Next year's Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26, adhering to the late-February schedule that was instituted in 2004, organizers said on Tuesday.

The 84th annual event will return to the Kodak Theatre, its home since 2002. Nominations will be unveiled on January 24.

This year's ceremony took place on February 27, with nominations announced on January 25.

The Oscars used to be given out in late March or early April, making for a lengthy awards season.

Dates have not yet been announced for other awards shows around that time, including the Grammys and the Golden Globes.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Academy Awards organizers have introduced an element of mystery into next year's Oscar ceremony by deciding that anywhere between five and 10 movies will compete for the coveted best picture prize.

The actual number of nominees will not be revealed until nominations are announced on January 24.

The new rule, announced after a late-night board meeting on Tuesday, follows a decision two years ago to double the number of nominees to 10 in a bid to increase ratings.

That move seemed to work, as crowd-pleasing films such as "Inception," "The Blind Side" and "Up" got a shot at the top prize (although they did not win).

On the other hand, some Oscar observers complained that the expansion devalued the significance of a best picture nomination and allowed undeserving pictures to sneak onto the ballot.

"A best picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit," said Bruce Davis, the executive director of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. "If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honour in a given year, we shouldn't feel an obligation to round out the number."

In order to ensure a nomination under the new system, a picture will have to receive at least five percent of first-place votes.

The new system will pose a dilemma for the studios as they wonder how much money they should spend lobbying for a particular movie if the field is tightened.

On the other hand the "new twist" -- as the Academy described it -- will help the Oscars battle awards-season fatigue.

By the time the nominations are announced, front-runners have already emerged at ceremonies for the Critics Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globes.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will be presented in Hollywood on February 26.

Oprah Winfrey is said to be at the head of the list of candidates to host the 2012 Oscars.

Motion Picture Academy sources state that the former Oprah Winfrey Show host tops the contenders to headline the awards show, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Given that Winfrey recently concluded a 25-year run of her chatshow programme, insiders believe that now is the ideal time to capitalise on the icon's popularity. In addition, Oscar showrunners reportedly hope to boost the awards show's audience by hiring Winfrey as the host.

James Franco recently spoke out about his much-criticised performance co-hosting this year's Academy Awards, revealing that he felt trapped.

Winfrey recently admitted to having several regrets regarding the recent launch of her OWN cable network, stating that she would have taken a different approach if she was able to repeat the launch.

In late June, the 57-year-old was awarded with an honorary doctorate degree by South Africa's University of the Free State.

Ricky Gervais has said that he probably won't host the Golden Globes for a third time.

The actor and comedian presented the Hollywood awards show earlier this year, following his debut appearance as host at the 2010 ceremony.

Speaking to Matt Lauer on NBC's Today, he played down questioning about whether he would return: "I just don't think I should do it. I did it twice. I wanted to improve on the first time and I think I did that. I'll probably leave it there."

Lauer also asked Gervais how he felt about the controversy surrounding some of his jokes at the 2011 ceremony now that some time has passed since the broadcast.

Gervais said: "I feel the same way I felt at the time. I didn't do anything wrong. I crossed a line? Who drew the line? I didn't draw the line. Where is this line? It wasn't that bad. If they saw my stand-up their heads would explode!

"I was poking fun at a room full of people who pretend to be someone else all day. It wasn't a room full of wounded soldiers. These are Hollywood actors!"

He added: "I don't think they were that annoyed anyway. I think controversy breeds controversy. I don't think there was anything cutting-edge or nasty or particularly controversial about it."

Lauer, who revealed he had been a fan of Gervais's hosting and urged him to do it again, also pointed out that Gervais has been nominated for an Emmy Award for his efforts.

Gervais's new movie Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World opens August 19. He plays a talking dog in the children's adventure, which also stars Jessica Alba and Jeremy Piven.

Eddie Murphy has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to host next year's Academy Awards ceremony.

Producer Brett Ratner is due to present his pick for host to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences next week, and is expected to select Murphy as his top choice.

"Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino," an insider told Deadline. "He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has Saturday Night Live experience before a live crowd."

While no deal with Murphy is in place as yet, the Trading Places star is said to be "showing interest" in hosting the prestigious event.

Murphy recently worked with Ratner on the director's upcoming action comedy Tower Heist.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony earlier this year, to a mostly negative reception.

An official announcement regarding the host for next year's Oscars ceremony is expected later this month.

Billy Crystal has announced that he will host the Academy Awards ceremony in 2012.

Crystal's involvement with next year's Oscars has been now been confirmed by the Academy following a statement made by the actor on his official Twitter account on Thursday evening (November 10).

Crystal wrote: "Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show."

In an official statement, he added that he is "thrilled" to return to the Academy Awards stage,

This will be the ninth time that Crystal has hosted the Oscars, with the most recent being 2004.

He will take over hosting duties from Eddie Murphy, who quit the position earlier this week following the resignation of producer Brett Ratner, who had been criticised for using the word "f*gs".

Tom Sherak, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president, said: "I'm thrilled to welcome Billy back to the Oscar stage. He's a comic legend and Oscar icon, and it feels good to have him back where he belongs."

The actor was reportedly the first choice of new producer Brian Grazer, who replaced Ratner yesterday.

Grazer said: "Like so many others, I've been eager to see Billy host again. It's very gratifying that he agreed to do it with Don [Mischer] and me at the helm."

Crystal had spoken of his interest in hosting next year's ceremony back in August.

Jennifer Lopez has been announced as an Oscar presenter for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards ceremony.

The news was revealed today by producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer.

Lopez, who split from her husband Marc Anthony in July 2011, revealed earlier today that she's not sure if she will marry again.

Lopez also told Matt Lauer on Today this morning that it was "surreal" to top People's list for 'Most Beautiful People' of 2011.

She said: "It's weird and it's great and nice and all that. It's just surreal, kind of, in a way."

The Oscars will air on Sunday, February 26 on ABC.

Tina Fey has been added to the Oscars presenter lineup.

The 30 Rock actress previously presented a 'Best Original Screenplay' Oscar to The Hurt Locker alongside Robert Downey Jr during the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010.

Last year, Fey's 30 Rock co-star Alec Baldwin made news headlines when he was kicked off an American Airlines flight.

Fey blamed herself for the incident, telling David Letterman: "Alec, bless his heart, he had some trouble on the plane a few weeks ago.

"When I heard that news story, my first reaction [and] the thing that I was upset about was [that] last spring… I said to [Alec], 'Hey, there's this really fun game called Words With Friends'."

Fey's movie credits include Date Night with Steve Carell and Baby Mama with Amy Poehler.

The 84th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 26 on ABC in the US and on Sky Movies in the UK.
