Emmerdale bosses have announced that former Shameless star Kelli Hollis and ex-Bad Girls actress Alicya Eyo have joined the cast of the soap.

The pair have landed the roles of village newcomers Ali Spencer and Ruby Haswell, who are due to make their first appearance on screen in the autumn.

Ali is the sister of troublesome Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten), who made her debut last week when she arrived at the Dingles' home for a furious showdown with Sam.

Just as fiery as her outspoken sibling, Ali breaks up with her husband and leaves her flat on the Hotten estate, hoping for a new start in the village with her two children Sean and Amelia, played by 14-year-old Luke Roskell and 7-year-old Daisy Campbell.

However, Ali's life is far from uncomplicated as she has left her husband for Ruby, much to the horror of her tearaway son.

A statement released by the show teased: "Ali is determined to make her new life in Emmerdale with Ruby work, regardless of Sean's reaction and the pleas of her determined ex-husband to give their marriage another go. When faced with the reality of Ali's baggage, does Ruby really feel the same?"

Hollis portrayed the role of Yvonna Karib on Shameless between 2003 and 2009. She also played Tina Crabtree in the 2004 feature film Mischief Night.

Speaking of her casting, she commented: "As a Leeds girl myself, getting a role as a new regular character for Emmerdale in my home town is a dream come true. I'm really excited to be playing Ali."

Eyo, meanwhile, played Denny Blood in Bad Girls from 1999 to 2003 and has also had recent roles in Silent Witness and Waterloo Road.

Of her new part as Ruby, she said: "I'm over the moon and can't wait to get started. Being part of a show that I've grown up watching is amazing and Ruby is going to be a lot of fun to play."

Ali and Ruby will arrive on screen in October and have been tipped to cause a stir with their no-nonsense attitudes.

Emmerdale's series producer Stuart Blackburn said: "Ali and Ruby are down to earth, gritty, funny and likeable and after leaving her husband of 15 years, Ali has a lot riding on making her new life in Emmerdale work."

Who is Eyo playing? She is playing Ruby.

EMMERDALE bosses are adding to their only gay character - by bringing in a lesbian couple.

Shameless star Kelli Hollis and Bad Girls actress Alicya Eyo will play on-screen lovers.

The ITV soap currently has just one gay character, Aaron Livesy, while Coronation Street has five.

Kelli will play Ali - the sister of troublemaker Rachel Breckle - who has left her husband to start a new life with her kids Sean and Amelia.

But soap sources say the children are horrified when Ali reveals she is setting up house with her lover Ruby (Alicya).

Kelli is best known for playing Yvonne Karib in Shameless.

Alicya played Denny Blood in Bad Girls and has appeared in Silent Witness and Waterloo Road.

Kelli said: "Getting a role as a new regular character for Emmerdale is a dream come true."

Alicya, said: "Being part of a show I've grown-up watching is amazing and Ruby is going to be a lot of fun to play."

Series producer Stuart Blackburn said: "Ali and Ruby are down to earth, gritty, funny and likeable and after leaving her husband of 15 years, Ali has a lot riding on making her new life in Emmerdale work."

The pair will arrive on screen in October.

Finally, on Emmerdale, anyone who's been reading about the arrival of Rachel Breckle's family will know that her sister Ali leaves her husband for another woman.

It's now been confirmed that actor Liam Fox will play Ali's estranged partner Dan Spencer, who reportedly arrives in the village in November hoping to make life difficult for Ali and her girlfriend Ruby.

Former Shameless star Kelli Hollis makes her debut in Emmerdale next week, taking on the role of Rachel Breckle's sister Ali Spencer.

Ali moves into Brook Cottage with her children Sean and Amelia, looking for a fresh start having recently left her husband for another woman. However, there's bound to be fireworks ahead in the family as she plans to move her girlfriend Ruby (ex-Bad Girls actress Alicya Eyo) in too - which leaves Sean horrified.

Here, Kelli chats about joining Emmerdale and what viewers can expect from Ali.

How would you describe Ali?
"She's feisty and she will do anything for her kids. She has left her husband for a woman, but she doesn't have any issues about having made that decision. What she is dealing with are the dynamics of the family and how the decision affects the family.

