View Full Version : Axing Den....big mistake!?!
With the return of Phil, Grant and Peggy Mitchell, I cannot help but think axing Den was one of the biggest mistakes EE has made. Currently their ratings are poor and if you watch an episode it is clear to see why its just boring at the moment. :thumbsdow
Just think of the storylines he could have had when Phil and Grant came back (Grant and Den meeting would have been fantastic). Grant wanting to get Den and Dennis for stiching up Phil, once Phil was out they could have had a Phil/Grant v Den/Dennis fued along with Johnny Allen in the middle of it. I think that storyline would have boosted the ratings for Eastenders and brought some much anticipated action to the show, fair enough the Mitchells coming back will improve the ratings anyway but with Phil, Grant, Den and Dennis a Mitchells v Watts fued would have been fantastic.
It was said John Yorke was furious with LB for axing Den as I believe he would have loved to have kept Den and used him in such ways....I bet he feels like I do about it :wall: lol.

I don't think it was a mistake, he'd served his purpose, you can't have too much of a good thing [unless it's Shannis]

Exactly. :D
He should NEVER have been brought back. The man was murdered ffs. Another case of the producers treating the viewers with contempt.

His comeback was totally implausible. The story had more holes than a colander

In my opinion the biggest mistake EE has ever made,my mams refused to watch since that night so has a lot of her friends, for a lot of us Ee will never be the same again,1 thing though i don't think it was LB who axed him'he said he had a great working relationship with her and liked her'it was KH 1 who it was reported yorke was furious with and she got axed wihin days of yorke going, whats that saying-what goes round ,comes round-bye-bye KH

If the writers had made Den into the likeable character he was in the 80's then I think it would have worked, but he was destroyed. When a character starts turning on their own family you know they've had it. 'Family' is a very important concept in EE, and Den just didn't get it.
It would probably have been unrealistic, but personality transplants are common in EE. If they had changed his character for the better, kept his dodgy side, but have him come round to the fact that Sharon and Dennis were in love, and also lost a bit of his obessiveness towards his daughter. They may have got away with an about turn. Stopped him getting to the point of destruction, but I think it was more to do with what the actor got up to in his personal life that made them to decide to axe Den.
Personally I don't think Leslie Grantham's life, has anything to do with how good an actor he is. But the decision was made. In the end I think it was the right step for Den to leave the show, but if his character hadn't of turned out the way he did, I would definetely think differently.

After much thought on the subject and through watching a lot of DVD's, yes I think it was time for Leslie to move on and Den to go. But miss him I do! I miss the dynamic and I'm slightly worried things with Shannis won't be the same without him. I 'spose for us (and Chrissie) he'll never quite leave Walford!
Folks you are missing the point. DEN was murdered by a gunman at the side of Walford Canal, had a funeral and was buried so in actual fact it was impossible for him to return. Its a simple as that. There is only one man who returned from the dead and that was 2000 years ago.
He should never have been brought back unless they had decent and REAL storylines to go with it the EE bosses ruined the image of Den and turned him into a grubby, seedy dirty old man
But no matter how good the storylines they had the simple FACT is that DEN was dead

'Way back' Eastenders producers made the decision that you didn't see his body in the canel so that they could bring him back.It was planned near on 14 year ago!
They did that on purpose the whole no body thing even though Leslie Grantham filmed his death scenes they were axed last minute but a few people weren't happy about it
But no matter how good the storylines they had the simple FACT is that DEN was dead
Good point but it was never really proved.
Sorry that does not wash with me they could just have disappeared him. Den was shot dead. His body was identified a post mortem carried out and he was buried end of DEN
They had a body with no teeth (nice), blood on a blade of grass, a ring found by the waters edge (even though on the epi Den died he wasn't wearing that ring and a witness who heard a splash but didn't stick around to see more
Sorry, but the body would have to have been positively identified. A post mortem was carried out. DNA tests would have taken place, fingerprints would have been taken. The identity would have been established before the funeral could have taken place
The body had been in water though so it was decayed.

They still could have gotten DNA from it, blood as well
Anyway Jack Dalton organised Den's killing and the murder of his would be hitman it would be easy for him to fix it he had the contacts etc

Yep it certainly would have done all the body was so decomposed I remmeber Sharon describing the body to Den on his return YUCK
I remember that documentary it was on his first day back.
Fix the police, the coroner, the pathologists et al. Why would Dalton want to fix things to make it appear that DEN was DEAD if he wasnt. DAlton wanted Den dead so if anybody was going to fix things it would have been DEN who would want DAlton to think he was dead.
I've got it on DVD somewhere, I will cap some pictures from it sometime.

