Former Hollyoaks actor James Sutton has joined the cast of Emmerdale.

The 26-year-old, who starred as John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 soap, is to take on the role of mechanic Ryan Lamb, son of Faye (Kim Thomson).

Ryan first appears in the village in June and quickly becomes entangled in his mother's revenge plot on Mark Wylde (Maxwell Caulfield), while also catching the attention of many of the local females, most notably Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward).

As Mark attempts to prevent the skeletons in his closet from emerging, Ryan's arrival makes the self-made millionaire realise just what his lies could cost him.

Speaking of his signing, Sutton said: "I'm thrilled to be joining a show as respected and well-loved as Emmerdale. It was always on in our house when I was growing up so I’m excited to be a part of it.

"I'm looking forward to playing such an interesting character and one so different from previous roles I've played."

Series producer Gavin Blyth added: "This year will spell a new era for Emmerdale and I'm delighted to be welcoming James to the cast as a key component in the new direction the show will be taking. James is an extremely talented actor and will bring a real presence to the role of Ryan."

Sutton is the fourth actor announced to be joining Emmerdale as part of the show's 2009 revamp. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Jeff Hordley will reprise his role as Cain Dingle at the end of April. At the same time, UK soap's first blind actress Kitty McGeever joins as Lisa Dingle's (Jane Cox) friend Lizzie Lakely.

Emma Atkins is also due to return as vixen Charity Tate.

Sutton announced his decision to quit Hollyoaks in June last year following his two-year stint as John Paul when the teen soap's McDean storyline reached its natural Sunset Ending resolve. His departure tied in with the brief return of Guy Burnet as Craig Dean.

At the end of last year, Sutton made a guest appearance as a narcoleptic in Casualty.

Emmerdale's newest recruit James Sutton has revealed more details about his new character.

The 26-year-old, who joined the show earlier this year as Faye Lamb's (Kim Thomson) son Ryan, teased that he's a "lot more grounded' than his former Hollyoaks character John Paul McQueen.

Speaking to DS at the British Soap Awards, he said: "He's a mechanic and there's some interesting stuff going on with his mum and his dad, or who he thinks is his dad... And he might be a romance with a couple of the lovely ladies in the village.

"He's a lot more grounded, a lot more grown up - and he's heterosexual! Which means that my mother can actually watch me on TV without hiding behind a cushion!"

Having captured the minds of millions during Hollyoaks' McDean era, actor James Sutton - who played John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 teen soap - is swapping Chester for the Yorkshire Dales as he takes on the role of Emmerdale's ladies' man Ryan Lamb. Son of relative newcomer Faye (Kim Thomson), Ryan arrives in Yorkshire completely unaware that his mother has tracked down his father Mark Wylde/Daniel Lamb (Maxwell Caulfield), the man she presumed had been dead for 27 years. We recently gave James a call to chat about switching soaps and what's to come for Ryan.

How have you settled in?
"It's been really, really good. It's a fantastic set and studio, which is really easy to work in. All the people are lovely and have helped me settle in extremely well. I'm just having a ball really."

How different is it to working at Hollyoaks?
"Everything just works a lot smoother at Emmerdale. It just works. A lot of the actors are a bit older than myself, and I don't want to throw the word professionalism around too much, but they all know their lines, know exactly what they're doing and they're a lot more experienced. For someone like myself, it's great to work with the guys here. On set, they help me out and throw ideas around."

You've said previously that you'd never do another soap - what made you change your mind?
"I've had quite a lot of contact with Emmerdale over the last year or so – I've had a few castings and met various people. This was the first part that came up that I was really interested in, though. It's a good story and I'm working with some fantastic people - I couldn't really turn that down. It's a really good opportunity for me and I know I said that I wouldn't do another soap, but at the time, I probably didn't want to do another one. It's just the way things work out."

How can you describe your character?
"He's a laddish lad and an out of work mechanic. He's grown up with his mum and is very protective of her. I wouldn't say he's a ladies' man, but he has an eye for the pretty ladies in the village. He's a nice guy, but when the storyline progresses and we discover things about Ryan's family, the audience might possibly see another side to him – maybe a darker side..."

Ryan's mum Faye has been in and out of Emmerdale since March - where's Ryan been in the mean time?
"He's been living away, away from his mum on his own. He did have a job as a mechanic but he lost that, having been made redundant. So he decides to go and sponge off his mother for a little while. He discovers that there's some kind of relationship between his mum and Mark [Wylde] which he thinks is a relationship, which is a bit awkward for all parties. Over time, he'll discover otherwise."

Has Ryan ever seen Mark before?
"No, not even in a photograph. He doesn't know what his dad looks like."

