A third instalment in the Bridget Jones's Diary series is officially on the way.

Working Title Films, the production company behind the first two Bridget Jones films, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that it has greenlit a third movie in the franchise.

Colin Firth, who played Mark Darcy in 2001's Bridget Jones's Diary and 2004's Bridget Jones's Diary 2: The Edge of Reason, has also opened up about a potential plot for the third instalment.

"I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can't have children, I think that's the way it goes on," Firth told Access Hollywood. "So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to [Hugh Grant's character] Daniel Cleaver for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she's left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?"

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig was previously being considered to helm the third Bridget Jones's Diary, with the 48-year-old reportedly being "beyond keen" to film a movie in London.

Renee Zellweger agreed to return to the role of Bridget Jones for a third film in March, apparently provided that she does not have to gain any weight.

I just hope it's as good as the first movie and not just a ploy to make cash.

Hugh Grant has yet to decide whether he'll star in the third instalment of the Bridget Jones's Diary film series.

Working Title, the production company behind 2001's Bridget Jones's Diary and 2004's Bridget Jones's Diary 2: The Edge of Reason, announced earlier this week that a new film is in the works.

Renée Zellweger is returning to play the lead role for one final time, but will wear a fat suit instead of gaining weight as she did for the previous films.

Colin Firth is also returning as Mark Darcy, but Hugh Grant has yet sign up to play Daniel Cleaver in the third film, the Sunday Mirror reports.

A Working Title source said: "Everyone is keeping everything crossed that he does. Cleaver is his role and it wouldn't be good if he wasn't in the film."

Firth previously teased a possible plot for the movie, saying: "I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can't have children, I think that's the way it goes on. So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver for long enough to get pregnant."

Film bosses are in talks to hire Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo for the movie - reportedly to be named Bridget Jones's Baby - and are planning to start work on filming as early as the beginning of next year.

It's thought Bridesmaids director Paul Feig had originally been signed up for the role.

But after several drafts of the initial script, it seems film bosses decided a British director would be better suited to the job, and tracked down director of The Full Monty, Peter Cattaneo.

Now it's reportedly full steam ahead for the movie, with filming set to start in January 2012.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the third movie starring Renee had officially been given the go-ahead back in August, with film bosses hoping to start work on the project as soon as possible.

Talk suggested execs could have begun planning the remake back in 2009, but failed to convince the starlet to reprise her role in the hit franchise.

Now the Renee is officially on board, along with Colin Firth, Hugh Grant and the rest of the film’s famous cast.