"She just wants to find a way for them all to get on together, including with her sister Rachel. For Ali, everything is about keeping the family together at the moment."

Why has she decided to move to Emmerdale?
"Ali has left her husband of 15 years, who is apparently a good man and a great father, and she met Ruby. She has never been in a relationship with a woman before and she never planned to become a lesbian, but she met Ruby and has fallen in love and this is about a fresh start for all of them.

"There are no doubts in Ali's mind where Ruby is concerned - she didn't take the decision to leave her husband and split up the family lightly. She's fallen in love and she is 100% committed to Ruby. Ruby might occasionally worry this is a phase for Ali or a flash in the pan, but it absolutely isn't.

"They are from a council estate in Hotten but Rachel tells them about the village and Brook Cottage being available. Rachel convinces Ali to take it and start a new life in Emmerdale."

Why have we seen Rachel looking after the children?
"The kids' dad works away a lot because he's a truck driver and I think because it's early days with Ali and Ruby, they've made the decision to be together but don't want Ruby to be too full-on with the kids initially. So the kids have been spending a lot of time with Rachel in the village. I think their plan is to gradually integrate Ruby into the family."

Why hasn't Ali told Sean that they are moving to the village?
"She thinks Sean would do a runner. They are obviously having issues with him already and that would probably be the icing on the cake. If she asks him if he wants to move to the village she knows he'll say no, so why bother asking? She hopes to hold off the grief for a bit longer!

"The anger he's got has been building because not only has his mum left his dad, but she's left him for a woman. So he's probably getting loads of stick off his mates at school and that's why he's bunking off school. He's bound to rebel. He's 14 and he's angry!"

On moving day, Amelia is involved in an accident. Can you talk us through what happens?
"While they are moving furniture in, there is a lot going on and they take their eyes off her. Carl and Cameron are messing about in their cars trying to get at each other, and Amelia steps out into the road as Carl is reversing.

"Luckily, Sam grabs her but she dislocates her shoulder. So Ali reacts by punching Carl in the face. I don't think she is necessarily a violent person but when it comes to her kids, that is what she'll do, whatever it takes to protect them. So we can expect a few more punches, I hope so anyway!"

Do you think Ali will settle in the village, and is it going to be what she's hoping it will be?
"I don't think it's going to be initially. I think for a while she will question whether she has made the right decision, due to Sean's reaction. She knows it's the right decision for herself, but she'll question if it's the right thing for the family. I think Ali will expect a reaction to her and Ruby's relationship in such a small village, but there is no major statement.

"Slowly but surely, everyone sort of twigs that they're a couple so we'll see how that goes. Sean is the only one who's got the issue at the moment, and her ex-husband of course. He is set to turn up on the doorstep, but Ali just wants the life that she's chosen to have now and doesn't want anyone messing it up."

Who do you think Ali will cross paths with in the village?
"She has a run-in straight away with Nicola, but who doesn't? I'd like her to get really palled-up with Edna, because you often find the most random people end up becoming really good friends and I think Edna could do with a best bud. I could be the one who goes round for a cup of tea and educates her a little bit!"

How did the part come about for you?
"In this job, whenever you get a job, the chances are you're going to be away from home, so when the phone call came about the part, everyone was telling me, 'This is perfect for you'. It was all a bit too good to be true to start with, so I didn't build my hopes up.

"Alicya and I had different partners in the screen test and I was so sure she would get the part and because she had a different partner, I thought that was it for me. But when I got it, I was just over the moon. I'm from Leeds and live just ten minutes from the studio and Emmerdale is just an institution, so to get a job here is just amazing.

"It's a lot more subtle than some of the other soaps. Obviously there is big drama, but they do it so well. Whatever Emmerdale does, they always do very, very well. When my agent called, I was running up and down the street and ringing my mum who was screaming down the phone and crying. She says I've got to bring her to work to meet Cain. I think she'll be stalking him!"

How was your first day on set?
"I was absolutely petrified and my first scene was in The Woolpack, so I was really worried and thrown in at the deep end. I was hoping no-one would make a fuss so I could sneak on and get the scene done, but I had worked with the director before so he made this big announcement on set and I just wanted to die! Everyone was so lovely, though, and coming over to tell me about their first days. Everyone has been so welcoming."

