Coronation Street bosses have cast a new doctor as part of Natasha Blakeman's storyline.

Actor Oliver Mellor, who is currently filming at the soap's home in Manchester, takes on the role of Gail Platt's new medical centre boss Dr Matt Carter in August.

Although he has only signed for an initial four episodes, sources at the soap indicate to DS that there is a "strong possibility" he will be back for a longer stint within the next few months.

Recent tabloid reports suggest that Natasha - played by former Holby City actress Rachel Leskovac - will become embroiled in a baby storyline which also features Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine).

That was great, and only right too. Gail should know better than to let Nick in! Perhaps she thinks her family are exempt from rules. Very glad he told her off.

She did tell him that he can't go in, he just ignored her, but she should never have mentioned to him that Natasha was with the doctor in the first place

Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has revealed that he would like to explore a darker side to his character Matt Carter.

Weatherfield doctor Matt was originally introduced as part of Natasha Blakeman's exit storyline last summer and he has since been involved in the soap's tram crash disaster and John Stape saga.

Coronation Street sources have recently tipped Matt to play a bigger role on screen in the coming weeks as he gets a storyline of his own.

Speaking to Soaplife, Mellor confirmed: "Hopefully he's going to get one. They're putting it together now and I'm hoping I'll get the chance to show that Matt's not Mr Perfect and has a bit of a dark side."

"I'd like him to have a love interest," he continued. "There are a few possibilities. I mean, the Coronation Street women aren't exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to fit men, are they?"

Last week, it was reported that Matt will embark on a relationship with Tina McIntyre later this year following her recent split from Graeme Proctor.

Insiders also suggested that Matt's union with Tina (Michelle Keegan) later comes under threat when it becomes clear that the doctor has some "skeletons" in his closet.

Proof if proof were actually needed that Corrie is disappearing down the pan. Just what the ailing soap need is another character with dark secrets which no doubt will not remain secret. I suppose we will discover that he has murdered several patients since originally killing the real Dr Matt Carter whom he was having a gay relationship with whil;e also sleeping with the real Mrs Carter who turns out to be one of Kens many love children.

Coronation Street actor Oliver Mellor has claimed that being given an on-screen romance is like getting "a promotion".

Mellor's Dr Matt Carter was tipped to begin a relationship with Keegan's Tina McIntyre earlier in the summer. However, the actress recently admitted that her character is conflicted between Matt and ladies' man Tommy Duckworth (Chris Fountain).

"When Chris and I are in character, we're like rutting stags trying to be the alpha male," Mellor told The Mirror. "Sometimes when the camera stops rolling, we carry that on in the green room and pretend we're competing over Tina.

"I'm sure there are a lot of jealous guys who wish they were in our shoes. Who wouldn't be? Most guys on the Street would like Tina as their on-screen girlfriend and I think, deep down, they all fancy Michelle.

"Everyone has a secret crush on her. But you can't really blame them, can you? There's a reason why Michelle is winning all these sexiest female awards. And she's lovely too. She doesn't have a bad bone in her body."

The 30-year-old continued: "When there's an on-screen romance you obviously have to get a bit closer physically, and you expect a bit of awkwardness. But there never was any with me and Michelle.

"We both like to have fun on set and when we did our first kissing scene I was joking all the day that I'd been eating crab paste and garlic to make my breath stink. She said she'd been eating something even worse. You have to joke about it."

Rating Keegan's kissing, Mellor said that she is "not as good" as his girlfriend Charlotte Bury. He also added that he has yet to meet Keegan's fiancé, The Wanted star Max George.

"I haven't met Max yet but there's really no reason why we wouldn't get on. She talks to me about him a lot, she's very excited about being engaged, and he's just a regular lad doing what he loves - their careers are storming. He's not a bad-looking lad either," he said.

