Starz has released a full-length teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of Spartacus.

Spartacus: Vengeance will begin in January next year, and sees Australian actor Liam McIntyre take over the series's lead role.

Former star Andy Whitfield was forced to leave the show at the end of the first season after being diagnosed with cancer.

A six-episode miniseries called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena aired earlier this year on Starz to introduce Dustin Clare's character Gannicus.

Executive producer Steven S. DeKnight has described the show's new season as "shocking", and added that fans can expect big things for the series moving forward.

Starz has unveiled the first full trailer for the second season of action series Spartacus: Vengeance .

The trailer features both fresh footage from the new season alongside behind-the-scenes interviews with the show's producers and creators.

Spartacus: Vengeance marks Liam McIntyre's debut on the series after taking over the titular role from previous star Andy Whitfield.

Whitfield was forced to vacate the role in 2010 to receive treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but passed away in September at the age of 39.

A six-episode prequel miniseries called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena aired earlier this year in the interim between the show's first and second seasons.

Spartacus: Vengeance begins on Starz on January 27, 2012.
