Kieron Richardson has come out as gay in an interview with ITV's This Morning.
The Hollyoaks actor, who also appeared on Dancing On Ice, divulged his sexuality to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
Richardson also revealed that his character Ste would be involved in a plot in which he would question his feelings for Brendan Brady (Emmett Scanlan)
The soap confirmed that the plot would see the pair form an "unusual friendship" as Ste becomes captivated by the bad boy.
The pair kiss on a night out but a disgusted Brendan then rejects Ste, who later admits that he has been attracted to another male before when he spent time in a young offenders' institute.
However, the long-term storyline is set to take a shocking twist when Brendan beats Ste up badly, marking the beginning of a turbulent and troubled relationship.
Hollyoaks series producer Paul Marquess said: "This is a long running storyline and while it is dark to begin with, the lessons that Ste learns are ultimately positive and life affirming.
"This story is about not being afraid to be who you are and while this is something Brendan struggles with, Ste is refreshingly accepting of his feelings towards another man," he continued. "I hope viewers will be glued throughout the twists and turns as we unravel how Brendan came to be the twisted person we have been watching on screen."
Richardson admitted that he was "shocked" to learn about the storyline but added that he was honoured to be given the plot.
He added: "Having understood the long-term storyline I am honoured and very excited to have been given this challenge. Brendan is a dangerous character and it will be interesting to see how Ste copes when he himself is the victim of domestic violence.”
Scanlan confessed that he is glad that Brendan is a becoming "a complex character" and "not a gratuitous soap villain, but a multi-layered character with depth, a troubled past and an unsure future".
He continued: "I hope that as the storyline develops, viewers will be able to understand why Brendan has become the villain they see today. Brendan is compelled to manipulate and control everyone who crosses his path. At the moment this makes him dangerous but when we identify why he behaves this way, we will discover his vulnerabilities and this is exciting..."
The scenes will air later next month.
Kieron Richardson has revealed that he fancies Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Hollyoaks actor, who came out last month, told New magazine that he was shocked to discover that he was fancied by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
He said: "The most surprising reaction I had was from Perez Hilton, who said in his blog he fancied me!
"He's not my type, though - give me Ronaldo any day!"
Richardson admitted that he had been worried about coming out because it might affect how people viewed his character Ste.
"I was worried before that I shouldn't say I was gay," he said. "Because my character was this tough guy and people might then think of me as a gay guy. But now it fits in with the storyline I'm doing."
Speaking to Digital Spy recently, Richardson confessed that he is "terrified" about the plot which will see Ste become involved in an abusive gay relationship.
As Ste Hay in Hollyoaks, Kieron Richardson has never been a stranger to high-profile storylines, but from what I've seen of his latest plot so far, fans are about to be treated to some of his best performances yet.
At a recent Hollyoaks press event in London, I chatted to Kieron about the gritty domestic violence storyline developing between Ste and his sinister boss Brendan Brady, and you can find the main interview by clicking here.

What's it been like at work in general since Paul Marquess joined?
"Paul is my fourth producer. Bryan Kirkwood was a favourite of mine, because he brought me into the show full-time. When I got the job with David Hanson, he had me in for just seven episodes - my character was just supposed to come in, sleep with Amy and that was it. But when Bryan took over, he liked what I did and brought me back for a tiny bit to test me, and then put me on a year's contract. I've stayed ever since, so I've got a lot to thank Bryan for, especially the domestic abuse story with Ste and Amy. But since Paul's taken over, I feel that the work that I've done - which hasn't been on screen yet - is some of my strongest stuff. That's obviously thanks to the material that he's producing. Also, I'm a fan of Hollyoaks myself and when I watch it, I think it's a lot stronger - Paul's got the balance right between comedy and the serious stuff. The balance is perfect at the moment."
What else can we look forward to from Hollyoaks in the months ahead?
