View Full Version : New 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire '
ITV1 has confirmed the details of the revamped New Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, which launches next month.
The hit gameshow, which will still be hosted by Chris Tarrant, introduces three new twists to the format for its twelfth year on air. ITV has promised that the alterations will guarantee "buckets more emotion, more drama and a tension that will grip viewers at home".
The changes to the show include the removal of the Fastest Fingers First round, following a new casting process for contestants, and a new Switch lifeline. When contestants reach the £50,000 mark, the Switch lifeline enables them to change their question if they are not happy with it.
However, the major shift in the programme is the introduction of a "big, bad" ticking clock. Contestants will only be allowed 15 seconds for the early rounds, increasing to 30 seconds for the questions after £1,000.
Speaking about the refreshed format, Tarrant said: "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has proven to be a phenomenal success in the UK and around the world with an enduring popularity. The changes just made to the show take it to a new level of emotion and excitement that even I, in my 12 years of hosting the show, have not seen.
"With a big, bad ticking clock, it’s a whole different ball game on the best show on earth."
New Who Wants To Be A Millionaire starts on Tuesday, August 3 at 8pm on ITV1.

Chris Tarrant's onetime hit gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is to be axed by ITV1 after 13 years due to poor viewing figures.
ITV chiefs are pulling the plug on the regular version of the show because of a ratings slump, despite the success of the live spectacular on Christmas Eve which was watched by 6.5 million people - the show's biggest audience since 2006.
They will now only screen celebrity specials in a bid to create 'event' TV.
According to The Mirror, an ITV source revealed: "We are looking to do fewer shows but make them higher profile. The appetite at the moment is for big specials while the audience has drifted away from the run-of-the-mill instalments featuring ordinary punters.
"It's still a popular brand but we need to make sure it remains fresh and relevant. There's a realisation that having Millionaire on every week for eight weeks perhaps isn't the way forward any more."
The move signals the end of an era for the TV phenomenon which, despite numerous changes to the format over the years, has failed to entice new viewers and annoyed some long-term fans.
The source added: "The changes that were made last year haven't necessarily worked."
Emphasis will now be placed on the celebrity specials, which Gabby Logan and singer Katherine Jenkins have previously appeared on.
An ITV spokesman said: "The first ever live edition over Christmas attracted 6.9 million viewers. We are talking to producers, Sony Pictures, about future episodes."

David Walliams is to appear in a live edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? for Mother's Day - alongside his mum.
It comes shortly after he was the one doing the grilling as the host of a 24-hour panel game marathon for Comic Relief.
The funnyman - accompanied by mum Kathleen - is one of three celebrities taking part in the special edition of Millionaire to be screened on Saturday on ITV1.
Also taking part are Patsy Palmer - partnered by her teenage son Charley - and singer Olly Murs, with his mum, Vicky.
They will be hoping to win money for charity, while some of the money will also be won by a viewer.
Olly Murs said: "I can't wait. I have no idea how much money we will make but I'm sure it's going to be a good laugh and I've got my fingers crossed that we raise lots of money for charity."

Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville, The Fast Show's John Thomson and TV presenter Melanie Sykes will appear in a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? remembrance special to raise money for armed forces charities.
The trio will be seen partnering forces personnel on the Chris Tarrant-fronted general knowledge quiz. Bonneville will join Royal Navy submarine engineer Lieutenant Gary Beels, Sykes will team up with Army medic Major Nicole McCullough and Thomson will partner Sergeant Derek 'Dutch' Holland from the Royal Air Force.
Bonneville said: "I am absolutely dreading my encounter with the Smiling Tormentor, otherwise known as Chris Tarrant. However, I have every confidence that Lieutenant Beels is a genius.
"I only hope that when he realises I am as thick as two short planks he doesn't make me walk one of them."
Bonneville added that he is confident the pair will have "a lot of fun" raising funds for The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
Thomson described the invitation as "a great honour", while Sykes joked that appearing on the show would be "utterly terrifying".
"I'm only hoping that my partner Nicola is as clever as she is brave," she added.
All the money won will be donated to armed forces benevolent charities, in a change from the usual Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? special format where winnings are split with a member of the public.
The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Remembrance Special will air on Wednesday, November 9 at 9pm on ITV1.
