EastEnders star Ricky Norwood has experienced a life-changing 12 months after making his debut in the role of Walford joker Arthur 'Fatboy' Chubb last January. A year after his first appearance on Albert Square, Ricky is now in the running for the 'Best Newcomer' prize at the National Television Awards, which take place in London next week. In the first of a series of NTA interviews, DS recently gave Ricky a call to hear about his time at EastEnders so far and why he deserves your vote.

How does it feel to be in the running for 'Best Newcomer'?
"It's a bit of a shock, but it's a great honour! It's amazing. When we add up Fatboy's time last year, it doesn't add up to a lot, but he's made an impact in the time that he has had. The fact that it's been recognised by the general public and my peers is absolutely amazing to me - it's quite baffling, but it's great!"

What would it mean to you to win the award?
"Awards are a recognition of all the work that you've done in the last year, and for me personally, not only the last year but every year that I've been training, working in plays and trying to build up my repertoire as an actor. It would be a great culmination of all that stuff. Also, it's a National Television Award - it's not a Soap Award. I love all the soap award ceremonies, but this is across TV in general - across the whole spectrum. To have been nominated for something like that is just gobsmacking, really! It's hard to describe."

You're up against Paula Lane from Corrie, Olga Fedori from Holby City and Marc Silcock from Emmerdale - what do you think of the competition?
"I think everybody's got a chance. I wish them as much luck as people are wishing me. I know how it is to be a newcomer coming into an established show and trying to make a mark, so I definitely wish them all luck. I haven't met them before, but I'm looking forward to meeting them on the night."

If you had to give your plea for why people should vote for you, what would you say?
"All I would say is vote if Fatboy has made you laugh or chuckle, if Fatboy has surprised you or if he's changed your opinions of him. A lot of people say to me that when Fatboy first came into EastEnders, people didn't like him. But over a period of time, some people's views have changed and they've said, 'Actually, I do like him!' So if Fatboy has changed your opinion between the first time he showed up and now, I'd say vote for me! But all of us are strong candidates and I wouldn't be totally devastated if they didn't!"

Are there any particular scenes featuring Fatboy that you'd like people to bear in mind as they decide who to vote for?
"Well, my most significant week on EastEnders so far has been when me and a couple of the other younger characters went to the woods. We basically had a whole week of storyline, and that was my first full week - appearing in Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday's episodes. I got to play so many different emotions in that week - Fatboy even got his first kiss in the woods. Also, recently there was a scene with Kat and Alfie where Fatboy and Mercy brought them a cake, and you could kind of see that sensitive and caring side of Fatboy. I think Fatboy is trying to improve himself at all times. But my favourite week so far was when I was in the woods - we all had a really good time and I really enjoyed those episodes."

Are you looking forward to letting your hair down at the NTA ceremony itself?
"Absolutely! I'll be able to let my hair down and maybe even take off my shoes, because my house is not that far away! (Laughs)"

Do you think EastEnders is in with a good chance for the 'Best Serial Drama' prize this year?
"Absolutely. EastEnders are always forward-thinking, they always push the boundaries and they always outdo the previous year. We've had an absolutely great year - we had the live episode, the great episodes where Peggy and Stacey left, and we've got some really talented people within the cast. Being here for the year that I have, I've learned a hell of a lot and I continue to learn loads."

Have you enjoyed the chance to show a different side to Fatboy recently - like in the scene with Kat that you mentioned?
"I think Fatboy will always be the joker of the pack, but it's just great that when I have scenes with Dot, or scenes like the one with Kat, that I get to show that different side. It's good to show that he's not just all about the slang and not all about the hype. Fatboy is an intelligent character - he knows when he's putting on the slang and he knows that's a front. When he speaks to Dot or Mercy on their level, you see that different side to him and the whole 'street' thing drops quickly. Instead, you see the boy that he really is - the sensitive boy that wants to be caring and wants to look after people. But he thinks that in the street and in East London, that isn't credible and he might get beat up or slagged off for acting like a wuss. So that's why he puts on that front. But I love surprising the audience, so the more they give me scenes with June Brown or with Jessie, the better - it's great for me and great for the character."