"The week of the fire is a very strong week. But it's so difficult to say what to watch out for, because each week there's something really good that happens. This is another thing that Paul's done - at the end of every episode, there's a real hook - something happens in every single episode. It's a lot of storylines, but we've got a lot of cast! In other shows, you might have one storyline that runs for the week, and the cliffhanger will be at the end of the week so that people tune in the week after. But what's great about Hollyoaks now is that there's a reveal or a cliffhanger in every single episode. People really want to know what happens next and want to tune into the E4 episode - and that's what television is all about, keeping people entertained."
You've mentioned in past interviews that you sometimes lack self-confidence - has that changed recently, especially after all the support you've received lately?
"Well, I'm quite a shy person and I fell into acting by accident. I'm 24 now and I started acting when I was 19. It was literally because my stepdad was friends with Will Mellor, and Will used to always come round to our house in his fancy car and I'd say, 'I want to be an actor who drives cars like that!' He gave me the number for an acting coach and then, within six months, I was in Hollyoaks. As I'm quite shy, I struggled at first, but last year when I did Dancing On Ice, that helped me a lot with my confidence. More recently, the whole coming out thing is a big deal. Even though I'd come out to my friends and family four years ago, it was going through it again, but this time it was in public and I was wondering whether people would accept it and if they'd not believe the character anymore. But obviously the character is gay now, so it seemed like the right time to do it."
Your first interview about your sexuality was on live TV - do you think it might have been less nerve-wracking to do it in print?
"It was totally my decision to do it on This Morning. When I did Dancing On Ice, the press knew about my sexuality but didn't run the story. But every day they'd ring and say, 'Go on, sell your story'. I thought it'd be wrong to sell it and make money out of it - I don't feel like I should earn any money from it. Also, if you do it in print, your words can be twisted and I didn't want a sensational headline. It was my decision to work with Paul, work with the press office and say, 'I'll do it, but I want to do it on This Morning with Holly and Phil, because I've got a connection with them already'. It was set up weeks in advance and we knew exactly how it was going to go. It's worked out well so far."
Is there anything else you'd like to say about Hollyoaks?
"I love the new titles! At first, I was a bit freaked out by the music, because I think the old tune was so harsh and in-your-face, and I was so used to it. This is slower and a lot more mellow, so I was unsure at first but I'm getting used to it now! In terms of the titles and the whole look of them, I think they're some of the strongest titles in all of the soaps. It's something a bit different, and everyone looks fit in them!"
TWISTED Brendan Brady gets Ste Hay exactly where he wants him – in the bedroom.
The bully, who beat Ste for *attempting to kiss him, is set to get even darker as he wields his power over the troubled lad.
He makes sure Ste knows exactly who is in charge after they sleep together.
And there’s nothing Ste can do about it as he has no idea he’s being controlled by Brendan.
A Hollyoaks insider said: “Ste doesn’t realise how much power and control Brendan is wielding over him. He’s still coming to terms with his sexuality. Brendan is the only man he’s ever slept with so he feels a connection he’s never felt before.
“Even when Brendan beat him up he somehow managed to turn it all on Ste so he was the one that ended up apologising. And sadly, once they’ve slept together things are only going to get worse.
“This storyline is one of the darkest in the soap’s history and viewers will be shocked at the lengths Brendan goes to over the next few months.”
Fans can watch Brendan continue to manipulate Ste a week tomorrow on Channel 4.

Hollyoaks newcomer Brendan Brady has been something of an enigma since arriving on our screens back in August, but this week we'll finally learn more about the sinister nightclub manager when he steps up his manipulation of Ste with shocking consequences. When the pair go on a night out together before heading back to Brendan's place, they strike up a bond before a drunk Ste ends up kissing his boss. The surprise moment kicks off a complex relationship for the duo which will ultimately see Ste become the victim of domestic violence as Brendan struggles with his secret feelings of self-loathing. DS recently caught up with Emmett Scanlan - who plays Brendan - and gained a unique insight into his character's dark and twisted mind…
What kind of a reaction have you received since taking on the role of Brendan?
