Malachy (Glen Wallace) and Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) sit down to enjoy a meal together. It's tense as they reflect on recent events, but it's clear that there's still something between them. Later, they come across Brendan (Emmett J Scanlan), Cheryl (Bronagh Waugh) and Lynsey (Karen Hassan), who are shocked to see them reunited and express their doubts, but Malachy and Mercedes vow that they are back together forever. The couple stand in front of Il Gnosh and hold each other close in a tight embrace. Suddenly, there's an almighty explosion, Malachy and Mercedes are blown off their feet and come crashing down on the ground. Later, Brendan's on edge as Cheryl determines to discover the identity of his mystery love interest. Cheryl is downbeat on hearing the news that Malachy and Mercedes are back together, while Lynsey does her best to give strength to Cheryl, despite her own feelings of hurt.

Lee (Alex Carter) tells Leanne (Jessica Forrest) that he doesn't want to marry her - he's met someone else. A heartbroken Leanne throws Lee out. Meanwhile, Amy (Ashley Slanina-Davies) falls asleep in front of the television while babysitting for Leah and Lucas, unaware that there's smoke creeping under the door. Rae (Alice Barlow) shows off her stunning new look to Ste (Kieron Richardson) and it seems to have the desired effect. Elsewhere, as Kevin (Cameron Crighton) packs his stuff, Elliot (Garnon Davies) reveals that he has looked in the box under the bed and knows that Kevin was abandoned as a baby. Later, Lee finds Kevin at the beacon, and Kevin asks him to pass on his apologies to Elliot - he had to go...

Amber (Lydia Lloyd Henry) asks Finn (Connor Wilkinson) to meet up with her after school, needing a favour from him. But when he refuses to steal a certain item from Drive 'n' Buy, she's forced to do it herself. Later, Finn goes to see Amber, who sneaks him inside and presents him with a positive pregnancy test! As reality bites, they reflect on this terrifying and daunting prospect. Unaware of the fire that rages beneath them, they admit to each other how scared they are and Finn assures her that they'll stick together through this. Needing to get home, Finn goes to open the door and head out, but there's a huge blast and they're lifted off their feet and thrown across the room. Elsewhere, fresh from enjoying the fireworks at The Dog, Gabby (Phina Oruche) and Tony (Nick Pickard) walk back home, only to be stopped dead in their tracks when they see Il Gnosh ablaze. Gabby's struck with fear for her daughter and tries to rush into the building, but Tony holds her back. As Tony struggles to help Amber and Finn, flames surrounding them, Gabby can only watch helplessly...

Gilly (Anthony Quinlan) goes to apologise and Steph (Carley Stenson) explains that she's accepted that her time has come - she's had to, otherwise every day would be full of fear and she wants to make the most of it. Gilly's overwhelmed by her bravery and they kiss as the fireworks explode. Steph and Gilly react to the noise and run into the village, where they find Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and Malachy (Glen Wallace) injured from the explosion. Gilly tries to phone an ambulance but the call box is out of order and Steph tells him to go and get help. Steph sees Amy (Ashley Slanina-Davies) is trapped in the flat and decides to go in and rescue her. Gilly returns from phoning 999 to be told by Mercedes that Steph has gone into the burning building. Steph passes Leah down to Gilly as Mercedes steadies the ladder. She then goes back in to get Lucas and, despite Gilly's pleading, returns for a final time to get Amy. Gilly shouts Steph's name - will she get out alive?

As the fire rages, Steph (Carley Stenson) navigates her way through the burning flat. She hears Gilly (Anthony Quinlan) shout from outside, willing her to get out. She tries the window, but it's stuck; there's no escape! Myra (Nicole Barber-Lane) turns up and takes in the scene. Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) is hysterical, convinced that Malachy (Glen Wallace) is going to die. Once the ambulances arrive, Malachy starts to breathe again, but he remains unconscious - will he make it? We see the fire being started and learn that this is no accident. But the question is, who is the arsonist?
