The hugely-anticipated live-action adaptation of legendary stage musical "Les Miserables" has found its Javert, according to Deadline.

It's being reported that Universal has secured Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe for the role of the relentless inspector, which would have him starring opposite fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman as reformed thief Jean Valjean.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has it that both Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush are also in negotiations for the film, though their intended roles haven't been specified (I'll assume Bonham Carter would be taking on Madame Thenardier). In addition, Broadway World earlier reported that Anne Hathaway was set to take on the role of Fantine, though that hasn't yet been confirmed.

The studio also announced they've slated the film for release on December 7, 2012, at the height of next year's Oscar season. Clearly they're looking to garner some Academy Award nominations for the Tom Hooper-directed film and its heavyweight cast for 2013.

Based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, the Cameron Mackintosh-produced "Les Miserables" is now the longest-running stage musical in the world, and the third longest-running play in Broadway history.

With a script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Nicholson ("Gladiator"), the adaptation is being produced by Working Title partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, along with Mackintosh and Debra Hayward. The team has reportedly been working for years to get the project off the ground.

"Les Miserables" will be the next film on Jackman's plate, with the "Wolverine" sequel recently pushed to an estimated summer 2012 start to make room.

Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly close to signing up for a role in Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables.

According to the Daily Mail, the director is keen for Bonham Carter to play Madame Thenardier in his adaptation of the popular musical.

Earlier this weekend, it was confirmed that Russell Crowe had agreed to take on the role of police inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman will play ex-convict Jean Valjean.

Les Misérables is being adapted for the screen by Gladiator screenwriter William Nicholson.

Bonham Carter last worked with Hooper on the Academy Award-winning film The King's Speech.

Les Misérables is expected to begin filming early next year for release in cinemas on December 7, 2012.

Looks fantastic. Samantha Barks got the role of Eponine (and I'm so glad Taylor Swift didn't) and she WILL be brilliant. Have seen the stage show 4 times and look forward very much to seeing the movie. Thanks Tammyy2j for posting the clip.

Sounds like the movie IS every bit as good as we Les Mis fans had hoped! At the Premiere every song was applauded, apparently, and the Daily Mail reviewer - Christopher Tookey- gave it 5 stars (out of 5) and said he'd gladly give it 10! The following is a quote from his review:

" They dreamed a dream, and now it’s come true.
It’s been a long time coming – 27 years since it opened in the theatre in London – but it’s worth the wait. This is a wonderful film, an all-time-great musical, guaranteed – despite its title – to raise your spirits, as well as make you cry.
Superbly directed, brilliantly acted and sung with unprecedented emotional depth, this is a magnificent treat and a tribute to Working Title and Cameron Mackintosh, who produced it.

This isn’t just the most ambitious British film of all time, it’s quite possibly the best."

Russell Crowe is rumoured to be dating his Le Mis co-star Samantha Barks. The singer, who appeared on I'd Do Anything five years ago, has been romantically linked to the Hollywood actor following his split from wife Danielle Spencer in October.

An Australian magazine said that the pair have "a special relationship" and an insider at the Oscars after-party revealed: "She was continually touching his sleeve, giggling and sitting in awe of his every word, and he was lapping up every moment."

Russell also mentioned on Twitter that he was working out with the 22-year-old Brit, saying: "Work out with @samanthabarks 4km walk, 30mins elliptical, 4 min prone hold, shoulder routine, lats, bench, Turkish stand [sic]".

He also complimented her before their Oscars performance, saying: "Last tech rehearsals for the Big O done...next up...showtime..@SamanthaBarks will be looking amazing tonight, worth tuning in just for that."

But Samantha's father, Richard, has denied that there is anything between the pair, saying that they are "simply friends".
