Lewis Hamilton has apologised after his Mercedes road car was impounded by Melbourne police on Thursday evening.

The 25-year-old, who set the fastest time in Friday's Australian Grand Prix practice, is expected to be charged with improper use of a vehicle.

McLaren's 2008 Formula 1 world champion admitted: "I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police.

"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

The news broke hours after Hamilton recorded the quickest time in Friday's second practice session.

His time of one minute, 26.801 seconds, was 0.25 seconds quicker than McLaren team-mate and current world champion Jenson Button.

Police constable Scott Woodford said Hamilton's rear wheels were skidding as he accelerated out of Albert Park, where Sunday's race is being staged.

"Given that Melbourne's on the world stage with a lot of interstate and international visitors, we would expect drivers to observe road rules," he said.

A Victoria police spokesman added: "The vehicle was seen to deliberately lose traction and was intercepted by police.

"The driver, a 25-year-old man who resides in Switzerland, was spoken to at the scene and is expected to be charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle.

"The vehicle, a 2010 Mercedes, was impounded for 48 hours and the driver returned to his hotel."

It is not the first time Hamilton's driving has put him in trouble with the police.

In 2007, his car was impounded in France after he was caught speeding.

FFS How pathetic is that. Obviously the peeler concerned had nothing better to do and has never heard of DISCRETION

Bet when he stopped him the peeler said '' Who do you think you are then, Lewis Hamilton''

he should be punished for what he did... just cause he is an F1 driver doesn't mean he can behave like that off track..

Bet if it had been Schumacer you wouldnt have said that:heart::p

What he did was hardly crime of the century. Its something we all have done. It cannot be easy getting into your own car after driving flat out at 220mph a few minutes earlier. A simple caution would have sufficed

Siobhan

yeah I would say the same.. maybe even more cause Schumacher has kids and should set an example...

Even Hamilton admits he did wrong

Lewis Hamilton is a professional and highly trained driver. He was doubtless in control of the car at all times. Okay waht he did wasnt a very good example to young drivers but a caution would have sufficed. Just to prove its possible to control a car at 170 in a city street have a look at this

He will be fined big time for this offence and rightly so. He is supposed to be a role model for young drivers and look how he behaves. Though i suppose it's his only chance as on the track he's not a hope in hell.

That is a controlled enviornment.. not a regular street.. it is blocked off and no chance of another driver coming along

I know what you are saying. Lewis Hamilton is a professional highly trained driver. Unlike some of the boy racers who regularly do this in our towns and villages he was in control and that is the big difference. Granted he shouldnt have done it on a public road but hey it wasnt the crime of the century, he didnt hit anybody, crash or was drunk.. I feel that the police were overreacting. I have passed my advanced driving test and am quite capable of doing things like this while still maintaing control but wouldnt do them on a public road (well not in front of a police car anyway).

Opinion is divided

The roads minister of Victoria in Australia has used strong language to criticise Lewis Hamilton after his road car was impounded by Melbourne police.
Minister Tim Pallas made the comment on the day that Victoria launched a new road safety campaign.
The Formula 1 racing driver, who was arrested on Friday, is expected to be charged with improper use of a vehicle.
Mr Hamilton, who was in the country for the Australian Grand Prix, has apologised for his "over-exuberance".
'Nanny state'
Mr Pallas criticised the 25-year-old British racing driver on the day that Victoria launched a Don't Be a ******** road safety campaign.
Asked whether Lewis Hamilton met that description, he said: "OK, I'll say it. He's a ********."
But Australian driver Mark Webber has defended his fellow competitor, saying his homeland had become a nanny state, with ridiculous parking and speeding rules.

As Hamilton drove away from the circuit to his team's hotel, police constable Scott Woodford said his rear wheels were skidding as he accelerated.
"Given that Melbourne's on the world stage with a lot of interstate and international visitors, we would expect drivers to observe road rules," he said.
A Victoria police spokesman said the Mercedes was seen to "deliberately lose traction".

'Wild side'
It is not the first time Hamilton's driving has put him in trouble with the police. In 2007, his car was impounded in France after he was caught speeding.
Earlier this month, Hamilton insisted there would be no "wild side" to his character emerging following his decision that his father Anthony should no longer manage his career.
"I don't think so," Hamilton remarked at the time. "I am who I am. I don't think anybody has stopped me from being who I wanted to be.
"When I arrived in the sport, I didn't go out and buy a million different cars, I took my time.
"Maybe I might buy one car this year, who knows. But that's not being wild.
"I've still got the same girl, I race for the same team and I've still the same dedication and determination."

Stirling Moss also put it down to youthfulness and high spirits. Some of us older folks remember that when he recieved his knighthood Stirling Moss pulled off a similar stunt while leaving Buckingham Palace. Pulled over by the police thhe Constable stuck his head into the car and said ''Who do you think you are Stirling Moss'' '' SIR Stirling Moss actually '' came the reply

Alan.. because it was a public road and I will agree that yes, Hamiliton is a professional driver but other road users are not.. maybe it didn't cause an accident this time but you know yourself, no matter how skilled or competent you are, other road users are not!
Ok, maybe it shouldn't have been impounded and he should have gotten a caution but it wasn't his first time... other F1 drivers have behave outside the race course.. why should he get an exception?

At least we both agree on something. A caution would have sufficed on this occasion :)

yeah probably our only agreement on this.. As a role model and especially as a racing driver, he should set a better example... for argument sake, if this was an ordinary joe soap, would a caution also be ok for him?

No because the ordinary Joe Soap would not know what to do if his showing off went wrong. However that said what happened was not the most serious motoring transgression. A professional driver does his showing off in a controlled manner and is aware of his limitations.

I was taught to drive within my limitations and the limitations of my car bearing in mind traffic conditions and other road users.

Lewis surely deseves to be punished for not spotting the police car

At least Lewis put his hands up and admitted he was wrong unlike some of our other so-called celebs who use their riches to buy some smartass lawyer to get them off on a technicalty.

Funny thats not how I read it. Lewis started off at the back of the grid and had overtaken 8 cars on the first lap and finished a very credible sixth

He had a good run at the start.. yes he over took 8 cars, 6 of them newbies and then there was many who retired... Massa did just as well to come from 21st to 7th... was he mentioned as been a fantastic driver on the good old BBC?? I think not!

I am in no doubt about Hamilton's skill, I just don't like him as a person (ever since he lied last year) and sick of hearing "Hamilton, hamilton, hamilton" when watching a Grand prix..
The new points system is really shaking things up and that is going to make it entertaining...

May be we could all go busking in our local towns, then put all the money together.

"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? "

Well it was a gorgeous day up here in Scotland. And I did think about borrowing my nephews dogs to hold the hat while I did some singing in Princes Street. But with all this Volcanic dust flying around I didn't want to damage my vocal cords so I gave it a miss.
