Over on EastEnders, there's a surprise proposal on the way next month as Darren pops the question to Jodie.

However, there's trouble on the way before the big moment takes place as the pair have a massive row when Darren loses his job at the car lot. Both soon realise that they're sad to be on bad terms with each other - but neither wants to make the first move towards a reconciliation.

During a heart-to-heart with Abi, Darren tells her how much he still cares for Jodie. Suddenly, Jodie walks in having overheard him - before Darren shocks her by proclaiming his love, getting down on bended knee and asking the big question…

A Walford source commented: "With all the recent ups and downs the couple have had, Darren fears he has lost Jodie for good. Desperate to win her back, he proposes. Will there be a Walford summer wedding and how will Vanessa feel about her young daughter getting engaged?"

31st Jan

Shirley pays a visit to Phil at the hospital and informs him that she won't marry him. A defensive Phil insists that, in that case, they should end their relationship. Shirley then wastes little time before telling the women of Walford that she rejected Phil's proposal. Glenda is among those who hear the news and she makes her excuses before leaving. Over at the Beales', Jane encourages Ian to visit Phil and he reluctantly agrees to go to the hospital. While there, he tries to make amends with his arch-rival. Glenda is next to pay a visit to Phil and she winds him up over his failed proposal. However, Phil seems to have had enough of Glenda - telling her that it's over between them and prompting her to storm off.

Later, at the Beales', Jane and Tanya tell Shirley that she should accept Phil's proposal - while Denise makes a remark about Shirley being scared. Shirley is then spurred into action and she returns to the hospital to ask Phil why he proposed in the first place. Phil concedes that he was in a desperate situation at the time but truly wanted to marry her. Shirley is carrying a bag and Phil fears that it means she's leaving him - but he soon discovers that it's full of clean clothes that she's brought in for him. A happy moment for the pair then follows as Phil gets down on one knee to propose properly - and Shirley finally accepts.

Meanwhile, Max and Jack are clueless over the fact that Darren has sabotaged their costly relaunch of the car lot by not sending out the invitations. Darren has a change of heart, however, and tries to salvage the situation by contacting some clients at the last minute. When Max and Jack remark upon the poor turnout at the party, Darren vows to bring over some of their clients within the hour. However, the people who he brings along are only locals who are hoping for a free drink, leaving Max and Jack unimpressed. Vanessa and Tanya soon arrive and Vanessa is unhappy over Jodie's revealing promo outfit. After Vanessa confronts Max over the matter, the disastrous event is brought to an early end. Later, Jack calls a few clients and is shocked to discover that nobody had received an invite. A confrontation follows and Darren is sacked. Darren goes on to blame Jodie for the loss of his job, and - sick of being snapped at by her boyfriend - she decides to end their relationship.

Elsewhere, Whitney loses her pitch at the market after failing to pay rent; an unexpected face returns to Albert Square much to Kat and Alfie's distress; and Janine comes up with a money-making plan after discovering Whitney's news.

1st Feb

Michael has arrived at The Vic and he wants to see his son, but Alfie has to break the news that the baby has died. Alfie then leaves Kat and Michael alone to talk, and Michael can't believe that Kat didn't let him know. In a state of shock, Michael leaves the pub, while Kat heads out for a walk. Across the Square, Ronnie worries that there is something wrong with 'James' and takes him to the hospital, but she's reassured that everything is fine. When Ronnie returns to the Square, she spots that Kat is waiting for her. Ronnie tries to avoid Kat but this proves futile and the pair end up in the café together. During a heart-to-heart, Kat says that Ronnie understands her in a way that Alfie doesn't and confesses that Michael was the father of her child. Later, Kat returns home to Alfie.

At the same time, Jack is happy to see his old mate Michael back on the Square and the pair head off to the club together. While there, the pair talk about Tommy's death and how hard things have been for Ronnie since she gave birth. At the end of the evening, Jack brings Michael back to the flat and Ronnie is horrified at the arrival of Tommy's father.

Meanwhile, Janine and Whitney pay a visit to the R&R, where a man named David showers Whitney with attention. Later, during a private moment with Janine, it becomes clear that David thinks both women are prostitutes. Janine tries to warn Whitney about the misunderstanding, but before she can do so, Whitney gives David her number and suggests that they move elsewhere. Janine tries once again to get Whitney to leave it and come home, but she refuses. Later, back at the flat, Whitney tidies her bedroom in preparation for some fun with David. Alone with David, Janine informs him that Whitney is working and it will cost £50, so David hands over the cash before heading to the bedroom with an unaware Whitney…

Elsewhere, Darren and Jodie are both distraught about their break-up but it seems that neither wants to take the first step towards a reconciliation. Later, Jodie is devastated to see Darren kissing another girl at the R&R.