Do you think it's all a red herring that Mark's his father?
"Well you know what these soap writers are like…You believe one thing and then they pull the rug from under you and it's completely different!"

What was your reaction when you were told that you'd be half-naked in your first scene?
"Well…It's one of those things! I'm used to it from my time with Hollyoaks! They had me doing all kinds of bizarre things! They had me going to the shop in my underwear! I'm kind of used to gratuitous nudity. It's quite a nice scene really because non-DS readers won't know who it is in the shower."

Did you hit the gym in time for your first scene?
"Not really. I'd just been on holiday and I'd been quite poorly while I was there, so I'd lost a lot of weight anyway. And I had a tan, so I didn't mind too much."

Apparently you're in line for a screen romance with Sammy Winward who plays Katie?
"I only know what you know, which is what I've read in the press. Apparently I'm going to be having a screen romance with Sammy's character, yeah."

Does Ryan have secrets of his own?
"It's a slow-burner, which is why I like to become more established first, because then the audience can empathise with you on screen. I don't want to keep mentioning Hollyoaks, but that's what Bryan Kirkwood did with John Paul. It was a slow-burn for a good six months. Here at Emmerdale, Gavin's a smart guy and he knows soap and how they work - I totally trust him with the storyline.

You've turned up just in time for the show rejuvenation - what's it like on set at the moment? Is there a buzz about the place?
"I know Emmerdale went through a bit of a difficult patch, but I wasn't there for that, so I'm not sure what it was like before. I've come in, though, and everyone's really positive. What's nice is that everyone really likes going to work there, which is a fantastic thing. Everyone's really enthusiastic when they get here, too, and are passionate about what they do. I don't know if that's been brought on by 'the shake-up' or Gavin coming in, but it's a really nice place to work."

Gavin obviously cast you for your acting abilities, but there's the additional element of your huge fanbase. Do you feel a sense of responsibility?
"I don't know if it's a responsibility, per se. There is a certain element of pressure when you join any new company - I felt that when I joined Hollyoaks because I knew it was going to be such a big storyline. So it felt similar with this. I know that I have fans who respect my work and follow my career, so obviously I want to do well for them and want them to continue supporting me. I also want Emmerdale to go from strength to strength. All I can do is my best and hope that endears me to everyone, and fingers crossed that people dig my work!"

How long are you there for?
"I'm here for a year at the moment. Obviously there's potential for it to be longer, but that's not down to me."

Do you still keep in touch with any of the Hollyoaks guys?
"I see them out and about. I was out walking my dog the other day and I saw Zoë Lister, so had a good chat with her. I still bump into people and we drink in the same kind of bars round where I live. The cast's changed so much since I was there, though. There are so many new people."

Were you a little disappointed that McDean didn't get the recognition it deserved at soap award ceremonies?
Not really. We achieved everything that we set out to achieve and I think the fact that you're still asking me about it now speaks volumes. Awards are all well and good, but the fact that fans are still talking about it is enough credit."

he just comes accross as so arrogant. he doesn't talk nicely at all of hollyoaks, as much as i dont rate it, if it wasnt for hollyoaks he wouldn't even get considered for emmerdale.

when he left hollyoaks i read a interview when he came across just as badly. that soap's were beneath him. moron

Lets give him a chance in Emmerdale but I fear his storylines will be all too predictable, going off with Scarlett and Victoria, maybe Gennie too and he will have testosterone battles with Cain.

Maybe he goes off with Lexie towards the end of his contract and takes her with him into the sunset :cheer:

I hoped that Victoria and Aaron would get together as they are 2 lonely souls wanting someone to love them
This new Ryan Lamb character I'm not too sure about but I bet money that Katie will be sniffering around him as every new male is always linked to her.

I think its a different role, so you never know he might be brilliant. I have to say i have been enjoying emmerdale more since more new characters and the old ones have been returning, i not seen it in ages since the wyldes joined i think it has become better. Dont know why. I am also looking forward to the other new fammily thats coming. Is it the Bartons, maybe Ryan will get with the elder girl.

He is playing Mark's son yes? So he is older than Maisie and Nathan or younger?

He will probably be put with Katie or Scarlett :thumbsdow

Hannelene

Is he Mark/Daniel first born? So I guess he would be older then Nathan and Maise as didn't he walk out on Faye 30 yrs ago not realising she was pregnant?

Katie is the typical quintessential blonde that all soaps have, & is good eye candy for all the male viewers of the soap. Not to mention classy attractive & stylish village definately needs more females like her

James Sutton has promised that there are "exciting" times ahead for his Emmerdale character Ryan Lamb.

In an interview with DS, Sutton said that fans can expect the village mechanic to become more prominent on screen over the next few months.

