View Full Version : Nikhil Sharma (Rik Makarem)
SEXY Maisie Wylde has a huge row with boyfriend Nikhil Sharma but doesn’t realise he’s been keeping a huge secret from her.
The gorgeous blonde, who for weeks has been trying to get the factory boss into bed, decides they are taking things too slowly.
She tells her pal Adele Allfrey about their non-existent sex life but the busty factory girl can’t help but gossip to her workmates.
And when he hears them talking Nikhil explodes and storms off to tell Maisie to keep her mouth shut.
An insider said: “There’s something big he’s kept from Maisie. He confesses to his brother and he tells him that if he wants to keep Maisie he’s going to have to come clean.
“Viewers will be pretty shocked when they find out what it is.”
Fans will see Nikhil finally reveal his secret on ITV1 next month.

He could be a virgin, but I'm wondering if he's been assaulted when he was very young. :hmm:
Ohh, very interesting idea, never thought of that :hmm:

I think having Nikhill the victim of abuse or rape would be a good storyline for him
It could be he was once a girl, but had a sex change

It could be he was once a girl, but had a sex changeThere's no way Nikhil could pull off a storyline like that, he's as wooden as they come.
I think he's a virgin.
Since their first appearance in Emmerdale at the end of last year, Sharma brothers Nikhil and Jai - played by Rik Makarem and Chris Bisson respectively - have been a relatively slow-burn family. Nikhil, however, is about to step up a few gears as he finally admits his deepest secret to his brother. Mentally and emotionally drained by its existence, an immense weight is lifted off the younger Sharma's shoulders but how will Jai and Maisie react? We recently caught up with Rik to hear all about his screen relationship with Wylde child Maisie and how his secret is finally exposed.
Nikhil's getting quite close to Maisie at the moment…
"Yeah, absolutely. It's a real liking. What he's seen in her is a complex nature. She's been through quite a tough time and he's recognised that there's a softness inside which is quite appealing to him. She's not just this feisty beautiful girl, she's much more intricate. As much as Nikhil might be able to help Maisie, she might be able to help him."
She's got quite a bit of emotional and mental baggage with her, though. Does that not put him off?
"I think that's part of the challenge. He has a number of issues himself, yet he's gentle and caring. With Maisie, Nikhil realises that he can finally love someone. At this moment in time, they're a very good match."
Maisie's becoming a little concerned by his lack of affection towards her, though…
"Nikhil's becoming aware that Maisie's intelligent enough to know that someone's not quite right and starts trying to acquire more information from everyone in the village. Nikhil knows about it and it starts snowballing. The relationship's rosy but Nikhil starts backing off. Nikhil's been down this road many times before but this time he thinks it's different…"
If it wasn't Maisie, who else would you like to see Nikhil with?
"Definitely Edna! They'd be a delightful couple. No, I joke. It's good when he's challenged by a stronger personality like Debbie and Maisie."
Their relationship takes a turn for the worse next week, though…
"Everything's going so, so well and then they have an argument which results in them breaking up - it has to be something pretty bad to cause it! He's letting greatness walk out of his life! Basically, Maisie turns up at the factory and kicks off because she can't understand why Nikhil's being the way he is and with that, they call time on their relationship."
Nikhil's anger boils over in the factory, doesn't it?
"Nikhil's frustrated that everyone's been gossiping about his relationship with Maisie and especially after the break-up, he's become very self-conscious and paranoid. The factory workers start making suggestions about why Nikhil is the way he is: Is it something to do with his past? Is he gay? It becomes too much for him and he loses it, starts shouting at everybody, squares off with his brother and storms off home."
Then Nikhil confides in Jai…
"Nikhil's deeply distressed and back at the house, Nikhil comes clean with his brother. It's a massive moment in Nikhil's story because - as much as Nikhil won't admit it - Jai's the hero, who's easy with words, easy with the ladies… Everything about Jai is what Nikhil wishes he could be like and Jai's the one person he wouldn't want to find out his secret. The fear of being judged by his brother is immense."
Are you happy with the way the Sharmas have bedded in?
"We've been a slow-burn family, which has been fantastic. It's allowed us to settle, find our feet and cement our brotherly relationship. Now, we're starting to get the bigger storylines which let Nikhil and Jai be people, independent of their heritage. That's what I'm most in love with about the show. We've seen other soaps follow the heritage of a family and make the storylines revolve around that. Emmerdale have brought in a couple of dual-heritage brothers and have focused on them as people - and I think it's truly representative of modern-day Britain."
