."
What is it about Sylvia that attracts Milton so much?
"Well, you meet people on cruises and you get thrown together - it's spending a very intense seven or twelve days being with the same person all the time. In doing that, Milton and Sylvia became attracted to each other - and that's how it all happened."
We know Sylvia as quite an outspoken character. Does she show a different side to her personality around Milton?
"She carries on speaking her mind! In fact, there's one line where Sylvia says, 'I just have one thing to say' and Milton replies with, 'Well, that'll be a change!'"
How do the residents of Weatherfield react to Milton's arrival?
"They're a little bit apprehensive, because they can't understand how Sylvia is considering leaving Weatherfield to be with Milton after such a short space of time. So some of the locals are watching Milton with a bit of an evil eye, to see what kind of a character he is! But Milton is just a successful businessman who's no longer married, as his wife has died. So that's his story!"
How does Milton feel about life in Weatherfield?
"He's quite charmed by it, because he likes life in England and spending time in pubs. He's charmed by the pubs, the restaurants and the people there. He's also fascinated by Roy, because Roy is such an individual and he's obsessed with words. Roy is so precise with what he says, and Milton finds that very interesting. And Roy gets to like Milton over time, too."
Milton also comes up with some ideas for Roy's café, doesn't he?
"Yes, Milton wants to knock out the wall between the butcher shop and Roy's café, and turn it into a big chain called Beef Encounter! Milton thinks that it'll be bigger than McDonald's - he's a visionary, like Richard Branson or Donald Trump. Milton always thinks on a very big scale - he wants to prove that he can transform something small into something that will be successful on an international scale. But that can be slightly intimidating for people who live in quite a small town."
How does life at Coronation Street compare to life on a movie set?
"Everything is a lot smaller, but the small sets fit in with the nature of the show - Coronation Street is set in a small town. I think it's a very charming show, and I understand that it's been on for all these years because people get very strongly attached to soap operas."
How did the Coronation Street cast react to your arrival?
"Whenever I appear on any show, there'll always be a couple of people who'll ask about The Magnificent Seven, Bullet, The Towering Inferno and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - those questions will inevitably come up no matter where I work in the world, and that applies at Coronation Street too! But they've been very friendly about everything."
Have you enjoyed working with Stephanie Cole?
"She's a very formidable woman! She knows what she wants and how to articulate it. She's very charming, funny and raucous - all the things that people love about her as an actress. Incidentally, my wife is a great fan of a show she did called Waiting For God. She told me, 'Oh, you'll love working with her - she's just wonderful'."
How familiar were you with Coronation Street before you joined?
"Oh, I've heard the name for 50 years. One night about ten years ago, I remember presenting an award to the show. I don't remember much about the specifics, but I remember they announced it as 'the legendary Robert Vaughn presenting an award to the legendary Coronation Street'!"
What memories will you take away from your time at the show?
"I'm sure that I'll remember how kind everyone has been to me - they've all gone out of their way to make me feel at home."
Would you come back to Coronation Street in the future?
"I'd be delighted! I've had a great time."

Robert Vaughn has said he would "happily" return to Coronation Street.
The US actor, who made his name in the original The Man from UNCLE series, appeared on the Weatherfield-based soap in 2012 as Milton Fanshaw, a wealthy American who befriended Roy Cropper's (David Neilson) mother Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) on an international cruise.
Vaughn told the Daily Express he originally took the role at the behest of his wife, Linda Staab.
He said: "Through living here with me during Hustle she's got to know the shows and she said, 'This is the biggest thing on British TV. You have to do it'."
The 80-year-old actor added: "It was a wonderful experience and I would happily go back."
Vaughn's three-week guest stint ended after Sylvia developed feelings for him but rejected an offer to start a life together.
Cole confirmed her departure from the soap in August. She will exit as part of Hayley Cropper's (Julie Hesmondhalgh) cancer storyline.
Does that mean she will be back for a short while???
