Channel 5 has today announced a new competition surrounding its Australian soap Home and Away, which will give members of the public the chance to launch a TV presenting career and go behind the scenes at the long-running series.

The contest, titled 'Home and Away: Bay Reporter', will search for an aspiring TV host who will fly out to Sydney, Australia with a Channel 5 film crew and present two fanzine programmes about the Summer Bay drama.

Any UK resident aged 18 or over can apply for the lucrative opportunity and the lucky winner will get the chance to meet the cast, conduct star interviews, explore the sets and visit Palm Beach, where most of the serial's location scenes are filmed.

Greg Barnett, Channel 5's commissioning editor of entertainment, daytime and soaps, commented: "This is the opportunity of a lifetime. Home and Away is a fantastic series set in an amazing location. 23 years on and it still feels fresh. The cast includes some stunning new faces and much-loved old favourites.

"I'm thrilled to be able to offer UK viewers the platform to launch a possible career as a TV presenter. If you're not a fan of Home and Away already, now's the time."

Ray Meagher, who plays Summer Bay legend Alf Stewart, added: "Having been on Channel 5 for many years now, it's great to welcome somebody new to television and into our midst. I look forward to helping the winner gain all the insight they need to make 'Bay Reporter' a great success."

Entrants can apply via Channel 5's official Home and Away website and further details about the competition will be revealed in this evening's edition of OK! TV, which airs at 6.25pm. The magazine show will also follow the competition's progress in the coming weeks.

All entries will be viewed by a panel from Channel 5 and a shortlist of five applicants will be announced next month. The public will then be invited to vote online for their favourite and the winner will be confirmed at the end of May.

Speaking of the competition, Home and Away's series producer Cameron Welsh said: "We're excited to have the opportunity to work with Channel 5 on this project, which will allow our UK fans the opportunity to go behind the scenes and gain exclusive access and insight into the cast and crew and the making of the show. Good luck to all prospective Bay Reporters."

Channel 5 (UK) flew Joanna Adeyinka-Burford to Sydney to check out her favourite show.

Joanna won Channel 5's 'hot new talent' search for a would-be TV presenter. The prize was to fly out to Sydney to film two very special Home and Away fanzine shows.

Hundreds entered; thousands of voted - but there could only be one winner, 26-year-old teaching assistant and youth worker Joanna Adeyinka-Burford.

She found out from Home and Away star Axle Whitehead that she'd topped the public vote. "Winning the Bay Reporter competition has been amazing! I said before it would be like a dream come true, and it really is" Joanna said.

After filming the two shows, Joanna returned home from Palm Beach laden with Summer Bay gossip.

Here, in the first of these clips, Joanna arrives at Network Seven, where she can't resist a cheeky snoop around the green room ahead of her meeting with series producer Cameron Welsh.

Channel 5 bosses have announced that their Home and Away 'Bay Reporter' specials will air next month.

Earlier this year, station chiefs launched a search for an aspiring TV host who would fly out to Sydney, Australia to present two behind-the-scenes documentaries about the Summer Bay drama.

Joanna Adeyinka-Burford was later chosen as the winner in a public vote and she filmed the fanzine programmes back in the summer, chatting to cast members backstage and on location.

Highlights of the shows will include River Boy stars Steve Peacocke (Brax) and Dan Ewing (Heath) going head-to-head in a special challenge, Axle Whitehead (Liam) performing one of his favourite rock songs, and David Jones-Roberts (Xavier) and Charles Cottier (Dex) taking on a challenge of their own in the battle for April's affections.

Other cast members who will feature include Luke Mitchell (Romeo), Ada Nicodemou (Leah), Josh Quong Tart (Miles), Ray Meagher (Alf), Lynne McGranger (Irene), Esther Anderson (Charlie) and Lisa Gormley (Bianca), answering viewer questions and offering a sneak peek backstage.

Home and Away's 'Bay Reporter' shows air on Thursday, December 1 and Friday, December 2 at 6.25pm on Channel 5.