Was it frustrating to see Effie Woods leave?
"Yeah, we were sad but ultimately I think it's okay to sacrifice a character if it serves the story. There's much more history between the brothers than with the sister, so it made sense to push their story."
So how about that, then?
Emmerdale's Nikhil Sharma's a virgin?!
If for some bizarre reason you missed my original interview, click here to have a read!
Alternatively, read on to find out what Rik Makarem - the actor who plays Nikhil - thought when he first heard about the story twist, whether it affected the way he portrayed the character and how Maisie reacts when she learns the truth...
What was your reaction when Gavin told you what Nikhil's secret was?
"The first thing I thought was, 'Great! What a brave storyline!' This is something that hasn't been discussed in soapland. I immediately thought that there are people out there who have experienced - and still are experiencing - what Nikhil's going through. It's a difficult, traumatic and emotional thing to deal with, so I was excited by the idea of portraying that. And hopefully, it'll connect with some of the audience. It's a very sensitive story which, at first, could appear quite funny and laughable but because it's written and directed so well, I think we've created something that's true, honest and integral to real life."
What would you say to those people that think it can't be the case with Nikhil?
"If you have a good-looking guy or girl, it's much harder to be interested in someone without being judged first. I know - as Rik - when I was younger and potentially seeking love interests from nice ladies, before I'd even opened my mouth, there'd be a judgement about what kind of person I'd be. When you're constantly coming up with that, it's very difficult to overcome. The whole storyline's very endearing."
Has this gone a long way to understanding who Nikhil is?
"Nikhil's uptight in quite a lot of ways and is crying out to be loved. He's as soft as anything behind the hard exterior."
Have you known since the beginning about Nikhil's secret?
"Yeah, about three or four months in…"
Did that affect the way you were playing scenes?
"Absolutely. I had choices - it could have been that Nikhil was over-confident or show the audience that there is a sensitive side to Nikhil but that something wasn't quite right. I've been delighted that the storylines have allowed me to peel back the layers of Nikhil and enable everyone to see that there's more to Nikhil than meets the eye. I didn't go into every scene thinking. 'Nikhil's a virgin', though!"
Where do Nikhil and Jai go from here?
"We actually start to see them be brothers for the first time. Taking the competition, windups and cheeky innuendoes out of the equation, they love each other very much. Jai surprisingly shows that he cares once he finds out. But does Nikhil trust that? Nikhil can't understand why his brother's being so supportive."
Where does this leave Nikhil and Maisie?
"A lot of Nikhil's history is revealed during these episodes. We find out why Nikhil's been the way he's been when his ex-girlfriend Amber turns up. Over the eps, we see a real liberation of Nikhil's character when everything comes out. Once he's wrestled with his past and the fact he's a virgin, he realises that Maisie's who he wants and he decides to fight for her."
How does Maisie react when she learns the truth?
"Nikhil nervously goes around to see her and tells her bluntly that he's a virgin. There's a lot of fear on Nikhil's part because he doesn't feel like a man yet. He's stunned, though, by her reaction - it's perfect. She actually finds it the most endearing thing of all. In that moment, you see just how perfect their relationship can be and what potential there is. Love really starts to blossom and it was a real delight to play."
Do Nikhil and Maisie have a future together?
"I'd like to think so! I can't tell you past six weeks because that's all I know up to! If Maisie does become the first physical interest that Nikhil acquires, it might change his behaviour… I'm not saying that he's going to start walking around all smug but it grounds him. He's overcome a fear and he's on the 'other side'. We'll see a much stronger and complete Nikhil which will give him more confidence and stability in his life."
What else is to come from the Sharmas for the rest of the year? Apparently you have some big stuff on the horizon…
"I'm very excited! I'm truly ecstatic just to be in the programme but to know that you'll be leading the show is an incredible privilege and honour. For both Chris and I, it's absolutely fantastic and I hope that the audience are enjoying what we're doing."