"Going out and about at home in Ireland and here in Liverpool, it's been nothing short of fantastic. People are very hospitable, very kind and very positive about the whole thing. It's all very good - it means you must be doing something right. But to be honest, my concern isn't so much what the reaction is, but rather carrying on delivering Brendan Brady on the screen. He's a very Marmite character - you either love him or you hate him. But so far, it's been very welcoming - especially Liverpool as a city."
Brendan is such a complex figure - how would you describe the character?
"He's very unpredictable and I've often described him as a sociopathic, homophobic gay man. He's very complex and very interesting - even when he's nice, you don't know when he's going to flip off. And when he flips off, he can very easily switch straight back to being nice. It's like the movie Chopper where Eric Bana played an Australian serial killer - a guy who would stab someone umpteen times in the stomach, and once he'd finished, he'd apologise for it! So he's the kind of individual who's not wired like most people."
Does that make Brendan a challenge to play?
"Absolutely. But it's a challenge in a completely positive way. There's nothing more exciting than doing something that you haven't yet done before and trying to push it, trying to find different angles and trying to find different parts of your character. Because Brendan's so complex and because he's so tapped, in a weird way it gives you the freedom to do or try anything - because Brendan as a character is capable of anything. For example, when I'm on set with the crew and the other cast members, I'm given such liberties in terms of my performance, and I can't thank them enough for that. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - you just take a risk, and if you don't take a risk, you never know. As long as you keep doing that, it keeps it interesting and fresh - and hopefully it evokes a reaction in the people who I'm acting with."
When you signed up for the role, did you already know about this storyline with Ste, or did you only find out about that later?
"Well, in the past I'd gone to Hollyoaks for different parts, but for various reasons it didn't pan out. When I went in for the reading of Brendan, they had a scene written out that had nothing to do with this storyline, it was just based on Brendan Brady as a character. But from this two-page scene, I could tell straight away that Brendan swung both ways. I said that to [producer] Paul Marquess, who was in the room at the time, and he confirmed it. After I did my audition, Paul spoke to me about the kind of character that Brendan was - and it wasn't that stereotypical gay storyline, which wouldn't interest me in the slightest. It was the fact that he was a self-loathing gay man that was immediately a turn-on for me - it would be for any actor. When something begs more questions than it gives answers, then you're hooked."
What happened next?
"I wanted the role straight away - especially knowing that he was this bad guy with different principles. Things aren't good or bad for Brendan - he lives by his own moral code. While he is very tapped and sociopathic and a self-loathing individual, there are certain qualities in him that I admire, and also certain qualities that I can identify with."
Before their night out, does Brendan realise that Ste has feelings for him?
"Yes. Brendan is a king manipulator. He lulls people into a false sense of security - it's like a fly being drawn to the spider. Because he's such a king manipulator, he can talk the underwear off this fella and he's very confident. So yeah, he definitely knows. He sees Stephen as a young, vulnerable guy who has no male friends, who hasn't had a father figure, and who - like Brendan - is a father himself. So Brendan can play with that."
Can you talk us through Ste and Brendan's first kiss from Brendan's point of view?
"Brendan is manipulating Stephen - he knows that Stephen fears him, looks up to him and in some ways admires him. When people walk into a room and command an audience, if you're let into their circle you feel slightly privileged - so Stephen is thrilled that he can go out with this guy and be his friend. Brendan takes Stephen out, gets him drunk while not drinking too much himself, and after 'coincidentally' forgetting his money, brings him back to his apartment. Then he gives him some fine Irish malt and manipulates Stephen into making the first move. It's a great scene and Kieron [Richardson] killed it that day - he was really good. Stephen kisses Brendan, but then Brendan goes on the offensive and tells Stephen to leave - so he runs home broken, confused and frightened."
What brings about their second kiss the next day?