What's in store for Fatboy in 2011?
"There's going to be a lot more from me this year. I'd say just keep it glued! I think there'll be more sensitive times, but I do like surprising the audience, so I'll try to leave it as a surprise. But there is plenty of stuff coming up for him this year - keep your eyes peeled because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I hope people will enjoy it when it turns up."

It's been a big 12 months for you - starting out on EastEnders: E20, moving over to the main show, and now you're up for 'Best Newcomer' - how would you sum it all up?
"It's been unbelievable, really. The journey that the character has been through and the journey that I've been through myself have both been so amazing. Obviously I have worked before, doing plays, a little bit of hosting and also dancing, but it's nowhere near as high profile as EastEnders. I think we've had a great year and to be there now is unbelievable. It's a great honour that they've kept me on and that they continue to keep me on."

Do you think there'll ever be a time where we know your character purely as Arthur rather than as Fatboy?
"I don't know - I like the fact that you can see Fatboy but you can also see a bit of Arthur. Whether things will change, I don't know. The name of Fatboy has kind of stuck - one day I might turn into Arthur, but I think people will always know me as Fatboy. With EastEnders, you never know what might happen!"

Do you enjoy getting the chance to work with June Brown?
"It's an honour and a privilege, let me tell you. She is literally a legend and when I'm working with her on set, she is meticulous. She knows where the teapots and teacups should be, she knows why a table shouldn't be in a certain place and she knows about the lighting. It's great to work with and learn from somebody like that. I love every single scene I get with her. I don't know who thought up the idea of putting Fatboy and Dot together, but it's a great mix - two totally different generations and two different speech patterns but they still find a way. June has done so much for me in terms of the learning environment at work but also for the character, as you see a different side to Fatboy again when he's with her. June is a screen legend and I think she should be getting a Lifetime Achievement Award!"

Could there ever be a proper romance for Fatboy and Mercy?
"From Fatboy's point of view, he'd like there to be! They've always been good friends and had each other's backs but whether that will develop into a romance, I really don't know. Fatboy's always been the one who's chasing her, so I don't know whether she might buckle at one point and look at him without the older sister or parent kind of view - because that's how Mercy is with him. Whether she can let that go and finally fall for Fatboy, I don't know! But I would say fingers crossed, and I know Fatboy is going to be trying so that should be fun to watch!"

Will you have any involvement in the third series of E20?
"I know they've got some new writers in for it and they're working really, really hard - and I think series three will more than likely be the best season that they're going to come out with. From the little whispers that I'm hearing and who's going to be writing, I think they've got some good ideas. I don't know whether I'm in it as much as the first and second series, because I know that EastEnders want me to be around for the main show during the period of filming for E20. I don't know whether I'll get to be in it, but I'll always love E20 and I'll always be grateful for the opportunity they gave to me."

Are there any EastEnders cast members who you're keen to work with more?
"I love Lindsey Coulson, who plays Carol - she is amazing. Also Jake Wood who plays Max - I think he's an amazing actor. We've got some really talented people in the cast, so I'm always learning when I'm doing the scenes. Because of Fatboy's age and the people he mixes with, he sometimes doesn't get the opportunity to mix with the elders on the Square - but I'd love to work with Lindsey and with Jake. Also Tameka, who plays Kim - I think that her and Fatboy would get on so well, whether as mates or in a relationship. Fatboy and Kim are such brash and brassy characters - they love a laugh, so I think pairing them up would be a comedy goldmine.

"Also, Gillian Wright who plays Jean Slater is an awesome actress - I've seen her do some stuff that has taken my breath away sometimes. And then there's people who don't get the credit that they deserve sometimes, like Patsy Palmer. She's been amazing throughout Billie's death storyline and all the Whitney stuff. Sometimes when people are so used to someone being there, they don't recognise how amazing they are!"

EastEnders fans are to be introduced to Fatboy's father Ashley Chubb later this year, it has been confirmed.