Emmerdale spoiler: Nikhil Sharma is back
Published Sunday, 6th September 2015,
By SoapSquawk
Emmerdale actor Rik Makarem has confirmed he’s reprising his role as Nikhil Sharma later this year.
Fans last saw Nikhil in 2013 when he left the village for a new life in Canada with daughter Molly after the murder of his wife Gennie.
Bosses are keeping tight-lipped about the exact circumstances of his comeback but he will be part of a huge storyline that will make the Sharma family the main focus of the soap.
Rik will start filming later this month with his return aired in the winter.
Speaking about his return, Rik said: “I’m over the moon to be reinvesting in Nikhil. Emmerdale is fantastic at character-driven stories and for any actor this is massively rewarding.”
And series producer Kate told the Daily Star Sunday: “I am thrilled to be welcoming Rik back.”

It is a good idea to bring in good guy Nikhil to help run the factory with Rishi and Kirin. I guess he'll join the Emmerdale musical-chairs game again and start a relationship with a village female. If Paddy goes with Tess, and David goes with Leyla then the options seem limited for now though.
I don't see Jai leaving Emmerdale just yet. Chris Bisson (Jai) was given a new Emmerdale contract recently (announced June 11th 2015) so it looks like he's around on TV for another year. (Worse luck!)
What I think we'll see is a lengthy self-destruction storyline for Jai. The fall has already started with his behaviour causing factory customers to cancel contracts, and now we have the drug taking habit too. I suspect this will be extended into drug addiction, criminal activities for money to get drugs, relationship/family breakdown storylines, etc. So, it looks like a slow kill for bad boy Jai for now.

Emmerdale: Rik Makarem to return as Nikhil Sharma
Viewers promised Sharma drama when Makarem's widower arrives back in the Yorkshire Dales

Emmerdale is to welcome Rik Makarem back into the fold.
Makarem's widower Nikhil Sharma will return to the Yorkshire Dales this autumn. In 2013, Sharma emigrated to Canada with daughter Molly after wife Gennie Walker was murdered following a horrific car accident.
Show insiders have promised "an exciting storyline" but haven't revealed what draws Nikhil back or whether he's welcomed with open arms.
The actor left the soap in 2013 following the departure of his on-screen wife Sian Reese-Williams. At the time he said he took he decision to leave after listening "very closely to my heart" – "I’m naturally ambitious; I believe in taking risks, as that’s how we truly learn about ourselves".
Makarem, who will begin filming his first scenes in September, said: “With fresh energy and wisdom from playing other characters, I’m over the moon to be re-investing in Nikhil. Emmerdale is fantastic at character-driven stories and for any actor, this is massively rewarding.”
Series producer Kate Oates said: “I am thrilled to be welcoming Rik back. Nikhil previously left Emmerdale under sad circumstances as he continued to grieve for his wife Gennie, but with strong family roots still in the village it was inevitable that he would reappear. But with Jai off the rails, Rishi at his wit’s end and Priya flaunting her new-found ambitions, what will he make of the family he left behind?”
Since leaving Emmerdale, Makarem has swapped television for the stage, appearing in the plays Passing By, The Dishwashers and, most recently, Dead Simple.

Emmerdale Spoilers: Nikhil Sharma to return to the village! But why? Rik Makarem teases “powerful” new storylines
September 6th, 2015 by Lynn Connolly

Rik Makarem
There’s great news for Emmerdale fans today as it’s been confirmed that Rik Makarem has rejoined the cast to reprise the role of Nikhil Sharma.
We last saw Rik as Nikhil in the summer of 2013, which was when Nikhil left Emmerdale to start a new life with his infant daughter Molly in Canada…
That of course came after Nikhil’s wife Gennie was murdered by serial killer Cameron Murray, though when Gennie first died, it was believed it was as a result of a car accident.
However, once the horrifying truth came to light, Nikhil decided he simply couldn’t carry on living in the village, given that he was always being reminded of Gennie.

