EastEnders' Max Branning returns to Walford later this month - just as life for his family seems to be spiralling out of control.

While Tanya (Jo Joyner) is behaving erratically after deciding to stop her cancer treatment, Abi and Lauren are running wild - leaving Cora, Jack and Carol wondering what on earth has gone wrong in the family.

Just as Tanya finally decides to tackle Abi's rebellious antics, she receives a shock when Cora hands her a pregnancy test that she has found in Abi's bag.

When Tanya confronts Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald), there's a further surprise as Max (Jake Wood) arrives back unexpectedly - and he's not happy to see that life for the Brannings has descended into chaos in his absence…

An EastEnders insider commented: "Tanya is shocked when she sees the pregnancy test and it makes matters worse when Max arrives back. Abi tries to explain that the pregnancy test is Lola's, but will they believe her?"

Tanya continues to struggle with her current situation, and the pressure increases when Carol turns up wanting to talk to her. Carol tells Tanya that she's concerned about Lauren's recent behaviour, especially how they were both drinking so much during the recent night out at The Vic. When Tanya dismisses her fears, Carol begins to suspect that something else is wrong.

At the same time, Rainie winds up Shirley at the café, telling her that she knows about Phil's stalker. This leaves Shirley wondering whether Rainie could be the mystery culprit. After heading to Tanya's house, Shirley is menacing as she threatens Rainie, but Tanya takes control of the situation by kicking Shirley out. However, Tanya's eventful day doesn't end there as Yusef then turns up for a word in private - he wants to know why she hasn't attended any chemotherapy or radiotherapy appointments for the past three weeks…

Meanwhile, Lola manages to get one over on the Moons with a scheme to make some cash. Billy notes how clever Lola is and encourages her to get back to school as she has recently been missing lessons. He claims that she can make something of herself if she starts attending classes again. Lola promises to get her act together, but it soon becomes clear that she's hiding a secret when she pulls a pregnancy test from her bag while out of Billy's sight.

Elsewhere, Kat confides in Kim, explaining that Alfie doesn't want her to tell him if she's ever unfaithful again, while Dot is shocked when she learns that Rose has a man in her room - who turns out to be Patrick.

Tanya's erratic behaviour continues as she starts putting up Christmas decorations and refuses to attend an emergency appointment that Yusef has made for her. Cora realises that something is wrong, but Tanya insists that she's fine and everyone should stop worrying about her. Later, a troubled Abi heads to the café, where Carol is looking after Amy for Jack. When Carol has to pop out for a short while, she asks Abi to keep an eye on the youngster. Roxy soon enters and convinces Abi to let her sit with Amy, but Jack is furious when he arrives back and sees them together. He sternly rebukes Abi and warns Roxy that he'll see her in court.

Realising he's been too harsh with Abi, Jack later finds her to apologise and he's alarmed when the teenager tells him just how bad things are at home. Jack goes to see Tanya, but she lashes out at him - sick of everyone interfering. Jack soon tells Carol that he thinks Max should know about the troubles in his family. It turns out that Jack knows exactly where Max is - he's staying with their brother Derek. At the same time, Tanya heads to the hospital and announces that she wants no further contact with them and no more appointments. The doctor warns her that she may not survive another year without treatment, but Tanya stands firm over her decision…

Meanwhile, Lola tells Abi that she is pregnant. Lola soon shares the news with Billy, who is shocked and determined to find out who the father is. Billy thinks that Tyler could be the dad, so he confronts the womaniser. However, Lola steps in - assuring him that Tyler isn't the father. Lola tells Billy that she only needs his support - they can raise the baby themselves.

Elsewhere, Dot has kicked Rose out of the house and refuses to accept her back, while Jean gets a pleasant surprise when she goes to buy a scratch card and wins.

