Jodie Gold, Poppy Meadow, Norman Simmonds to leave

FANS fed up with all the gloom on EastEnders are to see three of the soap's funniest characters LEAVE.

Ditzy duo Jodie Gold and Poppy Meadow — played by Kylie Babbington and Rachel Bright — are getting the boot along with Pat Evans' old flame Norman Simmonds.

It Ain't Half Hot Mum star George Layton, who plays Norman, is not having his contract renewed.

Meanwhile, attempts by Jodie and Poppy to inject a touch of TOWIE-style humour into the BBC1 soap appear to have flopped.

Jodie was brought in as the daughter of Zoe Lucker's character Vanessa Gold.

She had a relationship with car lot worker Darren Miller until he ditched her on their wedding day. Jodie and pal Poppy make their final appearances next month — with Jodie leaving to look for Darren.

EastEnders double act Jodie Gold and Poppy Meadow are to bow out from the show, Digital Spy can confirm.

The ditzy pair, played by Kylie Babbington and Rachel Bright, will be seen making their departures from Walford in an episode which airs next month.

Jodie has been appearing on screen since summer 2010 and her departure comes as Babbington's contract reaches its natural conclusion.

Poppy, meanwhile, made her debut in January and viewers have since seen her appear in a handful of episodes as Jodie's best friend.

It has also been confirmed that Norman Simmonds's departure from Albert Square in this Thursday's episode will be George Layton's final scenes in the role of Pat's love interest. So soon :eek:

An EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy this morning: "Since the departure of her mum and boyfriend Darren, it was felt the character of Jodie had come to a natural end and viewers will see her head off to look for Darren.

"Like Norman, Poppy had always been a supporting character, not a regular, however we may well see her return again in the future."

EastEnders continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.

EastEnders fans will see Poppy Meadow arrive back for another stint in Walford next month, Digital Spy can confirm.

Poppy, played by Rachel Bright, returns to Albert Square to help with the preparations for Janine Butcher's wedding.

Online fans have been speculating about a return for Poppy for some time after Bright hinted at the news on her Twitter page.

An EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy today (May 18): "As a returning character, Poppy - played by Rachel Bright - will be back in Walford next month.

"Poppy is drafted in by Tanya to help prepare Janine for her big day. But now working as a successful nail artist, who knows how long she'll stay?"

Supporting character Poppy appeared in a number of episodes last year as the best friend of Jodie Gold (Kylie Babbington).

She was last seen on screen in November.