What his skin floating off or the episode in general?
Kool I remember one bit Louise Berridge showed the clip of Den's arrival at the canal and he paid the cabbie he didn't have his signet ring but it was found near where the body was in the canal it was a set up either by Dalton to put the cops off the scent that it aint Den dead or Den put it there himself
Sorry but how long was DEN in the water. It would take a considerable time for all the flesh to decompose in cold water. Its a fact that terrorists who have kidnapped bodies have kept them in water tanks to preserve them

But this water was acidic, Walford Canal is rotten.
Also Dalton had contracted someone to kill Den the fact he screwed up looks bad on Dalton who relies on fear and power to him it would be deemed as a weakness to of failed so he killed the other guy and no one is any of the wiser
Den (or not Den) was in the water for fourteen months

When Grantham left EE the first time they did not want him back so he was KILLED OFF. Had they any intentions of him returning to EE the would have made him go on the run, or up to Leicester> As far as I can remeber he left under a cloud and that was why he was killed off

Does it really matter that Chrissie killed him if he's already certified as being dead anyway? (Have just been talking with a friend on MSN and this came up). If Chrissie's already got a death certificate then what's the problem. He's even got a grave.
But Den's not in the grave though and if he's really under the cellar and he's found it would still be a crime.
That was another loose end they never turned up, they should have exhumed that poor body that's buried next to Ange :)
what suits the Elstree publicity machine
alan45 did you like Den in the eighties?
I did. He was superb back then as was EE. Thats what annoys me now. People who have only been watching it for a few years think its brill when if they were around when it was in its heyday they would realise what a pile of keek it has become over the last couple of years
It's had so many different kinds of golden periods, the eighties one was nitty and gritty the 90s heyday was good too and then JY had one until about mid 2002 then LB took over and it's been rubbish.
Yes it was great back then. Once the storylines ventured into fantasyland i stopped really watching it

Don't you find any improvements? I know you said it was getting better but can you elaborate on how it's doing this? What are they doing now that wasn't previously getting done?
Well I like the way they are making more use of the real actors like Dot and Jim, Ian etc instead of relying on some of the new ones who are only there because they are FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think they should make more use of established characters who we care about instead of bringing in new ones whose history and personality changes to suit whatever the producers think will suit at the time
It's definately on dry land now though.

They were awful and there was so little in the show already when they were introduced.

I bet if John Yorke had stayed though and they'd been introduced then they would have been a success. Berridge just didn't have the right direction for anybody. Ahhh Kathleen Hutchison hailed as the saviour of EE. She didnt last too long
If she was hailed the saviour it was only by the viewers themselves and not officially. Personally I think she was okay but she had an unhealthy obsession with the gangster theme that had helped make EastEnders unpopular under Louise Berridge.
Real gangsters like Steve Owen would have been good unlike the plastic Andy hunter and St Johnny Allen
I really liked Steve Owen too, I've been dipping in and out of the UKTV Gold episodes and he's still on them, they're fantastic.

I think the way they planned Den's return was great, bringing back Dennis first, then having him find out the truth about Den. It was all very well written. And having Dennis and Sharon sleep together on the very night he came back, really powerful stuff! I think it was realistic. Den's character was capable of something like this. And we could see with the world that Den had gotten himself involved with, this could quite easily happen. It was a huge shock when it did occur, but it was great!
However once Den had been brought back and the initial first episodes had aired, things started going downhill. And it seemed that the storylines which Louise Berridge must have tempted Leslie Grantham back with had disappeared into thin air. There were a few feeble attempts at storylines, but nothing captured the character that Den once was. It was just pathetic!
Den should not have been brought back. An EE legend was totally ruined with poorly written scripts. Considering this, EE did a good job of convincing us that this could have happened and this took a lot of doing so it was terrible that he was written out again in such a ridiculous way. He should have just "gone away" so that the possibility of him returning was still there. EE made the whole thing ridiculous and this is why the show has not recovered.

It's only soap so bringing him back for me was a great idea, loved his return, great episodes, his 1 liners were fantastic, then they decided to give him rubbish scripts, but then came the 2 hander with dot and den getting the vic back and ee was unwatchable again, then came the new prpducer kh who totaly destroyed his charector,a lot of credit should go to LG because he made those scenes seem credible when the idea that den would sink that low is not beleivable, his final episode fantastic, his lines were fantastic, but Ee have lost a fantastic actor with a big following and instead of killing him they should have let us see him escaping and then wether he returned in the future or not, everytime in the future that anyone does anything bad to his kids we'd look at the vic door to see if he's back to sort it,or just brought him back every christmas to see the kids cause havoc sort out his kids and then get on a plane untill next year, what a waste of a great actor.
While I can agree with you about how well he did when he came back, the fact that I felt the excuses given were an insult to my intelligence put a bit of a dampner on his return. Had they have said he was away under some sort of witness protection scheme then that could have explained why all the evidence (dna, forensic and pathological) was concocted.
callummc