Gennie's funeral
Gennie’s mum Brenda was of course devastated that Nikhil was taking her only grandchild to Canada, however, she remained in touch via Skype, but we would guess that Brenda – who’s played by Lesley Dunlop – will be overjoyed to hear that little Molly is returning with her dad.
http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/brenda-nikhil-emmerdale-460x328.jpg
Brenda with Nikhil
The big question of course is, why is he coming back?
Well, the show’s bosses are keen to keep details of Nikhil’s return under wraps, but as Nikhil’s brother Jai is currently not only alienating more or less the rest of his family – and everyone else in the village for that matter – he’s also losing control of the business…
So will Nikhil feel he has no choice but to give up his life in Canada to come back to Emmerdale to save the Sharma family from financial ruin?
We’ll no doubt find out soon, but on the subject of Rik’s return as Nikhil, Emmerdale’s series producer Kate Oates said, “I’m thrilled to be welcoming Rik back. Nikhil previously left Emmerdale under sad circumstances…
“But with strong family roots still in the village, it was inevitable that he would reappear.”
Oates added, “With Jai off the rails, Rishi at his wit’s end and Priya flaunting her new-found ambitions, what will he make of the family he left behind?”

Meanwhile, Rik said, “I’m over the moon to be re-investing in Nikhil. Emmerdale is fantastic at character driven stories and for any actor, this is massively rewarding.”
He confirmed the happy news that he’s returning to the show on Twitter, telling his followers, “So thrilled about this new adventure & overwhelmed to wake up to everyone’s support!
“Very much looking forward to re-visiting a character I love very much – an attractive and powerful storyline to play.”

Thrilled to hear of his return, had always hoped he would be back someday. I remember when he was around Jai was a much more likeable person - those pre-Charity days when his focus was the factory and needling his brother. Now the tables will be turned, so it should be interesting viewing that's for sure. I wonder if Nikhil can help Jai redeem himself - or has he truly fallen too far for that?
Thrilled to hear Molly will be back as well - wonder if the same little actress will play the part? The few times we've seen her on Skype talking to Brenda it was the same actress.

I hope not either TL. Rishi is one of the nice guys. Rik is
filming now-so could be onscreen.in a few weeks.
If his return is "business-related" - once the
problems start they soon escalate if not
tackled promptly.
Dont pay suppliers -they dont supply.
So no goods to make sweets- no goods
made -no orders fulfilled- no money
recd.
Word gets round firm.in trouble so
less orders/ more delay in payments
recd. Delay in paying wages . Quite
a large workforce!!tho we dont see them.
If firm doesnt keep up loan payments to

Receivers may be called .- which is
usually "end-of!"
Once the first card falls - the rest of
the house of cards can follow quickly.
So Im hoping your prediction about Nikil
coming back to save the day - is correct!
P.s. It depends how fast Jai goes downhill
and what form that takes. If he has a criminal
charge made against him - the bank may
insist on someone else having financial.

Great post MaidMarion....you make so much sense. Unlike Jai`s business decisions lately.
I hope the writers aren`t turning Jai into a drug addict. I know Jai has had such a lousy year, but if he does turn to drugs, then he can say goodbye to any time he spends with Archie.

Win/Win.
If Jai does go to jail, then I bet it will be because of Kirren`s Dad Rakesh. I bet Jai will rue the day he ever let Rakesh back into his life.

the bit I will like best-if it happens that way-
is if it is Nikil who saves the day by getting
the factory back to being a successful
business.
Some of the family even inc his mother have
a bit of a patient & patronising attitude to him
as tho hes less bright than them!
Jai is all top-show and conceited but not
able to be effectively evil.
So sometimes in real-life (and soaps)
the tortoise does beat the hare!!:)
This could be really interesting - I think he'll have become much more confident and his experience in Canada will have given him many more strings to hs bow. Plus he's been a single parent in a foreign country (even though it speaks English) that's a double whammy. He's going to be a very different person to the one we knew before - if he isn't then he's coming back because he failed in Canada - more problems?

