The release date for Batman 3 has been confirmed by Warner Bros.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the still untitled film will be released on July 20, 2012.

Few of details are available about the planned sequel other than the fact that director Christopher Nolan and writer David Goyer will return.

Nolan's more realistic take on the Batman mythos has insiders speculating that villains such as Mr Freeze, Killer Croc and Clayface will not be in the movie, though insiders are hoping The Riddler will make an appearance.

The release date was announced almost two years after The Dark Knight set box office records.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been tipped to join the cast of Batman 3. According to reports, Christopher Nolan is looking for the actor to play the role of the Riddler.

The actor, who worked with Nolan on the set of Inception, is said to be the first choice for the part.

"Chris really dug Joseph [as an actor]," a source told Hollywood Life.

"There was a joke at first between them that Joseph wanted to read for Batman 3 and things heated up as filming continued."

The insider added: "It's not 100% confirmed that he's getting [the role of The Riddler] but there's certainly talk about it. Joseph is definitely on the shortlist."

Christopher Nolan will begin filming Batman 3 next March, according to a US journalist.

Los Angeles Times reporter Geoff Bucher revealed that he would be probing the Inception director about the follow-up to 2008's The Dark Knight at the Hero Complex Film Festival this weekend, and seemingly confirmed when shooting on the much-anticipated sequel would commence.

Bucher wrote on his blog: "The future looks fascinating for this 39-year-old auteur, and I plan to ask him about the third Batman film, which starts shooting in March."

Warner Brothers recently announced that the third instalment of Nolan's Batman franchise will be released on July 20, 2012, almost four years after The Dark Knight broke box office records.

Nolan has confirmed that the role of the Joker will not be recast following the death of Heath Ledger.

Sir Michael Caine has revealed that Christopher Nolan's next Batman movie will begin production next year.

Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth in the superhero series, told DS: "I think they're going to do it in April, that's about as much as I know."

Discussing his role in Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio's upcoming sci-fi thriller Inception, he said: "In this I play Leonardo's father-in-law, but also the professor who teaches him about going into dreams, so I'm really quite clever!"

Inception opens in the UK on July 16, while the next Batman is due in cinemas on July 20, 2012.

Christopher Nolan has said Batman 3 won't see a return of the Joker, the maniacal character played by the late Heath Ledger in the last movie.

The director wouldn't disclose what villain or villains might take on the Caped Crusader in the follow-up to 2008's The Dark Knight, which is due out in 2012.

But he revealed the Joker wouldn't be back, saying: "For me, Heath was the definitive Joker. It wouldn't feel appropriate to readdress that character."

Heath's performance earned him an Academy Award a year after he died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008.

His death stoked fan interest in The Dark Knight, which topped one billion dollars at the box office worldwide.

The next Batman film will be the third in the current Warner Bros incarnation of the franchise, which stars Christian Bale as the vigilante superhero.

It would be very hard to recast the role

Three stars of Christopher Nolan's Inception are reportedly competing for a role in his third Batman outing.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Tom Hardy are being considered for the part of the Riddler in Batman 3, a source at Warner Bros told ComicBookMovie.com.

It is thought that the success of Inception and the insistence of Nolan means that one of the actors will fill the role.

Last month, Inception and Batman star Michael Caine revealed that filming on the latest film in the franchise is to begin in April 2011.

Christopher Nolan could reportedly shoot part of the third Batman film in New Orleans.

According to Comic Book Resources, studio Warner Bros is looking to take advantage of the tax incentives the city has to offer movie studios.

Warner recently wrapped production on The Green Lantern in New Orleans and apparently wants to keep its relationship with the city's filming office.

If a deal goes through, almost half of the principal photography on the next Batman movie will take place in New Orleans.

Nolan's sequel to The Dark Knight is expected to begin production between March and April 2011 for a summer 2012 release.

Christopher Nolan has said that he hopes to make the next Batman film technologically groundbreaking.

It was revealed yesterday that the upcoming Warner Bros picture is to be called The Dark Knight Rises and will be shot in Nolan's preferred choice of high-definition IMAX cameras rather than 3D.

Explaining his decision, Nolan said that the introduction of 3D could disrupt the visual continuity of his rebooted franchise, and argued that he wants to retain the vast sense of "scale" that was present in the previous films.

He told the Los Angeles Times: "We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films. There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to The Dark Knight and we want to make a film that will carry on with that look and feel.

