Janine might be under scrutiny as death is always around her? Lydia must have been loaded. Her house did look big. Or maybe she fell on hard times ad that was the reason she moved in?

Over on EastEnders, Max will soon make the surprise decision to pop the question to Vanessa, but Tanya is the only woman on his mind at his engagement party.

As the Jessops arrive for the celebration, Greg announces that he and Tanya have started trying for a baby, but Max can sense that his ex-wife isn't entirely comfortable with the idea.

Soon afterwards, Max makes a speech and presents Vanessa with a diamond engagement ring, leaving her delighted. However, as Tanya watches on, it's clear that she's feeling jealous.

Tanya and Max later have a moment alone and Max teases his former partner about her jealousy. Tanya fiercely insists that she has nothing to be jealous about, but Max goads her by declaring that he knows she can't stand the idea of him marrying someone else.

A Walford source commented: "Max deliberately pulls out all the stops to make Tanya jealous at the party. Vanessa is oblivious to this and thinks that Max has finally put Tanya behind him.

"When Max senses that Tanya isn't completely comfortable with the idea of starting a family with Greg, he can't resist rubbing his engagement in Tanya's face, hoping to get a reaction."

13th JUne

It's the middle of the night and Janine is startled when Lydia wakes her up suddenly. Incoherent and hallucinating, Lydia declares that she can see Janine's mother June. Lydia then asks her granddaughter to get some pictures from her room and when Janine goes to find them, she spots Lydia's will and takes a look, discovering that she is leaving her fortune to charity. The pair soon discuss the contents of the will and Lydia is pleased when Janine says that she'd much rather have the pictures of her mother than any money.

In a candid discussion, the duo's bond grows stronger as they both admit that they love each other. As they chat further, Lydia admits that she wanted Janine to live with her after June died, but Frank and Pat were against the idea. Lydia then asks to be taken to the front room so she can watch the sunrise. They continue to talk but Lydia eventually stops responding to Janine. Realising that her grandmother has passed away, Janine feels more alone than ever…

Meanwhile, Vanessa realises that Max is upset over Tanya and tries to comfort him over his ex-wife moving on. When Vanessa asks whether Max still loves Tanya, he dismisses the suggestion. The pair start to bond and Max soon gets caught up in the moment, asking Vanessa to marry him. Vanessa is shocked but delightedly accepts the proposal.

Elsewhere, Mercy has a heart-to-heart with Kim, explaining that she's worried about the future as she'll be facing her immigration hearing in six hours' time. Later, Fatboy joins them at the café and tries to reassure Mercy, vowing that he'll help her win the case and won't give up without a fight.

Janine is in shock following Lydia's death and wanders around the Square in her dressing gown. Entering the café, she tells Carol and Billy what has happened and asks for their help. Billy goes back to the flat with Janine, calls the doctor and also contacts Ricky in Dubai to inform him of the sad news. Later, Pat finds out about Lydia's death and visits Janine in the flat. As Billy and Yusef leave, the pair are left alone and Pat soothes a grief-stricken Janine. However, it's not long before Janine confronts Pat over not letting her live with Lydia as a child. Pat insists that the matter was more complicated than Lydia made out, but Janine remains angry so Pat decides to leave.

Left alone in the flat, Janine looks at all of the old photos and the letters that accompany them. Following some time alone, she heads over to The Vic, where Pat and Ryan have been talking about her. The pair can't resist making cynical comments about Janine, and Ryan soon accuses his estranged wife of spending her inheritance. Pat then adds fuel to the fire by telling Janine that everyone thinks she killed her grandmother…

Meanwhile, Max and Vanessa gather Lauren, Abi and Jodie together to share the news of their engagement. While Jodie is thrilled, the Branning sisters are not so enthusiastic over the development. As Jodie starts looking into possible venues and doing wedding research, Lauren tells her mother what's going on. Tanya then heads over to confront Max, telling him that his behaviour is confusing for the girls. However, Max defends himself by pointing out that she has moved on and he's doing the same. Later, though, Max gets irritated when he finds wedding magazines at home. Things get worse as Vanessa reveals that the engagement party is already arranged for Friday, leaving Max feeling trapped by all the wedding planning.

Elsewhere, Ronnie and Michael bond as he tells her the full story behind his feud with Eddie; Fatboy makes an impassioned speech on Mercy's behalf at the court hearing, but they won't hear the verdict until two weeks have passed; Christian and Syed bicker about flat-hunting and Christian later walks out of his own birthday celebration because he's in a bad mood about his age as well as tension between Roxy and Tanya; while Eddie helps Carol with some plumbing problems, but later leaves her embarrassed by refusing her offer of a drink to say thanks.

Janine faces police questioning over Lydia
Airs on Thursday, June 16 2011 19:30 BST on BBC One

Janine returns home to the flat and is stunned to find that she's been burgled. All of Lydia's photos remain in the flat, but they've been thrown all over the floor. Soon afterwards, the police arrive but they're not there to discuss the burglary and instead reveal that Janine needs to be questioned about her grandmother's death. Janine is furious over the news and immediately suspects that Pat called the police to report her. As Janine has to be quizzed down at the station, she's driven away in a police car.

Over at the café, Pat tells Carol that she's suspicious of Janine and believes she must have killed Lydia. Eddie overhears this and chastises Pat, pointing out that murder is a very serious accusation to make. Although Pat isn't pleased at him sticking his nose in, she can't help but be charmed by the newcomer as he starts chatting further. Later, Janine returns from the police station and confronts Pat over reporting her to the police. However, Pat protests her innocence and Ryan confesses that it was him who made the call.

Meanwhile, Tanya needs help dealing with a drunken Rainie and tries to call Greg, who's doing some building work over at Max's. Greg doesn't hear the call, but a scheming Max does and cancels it. Tanya then calls Max and he pops over to help her. When Rainie is put to bed to sleep off her drunken state, Max tries to make a move on Tanya, declaring that they're meant to be together. They almost kiss, but Greg arrives suddenly and apologises for missing Tanya's call. Tanya realises what Max did and is annoyed with her ex once again. Later, Tanya tries to come up with reasons why she didn't just go over to get Greg. Panicking, she lies to Greg, telling him that Rainie came at her with a knife. Greg is stunned and declares that Rainie has to go, so a guilty Tanya tells her sister that she'll have to return to their mother's place.

Elsewhere, Tamwar remains confused over whether to believe Masood or Yusef; Max tells Vanessa that she'll have to put her insecurities over Tanya behind her if they're going to marry; Syed arranges for Christian to have his birthday party in a gay bar, but a paranoid Christian wrongly accuses Syed of flirting with other men and storms out of the party; Eddie spends time with Liam and helps him to fix an old fruit machine, leaving Carol impressed as it's the first time Liam has appeared happy since Ricky's departure; while Fatboy and Darren help Tamwar prepare for his forthcoming dance at the Mendi.