Ryan's life was recently turned upside down as he discovered that businessman Mark Wylde (Maxwell Caulfield) was his biological father. The bigamist has since been murdered by wife Natasha in an act of revenge.

Speaking of Ryan's forthcoming plotlines, Sutton revealed: "He's going to have a lot more to do in the coming months. He's got to come to terms with the fact that he's got this new family now and this father who vanishes - he doesn't really get a chance to talk to him before he disappears.

"He strikes up a relationship with Will, my new little brother which is really nice and Ryan's got a lot coming up with Nathan. Those two really are at loggerheads. We've got some really exciting stuff coming up together."

Sutton also said that he is happy to stick with the role for the foreseeable future as he is having "an absolute ball".

He added: "It's honestly the best place to work. The people there are just wonderful and they've made me feel so welcome and [series producer] Gavin [Blyth]'s doing a great job. It feels like we're part of something really quite exciting that's on the up. The viewing figures have been really good the last couple of weeks and I don't want to go anywhere right now."

Sutton has been shortlisted in the newcomer category at this year's National Television Awards.

Today's the turn of Hollyoaks-come-Emmerdale actor James Sutton to talk to us about why he should win the newcomer trophy at this year's National Television Awards.

What does it feel like to be nominated?
"It's incredibly flattering considering the talent on Emmerdale, especially in 'Best Newcomer'. Some wonderful people have come in the last year. Alice Coulthard and Lyndon [Ogbourne] have both arrived, Kim Thomson as well - these are seriously high-calibre people so I'm incredibly flattered really."

What do you think of the competition?
"It's very, very strong. Neil from EastEnders - I haven't seen that much of EastEnders - but what I have seen is really strong. Obviously I know Craig quite well and he's immensely talented, I worked with him at drama school and he's always been great. Bronagh I know from Hollyoaks. It's really tough - I wouldn't be able to call it!"

What would it mean to you if you won?
"It would be brilliant. I've been nominated for a few bits and pieces over the last few years and I haven't really won anything - other than the wonderful Digital Spy award of course! But apart from that I haven't won anything so it would be lovely. My mum would love it as well - it would be nice for her to have something on her mantlepiece."

Are you taking her to the awards this year?
"No, I'm not unfortunately. She showed herself up at the Soap Awards, butting in on my interviews and... no I'm joking! She loved it but unfortunately I'm not taking anyone this year."

Why should readers vote for you, then?
"Because it would make my mum very happy if I won (laughs). I've really enjoyed the stuff I've done on Emmerdale and if other people have enjoyed my work then vote for me - that would be rather splendid of them."

What does the future hold for Ryan Lamb?
"He's going to have a lot more to do in the coming months. He's got to come to terms with the fact that he's got this new family now and this father who vanishes - he doesn't really get a chance to talk to him before he disappears. He strikes up a relationship with Will, my new little brother which is really nice and Ryan's got a lot coming up with Nathan. Those two really are at loggerheads. We've got some really exciting stuff coming up together."

Where does he go with his love life?
"Him and Katie start to have a little thing again. He's still sniffing around Katie for a while but I can't really give too much away about that."

Does he build bridges with his mother?
"I don't think he ever forgives her but they do eventually start to open up some communication, but for a long time it's going to be very fraught between the two of them."

Are you sticking with Emmerdale for the foreseeable future?
"Yeah - I'm having an absolute ball. It's honestly the best place to work. The people there are just wonderful and they've made me feel so welcome and Gavin's doing a great job. It feels like we're part of something really quite exciting that's on the up. The viewing figures have been really good the last couple of weeks and I don't want to go anywhere right now."

The other nominees in the newcomer category are all soapy sorts - Hollyoaks' Bronagh Waugh, Corrie's Craig Gazey and EastEnders' Neil McDermott.

Emmerdale actor James Sutton has promised that viewers will be seeing more of his character Ryan Lamb in the coming months.

The 27-year-old told DS on the red carpet at this year's British Soap Awards that there is a "massive" storyline on the horizon for him and his screen family.

He said: "We have massive, massive [stuff] coming up. The back end of this year, me Lyndon Ogbourne, Amanada Donohoe, Alice Coulthard and Sammy [Winward]... there's a massive storyline for all of us."

Speaking of the ITV soap's current state of play, he continued: "Everyone's really, really happy and loving their job. And Gavin's really pleased from speaking to him... There's a real buzz and everyone's really excited and happy... It's a really lovely place to work right now."

Emmerdale's Ryan Lamb is charged with the murder of his father Mark next week after a series of shock discoveries implicate him in the crime. When the police find a gold chain belonging to Ryan at the location where Mark was buried, they haul in the village mechanic for questioning, leaving him confused and angry. To make matters worse, a number of other pieces of evidence soon come to light - including a gun that's buried at the garage. What Ryan doesn't know is that his twisted half-brother Nathan is setting him up - and with the police determined to nail him for the killing, it seems that Nathan's plan is working perfectly. Here, we chat to Ryan's portrayer James Sutton about his character's predicament.

