Red topped the 64th annual Tonys, taking home six trophies, including one for best play. Memphis won four awards, including best musical.

It was a star-friendly night, hosted by Promises, Promises star Sean Hayes. Sunday night's ceremony began with Broadway newbie Scarlett Johansson winning best performance by a featured actress in a play for her role in A View from the Bridge. Catherine Zeta-Jones took home the Tony for best performance by a leading actress in a musical for her Broadway debut in A Little Night Music. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis also went home winners for best leading actor and actress in the play Fences (which took the award for best revival of a play).

The evening was filled with performances from the season's Broadway hits, including Fela!, American Idiots and La Cage aux Folles. Also on hand to perform high-energy solos were Glee stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele. There was even a long, lingering kiss between Hayes and Promises, Promises co-star Kristin Chenoweth — an apparent dig at a Newsweek article that argued that gay actors rarely can pull off a convincing straight role.