Alicya Eyo has revealed that she is still "in awe" at joining Emmerdale.

The former Bad Girls actress joined the soap in October as Ruby Haswell, and has described her latest role as "incredible".

"I grew up with Emmerdale," she told the Liverpool Echo. "It's always been a part of my life so it's been incredible. To be in something that's been running for so long is amazing.

"I still have moments when I'm on set and I have to shake myself. I'll be in The Woolpack and I'll see photos of [past characters] Amos, Seth and Jack Sugden. And I'm in awe. I have to tell myself 'You're at work. Calm down'."

Eyo also praised the "amazing" support she has received from friends and family back home in Liverpool since she joined the show, and revealed that she is able to split her time between Leeds, London and her hometown.

"It's been really nice because people have been really supportive," she added. "One woman chased me round Asda on Smithdown Road the other day. She and her granddaughter were huge fans of Emmerdale and she wanted an autograph. She didn't have a pen so she said 'I'll meet you at the checkout.' Everyone's been great and they say 'good on you girl'.

"My family are in Liverpool so I spend a lot of my time here. Ruby's slightly different to me. But it was good I could relate to her as I'd come from a city. She's a great character to play. She's cheeky and down to earth."

Speaking about her character Ruby's ongoing financial issues with her partner Ali Spencer (Kelli Hollis), she said: "I've met lots of people who can relate to the storyline. Ruby has never had huge responsibilities but now she has a ready-made family.

"They're skint and they have to weigh up what's best for the family now there are four mouths to feed. Ruby adores Ali but she misses her old life. They wonder if they've done the right thing

Emmerdale newcomer Kelli Hollis wants Ali and Ruby to get married and have a soap wedding.
Kelli plays Ali Spencer, Rachel Breckle's younger sister, who wants to start a new life with her lover Ruby Haswell (Alicya Eyo) and her two teenage children, after leaving her husband.
She told Inside Soap magazine: "Me and Alicya would love to do that. We wouldn't want to do it just because we play lesbians though.
"Gender is irrelevant - this would be two people who love each other."
Kelli added she can't see Ali and Ruby both wearing over-the-top dresses like teen lesbians Sophie and Sacha did in Coronation Street though.
She said: "Corrie did it one way, but our characters wouldn't want a big gay wedding. I think they'd both go low-key

Emmerdale star Alicya Eyo has hinted that she would like to explore a parenthood storyline for her character Ruby Haswell.

Ruby, who joined the village a year ago, is already helping to raise her partner Ali Spencer's two children Sean and Amelia in the ITV1 show.

In a new interview with the Liverpool Echo, Eyo confirmed that she recently renewed her Emmerdale contract and is looking forward to seeing what is next for Ruby.

Eyo commented: "Coming into Emmerdale was daunting, really scary - like starting a new school - but I was so excited too. It's a dream job. Everyone's really welcoming.

"And the character is great. Ruby takes people as she sees them and expects others to do the same. She has taken on a ready made family and all that entails, and she's got to know the kids really well and been there for them.

"It's really exciting to see what happens now - maybe they will go on to have a child themselves, I don't know, but that would be a cool storyline."

The 36-year-old also expressed her excitement ahead of Emmerdale's first ever live episode this evening (October 17).

She said: "It's electric, everybody's on it. I feel so lucky to be a part of it. There's a great sense of camaraderie and everyone bonding - stuff like this brings people together. The whole week is explosive, but tonight so much can go wrong."

Emmerdale Live airs tonight from 7pm on ITV1.

Emmerdale waitress Ruby Haswell faces a tough time next week as her mother Lindy presents her with a shock ultimatum.

When Ruby tells her mum about her sexuality and baby plans for the first time, Lindy promises to give her the money for the baby if she does it without her partner Ali Spencer.

As Ruby considers the situation at The Woolpack, killer Cameron Murray enters the pub armed with a gun…

Here, Alicya Eyo - who plays Ruby - previews her character's involvement in Emmerdale's big week.

Ruby will be one of the characters who is taken hostage next week. What can you tell us about the scenes?
"It's the night of Priya's hen do. It's a sad affair, but it's a hen do nevertheless. Ruby's having one quiet drink but it turns into an absolute nightmare. Ruby's not very happy as she's been through a bit of heartbreak, so it is all rather a shock what happens next."