Note the change from the usual schedule

As Michael sleeps, Ronnie searches his wallet but fails to find anything of interest. Ronnie is keen to avoid Michael, but she faces an extremely uncomfortable moment when Jack and Michael start discussing whether 'James' looks like Jack. Ronnie faces a further blow when Jack invites Michael to stay for as long as he wants and he accepts the offer. Later, Kat discovers that Michael is staying at Ronnie's and storms over to ask how Ronnie could do such a thing. Thinking Kat is referring to the baby swap, Ronnie panics - but she's relieved when she realises that Kat is talking about Michael. Kat warns Ronnie that Michael will destroy her relationship with Jack - and later, Ronnie storms out of the flat when Jack refuses to get rid of their guest.

At The Vic, Kat tries to get her relationship with Alfie back on track but her plan for an afternoon of passion doesn't go as planned. Later, Kat finds herself alone with Michael at the pub and she asks how he's feeling. A moment of desperation follows as Kat launches herself at Michael, kissing him. However, Michael pushes her away, saying that there is nothing left between them following Tommy's death. Kat then breaks down sobbing, unaware that she's being watched by Alfie.

Meanwhile, Darren is keen to speak to Jodie but she won't listen to him. Later, Abi is jealous to discover Mercy comforting Darren and invites him round to her house. While there, she confesses her true feelings for him but is disappointed when Darren admits he still loves Jodie. All of a sudden, Jodie walks in having overheard the conversation. Darren then declares his love and proposes - and a thrilled Jodie falls into his arms.

Elsewhere, Whitney is outraged to discover that David thought she was a prostitute, Roxy quizzes Glenda on her secret man; Whitney learns about Janine's history as a hooker; and Glenda winds up Shirley but is gutted when Shirley retaliates.

Thursday 3rd

Phil returns home from hospital and is unhappy to hear that Glenda has been invited to his and Shirley's engagement party, which is taking place later. Phil's concerns grow when Jay informs him that he overheard Glenda telling Patrick to expect "fireworks" at the celebration. Phil soon pays a visit to The Vic and tells Glenda that he regrets what he said to her at the hospital and wants to meet her at the club. Over at the R&R, Glenda starts asking Phil questions about their affair but he keeps quiet. When Glenda won't let up, Phil looks in her bag and discovers that she is recording their conversation.

Angry, Phil immediately smashes Glenda's phone and warns her that she's not welcome at the party. He then locks her in, but Glenda later manages to fix her phone and calls Ian, who slips out of the party to see her. When he arrives, Glenda convinces Ian that they both need to team up to get revenge on Phil. Back at the pub, Phil has surprised Shirley, Ben and Jay with a holiday to Portugal, explaining that it's an engagement present from Grant. As they go home to pack, Ian and Glenda arrive - what will happen next?

Meanwhile, Roxy arrives at the party in a skimpy frock and Michael arrogantly asks if she is dressed up for him. However, Michael soon spots Vanessa and, liking what he sees, he goes over to introduce himself. Later, Michael initiates a game of darts with Max - saying that he'll give him £100 if he wins, but if he loses, Max must let him kiss Vanessa. Roxy, Ricky, Patrick and Billy all become involved in the game, along with Alfie. It turns out that Michael is a brilliant darts player and he wins all of the bets - but when it comes to a battle with Alfie, he tries to lose on purpose. However, this doesn't go down well with Alfie, who insists that he's not a charity case.

Elsewhere, Whitney and Janine hope to secure jobs at the R&R but their plans don't work out; Vanessa is unimpressed by the news of Jodie's engagement; Darren fails in an attempt to get his job at the car lot back; and Janine makes contact with David before informing Whitney that she has a plan.

EastEnders star Steve John Shepherd has claimed that viewers will soon see a different side to his character Michael Moon.

The actor explained that viewers may be surprised over the coming days when Michael starts supporting his cousin Alfie (Shane Richie) amid problems in his marriage to Kat (Jessie Wallace).

Tonight's episode of the BBC soap sees Kat kiss Michael in a moment of desperation, while a devastated Alfie watches on.

Speaking to Inside Soap about how things progress from there, Shepherd explained: "Alfie tells Michael that he saw him and Kat kissing. Michael is quite shocked and embarrassed about it - but he's also concerned about the state of Kat and Alfie's marriage.

"He's trying to help Alfie through all this and you get to see a whole new side to Michael that you might not have expected."

Meanwhile, asked about Michael's feelings for Kat, Shepherd replied: "Michael really enjoys Kat's company and feels that, if circumstances were different, something might well transpire between them. And although he'd never actively want her and Alfie to split up, the fact that he's right there on the doorstep can't be an enormous help to them as far as their marriage is concerned."