How exactly does the arrest come about?
"Ryan gets completely stitched up. The police have an awful lot of evidence against him, which somebody - who shall remain nameless - planted all over the village and on Ryan's person! Plus, he's got a motive - he punched Mark in the street on the day that Mark got killed and he was in the woods on the night that Mark died. It all looks pretty damning, so they nick him."

How does Ryan react to the arrest?
"He's completely baffled - as are the rest of the village. They can't believe that this nice guy could be capable of murder."

How does Ryan cope under police questioning?
"He gets very, very frustrated and loses his temper a few times. They've just got so much evidence against him that they're convinced he's guilty. Ryan's just confused over the whole thing, so he gets frustrated and a little bit angry, which doesn't really help the situation."

With new evidence coming to light by the day, Ryan's eventually charged with Mark's murder. What happens then?
"He suspects already, but once he's been charged, that's when he realises that he's been completely set up by Nathan! And there's an awful lot to come with this storyline. It will change Ryan indefinitely, I think."

Cain is one of the only people who knows for sure that Ryan's innocent. Is there a chance he could step in and save him?
"Well, as Cain's been getting money from Natasha and Nathan because of the wallet that he found in the woods, he doesn't really want to step in and help Ryan straight away, so no. But he might do eventually…"

Hopefully Ryan won't be sentenced for Mark's murder - so who would you like to see go down for it?
"I think most people would like Nathan to go down for it, because he's a little scumbag! I'm with the majority. They should send Nathan down and give him the electric chair!"

Will Ryan take revenge on Nathan in the future?
"Without a shadow of a doubt, absolutely. I want to be the guy that pulls the trigger and ends Nathan! I want to be the guy that buries Nathan! It would be deserved, I think! I have no doubt that I will have my revenge."

Could you see them ever becoming friends again in the future?
"Me and Lyndon have actually chatted about this and said how cool it would be if they became buddies again, but kind of like evil buddies - this pair of evil brothers who are hellbent on power and madness and just going around systematically screwing over everyone in the village! It would be quite fun, but we'll see. I don't know what Gavin's got planned for us, but I'm sure it will be exciting."

The arrest storyline is a big one for Ryan - but what would you say to people who think your character's been a bit neglected?
"I certainly don't feel neglected. I have been quiet for the past couple of months, but I wouldn't say I'd been neglected. It's just the nature of soap, isn't it? You have a big storyline and then you disappear for a bit. I mean, Ryan had quite a lot with Maisie. He had a little affair with her, and then he found out that Mark was his dad and all that sort of stuff. I certainly don't feel under-used. It's just the nature of soap - you prop up the bar in The Woolpack for a bit, and then you have a storyline. It's absolutely fine."

You've been with Emmerdale for over a year now - have there been any particular highlights for you?
"It's all great! The village where we film is beautiful and an amazing place, it really is lovely. So that kind of is the highlight - walking up the road to the Emmerdale village and just thinking, 'This is where I go to work!' It's quite crazy really. I'm incredibly lucky."

And which actors on the show would you like to have more screen time with?
"I love working with Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain, and Danny Miller, who plays Aaron - I think he's played a blinder in the last few months and I think everyone does. So yeah, I love working with those two at the garage. Hopefully Charley Webb will be back soon so we can have the full set-up there again. It's great fun there and we really buzz off each other, I think, so I'd quite like some more stuff there."

What are your thoughts on Alice Coulthard's decision to quit the role of Maisie?
"Well, she's a really, really, really good actress and I think she's proved that over the last few months. Some of the stuff that she did with finding out that Ryan was her brother was fantastic. She's quite ambitious and I think there's a lot of stuff out there for her. She wants to get back to London and she's getting married soon as well, so I can kind of see why she wants to leave. It's a big loss to the show, but she'll be great."

There's been a few new signings at Emmerdale recently, with the likes of Pauline Quirke and Jake Roche joining the cast. Have you had a chance to meet them yet?
"Yeah, I've met Jake and he's a super lad, a really nice guy. I've met Pauline briefly and she was lovely - that's a great casting; really, really good as she's fantastic."

