Katy Perry has confirmed that The One That Got Away will be the sixth cut from her Teenage Dream album, and will be officially released later this year.

1 of 1 Katy Perry: looking to break Jacko's record This follows five US chart-topping releases from Perry's second LP, matching Michael Jackson's chart record set by his Thriller album in 1987-1988.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained," EMI's EVP Greg Thompson said to Billboard. "If it goes to number one, that would be great. If not, we still have a Katy song on the radio in fourth quarter."

A 'touch up' of the song will be released to radio by its original producer Dr Luke, while the label is said to be reading treatments for the accompanying music video.

Teenage Dream topped the US and UK charts last August, where it has sold 1.8 million copies in the States alone and remained in the top 40 since its release.

Katy Perry has explained why she chose 'The One That Got Away' as her new single.

Perry said that she will release the song as the sixth single from her Teenage Dream album because she thinks it has universal appeal.

"I'm so pleased to select 'The One That Got Away' as my sixth single because this song shows a very different side of me that I haven't shown with my past singles on this record," she said.

"I think that everyone can related to this song. I wrote this song about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through."

Perry added: "It's a bittersweet story - hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had 'The One' get away."

If 'The One That Got Away' tops the US Hot 100, Perry will break a record set by Michael Jackson in 1987-1988 and matched by herself earlier this year.

Her previous five singles from Teenage Dream - 'California Gurls', 'Teenage Dream', 'Firework', 'E.T.' and 'Last Friday Night (TGIF)' - have all hit the top of the US charts.

Perry's label EMI confirmed that the star will be shooting an accompanying music video for the song in the coming days.

It was recently reported that the track will undergo a "touch up" before being released to radio.