I've always thought that Nikhil was the submissive unconfident neurotic one when compared to dominant confident stable Jai. But now Jai has shown that he has a new bullying, addictive, over-confident and unstable personality which is maybe going to bring him and the factory down without intervention? Maybe Jai now has a storyline which involves drug use rehabilitation and therapy and the factory carries on without him, under the guidance of Rishi, with new business from the Granny Clegg's cordial sideline with Kirin and Belle?
I really want Nikhil to return to Emmerdale as a much stronger and dominant character than before. Life experience counts for a big lot in the workplace, even from my own experience. I really hope he's learned a massive amount about life since he's been away 'in Canada' since leaving Emmerdale. Don't let us down, Nikhil!
After the mention of Priya and Rakesh's wedding tonight, I guess we know what originally brings Nikhil back to the village.

Emmerdale: Nikhil Sharma's comeback storyline is revealed
Actor Rik Makarem will make his return to the ITV soap next week
By David Brown
Tuesday 20 October 2015 at 10:13AM
Nikhil Sharma (Rik Makarem) will arrive back in the village next week following a cry for help from dad Rishi. With life at the factory in crisis thanks to Jai's growing dependency on cocaine, Rishi decides that he needs to take drastic action.
With orders going unfulfilled and Priya missing meals to keep up with the workload, Rishi vows to sort out the mess by calling on Nikhil's assistance.
"Jai is out of control," says Bhasker Patel, who plays the patriarch of the Sharma clan. "Rishi thought that Priya could maybe take over, but now that she's skipping meals, he realises that the pressure is too much. He can't afford to lose both his son and daughter."
One secret phone call later and Rishi is being reunited with son Nikhil and granddaughter Molly. But can he convince Nikhil to stick around and help sort out the trouble?
"Rishi doesn't know whether Nikhil will stay for more than a few weeks. He has his own hotel business, which is expanding into Europe. So, in the end, it's going to be his choice."
But regardless of whether Nikhil stays or goes, Rishi seems set upon shaking things up in the workplace. Thanks to a legal loophole, he's able to sack Jai - but does he risk causing a major split in the family if he installs Nikhil as the factory boss instead?
"Well, Jai is not only bringing shame on his family, he's killing himself too," explains Patel. "Sometimes, you have to disown someone to make them realise that they have to sort themselves out."
But it's heartening to know that despite the power struggles playing out on screen, Patel couldn't be happier to see the Sharmas back together again:
"I'm really enjoying Rik being back. He's brought a breath of fresh air and there's a new energy. Following his time in the theatre, his approach to acting is totally different.
"For any actor, it's good to go away and do something else because you end up bringing something new to your character and your scenes. And to have the whole family working together is very nice. That's when the Sharmas are strong."

