EastEnders newcomer David Essex sees his character's livelihood go up in flames - in his first major storyline.

Former pop star Essex, 63, who plays Eddie Moon, will find himself at the centre of an arson plot when a mystery enemy torches his antiques business.

It is a gripping Walford "welcome" for the 1970s teen heart-throb after he joined the BBC1 soap last month. Eddie will be seen enjoying a celebratory drink with sons Tyler, played by Tony Discipline, and Anthony, played by Matt Lapinskas, after they find new work premises for their business.

But behind their backs someone is seeking revenge on Eddie and the massive fire erupts in Albert Square, destroying all his stock.

Eddie is convinced it was caused by wayward son Michael, played by Steve John Shepherd, because the bitter lad blames him for his mother's suicide.

An insider said: "This is a really dramatic plot for David. He can really get his teeth into it. Despite being an Albert Square regular for only a few weeks, he has already started to establish himself as one of the most popular characters in the show."

The source went on: "Eddie will be seen celebrating with his boys when suddenly he sees his stock go up in flames.

"Tyler and Anthony try to help but nothing can be done - everything is destroyed.

"Eddie looks on devastated, his whole life appears ot have gone up in flames.

"He is determined he knows who is to blame - but is he right?" The episode is on July 25.

As Tyler and Eddie bring a battered pick-up truck to the Square, they tell Roxy that the vehicle contains the family business - their antique emporium called 'Moon and Sons'. However, the pair now need work premises so they visit the Arch and trick Mad Dog into thinking that he's in hot water with the council for squatting. Soon afterwards, 'Ron' from the council arrives to confirm the scheming duo's tale. When Mad Dog agrees to leave, Tyler and Eddie celebrate their new work location with 'Ron', who is actually Eddie's other son Anthony.

Later, Billy informs Eddie that he'd be interested in a job, but the Moon boys aren't impressed and make fun of Billy behind his back. When Lola overhears this, she decides to get revenge by setting the Moons' stock on fire. As the flames erupt on the Square, Eddie is devastated to lose such important belongings. Wrongly assuming that Michael is to blame, Eddie storms over to the B&B, pins him against the wall and angrily accuses him…

Meanwhile, over at the R&R, Ryan supplies Rainie with more drugs in exchange for cash. When Roxy spots this, she sacks him on the spot. However, what Roxy doesn't know is that Phil is in on the drugs scam and she soon finds herself overruled by the Walford hardman, who gives Ryan his job back. At the same time, when Tanya sees that Rainie has been taking drugs again, she cancels a planned meeting with Max - realising that her dishonesty is having a detrimental effect on her family.

Elsewhere, Jay and Abi get back on better terms when Jay tells Abi that she's the only one that he wants; Ryan fends off unwanted attention from Lauren; while the ice between Zainab and Masood begins to melt at the restaurant when Afia is rude to Masood and Zainab sticks up for him.

Still downbeat over his destroyed stock, Eddie pays a visit to Jack and asks him whether he knows anyone who would sell vintage sporting gear. Suddenly Michael arrives and Eddie has another confrontation with his son, still believing that he started the fire. Jack is also still angry with Michael, rebuking him over the fire and the Ronnie situation. However, when Michael tells Jack that he wants to be friends again, Jack senses that he's hurting and agrees to try.

Later, Jean agrees to let Eddie borrow a few things from The Vic to make the shop look full. Jean panics when the Moons end up taking all of Kat and Alfie's furniture from the living room and bedroom, but Eddie assures her that everything will be back in place by the time the couple return from holiday. As the day continues, Eddie spots Jack and Michael having a drink together and decides that he wants revenge. Chatting to Jack in private, Eddie makes some suspicious remarks about Michael and Ronnie's 'relationship', which leave Jack furious. Confronting Michael in the gents' toilets, Jack starts punching the Walford schemer.

