View Full Version : Funniest phishing scam

Like all of us I have received a number of phishing scams over the last few years. Mostly they are very boring telling me about inappropriate activity on bank accounts I don't have and that if I give my name, address, account no., pin number, security code number, inside leg measurement etc. it can all be sorted out.

However, today I received one which I think is possibly the funniest I have ever received. It purports to be from David Cameron and tells me that I have just had a £2,000,000 inheritance payment deposited in an ATM account and if I send off all the usual information to William Hague at the Foreign Office I will receive a card which will allow me to get at it. However, I have been warned not to contact anyone in the Government to see if the email is genuine because if I do I will not receive my payment. What the Foreign Office has to do with inheritance is not really explained.

Do these people honestly believe that anyone will fall for this nonsense?

The sad thing is that there are some gullible people out there who will fall for this nonsense. If they send out 100000 emails and less than half a percent respond they stand to make huge money

I had another great email today from "McDonalds". It asked me if I would like to take part in a customer survey. There were five superficial questions, including one which asked which drink did I prefer at McDonald's Coke, Pepsi, Fanta or Coffee. Considering they don't sell Pepsi at McDonald's that would be a bit difficult to say that was my favourite. Anyway after the five questions, I then had to fill in my name, address and....... full bank details (just for verification of course....)

I think it's about time I resent my begging email. I've moved country now and I'm in need of some gullible people to fund my lifestyle. Hmm do you think if I said I have terminal cancer and a dozen kids to feed that I'd get some sympathy? Or maybe it could be that my only child who worked in the paddy fields got eaten by an alligator and I need some money to pay a guy to shoot the gator and get my child's body back so I can bury it.

I've just received this email...it's got to be the best yet:

"Greeting

I am Safia Farkash Gaddafi, Second wife of late Muammar Gaddafi. I have been a slave and brutally abused in my late husband's house and family ever since i married him and i have been looking for a way out of the marriage I thank Allah that i am presently in Algeria now with my daughter Aisha and son and even as the news of his death on 20th of October 2011 came to us. I and my children feel the shock of his death and son late Mustassim Gaddafi but at the sometime we are grateful to Allah that we finally have our freedom from his hands and his loyalist because people of Libya is now free from a horror rule of 42yrs of government.

This is the best opportunity for me to run out of the hell marriage i got involved to live a better and free life. I succeeded in moving out $12.5 Million from my late husband's underground safe which he accumulated from crude oil etc ,and the money was move to a bank fiduciary vault escrow in Europe, due to the fact the UN, USA, EUROPEAN COMMITTEE have put sanction on late Muammar Gaddafi and his family it is not wise for me to use my name as the depositor of the fund in the bank, so i decided to look for someone else not related to me or loyal to late Muammar Gaddafi as the depositor of the fund, that is why i am soliciting for your partnership to complete this transaction.

I am willing to give you 40% of the sum for securing the fund. I will meet you where ever you want me to meet you as soon as you receive the fund for my 60% share so that i can start a new and happy life.

The late Muammar Gaddafi life have come to end and he paid with his life and son the crimes he committed against humanity and i know that people of Libya under NTC will conduct election for the first time since 42yrs now that the enemy is dead. I will send you further information concerning the fund deposit as soon as i hear from you.

Please, if you are not interested do not disclose my intention so that it will not get to my late husband, relatives or loyalist as they will burn me alive with my entire family.

As soon as this transaction is completed i will leave Algeria to meet you where ever you want me to come. This transaction is 100% safe on your side. I need your help urgently because we do not have time to delay this.

If you are interested do get back to me for further information on my private email ([email protected]).

I wait to hear from you

Sincerely
Safia Farkash Gaddafi"

She didn't

Libyans sifting through the possessions in Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli have found the passport of his eldest son Mohammad. There, in English, is the correct spelling of the name, one of the least-used variants. It's not Gaddafi. It's Gathafi.

Who knows what the correct spelling is anyway. And, if I wanted to con people out of cash, I would not use the least-used variant of the name either, seeing that most people would not recognise it and therefore would be suspicious.

I think the clue is in the fact it was on his PASSPORT

would not recognise it and therefore would be suspicious

Not that they would be suspicious of a letter promising them huge sums of money that appeared in their email

Its a scam letter anyway and they usually have give away clues and I was merely pointing out one of them:o

I've already booked my tickets to Algeria as I thought it was unfair to ask her to leave the country where she is safe, so I'm going to meet her.