Rik Makarem has revealed that he isn't returning to the show on a permanent basis.
The actor arrives back on screen as popular character Nikhil Sharma this week after two years away from the ITV soap.
Nikhil is called back to the village by his father Rishi, who is desperate to get the family business back on track. Nikhil's brother Jai has recently caused problems at the sweet factory due to his drug habit, leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces.
Confirming that Nikhil will only be in the village for a guest stint, Makarem explained: "There is a specific reason for Nikhil returning and we'll see how that plays out, but I'm really happy with the storyline. It was absolutely the right decision to be involved in a very successful phase in the show.
"I can only congratulate Emmerdale for how well it's done and hopefully I can match the standard that other people have set!"
Makarem has enjoyed success away from Emmerdale with a number of theatre roles in the past two years.
His return as Nikhil will allow fans to see a new side to the character, who has changed thanks to his business achievements in Canada.
"What we all loved Nikhil for was that he had a tendency to let his OCD come out, but now we've softened that a little bit," Makarem commented. "What we saw was that under moments of high stress, that disorder would really manifest itself. While he's been away, Nikhil has learned how to be a single father and perhaps he's now got a handle on that.
"He's definitely returning as a much more grounded and strong individual. He's also not as rigid as he was before. That was a wonderful quality to play back then, but there has to be this development.
"What I'm really thrilled about is that Emmerdale's producer Kate Oates has allowed Nikhil to take a leadership role in some of the scenes and the storylines. When we revisit Nikhil on screen, that will be quite evident."
Despite the change, there's also a chance that Nikhil's progress could be thwarted as the village holds so many bad memories due to the tragic death of his wife Gennie.
Makarem said: "Nikhil's return opens up a door of many different emotions. It resurrects his feelings about Gennie's death, but also his angry feelings towards Debbie. Potentially that could be traumatic.
"It's also a shock to him when he finds out the news about Jai's drug habit, but his first impression is that the family can sort it. He would rather avoid being part of this family trauma, so that he doesn't have to deal with his own conflicts and history in the village."

Rik Makarem: It's great to be back on Emmerdale – I feel like I've developed as an actor
What's on TV, Friday, 30 October 2015, 10:09am
Emmerdale’s Rik Makarem tells Soaplife how Nikhil’s flying visit home from Canada turns into a longer stay…
What has Nikhil been up to in Canada?
“He has built up an empire of hotels and is doing very well. I think he had to move away from the nest in order to flourish. He has carved out a new life for himself and [daughter] Molly and has managed to move on.”
Is it hard for him to return to the village?
“It is because he was able to block out memories of his wife Gennie’s death while he was away. He had a coping strategy and now we will have to see if he is able to remain strong while he is in the place where she was killed.”
Has Nikhil changed?
“He has. He used to let his OCD come out, but that isn’t so pronounced now. I think being a dad has given him a reason to get a handle on that. He is much more grounded and less rigid than he was before.”
What does Nikhil think when Rishi says he wants him to take over at the factory?
“Nikhil is clearly the right man for the job, but he wants to stay in Canada and would rather avoid being part of this family drama. He would rather Priya took over, but the situation has got so bad, he has to stay.”
Even after being punched by Ross (Michael Parr)?
“That comes as a bit of a shock, but it is because he is having an argument with Debbie [Charley Webb]. Nikhil still thinks Debbie is responsible for Gennie’s death…”
Is he pleased that his daughter Molly is surrounded by family now?
“Absolutely. There has probably never been a right time to begin that process, but I think they have been in touch via Skype, etc. Nikhil is so used to looking after Molly on his own, I don’t think he realises how much of a help it could be to have family around.”
Are you pleased to be back?
“Of course, this is a wonderful show and it is in a great place at the moment. When I left, I felt there was nowhere for Nikhil to go, but I am thrilled about how he has changed and will be driving storylines and emotions.”
What has changed?
“I’ve changed in the two years I’ve been away. I’ve gone off and done a number of different projects and feel that I have developed as an actor. As for work – well, the canteen food is excellent now. I do love it when a sweet potato appears and they even have gluten free bread now.”
Who were you most pleased to see?
“Matthew Wolfenden [who plays David Metcalfe] and I are friends and I really enjoy working with him. Bhasker Patel [Rishi], Fiona Wade [Priya], Lesley Dunlop [Brenda], Chris Bisson [Jai]… It’s great to see everyone who is part of the Sharma family crew.”

Emmerdale's Nikhil Sharma and Ross Barton will go head-to-head in 'exciting' new feud, promises actor Rik Makarem
The estranged Woolpack character Nikhil has only just returned to the Dales but is set to leave again in the New Year.