Bosses at the BBC soap are currently casting for the character, who will make his debut on screen in the spring.

Ashley's arrival in Walford comes as he faces problems in his personal life and comes to stay with his son. However, how Fatboy will react to the news that his dad's life has been turned upside down remains to be seen.

An EastEnders spokesperson said: "We are currently casting for Fatboy's dad, Ashley Chubb, who will appear on screen in spring."

A show insider added: "Fatboy has been a real hit with viewers and the bosses have decided that it's now time to bring in his dad so people can see what Fatboy is really all about."

Fatboy has been on screen since January 2010, but little is currently known about his background, family and upbringing.

Meanwhile, Ricky Norwood - who plays the character - is in the running for the 'Best Newcomer' prize at this year's National Television Awards, which take place in London on Wednesday.

EastEnders star Ricky Norwood has admitted that his character Arthur 'Fatboy' Chubb is unable to switch off his romantic feelings for best friend Mercy Olubunmi.

The relationship between the pair is further explored in next week's episodes of the Walford soap as Fatboy gets jealous over her budding romance with Seb, who was introduced to the show in March as Lauren Branning's college friend.

In a further twist, Fatboy's father Ashley will also try to get Mercy into trouble in the coming days by spitefully informing the UK border agency that she has outstayed her visa.

Last week, reports suggested that the situation will reach a climax later this month as Fatboy apparently proposes to Mercy on the day of the royal wedding.

In an interview with TV Choice, Norwood confirmed: "Fatboy needs to do something to catch Mercy's attention. When he does, it's with a big gesture to make sure she'll still be around.

"I do look at his storylines and think, 'What are you doing? Leave Mercy alone, she has a boyfriend!' But once he cares about someone that's it, so can there ever be a happy ending for Fatboy and Mercy? I don't know. This is EastEnders, after all."

The actor, whose Walford career began on internet spinoff EastEnders: E20, also spoke of his joy at winning the 'Best Newcomer' prize at the National Television Awards in January.

He said: "When I joined E20 it was like the first year of school. I got through and graduated to the big show. The award was the crowning glory!"

Ricky Norwood has revealed that he would like his EastEnders character Fatboy to go ahead with his desperate plan to marry best friend Mercy Olubunmi.

Fatboy proposes to Mercy in the soap's special royal wedding episode at the end of the month, desperate to keep her in the country after the authorities try to deport her.

In an interview with Inside Soap, Norwood confirmed that he is keen for Fatboy and Mercy (Bunmi Mojekwu) to make it down the aisle as the storyline continues.

He commented: "Soap weddings are legendary, so it would be great to have one. I'd be very happy if Fatboy and Mercy's big day popped up in the 2012 EastEnders annual!"

Meanwhile, asked how Mercy reacts to Fatboy's surprise proposal, the actor said: "She's shocked! Mercy thinks he's lost his marbles, but soon comes round to the idea. Fatboy reckons that this isn't about his feelings, it's all about keeping her in the UK. Of course, he's also hoping that if she stays, maybe she'll end up liking him in the way he likes her."

However, Norwood also warned that Fatboy may be heading for problems if he goes ahead with the risky plan to fool immigration officials.

"You can get into a lot of trouble for this stuff," he said. "But all Fatboy can think is, 'How can I save Mercy?' She's the girl he loves."

Ricky Norwood has predicted that his EastEnders character Fatboy Chubb will head down a darker path if Mercy Olubunmi leaves him heartbroken.

The Walford pair will tie the knot in next Monday's episode as Fatboy goes ahead with his desperate plan to keep his best friend in the country.

However, as show bosses recently confirmed that Mercy is due to depart screens in July, her union with Fatboy is likely to be short-lived.

Speaking to All About Soap about what Mercy's exit could mean for Fatboy, Norwood commented: "I honestly don't know what's going to happen in the future. But if Mercy does leave Fatboy heartbroken, I think that he's going to stop being the nice guy all the time.