Meanwhile, Yusef tells Afia that he has forgiven Masood and that she should respect Tamwar by doing the same. However, Yusef is secretly unhappy when he spots that Masood and Zainab are getting along better again. Putting a fresh plan into action, Yusef invites Zainab for a coffee at the café and tugs at her handbag, causing its contents to spill out over the floor. He blames the 'accident' on Lola, who's doing a work trial at the business and was passing when the bag dropped. As Zainab's belongings are placed back into the bag, Yusef hides the bottle of pills that was inside. When Zainab notices they're missing, Yusef helpfully provides a fresh supply…

Elsewhere, Tanya confesses to Max how terrible she feels and that she thinks Vanessa knows their secret, but the pair realise how much they enjoy being together; Shirley offers Lola a permanent position at the café; Rainie is touched when Dot comforts her and tries to get her back on the right track; and Lola confesses to Liam that she was the culprit behind the fire.

Julie goes to clean the gents' toilet at The Vic but alerts Jean when she spots blood marks inside. Jean then sees a set of keys with a St Christopher chain attached, which has a 'To Michael, love Mum' engraving. Jean goes to alert the Moons that Michael might have been attacked. Anthony confirms that the chain does indeed belong to Michael and wonders who could have been responsible for the incident. Soon afterwards, Jean checks up on Michael by visiting him at the B&B. Thanking her for returning the chain, Michael assures her that everything will be fine.

Later, Michael goads Jack at the boxing gym by threatening a violent revenge for his attack, before detailing what Ronnie was like in bed. As Jack fumes, Michael confesses that he didn't have an affair with Ronnie and Eddie was lying. Jack makes an apology to Michael and admits that he wants to confront Eddie for stirring things up. However, Michael reveals that he has his own plan for getting even with Eddie…

Meanwhile, Greg is not happy when Tanya's mother Cora turns up at the house, declaring that she's having problems with her neighbours and will be staying for a few days. Greg later complains to Jack that Tanya didn't bother to ask him about Cora's return first. Later, Greg makes it clear to Tanya that he's going to start being more assertive, revealing that he wants to move to a house that belongs equally to them both. Unhappy with the idea, Tanya warns Rainie and Cora to be nice to Greg and keep their distance for a couple of days so he changes his mind.

Elsewhere, Lola risks Liam's wrath by branding him a pervert who's been staring at her all day; Tyler clashes with Mr Lister over the mess left behind from the fire; while Billy and Julie have a successful meeting with the social worker, but things go wrong when an estate agent turns up and asks what they're doing in the house.

At The Vic, Jean looks through the post and finds a heavy and important-looking letter which is addressed to Eddie. When she hands it over to him, Eddie asks to be able to read it in private, while Mo winds Jean up over her growing crush on Eddie. Later, Mo shows Eddie around Number 23 and offers to rent it to him. After some discussion about the price, the pair eventually agree on a rate. Back at The Vic, Jean tells Julie that she's surprised Eddie wears silk underpants as they must be expensive. She also remains intrigued by his mysterious letter, wondering what's inside.

As the day continues, Tyler has another row with Mr Lister. Not wanting any trouble, Eddie is forced to bribe Lister with a £20 note to keep quiet. He also tells the boys about their new place in Number 23. When Eddie returns to The Vic, Jean teases him that she knows his little secret. A shocked Eddie thinks that she has read his letter and, getting agitated, he declares that she mustn't tell a soul. However, Jean insists that she was only talking about the silk underwear. What is Eddie hiding?

Meanwhile, Rainie is shocked when Lauren informs her about her crush on Ryan. Keen to ensure that her niece doesn't get into trouble, Rainie confesses that Ryan was the person who supplied her with drugs. Later, Ryan and Lauren discuss the matter and Ryan tells the teen that he needs help. He also adds that he's started to enjoy the challenge of getting Lauren's attention. Lauren is sceptical, claiming that Ryan is only showing an interest because he doesn't want her to tell Whitney about his criminal behaviour. However, the pair end up kissing and return to Ryan's place together.

Elsewhere, Abi and Lola have another argument over Jay; Billy is pleased to hear that social services want to help him find a proper family home, but Julie still doesn't seem keen on having Lola under her roof; while Roxy threatens to tell Shirley about Phil's dodgy dealings with Ryan, but Phil warns that she'll regret it if she does.
