Lady GaGa has received a record-breaking 13 nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer-songwriter picked up nods in categories including 'Best Pop Video', 'Best Dance Music Video', 'Best Female Video', 'Best Collaboration' and 'Best Choreography', People reports.

GaGa said: "I'm so honoured for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I'm even more proud it's an unlucky number - 13."

She added: "A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules.

"God put me on Earth for three reasons - To make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn raucous. Thank you, MTV!"

In addition to her own nods, GaGa is also named in five of Beyoncé's nominations for their 'Video Phone (Extended Remix)' collaboration - making a total of 18 mentions in the shortlist.

The 2010 MTV VMAs air live on September 12 at 9pm EST.

Even if Kanye behaves himself at this year’s VMAs, Chelsea Handler, who just announced tonight on her E! talk show that she’s hosting the Sept. 12 event, should provide plenty of morning-after quotables for the blogosphere. So why did MTV choose her? “This has been a huge year for hip-hop and rap, and it is well-known that I have the closest ties with these communities — musically and sexually,” Handler explains. “I am to rap and hippity-hop, what Warren Buffet is to finance, minus the sex.”

The list of stars planning to hippity-hop on down to LA’s Nokia Theater for the 27th annual VMAs next month include scheduled performers Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, B.o.B, and Florence + The Machine, and presenters Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Trey Songz, Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez, and Ne-Yo.

Lady GaGa was the major winner at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, taking home seven awards.

The singer collected six prizes for her 'Bad Romance' promo clip, including the prestigious Video of the Year accolade, as well as the Best Collaboration trophy for her Beyoncé-assisted 'Telephone' video.

Eminem picked up the Best Hip Hop Video and Best Male Video gongs for 'Not Afraid', while Jay-Z and Alicia Keys's 'Empire State Of Mind' clip was lavished with a pair of technical prizes.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber followed in the footsteps of artists including Eminem, Avril Lavigne and GaGa by taking home the Best New Artist trophy.

The only British winner at the annual awards ceremony - held at LA's Nokia Theatre - was Florence and the Machine, whose 'Dog Days Are Over' video won the Best Art Direction prize.

Notable performances at the event came from Eminem and Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Usher, Bieber and Florence.

KANYE WEST's out-of-control ego has been cut down to size - by the young country star he humiliated at the 2009 MTV VMA bash.
Last year the rapper sabotaged TAYLOR SWIFT's victory speech when he stormed the stage to whine about the then-teenager winning the Best Female video award over big favourite BEYONCE.

Millions of TV viewers saw Taylor left visibly upset and witnessed the star-studded audience's open-mouthed reaction following his outburst.

Now Taylor has finally got her revenge - albeit belatedly - by giving Kanye a public dressing-down in a song.

The image of last year's incident was flashed up on stage before she performed her new track, Innocent, which was inspired by the rapper's childish rant.

It had been rumoured that she would perform a song penned by Kanye as an apology for his behaviour, but instead she landed him a body-blow with her own track containing some poignant lyrics.

Taylor sang: "I guess you really did it this time. Lost your balance on a tightrope, lost your mind trying to get it back. It's OK, life is a tough crowd, 32 is still growing up now."

Taylor suggested she was ready to forgive the rapper if he changed his ways. The song continued: "Time turns flames to embers. Minds change like the weather. I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new."

Kanye's reputation has never fully recovered from last year's incident. Even BARACK OBAMA joined in the criticism afterwards, calling him a "jackass" in an off-mic remark.

Before Sunday's ceremony in LA, Kanye apologised once more on Twitter, then his own performance during the awards featured another apology.

Runaway, which he was performing for the first time, included a reference to the incident with Taylor. He rapped: "I always find something wrong, you've been putting up with my ******* for too long."

But then he undid all his good work during the chorus, with a pop at his critics.

He rapped: "Let's have a toast for the scumbags, let's have a toast for the jackass."

I doubt if anybody raised a glass.

The bash was dominated by LADY GAGA, who won eight gongs - seven for hit single Bad Romance.

Her haul is the second biggest in one night and equals A-HA's eight awards for Take On Me in 1986. A year later PETER GABRIEL won ten for Sledgehammer.