"Brendan sends Stephen down to the cellar at the club to get some crates and follows him down. It's the kind of place where there's nobody around and nobody can hear you scream. He walks in, locks the door and refuses to let Stephen leave. Brendan walks over to him like a predator sussing out his prey, corners him and invades his personal space. Then he slowly gives him a kiss, then another kiss and smiles. He lets Stephen know that there's excitement and danger - there's an element of eroticism about the whole thing. Then they just give into a full-blown passionate kiss…"

I had high hopes for an interesting chat last week when I gave Emmett Scanlan a call to learn more about Ste and Brendan's dark new Hollyoaks storyline.
Although fans have already heard lots about the plot, there still seemed to be quite a few unanswered questions due to the enigmatic nature of Brendan's character and ambiguity over exactly what he's up to.
Fortunately, Emmett gave some very in-depth and intriguing answers - and it'll be reassuring for fans to know that a lot of thought seems to be going into this storyline from everyone involved.

Have you had to do much research for the domestic violence aspect of the storyline?
"Well, I guess in some ways, we've all been subject to some form of abuse - whether that's domesticated or otherwise, whether it was at school as a child, or you might have friends who have experienced it. The thing about it is that every case is different and every story is different. The principles are the same, but it's always different. With this, the writers give you your homework, so to speak - you explore it and you research it, because you want to give it the best truthfulness that you can. Obviously it's your work that's going out on screen, and your credibility goes with that. So you definitely need to do your homework."
What's Kieron like to work with?
"Kieron is fantastic and he's a joy to work with. When we first started the story, he was a little bit more nervous than I was, because he was coming at it from two different angles - coming out as a gay man himself, but also playing a character who was coming to terms with the same thing. There was added pressure for him and he had the harder role, put it that way. He, like myself, likes to play with the scenes - he likes to find different things that we can do. Often you're liking the scene on paper, but you need to bring it to life a bit and add a little bit of yourself to it. We toy around with things all the time - we try to push things and see how much we can get away with, because it is a 6.30pm show, so we think about how much we can imply and insinuate. What Kieron is able to portray more than anything is Ste's vulnerability - and vulnerability itself can be quite an attractive, sexy trait for someone to have. Kieron raises his game and he kills it every time."
What kind of impact do you want the story to have?
"I've always wanted the storyline to be subtle. I didn't want it to be thrown into this violent, sociopathic gay relationship straight away as that would lose its credibility - and credit to the writers and Paul Marquess because it has been very subtle and it's built over the weeks. I also want the story to evoke emotion - not just in the cast around me, but in the crew, the writers, the producers and the people who are investing half an hour of their lives into watching Hollyoaks each night. Whether those emotions are hatred, disgust or love or anything - I just want it to evoke something. I want it to touch on things, and I hope people are affected by it. But things like this are completely outside of the actors' control - we just have to give some truth to the storyline and try to make it as interesting as possible. We can't leave people short-changed. You never know, Brendan might become the most hated guy in England soon - that'd be a nice thing to have on the resumé!"
Are you looking forward to working with Darren Day more?
"Oh yeah, Darren's a cool dude. When he filmed his first episode, he came down and he was very humble and really wanted to do a good job - and he did. The guy's performances are very subtle and understated and I think he's going to make a great Danny Houston and a great addition to the cast. He's going to make a great gangster and a great partner for me - partners in crime, or maybe we'll go toe-to-toe. He'll be starting with us again very soon and I'm looking forward to starring with him and seeing what happens. We might go a few rounds together and we'll see who comes out on top! It'll be fascinating to watch."
Finally, why should we be watching Hollyoaks at the moment?
"Because Hollyoaks touches on issues that are affecting us all. It's a show that is daring - it tries to be different and it tries to step out of the box of normal TV. It takes risks and should be admired for it. Any one episode can give you dark, serious stuff that's going to evoke emotion, whether negative or positive. On the flip side of that, you'll also get the comedy of Lee Hunter or Darren Osborne. Hollyoaks never stops keeping with the trends of society and asking questions, and they're there to help people who've been in similar situations. In life we have to be taken outside of our comfort zones, so get outside your comfort zone and tune in at 6.30pm."

