Blanche Hunt has been named as the favourite Coronation Street character of all time.

The sharp-tongued battle axe, who died this year after the real-life death of actress Maggie Jones last December, scooped more than 30 per cent of the vote in a survey of fans.

Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander) came second, while Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn) scooped third place.

The poll of more than 1,000 readers of Inside Soap magazine asked viewers to name their best-loved people and moments from the last half-century of the soap, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next week.

Raven-haired beauty Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) was named sexiest female of all time, with 29 per cent of the vote, followed by Carla Connor (Alison King) and original tart with a heart Elsie Tanner (Pat Phoenix).

Liam Connor (Rob James Collier) scooped 34 per cent of the vote to be named sexiest male, with Ciaran McCarthy (Keith Duffy) in second place and Charlie Stubbs (Bill Ward) behind him.

Readers picked Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) as the best barmaid of all time.

Jack and Vera Duckworth (Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn) emerged as the favourite Street couple, pulling in a whopping 55 per cent of the votes.

Steven Murphy, editor of Inside Soap magazine, said: "Our survey shows the overwhelming affection people have for Coronation Street, with many claiming they know the characters on the street even better than their own neighbours."

I would have put Bet Gilroy as No. 1

Good as Blanche was, I think these sort of polls always tend to be biased in favour of more recent characters (as it is in this case). Tina McIntyre top of the poll for sexiest female with Carla second and Liam Connor as sexiest male with Ciaran and Charlie second and third are further examples. Most people voting haven't watched it for 50 years so they can't possibly say.

Best character of all time? Where's Elsie Tanner and Ena Sharples for example? Without them and others like them, the Street might never have got off the ground in the first place.

Blanche certainly was a great character but whether or not she was as good as the acid tongued Ena is another question. Liam Connor as sexiest male is something of a joke considering the short time he was in the soap.

I think Peter Barlow should be the sexiest male

Although I don't like to refer myself as ancient. I remember Elsie, Hilda and Ena with fond memories when I was growing up. I loved Ena Sharples and her costic coments sitting in the snug with her half a stout. Corrie wouldn't have survived 50 years without Hilda, Elsie, Ena and Uncle Albert.