Why is Ruby so unhappy?
"Ruby is in a weird place as her mum has given her an ultimatum regarding Ali and the baby. She has some thinking to do and reckons she can't do this at home, so she decides to leave for a bit to get her head together.

"Sean isn't having any of this, though, and steps in to make Ruby realise that she can't just walk out on this situation, so she ends up in The Woolpack to meet up with her mum Lindy."

Ali, Ruby and Lindy

What happens next?
"There is torrential rain outside like you've never seen before. It starts flooding the village and people have to get sandbags out and start protecting their properties. Chas locks the doors of the pub as she's heard Cameron is out there, but suddenly Cameron appears with a gun."

So what were the scenes like to film?
"Oh my goodness, we've been filming it this week and I still feel traumatised like I've been through an ordeal. Dominic is incredible as Cameron. He's like we've never seen him before - all the things we thought Cameron wasn't capable of, he absolutely is! He switches from being completely calm and in control, and then at the slightest thing he's screaming and shouting with guns in our faces."

"Filming the scenes was awesome. We had a really good and intense time. The lighting is moody, there's rain outside, it was easy to get into and a great experience."

Were you excited when you first read the scripts?
"When I realised it's the anniversary of last year's live episode, I thought it was very apt. It really is as exciting as the live episode. It's been great to be part of it."

Was there a sense of bonding among the actors involved?
"Yes. With three 12-hour days, it really did feel like we were hostages! It was a frightening ordeal, and as everyone was performing well, the mood was kept through right to the end. It was very draining but intense and rewarding. I was exhausted! Putting your body through fear, shock, anger and sadness - the whole thing was draining but exhilarating at the same time."

Emmerdale's Ruby Haswell is left devastated next week as she suffers a miscarriage just days after discovering that she was pregnant.

Ruby is rushed to hospital with agonising pains shortly after she and partner Ali Spencer (Kelli Hollis) have told Sean and Amelia that their family is being extended.

Here, Alicya Eyo - who plays Ruby - reveals how her character copes with the heartbreaking experience.

How does Ruby feel once she discovers that she's pregnant?
"They've been trying for a while and Ruby was a bit concerned about whether it was going to happen or not, so when it does, she's absolutely over the moon and elated. It's something she's really wanted since being part of the Spencer family."

Why has it been so important for Ruby to have a baby?
"Ruby and Ali are so committed as a couple. Ruby's never been a family girl - she's always been quite independent and done her own thing, but since being with the Spencer family and moving to the village, it's been quite intense and she's really gotten into that. She loves it because it's something she's never had before.

"Ruby having a baby of her own is about consolidating the family even more in her mind - she thinks it'll make the family even stronger."

How does Ruby feel about Dan being the father?
"It's perfect, actually! It's quite expensive for lesbian couples to have children, because they're not eligible for IVF and all that kind of thing. With Dan being in the equation, it makes absolute sense to Ruby. Also, for Sean and Amelia to have a blood sibling is absolutely perfect."

Ruby and Ali initially try to keep it quiet, so how does Ruby react when Kerry blabs the news at the factory?
"I suppose it was kind of expected, wasn't it really, with Kerry being Kerry?! At first Ruby is a bit put out, but she thinks they're all going to know at some point anyway, so it maybe takes the pressure off a little bit once the news is all round the village. People are just really happy and supportive for Ruby and Ali, so it's fine."

Is Ruby worried about telling Sean and Amelia about the pregnancy?
"It's just about getting the right moment. Ruby wouldn't want them to hear it from anyone else first - it's really important that it's a one-on-one discussion at home.

"When they do tell the kids, it's so cute. Amelia is over the moon because she's going to have a little sister to play with, and Sean is secretly really pleased. Obviously Sean's a 15-year-old boy so he's not going to let that much show, but he's really happy."

Does Ruby panic when she suddenly starts experiencing pains next week?
"Yeah, I think deep down she knows that it's not normal and that freaks her out. In her mind it's not necessarily about losing the baby, but she just knows something is going wrong. It's still really early days into the pregnancy when this happens."

