View Full Version : EastEnders is in a poor state.

*Beware this post is one massive rant*

I don't want to moan too much, but I've watched EastEnders for years and at the moment, it has to be in the worst state I've seen it in. What on earth is going on? The storylines are unoriginal... everyone seems to be having an affair or just sleeping with someone... this is not entertaining to watch! What happened to the storyline with the Golds? ... It was revealed Jodie wasn't Harry's daughter, should we have cared? Because I didn't really. The 'duff duffs' have been awful recently. Jack and Max going off together to 'sort out' Harry ala the Mitchell brothers didn't leave me wanting to see more! Now Harry seems to have disappeared. Is he coming back? Because I thought he was meant to be this scary new villain!

The characters are all over the place... Jane seems to have had a personality transplant and is not the character she's been like in the past!

The pacing is all over the place - some characters we don't see for weeks, then they pop up again with a story, like the Beales for example! There is no consistency. If we don't see characters for a number of weeks, then they return on screen with their story.. how are we meant to care what happens to them?

The stories are all terrible at the moment. Unoriginal. Uninspiring. Jay becoming a 'Mitchell' with him flooring Connor lol!? Oh please! I did have to laugh at that... so cringey. Then we have this ongoing Ryan/Stacey/Janine stuff ... Janine's character is being ruined by this story!

The continuity is terrible. Nobody seemed to have been affected by the Queen Vic fire. Stacey was trapped in the fire with her baby, but a few months later she's back working behind the bar as if it never happened! Phil seems to be over his drug addiction.

The comedy is hit and miss. Sometimes it's cringeworthy and has obviously been shoehorned into the script!

EastEnders is turning into a joke.

Please add your own thoughts. Feel free to disagree etc.

I think Tuesday's episode is going to be my last one. Please someone let me know when it's got better.

I have to say I didn't notice that EE had gotten worse until I watched the omnibus. It isn't too bad on each half hour stretch but the omnibus does get a bit tedious.

I think it goes through phases of being good or bad. Hopefully this is one of them!

Dare you to post that on DS Davy. You would set the trolls off on one.

Each time EE gets a new producer he is lauded as some sort of Messiah who is going to perform all sorts of miracles.

My opinion of EEs problem lies with the muppets who write the scripts. They are all a bunch of luvvies who have absolutely no idea of real life let alone the East End of London. One luvvie writes scripts for a couple of weeks and concentrates on his or her agenda and the characters they think are important. Along comes anothe luvvie a couple of weeks later and starts writing another set of scripts based on their agenda and with little or no reference to the previous luvvies scripts. That is why characters change fro week to week and storylines stop and start. There appears to be no continuity

Davey I agree with what you have said but as it is the only soap I watch, I will keep watching it.. EE has gone through some tough times and has bounced back time and time again. I think it was Alan or Parkerman that said, at the moment, why compete with Corrie's 50th anniversary, everyone is watching that. Let the stories build up and come to a big crash

Maybe Davey was not talking about recent storylines but the whole of this year which has left a lot to be desired, compared to Corrie and Emmerdale

The whole year wasn't that bad.. we had the live show which was brilliant. we had the vic fire.. return of Kat and Alfie.. the Massod gay story line... it was a pretty good year

I am enjoying the return of Kat and Alfie and the Massods but that is it everything else is boring especially the Ryan and Stacey affair

In regards to the whole year, there has been the odd standout episode which has been brilliant - the New Year's Day episode, the live episode, Peggy's exit and Billie's death have probably been the best episodes of the year for me. But storylines and characterisation has been very poor. Archie's murder plot was all hype and no substance. Saying that, the live episode was good and revealing Stacey as the killer was shocking, but it's ruined her character in the long run and has undone all her character development... Stacey is no killer. It's a shame..

As for letting stories build up and waiting for them to come to a big crash, well it feels like no story is doing that at the moment.

I stopped watching EE very early in the year when the likes of Billy and whatsherface, Shirley's niece, were dominating the screen time. I found them so annoying.

Billy Mitchell is one character I really detest. He's always moaning about his life yet does nothing to resolve the situation.

my problem is the fact there are very few of the characters that are actually likeable! I love the Masoods and thats about it. I find its hard to watch a soap and you have to feel for the characters or its pointless.

