My thread on my laptop seems to have disappeared  This is a continuation of that thread.

Basically, motherboard fried, got a HDD docking station and put my old hard drive in. I've recovered all my data (thanks Alan :)).

My question is, in order to free up space on the hard drive and simply use it as an external hard drive for backing up, is it ok to delete these files?

I've copied all the data from my user account onto the partition drive so I won't lose any data from there. I'm not bothered about the program files but if I delete any of the other stuff will anything stop working on the disc?

I would say yes. If you now have a working computer then you dont need these files HOWEVER if you have a large hd on your new computer then why not make a folder on it for these files and move them there and then format the external hard drive.

I'm still waiting for my laptop to be delivered, using an old XP at the moment with a relatively small disc (80gb)

My new laptop has a 250gb hd so I could put all the data on there and reformat. I think that actually would be the best way to go about it.

Thanks Alan, you're a fountain of knowledge.

I got my new laptop, transferred my files from external HDD then formatted it. It all works fine and was surprisingly quick. I thought it would take 5-10 mins but it was formatted in a few seconds.