they couldn't do that cos dens never been a grass, thats why 1 of the future storylines didn't ring true,he would have lost his street cred, remember dens body was headless so there was no dental records it had also been in the canal for a year, and there was no dna then,EE did a good job and once he was back it was as if he had never been away and once he was back in the vic and the new team went in just think of den v grant, den v plill, den v peggy and how he would have eventually except shannis and let it run it's course or lose his kids
.................so there was no dental records it had also been in the canal for a year, and there was no dna then,
DNA was in widespread use during the 1980s
Before the funeral took place they would have had to have had some form of POSITIVE identification otherwise the body could have been anyones

does it matter in this country dna was not widespread,it's only soap anyway and it's a well know saying in soap that your only dead if your bodys seen and buried and like i said beforeonce he was back it's like he'd never been away some peole liked him some didn't ,thats life, personally i can't stand alfie, nanna, chrissy, johnny, but a lot of people like them, thats why every charector is different so the audience can choose, but still watch the soap fpr the charectors they like, but for me Ee died with den

Well it matters to me, I do like some semblance of realism in the soaps. Hence I was totally underimpressed with the burning of Dens shops by Mad Maya.
The producers of ALL soaps think either that their audiences are stupid or have the attention span of a gnat.
However we will have to agree to disagree about the demise and subsequent resurrection of Dirty Den Webcam Man Watts and his subsequent APPARENT demise under the cellar floor of the East End's most dangerous Public House :)

Well 1 things for sure i think he'd be happier under the floor of his beloved pub than floating round the murky canal for a year, thinking of the canal story that was unrealistic to cos we've got a canal at the back of our house and over the last 2 years sadly there's been about 5 deaths, but the bodies have allways been found right away, except 1 poor man who was found after a week,

Yes, bodies do come to the surface after a week or so. Den's head was supposed to have been decapitated by a passing barge. Stiil I suppose these things happen when you get shot by a bunch of daffodils

Thats one of the reasons i say it's only soap'light entertainment,if the real police investigated real crime in the same way as the walford police, well we would be in trouble, talk about getting away with murder

Its probably already been said but i think they should have kept him! still done the 20th annerversary episodes but just not killed him. Chrissie could have been pregnant and got him 2 pay her like £20k to have him back! and she could have faked brain damage after he smashed her head against the fruit machne!!!

:rotfl: What an imagination you have!! I think it would have been really good if everyone thought Den would die in the run up to it like we all did, except that he didn't in the actual episode. I know its my fault cos I read spoilers but sometimes I wish there were some surprises in Eastendes that we don't know about!

i agree, when i find out somethings going to happen, like the fire thing with danny, i cant leave it at that as i knew ages ago and as im so impatient i have to know now. if they told me the day before it was on then id be alright but theyre out so long in advance that i just have to look. the only spoilers i managed not to read (and im proud of myself for that lol!) were the ones for the last epi of dr who as i only saw the spoilers posted on friday so i only had a day to go. ee is so much harder though

I liked him comming back but maybe it was time for him to go. I wouldn't have minded him being there for a bit longer but unless Den died shannis could never be together.

technically they could...but it would have been very hard
den was a master at manipulation and mind games... but shannis seem stronger this time... they are determined to stay together and not let anything split them up...dya hear that zoe slater!!!

Yes I think so, and I did feel a bit sorry for her. Nobody bite my head off! lol. It must have been very difficult for her to say she was glad for Dennis and Sharon. Zoe loves Dennis very much, and the way Den twisted it like he did, was disgusting! It was sweet that by the time Zoe and Dennis parted, they left it on good terms. And I think the unfinished business that Dennis was referring to with Den, was partly to do with wanting to get his own back for the way he treated Zoe. I saw Dennis's face when Zoe said in the Vic she was pregnant with Den's baby. It must have brought memories back about his mum too.
It's fair to say that both Zoe and Dennis have made mistakes. And now they are able to make new lives, Dennis with Sharon and Zoe with a new life in Ibiza, it's more than what's Den's got isn't it?! Of course Den is totally to blame for it!
hi i totaly agree, PLEASE PLEASE CAN you nice people show mercy and answer my dr who scripts?

I think it was a mistake as he was a good actor and it was good that the Watts family was altogether even though they didn't get on

chrissie would be a little weak woman and shannis couldnt carry on, dens death ahs moved the show on a great deal and made many characters a lot stronger
he may be dead but he will always be a big part of the storylines and characters in Eastenders
nothing lasts forever...