The British Soap Awards were a bit disappointing for Emmerdale this year…
"A bit?! It was a travesty not to give Danny Miller an award, and you can quote me on that. I'm sure you're sick of hearing this, but to not give that kid an award was just a joke, it really was. But there's not a plot against Emmerdale or anything - obviously we don't get the viewing figures that EastEnders and Corrie get, and they're very strong shows as well. But I think we all felt a little bit frustrated. It's the same with every soap - we all put so much work in, and these stories that we do take an awful lot of effort and a long time to shoot. I think I speak for people at other soaps as well when I say that Danny should have won something. By the same token, I know how strong EastEnders and Corrie were last year. But it would have been nice to have won a couple."

Hollyoaks has had some bad press recently - do you think it can bounce back now that Paul Marquess is in charge?
"Well, I don't like to read bad press about Hollyoaks. I haven't seen it myself so I can't really comment, but from what I've read, it hasn't been up to the high standard that it should be at. I don't know Paul myself, I've never met the guy, but from what I've heard, it seems like it's going in the right direction now. There's some great actors on that show. I know that he's brought in a lot of new characters and I've heard that he's got rid of an awful lot as well. That might be good for the show. A lot of the time when new producers come in, they get called the 'axeman' and get rid of half the cast and bring in new people, but that's kind of part and parcel of it. I genuinely wish him all the best and I hope that Hollyoaks goes from strength to strength, because I had a really great time there. I want to hear nice things about Hollyoaks."

Have you been watching EastEnders now that Bryan Kirkwood's episodes are coming through?
"Yeah, I have. I'm really digging EastEnders at the moment. I'll be honest, I've never really been much of a soap fan because I'm always working or whatever, so I've never really watched that much, but EastEnders really is fab at the moment. I've seen bits of what Lacey's been doing and she's phenomenal. And there's some really exciting stuff coming up on EastEnders as well. A friend of mine has just directed some stuff over there, and from talking to Bryan, they're all really excited - as they should be. I think that EastEnders is going to go from strength to strength under Bryan. He's a top bloke and a great boss. They're really lucky to have him and that show's just going to get better and better and better."

You mentioned in an interview last year that you were keen to start driving - have you started your lessons yet?
"Yes, I have! I'm well on my way. Be careful if you're crossing the road in Leeds! I've been having lessons for quite a while, but only in an automatic because I can't be bothered with a manual. I think I'm going to need a few more lessons, but I want to have passed by October. That would be ideal. I need to do my theory as well, but I just can't be bothered to study! I have tried to pull my finger out a bit, though!"

Here is the interview he gave to Holy Smoke. Its remarkably similar to the one in DS (above). No doubt DS will release snippets of this over the next few days as ''new'' spoilers

Poor innocent Ryan Lamb finds himself the victim of his twisted half-brother Nathan's scheming, when he is arrested and charged with Mark's murder. Here, James Sutton, who plays Ryan, opens up about the storyline and a lot more besides.

How does Nathan frame Ryan?

He buries a shotgun at Ryan's place of work. He takes some jewellery from Ryan and puts it near Mark's body, he puts shotgun residue over Ryan's clothes. Ryan has a motive too because he punched his dad on the day he got killed. He basically stitches him up like a kipper.

Why does he choose Ryan?

Because he hates him. It's sibling rivalry gone a bit too far.

What's going through Ryan's head when he is charged with murder and thrown in a cell?

He's very bemused like the rest of the village. He doesn't understand why he's there and whoever is responsible isn't. He's convinced Nathan did it so he's convinced Nathan should be in there. He's very scared and very bemused.

How long is he locked up for?

Until the trial. They don't give him bail because it's a murder case, so he is in prison for a couple of months.

You must have done lots of filming of prison scenes. How has that been?

Yes, lots of filming. It's been good. There are a couple of new characters in the prison I've got to work with and hang out with. The only visitor I've been getting is Faye so I've been doing a bit with Kim Thomson. It's been cool.

There was a report about Ryan getting a new love interest in the form of Abi Peterson, played by Catherine Tyldesley...

This is true. I don't know if I can tell you anything about that, but yes, there's a woman in the not too distant future.

It all gets quite dark for a while so it's bit of welcome relief, so to speak.

Is Ryan sad about Mark's death?

Not really sad. He's disappointed he never got the chance to sit and talk with his father before he died. He never really knew the guy. He's as shocked as the whole village is. Everyone's got together in light of this tragedy. A couple of days after Mark's body is found, he is accused so doesn't get a chance to grieve really.

What research have you done to prepare for the prison storyline?

I watched The Shawshank Redemption! And they got a lot of people in, a lot of prison officers who have overseen everything and chatted to me. It's been cool.

Ryan must be going through turmoil. Has it been draining to film?

Yeah, it kind of has. I'm depressed all the time. But it's been great to play some different stuff because he's generally an upbeat character. It's great to play downbeat stuff, and angst and tears.

How do you switch off after a long day?

With red wine and my guitar. Lots of music.