Emmerdale's resident bad boy Ross Barton has proved he's not a force to be reckoned with after shooting Robert Sugden .
Unfortunately for Nikhil Sharma, he's oblivious to his dark side when he returns to the Dales after two long years away - and it's not long before the two are at loggerheads.
Nikhil fled the village back in 2013 after Debbie Dingle’s psychopath boyfriend Cameron killed his wife Gennie.
Although he has come back a changed - and very rich - man, he can't forgive Debbie for the past, putting him in Ross' bad books.
“If you were put in Nikhil’s shoes and you knew that someone was partly responsible for the death of your wife, could you really forgive them?" actor Rik Makarem explained to the Express. "What I’ve come to conclude is that at this part of playing him is that this is one part that he can’t. There will be no forgiveness in that.”
The bad blood causes Ross to lash out at Nikhil over a pint at the Woolpack - and by the sounds of things, the drama doesn't stop there.
Admitting it probably wasn't the wisest idea to start a fight with an attempted murderer, Rik added: "[Nikhil] obviously has no idea of Ross’ true personality and actually the circumstances where Ross punches him catches Nikhil by surprise. I can promise you [what's about to happen] is exciting!
"It’s actually quite a sad situation. Here you have this man who’s been away form the village for quite a long time and has been asked to stay by his family, by obligation, and have to dug up all the depths of his emotions in regards to his deceased wife Gennie. In dealing with that, and facing that, Debbie is the demon in this situation. We’ve set something up so we’ll have to see what happens.”

It's brothers at war in Emmerdale next week, as Jai and Nikhil Sharma have an angry punch-up.
The pair come to blows as Nikhil (Rik Makarem) grows increasingly insecure over his relationship with Leyla Harding, fearing that she might prefer to be with Jai instead.

Jai punches Nikhil
Upcoming episodes will see Nikhil agree to marry Leyla (Roxy Shahidi), after she pops the question while delirious and unwell at the hospital.
The embarrassing moment leaves Leyla mortified once she comes to her senses again, but it later turns out that she has no need to worry when Nikhil excitedly agrees to a wedding!

Nikhil and Leyla celebrate their engagement
The couple are clearly getting carried away since they've only been together for a matter of weeks, so their decision doesn't earn much support from their loved ones. Jacob and David are both particularly concerned that Leyla could be making a big mistake.
Things soon become even more complicated when Jai (Chris Bisson) makes a sudden return to the village, revealing that he checked himself into rehab for a while and now wants to concentrate on regaining his family's trust.
Clearly impressed by Jai's positive attitude, Leyla shares a highly-charged moment with him and it seems that she still isn't quite over their past relationship. Oh no, Leyla - just when we thought you were making progress!

Jai reveals that he's checked himself into rehab
When Nikhil later makes plans to go back to Canada for work, he books Leyla a ticket too - but she can see straight through his efforts and knows that it's only because he doesn't trust her around Jai at the moment.
With tensions running high, it's not long before the Sharma brothers end up furiously punching each other - which only piles the pressure on Leyla as she realises that it may be time to make a major decision.

Spoilers last year said Nikhil was only around for 2-3 months, gone by around Feb 2016. Actor Rik Makarem has done theatre stuff recently.
What I can't really get right now is why Nikhil has been saying in the latest Emmerdale episodes that he's only going to his Canadian job for a few weeks or so? Nikhil's business empire seems to be based in Canada but extends worldwide? The whole Nikhil storyline for him right now in Emmerdale village seems completely barmy to me right now. Just why would this worldwide business "big" guy return like this to our favourite Yorkshire village and try to get it on with his brother's ex-girlfriend?
Do the latest Emmerdale episodes mean that the Nikhil character has an open plan option as a guest or permanent member of ED after a few weeks time?
I note that character Jai has been voted on the latest DS member opinion poll to be the least (out of 75 ED characters!) favourite for 2016. Hurrah! Sense really and finally prevails somewhere in this world of ours! haha!

Emmerdale star Rik Makarem has admitted that it took him a while to consider whether returning to the show was the right choice.
The actor's second stint with the ITV soap is drawing to a close and tonight's episode of the soap will see his character Nikhil Sharma make a big decision about his future with Leyla, following Jai's return.
Makarem returned to the show last autumn after two years away, but always made it clear that it was only ever on a temporary basis.
Speaking on This Morning today (February 19), Makarem revealed that he was initially unsure over whether to come back at all.
"It took a couple of months to really consider whether it was the right choice," he said.