"I don't think Charlotte was too thrilled with the fact my on-screen girlfriend was going to be Michelle Keegan but, let's face it, the doc was always going to get a love interest. As an actor that's what you hope for, so we had spoken about it beforehand, and now she's really pleased for me because it's like a promotion."

Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has admitted that he feels under pressure to live up to his label as a 'soap hunk'.

The actor joined the ITV1 soap as Dr Matt Carter last October. Speaking to The Mirror, the former personal trainer said that he is beginning to get recognised more by viewers.

Mellor said: "Since I joined Corrie, I've been even more conscious of looking after myself. I've heard the word 'hunk' rather a lot in the last year - that seems to be the favourite label for me, and I'm not complaining.

"The Street's hunk is a great title, but I have to live up to it."

The 30-year-old continued: "I've not had any hysterical girls following me but I got stopped in Topshop when I was with my girlfriend and I'm getting recognised more.

"I still find fame strange, though. I'll always stop at the studio gates and make time if anyone's asking for a picture."

However, Mellor claimed that he does not "always enjoy" being used by his friends to get "extra female attention".

"It's flattering but you have to keep your guard up," he said. "Some people don't have the best intentions."

CORRIE’S Oliver Mellor counts his blessings every morning when he walks through the studio gates.

He is the latest “hunk” in a hit TV soap he has loved since he was a lad and already has an army of adoring female fans.

And on top of that, there is the one special job perk that makes him the envy of blokes across Britain – he gets paid to kiss Michelle Keegan.

Oliver’s character, Dr Matt Carter, is currently vying for the attention of sexy Tina McIntyre with rival Tommy Duckworth, played by Chris Fountain. And he is loving every minute of it!

“When Chris and I are in character, we’re like rutting stags trying to be the Alpha male,” laughs Oliver, 30.

“Sometimes when the camera stops rolling, we carry that on in the green room and pretend we’re competing over Tina. I’m sure there are a lot of jealous guys who wish they were in our shoes. Who wouldn’t be?

“Most guys on the Street would like Tina as their on-screen girlfriend and I think, deep down, they all fancy Michelle.

“Everyone has a secret crush on her. But you can’t really blame them, can you? There’s a reason why Michelle is winning all these sexiest female awards.

“And she’s lovely too. She doesn’t have a bad bone in her body.

“When there’s an on-screen romance you obviously have to get a bit closer physically, and you expect a bit of awkwardness. But there never was any with me and Michelle.

“We both like to have fun on set and when we did our first kissing scene I was joking all the day that I’d been eating crab paste and garlic to make my breath stink. She said she’d been eating something even worse. You have to joke about it.”

So how would he rate Michelle as a kisser? Oliver thinks for a moment before replying diplomatically: “She’s not as good as my girlfriend!”

Fortunately for Oliver, PR executive Charlotte Bury, 25, is not the jealous kind and he is thrilled to have been given such a great storyline.

Oliver, who lives in Windsor, Berks, has been dating Charlotte for three years since he “spotted her across the bar over a row of empty tequila shot glasses”.

Co-star Michelle is also blissfully happy with fiance Max George from pop band The Wanted. But the Corrie lovers have not met each other’s real-life partners yet.

“I haven’t met Max yet but there’s really no reason why we wouldn’t get on,” says Oliver. “She talks to me about him a lot, she’s very excited about being engaged, and he’s just a regular lad doing what he loves – their careers are storming. He’s not a bad looking lad either.

“I don’t think Charlotte was too thrilled with the fact my on-screen girlfriend was going to be Michelle Keegan but, let’s face it, the doc was always going to get a love interest.

“As an actor that’s what you hope for, so we had spoken about it beforehand, and now she’s really pleased for me because it’s like a promotion.”

Oliver admits he was starstruck when he joined Corrie 13 months ago. Despite starring in hit shows like Dr Who and EastEnders, he was overwhelmed at meeting the Street’s famous faces.