Hollyoaks star Bronagh Waugh has confirmed that her character Cheryl Brady will soon discover the truth about her half-brother Brendan's sexuality.
Since his arrival in the village last August, Brendan (Emmett Scanlan) has managed to keep Cheryl convinced that he is straight - while secretly maintaining a complex and abusive relationship with barman Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson).
However, in an online webchat with Heatworld this afternoon, Waugh explained that all will be revealed to Cheryl within the next few weeks.
Asked how Cheryl would react to Brendan's secret, Waugh replied: "I don't think she would be unhappy about him being gay. I think she would be absolutely devastated to find out that he's been lying to her for so long.
"Actually, in the coming weeks, all is going to be revealed and Cheryl is going to have a bit of a nightmare when her whole world as she knows it comes crashing down, so watch out."
The actress added that Cheryl's discoveries about Brendan leave her stunned and "seriously rock her world".
She added: "I don't think she's upset by the fact that he's gay, it's more the fact that he's been keeping it from her."
Hollyoaks favourite Ste Hay is in for a surprise next week as he realises that his friend and business partner Doug Carter is harbouring romantic feelings for him.
As Ste gets to know new love interest Adam in the coming days, he's startled as it becomes clear that Doug (PJ Brennan) is jealous.
Confused by Doug's behaviour, Ste demands answers and the pair end up sharing their first kiss as tension rises. Is Ste about to fall in love for the first time since Brendan (Emmett Scanlan)?
Digital Spy recently caught up with Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste, to chat about all things 'Stug' and 'Stendan'.
What was your initial reaction when you first heard about the Ste and Doug storyline?
"I had a big year last year with the Ste and Brendan storyline, so I'd kind of set myself up for having a quiet one this year. Obviously that hasn't happened, and it's an amazing feeling to know that you're coming into work to be really busy and have a storyline. It's great to have something to sink your teeth into.
"To top it off, working with PJ is incredible. We're friends anyway, so getting to work together as well is amazing. PJ is the kind of actor who doesn't just turn up on set and say his lines. Instead, we'll take the time to research things and give everything a bit of a backstory, so when we get onto the set we're really prepared. Hopefully that means the audience will believe in the stuff that we deliver."
As the story has created so much discussion, what's your take on the fan reaction?
"Obviously I know about the 'Stendan' fans and they message me every day on Twitter. Now we have these new 'Stug' fans too, so I'm just happy that my name's in both of them!
"It's good that people are interested, and I think any reaction is a good reaction. One of the reasons that we do this job is to get people talking, especially when it comes to quite sensitive issues. I think it can only be a good thing."
Your recent interview on Live With Myleene created a big reaction in particular!
"Well, I think the way that I worded it on Live With Myleene was making people think that me and Emmett were never going to work together again and that would be the end of 'Stendan'. But I just wanted to prepare people that Ste's life doesn't revolve around Brendan. At the same time, now that Ste's going off on this other tangent with Doug, it doesn't necessarily mean that he and Brendan won't be working together.
"I can't say whether or not Ste and Brendan are ever going to get back together, as even I don't know. Ste's life has taken on a new journey which doesn't involve Brendan at this immediate time, but as it's Hollyoaks and as Brendan is a huge scene-stealer, he will probably be turning up in several scenes!"
How does Ste react when he realises that Doug has feelings for him?
"I think he's just confused, shocked and taken aback at first. Since they've been working together on the business, I don't think Ste has fancied Doug or anything like that. He was just happy that he finally had a friend, because he's never really had a close mate who he can get along with.
"Now that it's going down a different path, that completely takes Ste by surprise. His life is going really well at the moment and I don't think he'd even been thinking about a relationship, especially after the year he's had."