I love Kat and Alfie and there return has been great.

I disagree about Kat and Alfie, I think they've been on screen far too much since their return and are actually annoying me a bit.

I was shocked they won the award last night. EE is just crap

It was based on last year and they had that live episode, the pub fire, Stacey/Peggy leaving, return of Kat and Alfie and other stuff. Corrie did have their big 50th celebrations but EE is just more popular and as this is viewers votes (only one per entry), it is the public who perfered EE this year

But all other soaps have had big, great storylines, and well acted. For some reason, EE does it every year, regardless.

not true. if you look back on past event of this (available on the NTA site) it is a 50/50 split between EE and corrie.. Emmerdale never wins it and I know in the past there was some fantastic storyline there

If EE ran a program showing the grass growing in Albert Square they would still win awards because no matter what ****e they produce people still vote for them. The quality of a programme doesnt matter to the core voters who will vote for EE time and time again

This is true... but again as I said, it is was up to the public and EE is the most popular soap.. maybe by teens voting but it won

Tammy.. I don't watch Emmerdale but that seems to be a popular storyline but again it was down to the public on this... I would have been happy if they had won or if another soap won but I know other sites out there would be outraged that EE didn't win again.. it is probably those sites that did the vote and possibly on multiple email addresses.

Absolutely. Emmerdale's on six times a week and manages to be consistently brilliant. I enjoy every episode. It's by far the best soap these days imo, its come such a long way these past 18 months or so.

Sir Elton John has launched a stinging attack on reality television and EastEnders.

The 63-year-old singer criticised TV talent shows for the poor standard of contestants and then turned on EastEnders for being full of "misery".

When asked what gets on his nerves, John told ShortList: "Reality TV shows. I really hate them. Full of f**king mediocre f**king wannabes."

He went on to add: "We see enough misery in the newspapers every day without having to tune in to some poor c**t boiling an egg in EastEnders and having his f**king head chopped off because his wife doesn't like him.

"Oh f**k off, there's so much misery around. F**k off. We're addicted to misery in this country. F**king EastEnders."

just did a quick view figures for late half of last year and beginning of this year.. Corrie pulls in more viewer every week than EE does.. except on the live shows last year.. EE got 16 + million, Corrie got 12 + million (figures on BARB)

So either voting was fixed or just more viewer of EE has access to internet than Corrie ones or as I said earlier.. EE fans are voting with multiple email addresses... I have a feeling that the viewer of Corrie are more in the older age catagory which might explain the lack of online votes from them...

I thought I would post in here again, as unfortunately I still haven't got back into EastEnders. I feel like it hasn't made much improvement since 2010 when I originally posted this thread. I have stopped watching, but I do catch the odd episode here and there to see if it's improved and I read the spoilers to see if anything catches my eye.

I caught Zainab's exit the other week as I think she's been a great character on the show, but I thought her exit was really disappointing. Why didn't they kill her off? It would have created some much needed excitement! I find the show just trudges along these days, as a non event. I caught the Christmas Day episode and I thought it was the worst ever.

I haven't watched EE for about 6 months and can't say I miss it - whenever I see the odd bit of an episode now I cringe at the poor acting and writing.

ee is okish, but not as bad as some would like us to believe.

i thought the christmas day ep was good, (the best of the soaps on christmas day) ee have had better christmas day ep's. i have known ee to be in a worse state than this. the main problem for the show it is watchable, but you could miss an ep and catch up with the next. ee has a great cast with some brilliant talent, ann mitchell, jo joyner, jessie wallace, june brown, lindsay coulson, the list is endless.

corrie has improved and is on top of its game at the mo.

however, these things go in cycles, corrie in 12 months will probably be going down the pan with sb in charge.

im still enjoying ee and at the end of the day, thats all that matters.

I haven't seen EE since I moved here 18 months ago and I can say I don't miss it or any of the soaps.. I catch up on here and the odd occasion I am back in Dublin so I feel like I am watching it all the time..

I don't miss it at all. In fact the last time I watched I turned off half way through, it's just naff television.

Poor characters, poor storylines and poor writing.