Emmerdale chief Gavin Blyth promised we'd see a lot more of Ryan and it sounds like it's happening. Are you pleased?

I don't feel like I've been under-used. I haven't had a massive storyline before but I was involved in a lot of Mark's storyline and Maisie's. I have been busy. But every actor wants a big storyline to get their teeth into. Hopefully this will run and run now. I hope Ryan will get out of prison at some point, then he can get his sweet revenge on his brother.

What will he do to Nathan?

I haven't a clue. Something horrible. I want to be the one to put a bullet in his head if I'm honest. If anyone is going to kill the little b*****d it's got to be me. He's vile. You should meet the actor who plays him. He's even worse!

Seriously, do you get on with Lyndon Ogbourne, who plays Nathan, in real life?

I do. We go out for dinner and drinks quite often. He's a terrible influence on my alcohol intake. But he's a good guy.

We know Alice Coulthard is leaving the role of Maisie. How do you feel about that?

It's a big loss to the show. I think she's proved over the last few months that she's a top actress and any programme would be lucky to have her. Everyone's sad to see her go. She's getting married soon and wants to move back to London with her fiance. There will be a lot of work out there for her and we wish her the best.

Are you going to her wedding?

Yeah, I think most people are. I don't know where it is - somewhere near the coast. It will be lovely. And her fiance is a smashing guy.

Will Ryan miss Maisie?

Yeah, definitely. I'm sure he'll be quite sad to see her go because they've sorted out their problems.

Do you think Ryan and Katie will get back together?

I think they've probably put that to bed. I know that Gavin's got a lot of plans for Katie and I don't think any of it involves me. I don't think they'll get back together. I think she'll have a relationship with someone else in the village.

Have you worked with Pauline Quirke, who has started at Emmerdale?

That's an inspired piece of casting! Look at her CV. I remember seeing her in a prison thing where she played a convict and thinking 'wow, this woman is absolutely phenomenal.' She's at the top of her game, she really is. It's a great coup for the show to get her involved.

I would love to work with her. I am sure I could learn a lot but at the moment I don't know what I'm going to end up doing.

How long will you be in the show for?

I am quite ambitious but I am not someone who has a plan. I'm just really blessed to be working and getting paid to do what I enjoy so as long as they want me here I'll be here, within reason. Another couple of years maybe and we'll see what else is out there. I'm not in any rush to go anywhere.

Hollyoaks, your old place of work, is going through a lot of changes at moment. What do you think of them?

The last thing I want to hear is that Hollyoaks isn't going very well and audience figures aren't very good. I have a lot of love for the place and had a wonderful three years there. I want it to do well. (Series producer) Paul Marquess has come in and it sounds really positive. He's bringing in all these new characters. I'm sure he'll be really good for the show. I just want it to be a success.

Are you still in touch with your old Hollyoaks workmates?

A couple. We see each other at awards shows. I am so busy here and they are in Liverpool, but I've spoken to Kevin Sacre who plays Jake Dean. I'm going to his wedding in Ibiza. He is excited about what the future holds for him.

Emmerdale bosses are reportedly desperate for James Sutton to sign his new contract to remain with the soap.

The Sun reports that Sutton is currently signed to play Ryan Lamb until next March, but the Yorkshire soap chiefs fear that he could become the latest star to quit.

Alice Coulthard (Maisie Wylde), Amanda Donohoe (Natasha Wylde) and Lyndon Ogbourne (Nathan Wylde) have all recently confirmed their exits.

Sutton has reportedly told bosses that he is considering his options after moving from Leeds to a new flat in Liverpool, which he bought when he starred in Hollyoaks.

"Losing one star is an accident - losing four is careless," a source told the paper. "The Wylde family leave over Christmas and New Year. If Ryan goes as well it's a hammer blow to carefully worked-out plans."

They continued: "After the Wylde clan dropped off one-by-one, they started storylining big plans for James's character Ryan, who is massively popular with viewers. The plan was to get him out of jail and back in the village by New Year.

"But that could all change if James doesn't sign up again. He's just not happy in Leeds now he's split with Sammy [Winward]."

The ITV soap is now apparently trying to find a family to replace the Wyldes in Home Farm.

"Home Farm is the centre-piece of Emmerdale," the insider said. "It's a big house which needs a proper dynasty. This is a massive setback and the hunt will be on for a new family."

An Emmerdale spokeswoman reportedly confirmed that Sutton is negotiating his new contract.

Emmerdale star James Sutton is to leave the soap in the spring, it has been announced.

The actor has played the role of mechanic Ryan Lamb on the Yorkshire-based serial since 2009 but is now bowing out to pursue new projects.

In a statement released on Emmerdale's website, Sutton commented: "I've massively enjoyed the last two years playing Ryan and been blessed to have worked with a group of such talented and supportive actors.