"There's an intimacy at times [with the 3D effect] and we didn't want to lose scale... Our ambition for the third movie is to complete a story that has begun. This is not starting over, this is not rebooting. We're finishing something, and keeping a consistency with what's come before has real value."

Nolan went on to note that the high-definition cameras will potentially allow him to scale new heights of image quality on a cinematic scale, insisting that it will not be necessary to view the picture in IMAX to "see the benefits of the extraordinarily sharp, high-resolution".

He added: "We're looking to do something technologically that's never been done before. Our ambitions are to make a great movie."

The Dark Knight Rises is due to be released on July 20, 2012.

Robin Williams will appear as Dr Hugo Strange in The Dark Knight Rises, insiders have suggested.

The 59-year-old comedian, who came close to securing both the role of The Joker in Tim Burton's 1990 re-imagining and The Riddler in 1995's Batman Forever, is believed to be the subject of a tantalising tweet from Batman On Film which teases: "RW as Strange? Hmm..."

Batman News has noted that the poster correctly identified the presence of Bane in Christopher Nolan's superhero sequel prior to the confirmation of Tom Hardy's casting in the role. The website adds that another reliable source has frequently claimed that Strange will make an appearance.

Insiders have previously hinted that the Rises plot will be based on comic-book storyline 'Prey', in which Strange is portrayed as a psychotic psychologist tasked with helping Gotham police capture Batman.

Williams stated last summer that he would "do Batman in a second" should he be offered a part.

The Dark Knight Rises, which includes Anne Hathaway's Catwoman amongst its confirmed villains, is due for release on July 20, 2012.

Cotillard was rumoured for a role in The Dark Knight Rises last year. However, after the actress announced her pregnancy, it was believed that she would not be able to take a role in the highly-anticipated movie. The news remains unconfirmed as of yet.

The plot of The Dark Knight Rises has been revealed, according to sources.

Badass Digest recently posted details of the apparent storyline for Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated superhero movie, which were later backed up by fan site Batman-On-Film.

According to the report, the Warner Bros picture will focus on Batman's (Christian Bale) battle with the League of Shadows - a vigilante group headed by Talia al Ghul, with Bane (Tom Hardy) as her "muscle" and "possible love interest".

It is also claimed that rumoured cast member Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be portraying a villain connected with the shadowy organisation, while Anne Hathaway's Catwoman will ultimately fight against the League alongside Batman.

Regarding the rumours, Batman-On-Film subsequently posted on its Facebook page: "Some TDKR details have leaked. I know that they are true because I've known about it for a few weeks now."

The League of Shadows played a significant part in 2005's Batman Begins, where they were led by Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul, the father of Talia.

Josh Stewart has joined the cast of The Dark Knight Rises.

The Collector star has signed on to play a supporting role in Christopher Nolan's third Batman offering, Variety reports.

Stewart joins an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman. Last month, Matthew Modine and Tom Conti joined the roster.

The Dark Knight Rises will reportedly serve as the final chapter in Nolan's Batman trilogy. It sees Bale reprise his role as the Caped Crusader as the character takes on Hardy's Bane and - as has been strongly speculated - The League of Shadows.

The film's shooting schedule will take the production on location to India, Romania, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. A casting call for "Victims and Perpetrators" was recently issued in the latter city.

A new teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises has been released online.

The latest image, revealed on the superhero sequel's official website tonight (December 10), sees the villainous Bane (Tom Hardy) walk away from a smashed Batman mask, seemingly foreshadowing a bleak fate for the Caped Crusader (Christian Bale).

The tagline "the legend ends" and cracks that appear behind the Batman logo on the bottom of the poster reinforce the message alluded to in the image.

It was announced yesterday (December 10) that special IMAX screenings of the Dark Knight Rises prologue will be held at various locations in the US on December 13 and UK cinemas the following day.

The prologue will also be attached to IMAX copies of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which will open in the US on December 21 and the the UK on Boxing Day.

Director Christopher Nolan recently claimed that the opening to The Dark Knight Rises "takes your breath away".

Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also star in The Dark Knight Rises, opening in cinemas on June 20, 2012.

At least 14 people have been killed in a shooting at a Batman film premiere in the US city of Denver, police say.

About 50 people have been injured in the incident at the cinema complex in the suburb of Aurora.

Witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle and handgun. He told police that explosives were stored at his home.

Police chief Dan Oates told reporters that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated as a consequence of that information.

More weapons may have been left in the cinema, he said.