Tanya's family life remains in chaos as Lauren didn't return home last night. Lauren wakes up in a complete stranger's bed and quickly realises that she needs to get back home. Abi, meanwhile, is feeling ignored by Tanya as she talks about a pair of shoes that she really wants. Tanya soon snaps at her daughter, telling her to use her initiative to get the shoes if she wants them so much. However, she later regrets her words when the police bring Abi home for stealing the shoes. Struggling to cope, an angry Tanya storms out to spend some time alone.

When Lauren returns home, Rainie informs her that Tanya has gone out. Lauren assumes that she must be at the hospital so she goes off to find her, but when she arrives there, she discovers that Tanya hasn't been attending her appointments. When Tanya returns home, there is another drama to deal with as Cora has discovered a positive pregnancy test in Abi's bag. Tanya loses her temper once again, turning on her family as she tells them all what she really thinks of them. However, suddenly there's a shock for everyone as Max walks in on the heated scene…

Meanwhile, Billy asks Pat to give Lola some advice on her pregnancy. Pat agrees and explains to Lola that she has options, before suggesting an abortion. However, Lola insists that she is keeping her baby. When Ben asks Lola whether he could be the father, she bluntly rules out the possibility. Jay also makes an attempt to find out who the dad is, but this leaves an angry Abi suspecting that Jay is the father.

Elsewhere, Dot has discovered that Rose's passport has a different name on it. When the two sisters talk, Rose admits the truth about her name change.

As Max tries to find out what has been going on in the family, Abi explains that the positive pregnancy test is Lola's. Shortly afterwards, Derek Branning enters the house and his domineering presence is immediately felt, but he soon leaves to see Jack, giving Max some time alone with his family. When Lauren returns home following her visit to the hospital, she demands to know why her mother has been lying to her, but a desperate Tanya slaps her - not wanting the truth to be revealed in front of everyone. Tanya then pushes Max out of the house.

Suddenly, Lauren makes the shock decision to tell the rest of the family what's really going on - Tanya has cancer and is refusing to have treatment. Stunned, everyone is keen for Tanya to explain herself. Tanya says that she didn't want her family to go through what she went through when her father was ill. Cora can't understand this as she doesn't believe he suffered much, but she receives a shock when Tanya reveals the truth.

Meanwhile, Derek heads over to see Pat and enters her house even though she's made it clear that he's not welcome. Carol isn't pleased to see Derek either, and warns him to keep out of her life. Derek has some news for his sister as he explains that he and Max are heading to Manchester together. This leaves Carol concerned over what the pair have been up to recently.

Later, Tanya rushes upstairs at home and locks herself in the bathroom, pulling tablets out of the cupboard. As everyone worries about her, Cora realises that they need Max's help. Just as Max is about to drive out of the Square, Lauren runs out in front of his car and begs him to help - informing him of Tanya's illness. Will Max agree to stay and help Tanya?

I'm guessing that Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) is not there to play Santa at the Community Centre - he's got a face to scare your kids and curdle your milk!

EastEnders star Jo Joyner has said that fans of the soap are divided over whether her character Tanya Jessop should reunite with ex-husband Max.

Tanya ended an affair with Max back in the summer after she suffered a health scare. Since then, she has been battling cervical cancer with only her daughter Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) aware of what she is going through.

However, Max (Jake Wood) returns to Albert Square later this week and is keen to support Tanya when he hears about her condition.

Joyner told TV Times of the storyline: "Tanya and Max's relationship has always been based on her having to be sexy and attractive, to keep him on his toes. Now she's in a situation where she hasn't got the energy or the ability to be like that, so the terms of their reunion are utterly different.

"Them being back together is like Marmite. Some people hate the idea, others love it."

The actress said that she is keen to stress the importance of early detection after researching Tanya's illness.

Joyner said: "The thing about cervical cancer is that the earlier it's diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. No woman enjoys having a smear test but undergoing cancer treatment is a lot worse. The NHS provides women with regular smears and that's something we should all make the most of."

EastEnders' big week for the Brannings continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