“I have to say Nigel Havers had quite an effect on me,” he laughs. “My mum was a big fan and still fancies him now, so I grew up with him on my TV. He left just after I joined, so I only met him briefly.

“Being a Red Dwarf fan, it was great to meet Craig Charles as well. I’ve grown up with Corrie – and when you’re sitting eating your bowl of porridge in a room full of stars it’s not always easy to keep cool.

“But now they are like a big family. I know that sounds a cliché but everyone’s been really welcoming.”

Oliver, who worked as a personal trainer between acting jobs and even trained co-star Shobna Gulati, swaps fitness tips with Chris and Debbie Rush.

He says: “Since I joined Corrie, I’ve been even more conscious of looking after myself. I’ve heard the word ‘hunk’ rather a lot in the last year – that seems to be the favourite label for me, and I’m not complaining. The Street’s hunk is a great title, but I have to live up to it.”

His new female fans are not complaining either. “I’ve not had any hysterical girls following me but I got stopped in Topshop when I was with my girlfriend and I’m getting recognised more,” Oliver says.

“I still find fame strange though. I’ll always stop at the studio gates and make time if anyone’s asking for a picture.

“But if my mates grass me up on a night out so they get some extra female attention, I don’t always enjoy that as much as other guys might. It’s flattering but you have to keep your guard up – some people don’t have the best intentions.”

Oliver feared he might have to give up his dream role completely when he broke his leg in April.

He was on a charity motorbike ride in the mountainous and remote villages of Lesotho with fellow celebrities Gethin Jones, Shobna, Darren Gough and Jill Halfpenny. The trip was in aid of Riders for Health, which was supported by motorbike organisation Get On and involved delivering medical support.

SLIPPED

“On the second to last day my bike slipped and I broke my leg,” he says. “I was left behind in hospital while everyone else finished the trip. It was so sad as I was having such an amazing time.

“Doing something like that really puts things in perspective. I have a pretty privileged life and people complain about things like the weather but in Lesotho, they’re dealing with HIV and Aids like we deal with common colds. Even getting water or to a medical centre, people have to walk for hours.

“The break wasn’t that painful but I got pretty emotional with my family, friends and girlfriend thousands of miles away.

“I was so worried about Corrie and how they’d react, because I was supposed to be filming the following week.

“But I got a letter from the production team and they were really understanding. They told me not to worry as my health was the most important thing. Now here I am getting it on with Tina, which I had no idea I’d be doing four months ago.”

So, does he think Dr Matt will beat Tommy in the battle for Tina’s heart?

“I think Chris’s character Tommy has had his nose put out quite a bit by the doc moving in,” he says. “As Tina has just come out of a relationship, some might think she’s on the rebound. Matt has good intentions for Tina though. But Tommy’s not out of the picture yet.”

Coronation Street’s handsome doctor Matt Carter strips off for a magazine shoot – and gets girls’ hearts *racing as he shapes up to be the luckiest man on TV.

Millions of adoring fans will see two sexy soap stars *fight for his affection in scenes which actor Oliver Mellor *described as “great to film”.

Oliver, 30, who has played the GP since last summer – stripped off for Cosmopolitan – and told The People: “I love my job. Most of my friends live for the weekend and can’t wait to finish work but I can’t wait to go to work.”

It’s no wonder. Matt’s girlfriend Tina McIntyre is played by lads’ favourite Michelle Keegan, 24.

And her love rival is Matt’s old flame Jenny Eclaire – former Hollyoaks beauty Elize du Toit, 31. Jenny’s arrival on the Street tomorrow will spark huge tension between Matt and Tina.

Her stirring causes explosive cracks to appear in their relationship.

Oliver, speaking exclusively to The People, said he has loved every minute of being on the legendary cobbles and is *delighted to be involved in some of the upcoming major storylines.

Bosses originally asked him to do only seven episodes but 18 months later he is still there and enjoying it immensely.