How does Ruby cope when she loses the baby?
"She's absolutely devastated. It's something that Ruby set her heart on, and the whole family were on board too. It's her devastation but then there's also the fallout of what it does to the family. The kids are really sad too as they'd fallen in love with the idea. Sean and Amelia both had different ideas of what a sibling would mean, but it meant a lot to them. For it to be taken away is really sad."

Will Ruby want to try for a baby again?
"With Ruby being Ruby, she doesn't let things stand in the way in her life. At some point, she's going to get up and go, 'Right, let's start again'."

Is Ali supportive?
"So supportive - she's an absolute rock to Ruby, she really is. They've been through a lot as a couple already so I think this will definitely make them even stronger."

Is Dan still prepared to help in the future?
"He's Super Dan - of course he is! He's just a lovely guy and he really wants the best for Ali and Ruby. It took a lot for him to come to terms with them even being together, but they're totally a family now. Dan is well on board."

Would you like to go through a full pregnancy as Ruby at some point?
"Yeah, I think I'd get used to the fake baby bump really quickly and cry when it was taken away! (Laughs.) I also think Ruby would be a really good mum. She's coped well with Sean and Amelia, so that's really spurred her on to realise that she can be a good parent. Working with babies on set would also be lovely."

Have you had much feedback over the baby storyline?
"I've had a couple of letters from people saying they really hope it happens for Ruby. I've also had lots of tweets and messages saying, 'We'll help you have a baby!' from certain men! Not in a sick way - in a generous way! (Laughs.)

"Also from the older folk who watch Emmerdale and always have - I didn't know what reaction I'd get from them, but I'll be in the aisle at Asda and they'll say, 'We hope you get that baby, girl!' They're all really excited about it, so that's really nice."

Ali Spencer resorts to drastic measures next week in order to fund her quest for a baby with Ruby Haswell.

Sensing how desperate Ruby (Alicya Eyo) is to become a mum, Ali steals William Makepeace's savings during a visit to his home.

Here, Kelli Hollis - who plays Ali - reveals why her character makes such a big error of judgement.

How are Ali and Ruby currently feeling about the baby situation?
"Since Ruby had the ectopic pregnancy, it's kicked things up a gear. That's understandable, because it's just made Ali and Ruby more determined. I think in situations like these, you become more determined when more obstacles are put in your way. There's definitely been a few obstacles so far and Ruby is getting borderline desperate now. Ali is also getting desperate for her."

Ali and Ruby try to get some money together to make their dream a reality, but the bank turns them down for a loan. How do they react?
"They're disappointed. Ali thinks that she has messed up in the meeting with the bank. She would have preferred not to do it as a face-to-face meeting with the bank, as she thinks that it's probably the way she came across which meant they didn't get it. That makes Ali feel really bad about the situation, and that leads up to why she does this stupid thing later in the week."

Ruby considers a payday loan, doesn't she?
"Yes, Ali feels really bad about them not getting a normal bank loan, but then when she sees that Ruby is going for one of these ridiculous payday loans with extortionate interest, she's angry. This would affect the whole family and Ali knows that putting them into debt isn't the best solution.

"Ali isn't the brightest financially, but she definitely knows that it's not a viable option. Once she realises what lengths Ruby is willing to go to, it affects her own behaviour."

Does Ali get angry with Ruby?
"Yeah, she feels really bad afterwards, but she's angry due to the shock of it. Ali thinks Ruby is the sensible one, so there's usually no way that she'd let the family go for one of those ridiculous loans for any reason. It flashes up how desperate Ruby is getting."

Ruby also starts to find it difficult to be around Seb's pregnant girlfriend. Does Ali realise that?
"Well, Ruby is struggling but she's pretending that she's not. Ali does realise because she flags it up a couple of times, and Ruby gets quite defensive. Ruby blows her off first, but Ali knows her better. Ali is fully aware of how Ruby feels but Ruby is trying to play it down a little bit."

How desperate is Ali when she steals the money?
"It's more of a spur of the moment thing. Given a little bit of time and thought, Ali probably wouldn't have done it, but there's been a build-up of things after the knock-back with the bank. Ali is worried about what Ruby is going to do next, so it's more of an opportunist thing and then we see Ali's regret afterwards."

What happens when they take the money back?
"Ruby takes the blame. She thinks that it's probably the best move, but she doesn't discuss it with Ali beforehand. When they both get there, Ruby takes the money and makes out to Seb that she was the one who took it."