"He'd probably really kick out and do bad things that he wouldn't normally do."

Fatboy's marriage follows an immigration drama for Mercy as the UK Border Agency have threatened to deport her for outstaying her visa.

Discussing what happens after the wedding, Norwood said: "It's very awkward. Fatboy feels that the wedding is going to solve everything, but all it does is create more problems.

"It's hard for them to even be friends because they've told all these people that they're a genuine couple, so they have to keep up the façade. But because it's not the type of relationship they've had before, it's not easy for them."

Next week's episodes also see actor Colin Mace make a reappearance as Fatboy's father Ashley.

EastEnders star Ricky Norwood has hinted that his character Fatboy Chubb could soon feature in a love triangle storyline.

Fatboy grows closer to troubled Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) in this week's episodes as he tries to protect her from evil pimp Rob Grayson during their holiday in Southend.

However, speaking to Inside Soap, Norwood admitted that Albert Square newcomer Tyler Moon could thwart Fatboy's chances of a romance with Whitney in the coming months.

"It's great to be involved with a character like Whitney," the actor explained. "There will be lots of ifs and buts when it comes to their relationship and things won't be straightforward for them.

"Fatboy likes Whitney and cares for her, but with Tyler on the scene as well, he has a bit of competition!"

Norwood also praised Tony Discipline, who plays Tyler, and his screen brother Matt Lapinskas (Anthony) for their professionalism on set.

"They're such lovely boys. They came on board to work hard, not just get pictures outside the studios with the fans," he said. "We love having them here and they love being here - they bring something really fresh to the show."

EastEnders' Ricky Norwood has said that he hopes his character Fatboy will find a steady girlfriend.

Speaking on the National Television Awards red carpet, the actor stated his belief that his alter ego's kind nature means he deserves to find love.

He told What's on TV: "It'd be lovely if a girl came along and was there for him.

"Fatboy's the one who will always run to someone's rescue, so it'd be nice for someone to run to his rescue one day."

Norwood also revealed that the public's view of Fatboy has changed significantly since he arrived in Albert Square in 2010.

"It's been an amazing turnaround," he added. "When I first came in people used to say to me, 'I don't like you on my screen!'

"But now people say to me, 'You know what, when I first saw you I didn't like you, but now I love Fatboy'."

Fatboy, whose real name is Arthur Chubb, has previously had relationships with Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and Mercy Olubunmi (Bunmi Mojekw

EastEnders star Shona McGarty has admitted that she would have loved a happy ending for her character Whitney Dean and Fatboy Chubb.

The pair have been in a relationship for some time, but Thursday night's episode will see Whitney finally tell Fatboy that she only sees him as a friend.

In contrast, Whitney has developed strong feelings for Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline) since his arrival on Albert Square last year.

However, McGarty told This Morning today: "As a viewer of EastEnders - and I love EastEnders, I've watched it for years - I would personally think that Whitney should go for Fatboy, just because he's so lovely and he genuinely cares.

"For Whitney to go with Tyler now is just a risk to take. She doesn't know where it's going to go."

McGarty said that Whitney's views on the love triangle are very different, as she feels she made a mistake by getting romantically involved with Fatboy (Ricky Norwood).

She explained: "I think Whitney loves him as a friend. I think she always loved him as a friend, but just got a bit confused after everything that had happened to her. She needed a shoulder to cry on."

EastEnders continues on Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.

A blind man could see she was always going to end up with the "bad boy" , and when she does go with him, it will not last as Tyler is not a relationship sort of guy. It will end in tears for whitney , but she will only have herself to blame.

I think the writing is kind of realistic though don't people sometimes make wrong decisions? I think Whitney felt that Fat boy was smothering her and is kind of boring. I just hope Fat Boy can MOVE ON from Whitney and she regrets her decision in dumping him. Whitney was cruel to Fat Boy using the guy when she clearly wasn't in love with him.

EastEnders star Ricky Norwood has called on producers to revive Stacey Slater.

The actor, who plays Fatboy on the BBC soap, believes Lacey Turner should reprise her role as the much-loved Albert Square resident.