He said: “It’s great because Matt dating Michelle has given me the chance to be more than just the resident GP and viewers have seen a different side to him.

“I am one of those annoying *people who really does love his job.

“It can get a bit irritating for my mates especially because they are jealous enough of me working with Michelle.”

Oliver likes to keep in shape in the gym and qualified as a personal trainer shortly before landing the role of Dr Matt. The workouts paid off and his rippling torso is on display in this months’s Cosmopolitan magazine – for the Everyman testicular cancer campaign.

Wearing only a stethoscope and with a few specimen bottles covering his modesty, Oliver has an enviable six pack.

He said: “It sounds strange but I love exercising. I try to go to the gym every day if I can. If I know I have a photoshoot *coming up like the Cosmo one I try to be good and stay off the chips and beer.”

Despite his obvious appeal Oliver has never had two women fighting over him off screen. And he is *perfectly content with dating just the one – his girlfriend of more than three years, Charlotte Bury, 25.

Oliver said: “Actually it would be quite nice to have two girls fighting over me. But I’ve *always been faithful and I have never been out with a bunny boiler.”

PR executive Charlotte thought it was great when Matt started to woo Tina. Oliver revealed: “It might sound weird but she was actually really pleased because it meant I was *getting a bigger storyline.

“Matt was to be involved in a *relationship with one of the central characters.

“Getting my own love interest was a big deal for me. Charlotte saw it as a promotion. We even had a celebration

“She knows I am really happy on Corrie and if I’m happy then she’s happy and it’s all good. Plus while I am working I am more likely to treat her and buy her *expensive shoes and handbags. So she’s even more happy.” The pair met in a bar in Windsor, Berks.

Oliver spotted her across the room and went over to chat her up.

He recalled: “The first thing that *attracted me to Charlotte was her eyes and that’s exactly what I told her.

“I can’t remember my exact words but my chat-up line was something very clichéd and cheesy like, ‘You have lovely eyes.’ In fact, I can’t believe it worked.”

And when we asked Oliver if there could be wedding bells for the *couple in the not-too distant *future he replied with a smile: “Not you as well.”

So has he been getting pressure to tie the knot from elsewhere?

“Well my sister and I are very close and you know what siblings are like. She asks me all the time about it. A couple of my mates have asked me too, although I admit it has been more Charlotte’s friends who have been on at me.

“Seriously though we are both doing really well in our careers at the moment so it’s not something we’re planning to go and do right away. But yes we have talked about it. We’ve even talked about where we would like to get married but I don’t know if we are ready quite yet.

“Our relationship is very strong and there is a lot of time for marriage. We are both career driven so for the moment we are focusing on that.”

Clearly very much in love, Oliver continued: “Charlotte is just great. She is five years younger than me so she keeps me on my toes and keeps me young. She is ambitious and driven and her career is going really well. She has had a few *promotions and I’m really proud of her.”

Does Oliver think Charlotte is more like Corrie’s Tina or Jenny?

He laughed and replied: “I guess you could say she is a good combination of the two. She isn’t snobby. She is very down to earth but at the same time she has a lot of ambition.”

Apart from work and his *girlfriend, Oliver’s other two passions are *exercising and cooking.

While he does enjoy a night out on the town with his friends, Matt’s idea of a perfect evening is staying in with friends and family and eating home-cooked food and drinking good wine.

He said: “I am really close to my family and I love spending time with them. I love juts chilling with friends and family. I really love Christmas – eating too much, drinking too much, *playing silly games and all that.

“I’m a typical man. I always leave my shopping until far too late but I’m *determined to be more organised this year. I’m not sure that will happen, though.

“I love buying presents and Charlotte has expensive taste so I’ll make sure I buy her something extra special this year.”

Female fans casting their eyes over Oliver’s Cosmopolitan pose will agree Charlotte is one lucky lady.

Those hooked on Corrie will have to wait and see who walks off with the cream in the catfight between Tina and Jenny.