How does Seb react?
"He's quite cool and quite calm, because he and Ruby have known each other a long time. Seb feels more disappointment than anger, but that's probably more crushing for Ruby because she is a good person and she wouldn't dream of doing something like that."

Elsewhere in the village, Dan has decided that he wants to pull out of helping Ali and Ruby have a baby. What will this mean for them?
"I think it's another blow that happens in a long line for Ruby. All of these things literally happen within a few days. Ali understands and is trying to be as supportive as she can, but it's hard when you can see that Ruby is getting knocked from pillar to post.

"Once they return the money to Seb they think, 'Well we've still got Dan' and all of their hopes are pinned on him. When he says that he's pulling out, it's the final crush."

Will they try to talk him round?
"They've got no choice really, but with the sex ban they've put him on, they've got to get through Kerry and she's very mardy if she's not getting any! Ali and Ruby making Dan's life a misery and now Kerry's too probably wasn't what Dan had planned!

"I love the character of Dan and I think he's so ace. He's got this harem of women at the moment and is like the king of Emmerdale. We call him the Hugh Hefner of Emmerdale!"

What lengths will Ali go to as she tries to help Ruby have a baby?
"I think now they've hit all these brick walls, they've realised that Ali is just as determined as Ruby is. It's easy for Ruby to see that and they're still on the same page. They both know that they want exactly the same things, but they've just got to go back to basics and start being sensible about it. They need to realise that it's not going to happen overnight."

As Kelli, do you want Ruby and Ali to have a baby?
"I'd love them to have a baby. I love working with babies - I miss little baby Archie!"

Emmerdale's Ali Spencer has some explaining to do next week when she is caught taking a pregnancy test, fearing that she could be expecting her ex-husband Dan's baby.

When Ali's partner Ruby Haswell (Alicya Eyo) learns of the baby scare, she is horrified to discover that the pair betrayed her with a one-night stand a few weeks ago.

To make matters worse, the bombshell comes just after Ruby has proposed to Ali, wanting to make a long-term commitment to their relationship.

Here, Kelli Hollis - who plays Ali - teases the drama in store as the pair's relationship hits the rocks in the aftermath.

How close has Ali come to confessing her secret to Ruby?
"I'll be honest, I don't think Ali has even come close to confessing! It's not a consideration for her because she knows what will happen if she does. Everything has been going more smoothly than it has for a long while. Ali and Ruby have really settled into their house and everything seems to be ticking along smoothly."

Why does Ali end up hurt next week?
"Kerry accidentally gives Ali a smack in the mouth, so she has to go to hospital. That means they want to do an X-ray and they have to ask Ali first if she could be pregnant. Ali admits that it's a possibility and Kerry overhears the conversation.

"Kerry knows the secret anyway and probably isn't going to say anything, but when it comes to that, her reaction is, 'Are you pregnant with Dan's baby?'"

Had Ali thought about the possibility of pregnancy before then?
"I suppose not, no. It was literally like she'd almost forgotten. When they first ask her at the hospital, Ali says she won't be pregnant but then she remembers that she has been with Dan. Then Ali has to think about what she'll do next if it is the case that she's pregnant."

What happens when an oblivious Ruby proposes?
"They come straight from the hospital. Ali hasn't had the X-ray and she hasn't had a pregnancy test either as she's panicking. Things get even worse when there are candles everywhere and Ruby and Amelia have set all of the living room up for a proposal. Ali feels absolutely mortified and guilty beyond belief."

How does Ali deal with it?
"Ali just goes with the flow. There's probably a little bit of the guilt that Ali can't hide, but it just comes across as nerves and surprise at the whole thing. It's later when Kerry tells Dan and he comes storming over that the truth comes out. He tells her to stop messing about and do the pregnancy test. Unfortunately, Ruby comes back and catches them, so they have to tell her. Ali is mortified."

How does Ruby feel about what happened?
"Ruby understands that there was no malice behind it - she knows that Dan hasn't done it to get back at her for what happened in the past. The possibility that Ali could be pregnant is more of an issue. She's gutted that there could be a baby."