"I feel that Ryan's storylines have drawn to a natural conclusion and although I'll be sad to say goodbye, I'm excited about what the future holds."

He added: "Having trained in theatre I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots and exploring new opportunities."

Meanwhile, Emmerdale's executive producer Steve November said: "James has been a much valued member of the cast and we wish him all the best for the future."

Ryan was introduced to the soap in June 2009 and soon became embroiled in the drama surrounding the Wylde clan, who have all since departed the village.

Sutton's screen mother Kim Thomson (Faye) is also leaving Emmerdale this year.

He could go to Corrie or Deadenders.

More likey Deadenders as they generally employ folk for their totty factor as opposed to percieved acting abilities

James Sutton has revealed his reasons for bowing out of Emmerdale, explaining that he wants to "get cracking" with new career projects.

The actor's character Ryan Lamb leaves the village in next Tuesday's episode, following in the footsteps of mum Faye (Kim Thomson), who also recently departed.

Ryan has been a less prominent fixture on screen in recent months after the high drama surrounding the Wyldes and the Lambs came to an end in late 2010.

Speaking to Holy Soap about his Emmerdale exit, Sutton commented: "I was thinking about it last year. Lyndon Ogbourne and Amanda Donohoe left and Kim Thomson said she was thinking about leaving, so my whole family set-up in the village was disappearing.

"I came from Hollyoaks before that, so I've done five-and-a-half years on soaps now. I'm privileged to have had that training and experience, but I'm 28 and I need to know what else is out there. I want to see if a theatre fancies giving me a job, or perhaps do a drama or film.

"I have a new agent, showreel and headshots, so I'm feeling really positive. I've never been that career-minded - I've bumbled along and always felt I got a bit lucky - but now I can put the work in and get cracking with my career."

Ryan's final storyline sees him decide to move away after getting caught up in Cain Dingle's harassment of ex-partner Charity Tate, which leads to some awkward questions from the police.

Sutton added: "The producers are leaving the door open for me, which is very sweet of them. They're not killing my character. When Ryan starts getting into trouble with Cain and the police come to interview him he thinks, 'You know what, I need to get away. I can't be around Cain, he's a terrible influence'. It's Ryan's choice to leave. He packs his bags and heads off into the sunset."

Former Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star James Sutton is busy launching a new venture after setting up his own pop-up acting company Broken Leg Workshops.

The 29-year-old, best known for his soap roles as Ryan Lamb and John Paul McQueen, is offering a unique alternative to drama classes with an emphasis on developing the skills needed for acting in front of a camera.

Each two-day workshop aims to provide students with a thorough insight into the world of television acting, as they receive advice from a team of professional actors and get the opportunity to perform in front of industry experts such as casting directors and agents.

James recently caught up with Digital Spy for a chat about the project, life after soapland and his future acting ambitions.

How did the idea for Broken Leg Workshops come about?
"I decided on the idea with my friend and business partner a couple of months ago. We've always spoken about going into business together, and we were originally going to open up a drama school.

"But logistically that would have been a bit of a nightmare with overheads, renting a whole building and staffing it. So about two months ago, we made the decision to do some workshops, and it's grown from there."

Who are the workshops open to?
"They're absolutely open to everyone. Obviously if you've got experience that's going to be a plus, but everyone is welcome and we're really excited at the prospect of discovering people who nobody else has seen before.

"We've got casting directors on board, and these people are actually casting for dramas, films and TV now. We also have professional agents who are looking for clients. So the chance that people will actually get work and representation out of this is really exciting for us."

You've got lots of recognisable faces from soap involved, including Danny Miller, Catherine Tyldesley, Mark Charnock and Jessica Fox. How easy was it to get them all on board with the idea?
"Well, the great thing about actors is that they like talking about acting! It's also nice to pass on what you've learnt and give advice. All of the people I've asked are people who I really respect and really admire as actors - I look up to them.

"I just said, 'Do you fancy coming in and doing a bit of teaching?', and all of them immediately said yes. I think they're all really looking forward to it. It's a nice change for them because most of them are soap actors with a 9-5 day job, so this will be something different for them."

What kind of a response have you had since announcing this venture?
"It's been really positive and we've had tons of interest. We're already selling quite a lot of places on the first course, which is fantastic as we only announced it a short time ago. As soon as the website went live, we had loads of people ringing and emailing us.

"I think it's because there's nothing else like this in the country. Obviously there are workshops and drama classes which teach acting for TV and film, but as far as we know, there are none that are taught by actors who are recognisable faces working now on television.

"We're actively encouraging our guest lecturers to get involved and act with the students in the workshops, so it should be a really lovely opportunity to work with people who you've watched on TV. Everyone has been really positive and really excited about it."