There's also another guy called Adam involved, isn't there?
"Yeah, after signing up for the online dating website, Ste has been set up with Adam. But you'll see that Doug starts interfering. They go on one date, and Doug turns up with Texas and completely ruins it. Ste can't understand what his problem is, and he wonders whether Doug just doesn't want his friend to be taken away from him.
"Towards the end of the week, the two of them are having an argument over Adam and Ste just shouts out, 'Are you in love with me or something?!' It's really confusing for him."
We know they share a kiss after that, but Doug is also struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. Will Ste be quite understanding and patient with him?
"I think so, because Ste's dealt with that himself. At first Ste thinks, 'Well, I came out this way and I managed to deal with it'. But then I think he realises - like I do myself - that everybody's coming out story is completely different.
"When it comes to sexuality, some people struggle to deal with it, while others are completely fine and open about it straight away. So as the show addresses Doug's sexuality, it's going to be different from the story we saw with Ste."
You've always had great on-screen chemistry with Emmett. Has it been easy to strike up something similar with PJ?
"When I finish a scene with PJ, I feel exactly the same - completely happy with it. I've managed to watch some of the scenes back that haven't been on screen yet, and I think the chemistry is just as good as what Ste and Brendan have got - if not better because you can see a love story blossoming.
"The good thing about Ste and Brendan was that you just never knew what was going to happen next in a scene. This story is told in a different way, but I think the chemistry's just as strong."
How will this story compare to the Ste, Brendan and Noah story we saw last year?
"When Ste came out of the relationship with Brendan and got with Noah, I think that was a complete rebound thing. Ste did love Brendan deep down and I think he was trying to use Noah to show that he could move on and make Brendan jealous.
"But so much time has passed now, and Brendan and Ste have not even kissed for eight or nine months. So I think in Ste's head, he's completely over Brendan, and it's nice to be able to start a new relationship from scratch and see what happens."
You've said in the past that you thought Brendan was the love of Ste's life. Do you still feel that way?
"There's no denying that Ste loved Brendan, it's just that the situation has turned nasty and maybe Ste does want to forget him. Hand on heart, I still would say that Ste loved Brendan - it just turns out that they can't be together right now. Even through all the bad stuff that Brendan did to Ste, he did love him otherwise he wouldn't have kept going back."
As Ste was redeemed after a domestic abuse storyline, would you like the show to explore a similar path with Brendan at some point?
"I think so, and I think we've dealt with the issue of abuse on the show really well across the board. Ste used to be abused by his stepdad Terry, then we did the story of Ste abusing Amy, and then it was flipped on its head with Brendan abusing Ste. We've told the story that you can go to counselling and there is help out there, so I think there is a chance that Brendan could do the same.
"But it's like the sexuality thing - every single person is completely different and goes down different avenues. It's whether or not that person wants to be helped. I think Brendan secretly likes being the outcast, the evil one and the person who causes trouble, so I'm not sure he'd even want to help himself."
We asked for fan questions and one was whether you'd like to do a Ste and Brendan two-hander episode to resolve some of their issues…
"I'd love to do something like that, but it's really awkward because I'm really proud of the stuff I've done with Emmett, and I'm also really proud of the stuff that I've done with PJ now. So even when I'm talking to the two actors - if I'm talking to Emmett, I feel like I'm cheating on PJ, and if I'm talking to PJ, I feel like I'm cheating on Emmett!
"If I say that I want to do a two-hander with Emmett, then I don't want to upset PJ! It's like real life now - it's getting too complicated. If it's having this effect on me, then I can only imagine what it's doing to the viewers!"
Emmett had his say at the British Soap Awards by telling us that Ste and Brendan were still in love…
"Well, I can guarantee that PJ would probably say something completely different and say that Ste loves Doug now! So I love it - everyone's got an opinion, it's very entertaining and it means that we are doing the job properly."