When asked whether he would like to see a character return in the future, he firstly suggested: "I'd love to see the return of Stacey Slater, I thought she was amazing."

Norwood continued: "Peggy Mitchell was also a great bundle of energy. I'd love to see Derek Branning back from the dead! Jamie Foreman is one of the best actors I've worked alongside."

The star also set out his desire for Fatboy to have more scenes with Dot Branning and the Masood family.

"I would always love more time with the Masoods. I'd love more time with Dot Branning," he added. "I love her to pieces. June [Brown] is meticulous. She knows her job inside out.

"She even knows where the teapot should be and why it shouldn't be where it is right now. She's helped me a lot."

EastEnders continues tomorrow (January 24) at 7.30pm on BBC One.

EastEnders star Ricky Norwood has been suspended from the soap for two months after reportedly being videoed smoking cannabis.

Show bosses announced the decision today (April 1) after meeting with the actor following weekend tabloid reports.

An EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy: "Ricky Norwood has been suspended from the show for a period of two months with immediate effect.

"In addition, Ricky would like to apologise to EastEnders' viewers for any offence caused and for bringing the show into disrepute."

Norwood hit the headlines on Sunday (March 30) as details emerged of a video which allegedly shows him smoking cannabis and performing a sex act during a Skype chat.

The video was reportedly filmed recently and captured by a woman who the 28-year-old had met online.

Norwood has been appearing on EastEnders as Arthur 'Fatboy' Chubb since 2010. He won the Most Popular Newcomer prize at the National Television Awards in 2011 for his portrayal of the character.

Fatboy's latest storyline has seen him comforting Albert Square favourite Dot Branning (June Brown) following the death of her wayward son Nick.

EastEnders star Ricky Norwood is leaving the show after nearly six years in the role of Fatboy Chubb. :(

The actor will depart the BBC soap at the end of his current contract after producers decided to write out the character of Fatboy.

Norwood will film his final scenes within the next few weeks, but bosses are currently keeping quiet about when and how Fatboy will leave Albert Square.

An EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy: "We can confirm that Ricky will be leaving EastEnders. We wish him all the best for the future."

A show insider added: "Ricky is a great guy and very popular on set. He's leaving the show as it's the end of Fatboy's storyline, but everyone wishes him well for the future."

Fatboy and Donna in a recent EastEnders episode

Norwood first appeared on EastEnders in early 2010, featuring in the main show and its online spinoff E20.

He enjoyed early success with his portrayal of fun-loving Fatboy, winning the Best Newcomer prizes at the Inside Soap Awards in 2010 and National Television Awards in 2011.

In April 2014, Norwood was suspended from EastEnders for two months for improper conduct, although it's understood that there is no link between the past suspension and the much more recent decision to write out Fatboy.

Fatboy's storylines have included his romances with Mercy Olubunmi, Poppy Meadow and Denise Fox. He also shares a strong friendship bond with Albert Square legend Dot Branning and has supported her through many of her own dramas.

:( Are they actually trying to get rid of Dot? Who will she have left?

DTC needs to stop sacking everyone, this is getting silly now. Perfectly good characters have been dispatched to make way for failures like Les, Claudette and Vincent. Fatboy was probably a limited character, but I question where both Dot and Donna will be without him. As Nancy said the other night, she doesn't really fit in and doesn't have anyone else her own age.

It wouldn't be so bad if this wasn't the latest in a long line. Change is needed sometimes but he's thrown more out this year than he did at the beginning of his tenure (most of whom were understandable.)

Yes, absolutely. Of course we don't know exactly what Fatboy's leaving story will be, but Liam's was one of the most ridiculous stories ever to come out of Walford. He was strongly opposed to letting Max (or anyone come to that) take the fall for Bobby, but now he's gone that's all just been conveniently forgotten about.

Yes it was a horrific death, especially for someone with severe claustrophobia. Another reason the episode left a bad taste in my mouth.

Did Vincent crush the car after seeing the body? Ronnie & co were obviously clueless; surely they would have looked if the car was still intact?