How are the preparations going for your first workshop in Liverpool at the end of July?
"They're going great! I've been busy writing the lesson plans, which have been taking up all of my time at the moment. I'm spending my days surrounded by pieces of paper and marker pens, trying to fit everything in - because there's an awful lot of criteria that we want to get through.

"Beyond that, our next one will be in Manchester. We're just finding the venue at the moment, but that'll probably be in the second or third week of August. But the wonderful thing is that we can go anywhere - we're not stuck in one location. We've already spoken to people in Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham. Eventually we would like to go into London too."

Are you still auditioning for roles yourself?
"Yes, I'm still acting, auditioning and going for meetings. I've actually had quite a busy year already because I've had quite a few things airing. So I'm still doing that, but it's nice to have something else to focus on as well.

"I think for me, it takes the pressure off a little bit when it comes to auditions and really needing to get the job. Now I've got this project as well - so it's not taking anything away from my acting career, but it's nice to have something else to focus on."

As you mentioned, you've appeared on quite a few high-profile shows this year including Holby City, Scott and Bailey and Bedlam. How has life after Emmerdale compared to what you'd expected?
"It's been pretty much what I expected, to be honest. I'm not going to pretend that it's not difficult coming out of a really regular job like Emmerdale. I was acting every day there, and there's not many actors who can say that they're acting on a daily basis. So it was a big decision to leave that behind, but one that I'm really glad that I made.

"I've had some good jobs since I've left, and I've been auditioning for films recently. That's the direction that I'd like to go into now - films and one-off dramas. I'm a jobbing actor again, which is great, because the reason that I got into the industry was to play different characters and do different jobs."

Is theatre still your first love?
"Most definitely. I was actually offered a couple of tours at the end of last year that I had to turn down for various reasons, but if something came up that was right for me, I'd definitely consider it."

After seeing people like Barry Sloane do so well, would you consider looking for work in the US?
"Yeah, definitely. I am going to go over to LA when the time is right - I think every actor has to go at some point. Barry has worked incredibly hard and done fantastically well, so there is work out there, but I'm not in a rush.

"That's not to say that I don't have the ambition, it's just that I know a lot of actors go over there perhaps naively and with rose-tinted glasses. It's incredibly competitive over there - perhaps even more so than it is over here."

Four years on, how do you look back at your time on Hollyoaks?
"I look back on it so fondly and I have nothing but great memories there. It was a wonderful time for me as an actor, because as much as you learn from drama school, the stuff that you learn on the job is second to none.

"It was a real baptism of fire for me to be thrown straight into such a big storyline which got so much attention. I feel very proud and very privileged to have worked on that storyline, and also to have been a part of Hollyoaks at that time. It was a really, really lovely experience and I made some great friends there."

Do you look back on Emmerdale as fondly?
"Definitely. Emmerdale was a different ballpark, to be honest - the actors there are phenomenally talented. Not to take anything away from Hollyoaks, but Emmerdale was a big step up and you suddenly find yourself working alongside people who you've seen on TV for years.

"The cast members there have such an ease with how they work, and they're so giving as actors - they made me feel incredibly welcome and really helped me. And working for Gavin Blyth was just a joy - that man was the most passionate, thoughtful, honest and caring producer that we could have asked for."

With Hollyoaks in particular, people often ask whether you'd go back. Is that flattering, or is it annoying to always be asked the same question?!
"I get asked pretty much every day on Twitter if I'm going back to Hollyoaks, and it is flattering. I don't think there's room for me there, to be honest - they have a huge cast now and they have great storylines. I know that they had a serial killer storyline which was very well received, and I know Emmett Scanlan and Kieron Richardson also had a wonderful storyline together.

"It's a great show and if the storyline was right, the time was right and they wanted me to go and do something, I'd certainly consider it. But like I say, they have a very big cast, so I'm not sure they'd want another actor coming on board right now!"

You've been busy doing some charity work as well, haven't you?
"Yeah, I've been supporting Danny Miller's charity Once Upon A Smile. It's such a wonderful charity - Danny, Daniel Jillings and the whole team work phenomenally hard. They're always doing events and they have their football team too. I'd play more of an active part in the team if I was any good at football! (Laughs) On the odd occasion when I've played in the last couple of years, I've realised that actually I'm rubbish and my talent has left me behind!

"But I'll do anything I can - I did Total Wipeout for them, and we've got an event coming up in Manchester on July 15 called Viva Las Vegas, which Danny Miller is hosting, so that'll be really fun. I'm really looking forward to working more with them."

Broken Leg Workshops will hold its first two day course in Liverpool on July 28 and 29 - visit the website for full details.