I might give you all a share of my million when I return....

THESE days there's more spam in inboxes than pensioners' larders.
The vast majority of recipients wisely delete the bogus emails, commonly designed to con the naïve out of money, but one trusting man has enough time on his hands to take the senders' proposals seriously – with hilarious consequences.

Self-professed Hero of Dundee Bob Servant – the 64-year-old alter-ego of author and journalist Neil Forsyth – has made a habit of engaging the fraudsters in online conversations.

The outcome is always the same – he gives the culprits hope before slowly ebbing it away via a series of absurd requests, questions and observations about their so-called grand plans.

He managed to get a man claiming to be a Liberian refugee embroiled in a debate about Dawn French and demanded an 'Australian businessman' – who sent a picture of himself – shave off his beard before agreeing to wire money to him.

The latter does as asked, emailing the same snap with the facial hair digitally rubbed out.

The email exchanges are among those that appear in new book Why Me? The Very Important Emails Of Bob Servant by Neil Forsyth.

Now, Owen, you're going to have to help me here. How in God's name can you say you should get the same as old Frenchy?

I attach a link and 'screen grab' of the famous scene from Vicar of Dibley where Frenchy falls into a puddle. Beat that.

Morning champ,

OK here's my position. I don't like beards, Alistair, I don't like them at all. About forty years ago I saw a documentary about a guy with a beard who led a gang of young pickpockets in London and then one of the kids started singing as if someone had his little balls in a vice and, oh dear, the whole thing was awful.

So Alistair, it's very simple. Simply shave off your beard and sit back in that same chair in that same office and send me a new photo. I will then send you every single penny I have as well as my neighbour Frank's pension book and 'flat screen' TV.

Because, don't get me wrong, Alistair, I can see your potential. You, Alistair, are wearing a sandwich board saying 'Opportunity', a top hat saying 'Trust Me' and, if I may, a pair of pants embroidered with the phrase

'Work Hard' at the front and, if I may, 'Play Hard', at the back. That last bit was all metaphors.

I just thought I would share my good news with you all.

Apparently after seven months of intensive negotiations between the FBI and the Secretary General of the United Nations, it has been agreed to release the £1,500,000 owed to me by the Central Bank of Nigeria. All I have to do is send $175 to Goodluck Jonathan personally (although curiously the name on the account I have to deposit this money is actually Alfred Williams) and he will see to it that my money is released.

It must be genuine as I have been warned that anyone asking for more than $175 is a fraudster and if I receive such a request I am to cease communication with EVERYONE I have EVER known.....

Still it's good to know that in spite of Syria etc., Ban-Ki moon has been able to spend seven months in intensive negotiations on my behalf. Fair play to him.

When I get the money I am going to donate some of it to Bob Diamond as he will be a bit hard up next year without his bonus.

alan45

I had an amusing call today, from which I could only conclude that these people have absolutely zero common sense.

I answered the phone and the guy said that he was from the company that I insure my mobile phone with. He said he needed to send me a letter to read and read out my full name, first line of my address and postcode and asked me to confirm whether they were correct. He then proceeded to ask me if I'd ever had a mortgage, at which point I presumed that he was one of those PPI calls and rather than being from my insurance company, must have bought my details from them. I put the phone down on him at this point.

Seeing as this guy has likely bought all my personal details, I'm guessing that he also has my date of birth. I'm 21. It's 2013, a 21 year old is hardly likely to be able to get a mortgage! Wish I'd been a bit sharper at the time and said that to him.

Ha ha...good answer! :rotfl:

Attention: Beneficiary

I am pleased to inform you that your ATM Card worth Ten Million, Five
Hundred Thousand United States Dollars (US$10.5m) sent from thailand as
part of your overdue payment/funds was returned to our office last
week from Atlanta, Georgia where it was held due to one unavailable
document. According to the information reaching my desk today, the ATM
Card was returned due to your failure to pay the necessary charges
required by the delivery company to enable it pass through the
security agency.