Oliver told The People: “Elize plays Jenny, Matt’s snobby ex-girlfriend.

“Basically Tina and Matt are due to go on a triple dinner date with other couples. But one pair can’t make it and then Jenny turns up on her own saying her date can’t make it to the restaurant either.

“She winds Tina up straight away by commenting that Matt is wearing a shirt she bought for him. And it soon becomes clear the pair have a long history together and were an item for quite some time.” Oliver said it doesn’t take long before the simmering tension boils over as posh Jenny labels Weatherfield “a dump” and puts down Tina as “just a barmaid”.

“Tina is not one to hold back and she gives as good as she gets,” he said.

“She won’t have anyone denting her pride and it gets pretty nasty. They were great scenes to film.”

Jenny does not split up Tina and Matt straight away but Oliver said it could be the beginning of the end.

He told the People: “Everything Jenny says just highlights the *differences between the girls, as well as *between Matt and Tina. In the beginning Tina was just what he needed. She is pretty and fun but as things develop he realises she’s not really the woman he wants.

“He’s full of ambition and has *always wanted to go far. He tries to get Tina to be more ambitious but she’s happy being a barmaid and that just shows how different they are.”

Coronation Street actor Oliver Mellor has quit the soap.

The 32-year-old, who has been playing Dr Matt Carter since 2010, finished filming at the ITV show earlier this year.

Mellor told the Sunday Mercury: "There were quite long periods when I didn't appear at all, so I realised it was time to leave. They didn't try to make me stay - they admitted they didn't have any solid plans for the doctor and it would be more of the same.

"I thought, 'Fair enough, you've been great but it's time to go'. They just weren't progressing my character as much as I would like. As an actor you want some kind of consistency and to be busy.

"I wasn't being integrated into the rest of the street. It was great when Matt started dating Tina, but it never came to any real fruition."

Mellor added that Matt's departure is unlikely to be addressed on screen.

He said: "It's a shame Matt doesn't get an exit storyline - they just stopped using him, unfortunately. But they're not killing him off, so you never know, he could return one day."

Mellor is currently busy working on a production of the play A Murder Has Been Arranged.

Former Coronation Street actor Oliver Mellor has opened up about his affair with co-star Kym Marsh.

In a two-part interview with The Mirror, Mellor claimed that the pair were "in love and planned a future together".

Mellor - who played Dr Matt Carter in the ITV soap - explained that they became close during filming, despite being with other people.

He said: "We loved each other and we weren't afraid to say it. It wasn't *something we intended to happen, but we couldn't stop our feelings.

"We planned a future together. We dreamed about me moving up North and living together. We spoke of how wonderful life would be."

However, he stated that Marsh's guilt at hurting her family and marriage to Jamie Lomas led to their eventual split.

"The last thing Kym wanted to do was hurt anyone," says Oliver. "And she knew what we were doing could have serious consequences for everyone.

"But the fact we were both willing to take those risks when the stakes were so high shows how much it meant."

Kym Marsh and Jamie Lomas started dating in 2008, and are parents to daughter Polly. Mellor was in a five-year-relationship with PR executive *Charlotte Bury at the time of the affair.

Talking about how they first got together, Mellor said: "We had a lot to drink and by the end of the night it was just us, Antony Cotton and a couple of others that went on to a casino.

"I sent Kym a text saying, 'snog? X'. I'd wanted to kiss her for weeks. She said yes and we found a quiet spot.

"A few days later I was due to shoot my final scenes before moving south to be in a play. I hadn't been able to stop thinking about that night so I asked Kym to my dressing room for a goodbye kiss."

The actor added: "I don't regret my relationship with Kym but now I am in a real relationship and I'm truly happy for the first time I can see that it was doomed from the start and it took a lot out of both of us."

Oliver Mellor is now dating glamour model Rhian Sugden, while Marsh has divorced Jamie Lomas.
