Cathy Murphy has joined the cast of EastEnders, it has been confirmed.

The critically acclaimed actress will play the feisty Julie Perkins, whose arrival on Albert Square turns Billy Mitchell's (Perry Fenwick) life upside down as she forces him to face some shocking home truths.

Speaking about the role, Murphy said: "Like our characters, I've known Perry since I was 16 and he is a brilliant actor. We've never worked together before so I am looking forward to getting stuck into our fantastic rollercoaster of a story."

The arrival of Julie, described as an "antidote to the snarling women of Albert Square", will leave Billy stunned to discover that he may have more skeletons in the closet waiting to be discovered.

Julie will be Murphy's third role in the BBC soap. She previously appeared in 1997 and more recently in 2005 as Trisha Taylor - the mother of Leo, who fathered Demi Miller's baby.

Hmm this could be okay. Billy has been boring for years, maybe this is what he needs to get good again.

The writers dont make good enough use of Perry Fenwick. He's been brilliant in the past with all the Little Mo storylines and Honey with the down syndrome and everything. He's a lovable guy, who is always very genuine and knd hearted. However his personality took a turn around in the soap, so i suppose this is chance to see his dark side again.

I think it might be someone in his foster care, maybe one of the carers or something. We did find out a while ago that Billy was abused while there.

When Billy gets a letter from the police asking him to testify against an abusive carer from the children's home he lived in, he tears it up.

But then Julie Perkins, who also lived at the home, turns up in Albert Square, forcing him to think about the past.

And actress Cathy Murphy - who plays Julie - has revealed she and Perry Fenwick go back as far as Billy and Julie do.

Cathy told Inside Soap: "I've known him since I was 16, and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into our fantastic storyline."

Billy never has it easy, and the storyline is not going to be straightforward.

Perry revealed: "There are loads of twists and turns to come. Some good stuff is on the way. Cathy is a great actress."

They're such good friends in real life, but will they get on so well on screen?

Perry Fenwick has admitted that he is grateful for the 'challenging' nature of his latest EastEnders storyline.

In scenes which air next week, the actor's character Billy Mitchell revisits his past when he receives a visit from Julie Perkins, an old friend from the days he spent in a children's home as a youngster.

Viewers will soon see Julie - played by actress Cathy Murphy - turn Billy's life upside down as she forces him to face some shocking home truths. However, full details of the storyline are currently being kept under wraps.

Speaking to Inside Soap about the plot, Fenwick commented: "When I had my first meeting with our new producer, Bryan Kirkwood, he said it was about time Billy had a story that's not connected to everyone else.

"When you've been in the show a long time, you've got a big book of history, and they're reintroducing things even I'd forgotten about! But the points about Billy being in the home were there and it's great for me to bring up all this stuff again."

He added: "It's a great acting challenge for me, as it's given me the chance to let go and be a little bit nutty. It's not just chirpy Billy selling bananas on a stall! There are plenty of twists and turns in this tale."

Fenwick celebrated his 1,000th episode of EastEnders earlier this year.

Yeh, I really like Billy. He doesnt get used enough.

Im guessing this woman coming into it was sexually abused by this guy, and perhaps Billy knew about it? He did say that he knew of people who were abused by him, but wasnt himself.

Yeah, he said to Phil he knew people but not him.. I reckon he was and he is just ashamed to admit it... maybe that is why he doesn't want this girl to talk to him..

As Billy and Julie talk about their past, things get a bit tense, and Julie makes a shocking revelation.

EastEnders' new recruit Cathy Murphy has admitted that she is keen for a romance to develop between her character and Walford regular Billy Mitchell.

Last month, it was announced that the actress had signed up for the role of Julie Perkins - a face from Billy's past who is about to turn his world upside down with some surprising revelations.

Speaking to Inside Soap about the duo, Murphy explained: "I'd like to think there's a romantic future for the pair of them. Julie's the female Billy. They're mirror images and really make each other laugh.

"They're really sweet together, though there's nothing going on yet. But if I was watching, I'd think, 'For God's sake, just get it on!'"

She added: "Nothing ever goes smoothly for Billy, does it? You do get the feeling that there's going to be more tragedy. It's certainly not going to go to plan, because people like to see a loser - it makes them feel better about their own lives! And this is two losers together!"

Julie made her first appearance on screen in last night's episode of the BBC soap.
