ITV is to broadcast the National Movie Awards live in late May.

The event, which will take place at London's Royal Festival Hall, will give British cinemagoers the chance to vote for their favourite movies through a nationwide poll. Voting opens today on nationalmovieawards.com.

"The National Movie Awards celebrate the very best of what the film industry has offered from the past year and for the first time ever our viewers will have a front row seat for all the action as it happens live on ITV1," said ITV's director of entertainment and comedy Elaine Bedell.

The National Movie Awards took place in 2007 and 2008 but was not held last year after ITV declined to commission it for TV broadcast.