Nikhil and Leyla celebrate their engagement
"When you are stepping back into old shoes, you want to add something to it and bring more layers into the mix. Kate Oates's vision was very appealing and it felt like a victory to go back and reignite the character.
"I did propose to Kate at the time that it was the right thing to do a short stint. It was only a short term visit to offer something new with my character and to whip up some storylines for other interesting characters.
"Part of my decision for not staying with the show on a permanent basis was because I decided that 2016 really has to be the year where I get the music and songs that I am writing in front of the correct A&R people."
Dramatic scenes in tonight's episode will see Nikhil have a furious fight with Jai as the pair come to blows over Leyla. The events will then prompt Nikhil to head back to Canada for good.

Jai and Nikhil fight
Discussing the lead-up to Nikhil's exit, Makarem said: "Jai's return triggers Nikhil's paranoia.
"Nikhil being back in the village was a surprise to everyone, including me as an actor. He has enjoyed this whirlwind romance and reconnecting with his friends and family with a new sense of gravity from his time away.
"He is head over heels for this girl but there are a few little signs saying it isn't going to be right."

TW:
I really don't understand why someone so well-travelled and worldwise as Nikhil would want to settle for Emmerdale's Leyla? Particularly when Leyla is Jai's ex-girlfriend? How odd is that [maybe just another barmy Emmerdale KO plot-device?]?

Emmerdale star Rik Makarem is already leaving soap to focus on music career
The actor who only just returned back to the show last autumn has revealed his dreams to write music for pop stars like Olly Murs and Adele
Emmerdale star Rik Makarem has revealed his plans to take time out from the soap despite only just returning late last year.
The actor played Nikhil Sharma in the soap who fled to Canada in 2013 following the tragic death of his wife Gennie Walker (Sian Reese-Williams).
He made a surprise return but now says he's ready to leave again to focus on his song-writing career: "I just decided that 2016 really has to be the year that the songs that I write, and music that I write, I need to get them in front of the correct A&R people."
Rik also said both Olly Murs and Sam Smith were at the top of his wishlist of pop stars to write music for and joked with Ruth and Rylan: "Anybody got their numbers?"
In tonight's episode of the soap, Rik's character Nikhil wants to leave the Dales with his fiancee Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi), but his brother Jai (Chris Bisson) is in love with her and doesn't want them to go.
The prospect of them leaving is a step too far for Jai and he ends up in a fight with Nikhil who taunts his brother in scenes set to air tonight: "You think it's you that she wants? Can't wait for me to go so you can pounce?"
Nikhil punches his brother square in the face before Jai returns the jab and their father is forced to separate them.
Rik had to explain to Ruth and Rylan that it was all a show fight for the cameras with no actual contact being made: "I was quite proud of that one," Rik said, "It's more intricate than you think, it takes about an hour and a half before it gets working right.
"I didn't hit Chris Bisson no," he laughed as he showed off his moves before teasing viewers about the explosive scenes.

I know we have a lot of one parent families because actors decide to do something else and they are entitled to do so, of course, even if it causes problems for what might have been a very happy family unit. I was aware that Rik was not intending to be around for long and just for once I am glad that they showed that maybe Leyla was not ready yet for marriage to him and that Nikhil left before they got married etc ... though I am gutted ... :(

I think Nikhil was only ever meant to come back for the short-term, maybe as a sweet factory storyline fill-in for some time whilst Jai [actor Chris Bisson] took some paternity leave?
Actor Rik Makarem seems to prefer theatre acting, however.
I thought Nikhil and Leyla made a good possible couple though. However, Jai and David seem to be longer-term characters in Emmerdale for now...
Sad to see Nikhil go again. Loved the chemistry between him and Leyla, and the banter between them and David. Nice an light hearted, makes a change from the other heavy storylines!
