After a chilly start to the month Britain can look forward to "ice cream weather" in the week ahead, a forecaster has said.
Many motorists awoke to find their car windows frosted over as overnight temperatures dropped below zero across the country this week.
Now warmer winds are bringing weather more typical of May, with the mercury predicted to pass 20C in some places by the middle of next week.
Southern and eastern England are expected to see the best conditions, but temperatures will improve throughout the UK and over the weekend there will be highs of around 16-17C and the weather will continue to get warmer after that.
Rachel Vince, a forecaster with MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "By Wednesday to Thursday, daytime temperatures could be into the low 20s.
"It will be fine and settled with some nice long sunny days. It's almost ice cream weather, like we had in April.
"There's a general pattern of temperatures picking up across the UK. It will be noticeably milder for everyone."
After an all-too-brief sunny spell in April, Britain has shivered in unseasonably cold conditions so far this month.
North-westerly winds have brought cold air from the Arctic - as well as the volcanic ash clouds from Iceland that grounded many flights and temperatures have been 2C to 4C below the average for this time of year, plunging as low as minus 6C in Altnaharra in the Scotland Highlands on Tuesday night.
The wind is now coming from the west and south-west, bringing milder air from across the Atlantic, as well as improving temperatures, this should mean less disruption to air schedules as the volcanic ash cloud will be blown in the opposite direction.
Problem is, it never lasts more than a couple of days :(

was in manchester the other day and all the women were in like little summer dresses as it was really sunny in the morning, it then started raining and went really cold! Shows how unpredictable the great british summer is!
Im quite tanned already my parents say I dont need to go on holiday with them this year lol!

Im going to Ireland at some point so hoping the weather will be good over there as well! My cousins are keeping me updated and its very similar to what we got at the moment so fingers crossed.
It was cloudy today but still sunny, I hope its better tomorrow so I can sunbathe more, Ive found my ipod as well so I'll be able to sunbathe for longer without getting bored :p

Yeah it has been nice here.. bit cloudy today with some drizzle but warm.. it is to clear up at the weekend with temp in mid 20s

im hoping that the weather stays good for the weekend as i am at a sailing endurance even in southport! i love the day, but im just suipporting this year as im officially two old for junior events now im 21, not that my abilities would have helped any team! im more of a liability!
Today was quite hot, apparently tomorrow will be hotter :D

If you are in Frankfurt by the Main river, then you have hot weather with temps over 30 C to look forward to over the next couple of weeks. Guess you don't do heat and sun :( I do :D
Just had a look for all of Germany and basically it is the same all over, hot and sunny for the next 2 weeks :cheer:
I don't, perhaps yet; I'll hopefully acclimatise myself to it, but I've only been here a week! I've become so, so tanned already, despite wearing lots of suncream! In my family runs an allergy to the sun, so I'm hoping being here won't bring it out! My current feeling is: "when will it stop?!" but I guess it stays here longer than in England where there's one nice day a year! I'll be in work soon enough anyway (tomorrow) so can hopefully avoid it :D

Love it, nice and hot and sunny. No energy, but hey, who cares lol. Forecast says it is getting cooler to mid twenties in a couple of days and some rain, so Tori, your wish should come true :)

you can tell theres something dodgy going on with the weather when theres a hosepipe ban in the north west of all places! its was very hot again today, id like some rain to clear the air, its very humid like ye say abbie.

It was nice this evening. Walked the mile and a half (ish) home from where I was. :) Had a good day. While we were there a guy who ran across the green in his underwear. And then ran back again, leapfrogging over his friend (and falling over) before going back to join his friends. :lol: So funny. He must of lost a bet!

I just spent 17 days in Germany with this nearly everyday (and that was in the shade)... Coldest day was 28 degrees, was totally amazing and I am freezing now I am back in Ireland... the nights in Germany were warmed than this brrrrr!!
Welcome back, Siobhan, hope you had a great time. Weather a little cooler today, hope it is where Tori is but I think it is going to heat up again in a couple of days. :)
It's cooler here - it rained this morning and is still hasn't warmed up... yay! it was only 26 deg in the night last night, i'll die when I get back to england!
Just checked and on Tuesday temperature is up to over 30C again and will stay in upper 20s for another week or so
The weather is so up and down at the moment :(
Temperatures are definitely much lower now and it is pouring down with rain. Good for the gardens and parks I guess but I would like the sun to come back again, maybe not so hot as it was but warmer again and dry :(
Finally we are beginning to see sunshine and not just wet, warm days...

ah the usual :lol: the only difference between summer and winter in Scotland and Ireland? The rain is warmer in summer

Been thinking of you and that you probably are a lot happier now then you were a couple of weeks ago :) Forecast for my area is still a fair amount of rain but more sunshine on Sunday and slightly warmer again

You might be surprised to know that it is dull and raining here today.. shocked!
changeable here today but definitely warmer than yesterday and a little brighter, sun breaks through the clouds more and weather is meant to improve more for the weekend. :D
Summer is over, autum has arrived :( Dark cloudy sky, rain, temperature no more than 19/20 C and going to be like this for rest of the week, just as well I am off to Spain in a few days, need more warmth and sunshine before the year is over
i think that summers back! im sunbathing in the garden with suncream on and last ight i had a barbeque! just helping dadwith the gardening. We have to fill in some of the holes that rex has dug up!
I was about to say summer was over ages ago, but today its actually been quite warm!!
yes, in UK it seems that way, spoke to family in Huddersfield who had a nice day too
