my mum just told me that the announcement came in the middle of The One show, and they then showed the news till 9.30 replacing Eastenders. Bad times. They could still have put it on BBC 3 at 10pm. Most of you probably already know by now, but the announcement was that Cameron has become PM. :( very unhappy news.

eastenders is on tomorrow (wednesday) at 7.30, i was getting mad waiting an waiting for it to come on.
I cannot believe that people should be so shocked that Deadenders was dropped for something as crucial as a new Government. I dont notice anyone complaining that Holby wasnt shown either:D

The changing state of play in British politics has tonight led to last-minute schedule changes on BBC One.
As Labour's Gordon Brown officially tendered his resignation and Conservative Party leader David Cameron became the UK's new prime minister, the network switched to breaking news coverage and the planned lineup was abandoned.
The broadcaster began transmitting a BBC News channel simulcast fronted by David Dimbleby as Brown announced his decision to stand down. The special coverage took the place of scheduled episodes of EastEnders and Holby City before drawing to a close at 9pm, allowing crime drama Luther to air as intended.
ITV1, meanwhile, chose not to run with a news special and instead aired Children's Hospital and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? as planned at 7.30pm and 8pm. However, a short update hosted by Mark Austin aired just before The Bill at 9pm. Additionally, earlier in the evening, ITV's 6pm regional news update was scrapped to provide extended coverage as Brown's resignation looked likely.
BBC Two, Channel 4 and Five have tonight stuck with regularly scheduled programming.
Meanwhile, CNN International has cancelled its regular news coverage in order to provide updates on the UK's shift in power.

Actually I was going to ask about Holby as I do my ironing during it!! Now the family have no ironed clothes as last night's programming made me fall asleep.

something as crucial as a new Government... they showed cars arrived for like an hour!!! they didn't have to have it LIVE for that long.. Thank God for RTE TV.. EE was really good BTW... I won't comment on it as it is not showing in UK til tonight
Not just any new government Shiv nut the first Coalition Government in 70 years and the first time the Liberals have been in government since Lloyd George. As you probably noticed my remark was a bit tongue in cheek. It was just the thought of all the EE fanatics jamming the switchboard of the BBC because the BBC replaced their daily dose of depression with CamerClggyBrowngate.
Think been Irish, for me it is not such a big deal.. we had coalition and we had no government for a while.. as the old saying goes, been there, done that, wore the t-shirt...

thank you
i love the fact that Cameron has been prime minister for five minutes and he has already annoyed the majirty of the country by moving eastenders!!
Waterloo Road has been dropped tonight in favour of holby city.
when is waterloo road gonna be on then?
not next week anyway as Holby have a double episode, so no body knows. dont see why it should be that programme that always ends up being rescheduled.

Why two weeks? whats happening next week?
How dare the BBC show Holby in place of Waterloo Road. They shouldnt mess about with the schedules. After all we are licence payers. Last night they cancelled my beloved Eastenders for a programme about some guy moving from London to Scotland and some other posh guy moving from one part of London to some terraced house. It must be a dodgy area because the police are always hanging about outside it. Just who do the BBC think they are. Its not as if they were as important as Dame Peggy of Walford. I missed seeing Britains top soap because of these two nobodies. Bet we never hear about them again. EE is a national istitution and must never be cancelled for such trivia. I along with all my EE Fan Club over on DS have written to The Prime Minister to complain about these two blokes dissing Eastenders and appearing on prime time TV.Maybe they thought us EE fanatics are thick and we wouldnt notice any different but we werent fooled. They looked too happy to be in Eastender except that Scottish Bloke with the two kiddies and his wife who were evicted from their house by the psoh bloke. Report ITV to Ofcom as I think this was a part of their conspiracy against Easties

BBCBBC One has announced that it will drop tonight's instalments of Waterloo Road and DIY SOS.
Following yesterday's election coverage, last-minute plans will see Tuesday's scheduled Holby City air tonight at 8pm after EastEnders, which was also postponed from last night.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Waterloo Road will resume on Wednesday, May 26 in its usual 8pm timeslot. DIY SOS is yet to be rescheduled.

Fans have criticised the BBC's decision to postpone EastEnders earlier this week.
Tuesday's edition of the soap was moved to Wednesday after the channel decided to cover Gordon Brown's resignation and David Cameron's instalment as prime minister.
The Daily Mail reports that the BBC has received over 1,000 formal complaints about the move from viewers.
The BBC has now defended its decision in a statement, saying: "The events that unfolded on May 11, 2010 will have a major significance for the whole of the UK. Gordon Brown's resignation was of national importance. This also started proceedings of installing a new prime minister and the first coalition government in the UK for 70 years.
"As a public service broadcaster we are expected to cover such events and viewers come to BBC One to experience such moments."
Nearly nine million people watched the politics coverage.
How sad that 1000 EE fanatics saw fit to complain to the Beeb.
I agree it's sad, and I'm speaking as an EE fan.
I was not best pleased when they cancelled the soaps, if I want to watch breaking news, I switch to the news channel, but I would not complain
Not everyone has the facility to switch to a News Channel. I agree with the BBC that as a public service broadcaster they are funded by the licence payer and have a duty to report such important events.
I too am a soap fan but there are some things more important than missing an episode of a 2nd rate soap which will be repeated, shown on BBC3 and available on the BBC iplayer. There wasnt as much fuss made about Holby being postponed
But not everybody can watch the repeat, due to the time it is being shown and not everyone can watch BBC iplayer. I tend to wait for the Sunday omnibus, if I miss that, tough luck, I read on here to know what is going on
Yeah, it does make it awkward for people who can't catch the repeats or watch iPlayer.
But not everybody can watch the repeat, due to the time it is being shown
Oh yes I forgot EE's core audience of 13 yr olds would be in bed at that time. Presumably the vast majority of the fanatics who complained did so by email and would therefore have had access to to iplayer. The same argument could be used by saying not everyone had access to BBC News 24. The simple fact is that a soap was replaced by a program of major national importance and lets face it no matter which soap it is its not to hard to catch up with it even if you miss the odd episode. In fact by the looks of Corrie tonight I will be missing quite a few episodes of it in the coming weeks

I'm with you on this one Alan. A change in government affects everybody in this country, whether they voted or not. People would only complain if the change to programming didn't happen. You just can't win.