Would Ali be ready to be a mum again?
"Ali doesn't want to carry a baby. She's done her bit and when they've been making family plans, she's been quite happy for Ruby to be the one who carries the baby. Under these circumstances, Abi might be willing to do it now, though. She would consider it now and do whatever it takes."

Ruby tells Ali and Amelia she is leaving for Leeds

Ruby leaves the village and breaks up with Ali, doesn't she?
"Yeah, Ruby goes to stay with her friends for a few days and then comes back to the village for her stuff. Ali is absolutely devastated. She knows what a huge, massive mistake she's made.

"I really like the way they did the storyline, because it wasn't just about two people liking each other and falling into bed. It happened because Sean was joining the army and only Ali knew how Dan felt, and only Dan knew how Ali felt about it. It was that one last connection between them and nobody else understood. That helped to create the moment.

"That helps when it comes to talking to Ruby about it, because it was never anything sexual or based on previous feelings. It was a nice way for the writers to do it."

Where does Ali go from here?
"Once Ruby leaves again with her stuff, Ali is defeated and just thinks there is no way back now. She thinks there's no way to fix it and she has to accept that she has broken Ruby's heart. Ali would be willing to do whatever it takes to win Ruby back, but she just doesn't think there is anything to do, so she doesn't want to cause any more fuss."

How does Amelia get involved?
"Amelia doesn't know exactly why they've fallen out, so she's confused about what's going on. That gets her involved because she wants to know what's happened. Kerry is great in all of this too, considering what Ali and Dan have done to her. Kerry teams up with Amelia to find a way to get these two back together…"

How do you feel about portraying the Ali and Ruby relationship?
"I love it. I think it's such a good dynamic. Obviously there are lots of lesbian and gay couples, and it's not about being a man or a woman - it's about two people falling in love with each other regardless of gender. That's definitely the case for Ali because she didn't think she was a lesbian before. She fell in love with Ruby, who just happened to be a woman.

"The fact that Ali then based such life-changing decisions on Ruby - leaving her husband and moving the kids - meant that Ruby appreciated what she had given up. They've had a lot to work out since then, but that's what makes them stronger.

"Ruby has also done a stand-up job at riding it out. She could have thought she'd taken on too much. But they are very strong as a couple and when you choose to make those big decisions, it makes a massive difference and the commitment is there from the start."

Emmerdale star Alicya Eyo has admitted that her character Ruby Haswell will struggle to forgive her partner Ali Spencer after her cheating secret is exposed.

Next week's episodes see Ruby left devastated when she discovers that Ali had a one-night stand with her ex-husband Dan Spencer earlier in the year.

Ruby packs her bags and leaves the village in the aftermath of the revelation, and although she later returns, it's unclear whether her relationship with Ali will ever be the same.

Eyo explained: "It comes as such a shock to Ruby. Her world falls apart and it's quite horrific. She's given so much to the family and she's now got to do a lot of reflecting. Ruby goes to stay with a friend in Leeds and it's a reassessment of her life.

"Ruby has been under the impression that her, Ali and the kids are a really tight unit. It's never a nice feeling to know that the person you love has been with someone else. Also, Ali and Ruby have always been honest with each other - one of their rules is to tell each other everything."

Ruby isn't intending to return to the village once she leaves for Leeds, but Ali's young daughter Amelia later teams up with Kerry Wyatt to bring her back.

Eyo said: "For Ruby it's done and there's no going back, but Kerry and Amelia are like little partners are crime. Amelia and Ruby have got an amazing relationship and she is absolutely devastated by what's happened. They've hung out together and got to know each other a lot.

"It's Amelia who is the driving force and Kerry sees that. Because Kerry is very good at being devious and sneaky, they hatch a plan to bring her back.

"Who knows if Ruby and Ali can work it out? It'll take a lot of work, a lot of talking and a lot of stuff from Ali. After something like that, you can't believe promises that your partner will never do it again. There's always going to be a barrier, so I'm not sure yet if that can be broken down or if the relationship would ever be the same."

The actress also promised that fans will see a different side to Ruby as the storyline develops.

"It's always good to have something to get your teeth into and I think it's a really good storyline for Ruby," she said. "With the journey she's had personally, it shows her gutsy side and you really find out what she's about. You really find out what people are like in situations like this and you see different sides to Ruby here."