However, after due investigation was conducted, I found out that your
ATM Card was stopped unnecessarily. Georgia office told us that your
ATM Card has no INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY PERMIT that was why you were
told to pay huge amount of money which you did not pay. But after
further investigation, it was very clear that your ATM Card has the
INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY PERMIT attached to it therefore you will no
longer pay the money you were asked to pay then. Now the only money
you are required to pay is $180 only billed for THAILAND CUSTOMS
SERVICE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE to clear your file so that you can
receive your ATM Card without further delay. Note that the thailand
customs will process the CUSTOMS CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE and send it to
us as soon as you send the money to them to enable us release your ATM

GOOD DAY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

I am sure this mail would be coming to you as a surprise since we have never met before and you would also be asking why I have decided to chose you amongst the numerous internet users in the world, precisely I cannot say why I have chosen you but do not be worried for I come in peace and something very positive is about to happen to your life right now and to the lives of others through you if only you can carefully read and digest the message below. The internet has made the world a global village where you can reach anybody you have not met before.
Before I move further, permit me to give you a little of my biography, I am Mother Jane milne Robert, 72 Years old woman and the wife of Late Sir Moses Anna who died in a Plane crash on Monday the 7th of September 1999 GMT 14:22 UK while they were flying from New York to Geneva. Please see site below for more information.
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9809/swissair.victims.list/index.htm
After the death of my husband I became the Head of his investment and now that I am old and weak I have decided to spend the rest of my life with my family and loved ones whom I never had time for during the course of my business life, but before the death of my husband we had a plan to use the last days of our lives to donate half of what we have worked for to the less privilege and charity homes and the other half for ourselves, family members and close friends, and it is so unfortunate that my husband is not alive today to do this with me and I am very weak and old now, hence I have decided to do this philanthropic work on behalf of my late husband and I.
Presently, I have willed out almost half of our assets to several charity homes and to some of the less privilege in different countries.
Despite the agreement between my late husband and I to give aid to the deprived, we also agreed to render support to an individual we have not meet before in life due to the fact when we were still young in life we receive an anonymous help from an individual we did not know and which we have not being able to know or met again till date, the impact we got from such gestsure made us wabt to do same.
I am sorry to inform you that you will never have the chance to know me because I have just concluded the assignment which my husband and I have agreed upon before his sudden death and you happened to be the beneficiary of our last WILL, irrespective of your previous financial status, hence I need you to do me a favor by accepting our offer that will cost you nothing.
I have presently deposited a Cheque in the sum of $3.5million with DHL express to deliver to you when i visited west Africa to conclude some unfinished transaction and investment on behalf of my late husband,So i have contacted the ATTORNEY in charge of the deposited cheque which i left there so that he can go to the DHL delivery company there to know when they will deliver the cheque package to you because of the expiring date.
For your information, I have paid for the delivering Charge, Insurance Premium and Clearance Certificate Fee of the Cheque showing that it is not a Drug Money or meant to sponsor Terrorist attack in your Country
You have to contact the DHL COURIER SERVICE now for the delivery of your cheque with this information bellow;
dhl address: DHL International Nigeria Ltd DHL House ABUZE ABUJA
Contact Person: Dr Kenny Tosin
Email:[email protected]
Again, you are not to pay for the delivering Charge, the Insurance premium and the Clearance Certificate Fee of the Cheque because I have already paid for them, the only money you are expected to pay is $180 for the security keeping & intuity fee of the cheque so far.
I would have paid the fee but the company insisted that I should not because they don't know when you will be contacting them and to avoid demurrage or further cost.

You are to reconfirm the below information to them to avoid any mistake on the Delivery.
Your Postal / delivery address;
Your Full Names:
Direct telephone number;
Below is the security keeping code: (FED/0433/SKC) of you draft, you are to also present it to them for verification before delivery.
Let me repeat again, try to contact them as soon as you receive this mail to avoid any further delay and remember to ask them to provide you with the method they wish to use in receiving their security keeping fee of $180 for from you their immediate action.
Note: Please I do not want you to thank me or my husband all I need you to do is to invest wisely with it and do the same good to someone’s life someday as this is the only way this world would be a better community if we render selfless services to one another.
Be also notified that I will no longer be reading my emails or surfing the internet as I have retired completely from the outside world to my ranch, at this moment I have nothing to do with cars, emails and other luxuries, all further correspondence should be forwarded to the courier company for the delivery of your cheque to you.
Yours Faithfully,

Mrs. Jane Milne Robert