I've got one thing to say to those complaining about EE being postponed. If those old enough to vote got of their fat lazy a$$es and voted for the policies not the slimeballs in the suits Labour and Mr Brown would still be in Government and there would be no need to mess around with the tv programmes.

If Brown and his cronies hadnt gave away all our gold, put billions into the banks causing every family in Britain to be in debt then he might still be in power. Had his liar in chief Alastair Campbel and the Lord of the darkness Peter Mandleson not tried to wipe everyones eye the Labour Party may have had a chance of a coalition with the Lib Dems. Browns mask slipped by calling Mrs Duffy a bigot when she was probably voicing the views of the silent majority.
That would be me and Dutchgirl,, we are in Holland and can not get iPlayer..
But can you get BBC3 or watch the repeat on Sunday BBC1.

Bugger you There should never have been a coalition with the Lib Dems There is no place in a general election for them or independant parties. it either has to be Labour or Tory. I am furious of the treatment of Brown as the public debate was the worst thing to happen to British politics. if anything they shold have let the Tories in with theeir 306 seats. it's a bitter pill to swallow but one that the voters would have acepted andin four years time there wil be another lanslide victory for Labour.

Alan I would never fall out with you. 'm sorry for the bugger you coment but I'm more angry at those who didn;t vote than those who did. I'm a Thatcher the milk snatcher surviver. Being scottish we still bear the scars on what The Iron Lady and her goverment did to us north of the border. I was never a Blair fan but i supported the labour policies. if John Smith has lived Tony Blaiir would never have made it to number 10. Gordon Brown's downfall was his people skills. if Blair had been involved in the debates he would have washed the floor with Cameron and Clegg. Now we are goiing to face cuts in education, health and defence. William Hague is Foriegn Secetary and was against the Iraq war from the begining. What will he do pulll the troops out of Afghaniistan and leave us with egg on our face and relations with Obama in tatters.
What politician say or do when in opposition bears no relation to what they say or do whn in power. If we were to pull our troops out of Afghanistan now then the sacrifices made by over 250 sons, husbands and brothers would have all been for nothing. Hague will change his tune now he is in power. Tony Bliar and Alastair Campbell were the worst things ever to happen to Britain. I do have a wee bit of sympathy for Gordon Brown as Bliar left him with a poisoned chalice. That sai however we must remember tit was Honest Gordy who as Chancer of the Exchequer who sold off the Gold Reserves at a knockdown price. It was the same son of the manse who reduced real spending on our armed forces for years leaving them criminally short of helicopters and resources.

Alan you are one of my best friends on here and one of a number or members who I have a lot or respect for but we will always disagree in politics. For my own personal gain Gordon Brown was the best thing that happened for me. He was a brilliant chancellor and without his tax credit i wouldn't have the standard of living I have now. To me Labour will always be for the working man and Tories will be for the tof's. I was 11 when Magigie entered number 10 and I witnessed Callaghan, Foot and Kinnock trying to over power her but none of them had the backbone to successed.... I worry now how long it will take the Labour party to regroup and be strong enough to support the new leader.

I remember you once telling me never to argue about football or politics as it was the best way to lose friends. I disagree that the Tories are the party for the toffs just because most of them went to public school. Labour rely on working class people to vote for them no matter what. A lot of Labours ideas like helping single mothers get back to work are great in principle but fundamentally flawed in reality. As part of my job I go to houses to interview people about their employment and living conditions. The number of houses I go to where they have their 50inch plasmas and boozy lifestyleand flash car outside yet live on benefits is amazing. There is something wrong with a system that people are much better off not working and claiming state benefits than someone who has worked all their lives and paid taxes. I know a bit about your circumstances and know this does not apply to you and indeed you and people like you are proof of the success of Gordys plans. However the image of Tax Credits and benefits for single parents is tarnished by the thousands who abuse the system.

Alan... I agree this was important but they showed nothing for about an hour... did they really need to be live for that long??? show the important bits but a view of Buckingham castle was not important and taking waffle to "fill" in the time was pointless... I didn't miss EE cause I have it on RTE but I think the whole time was a pointless waste of tax payers money

I agree that there was a whole lot of waffle but what else could they do. This was live television. It was not run to fit in with the BBC's schedules. It was better to do what they did do rather than keep interrupting the programmes to bring snippets of the unfolding events.
Imagine the emails to the beeb if Deadenders had been interrupted halfway through to bring this breaking news story.
True.. there wasn't much they could do but like it or not EE is their most popular show and they could have shown EE and then showed highlights later
True.. there wasn't much they could do but like it or not EE is their most popular show and they could have shown EE and then showed highlights laterEE is a popular show but the resignation of Gordon Brown and David Cameron taking over the government were items of National Importance and the Beeb quite rightly postponed an episode of EE to show something which was more important to the majority of people in the UK. At the end of the day EE is only a soap.