Me too. He's been a lovely character with a few little dalliances that have made EE a little more interesting. His interaction with Mrs B has been lovely, I am sure she will miss him very much too.

No-one actually dies in Eastenders. There is always a chance they will be brought back to life with some outrageously ridiculous story. Or, it could all have been a dream Vincent had in the shower.....

If you're still not over Fatboy's grisly death on EastEnders last Boxing Day, it will "definitely" haunt Vincent Hubbard.

Fatboy (Ricky Norwood) was killed in horrific circumstances after he was kidnapped and locked in a car boot overnight in a case of mistaken identity. He was already dead in the boot before the car was crushed, possibly from a heart attack out of fear.

Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) was to blame for the mix-up as she'd arranged for her enemy Vincent to be sent to the car crusher instead.

Speaking to Yahoo, Vincent actor Richard Blackwood teased that Fatboy's death will continue to haunt his character.

"EastEnders don't do anything half-arsed. They've thought it through," he explained. "It definitely will come back and haunt [Vincent], I can say that much… there's no way that it wouldn't.

"You just have to think of the lies he's had to tell since then, he's already feeling guilty as it is. Knowing EastEnders as I do, they won't leave it like that."

Blackwood also admitted that it's tough keeping story secrets from his inquisitive family, adding: "Your family is the first to come up to you and be like, 'We're family, there's no problem here, tell us'. And it's like, 'Why are you so eager to know?' and they say, 'I'm your mum, I should know!'

"That's not part of mum duty, you just need to know I'm doing well in life. But my mum likes to push the boundaries, 'I'm your mum, I should know first'. That stops when I'm 18, I'm 43 now, you don't need to know anything! It's surreal."

Nothing at all would surprise me , Claudette supposedly managed to escape unassisted , pushing up nailed down floorboards and then fixing them back, returned in the same dress dry cleaned , with hardly a scratch on her. Bruising round her neck , I don't think was even followed up by a police visit . All within a couple of days !!!:wall:

Yes, apparently he finds Den and they meet up with Reg Groves and they all decide to return to the Square with Nick Cotton.

FLATBOY ...... yeah the bloke should of won over that human delinquent dross Steve aka Bear.

We only have the statement of one bod that he be brown bread and someone in a car crusher would be hard to identity visually, plus no one has even raised an eyebrow about where he went and why.

Ricky Norwood has revealed that he thinks his ‘EastEnders’ character Fatboy could potentially make a comeback - despite the fact he was killed off last Christmas.

The dramatic festive episodes saw Fatboy accidentally sent to his death by Ronnie Mitchell, and though we didn’t see his body, we got a pretty good impression of the state of things when Vincent Hubbard did

I'd say that's more wishful thinking on Ricky Norwood's part than a spoiler. :p

If DTC was still running the show I might think it a possibility. However, new boss Sean O'Connor is taking EE back to basics and away from sensationalism so I'm afraid I think it's very unlikely to happen.

A long-time EastEnders secret could finally be about to explode, as the soap might have hinted that it will revisit Fatboy's grisly death.

In last night's episode, Dot Cotton (June Brown) asked Vincent Hubbard (Richard Blackwood) about Fatboy's whereabouts.

"Have you heard from him lately?" she asked. "I ain't had a postcard for ages."

Vincent replied: "Um, no. No, I haven't. I can see if I can find out how he's doing."

"It would be nice to hear from him," Dot said.

Unknown to Dot and nearly everyone else in Walford, Fatboy – played by Ricky Norwood – was actually killed off last December in an awful case of mistaken identity.

Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) arranged for Vincent to be sent to the car crusher – but the hired men targeted the wrong person.

Vincent rushed to save Fatboy and stopped the car from being crushed, but Fatboy was already dead when the car boot was opened.

Vincent kept the truth from Ronnie, but that may change – especially since Ronnie is leaving Albert Square in the near future.

Could Ronnie's much-hyped exit storyline involve her uncovering the truth at last?
