The BBC is bringing back rural drama All Creatures Great And Small, claim tabloid reports.

According to The Sun, BBC director of vision Jana Bennett will confirm the updated series later today.

The original aired between 1978 and 1990 and starred Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy and Peter Davison. Following the adventures of Yorkshire vet James Herriot, the programme regularly pulled in audiences of over 10 million.

It will apparently be brought back for a three-part series, which will be based before the original and titled Young James.

"Young James is inspired by the true story of how the world's most famous vet, James Herriot, came to learn his trade in Scotland," said a source.

The newspaper claims that the BBC is hoping to capitalise on ITV's cancellation of dramas such as Heartbeat with the new show.

All Creatures Great and Small was my favourite childhood programme - so funny and moving.

I don't really want it brought back!

In my humble opinion it was the best TV series ever. Well written, funny, great acting, touching, sensitive, scenery, nostalgic. It had the lot. As if that wasn't enough, the theme music was the best ever TV theme music as well. I still love watching repeats when they come on various channels. I don't think I want it updated......

There's no way it could be bettered - you can't improve on perfection.

My favourite character was Peter Davidson as Tristan.

I think the three of them - Peter Davison, Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy worked so well together and later John McGlynn as Calum Buchanan when he came into it fitted in so well. Not forgetting Helen Drinkwater/Lynda Bellingham, Mary Hignett (Mrs Hall), Margaretta Scott (Mrs Pumphrey) and Tricky Wu! All of them blended in so well together...sorry, I'm off on one now...it brings it all back to me.....I'm going all misty eyed....

Aww...Tricky Wu...I'd forgotten about him (her?). It makes me so nostalgic to hear that name, which was the cause of so much laughter, again.
